  1. Same old story...fans are mad at a player that the team overpaid for. In the case of Sammy, the team overpaid with draft capital. Then the player doesn't produce to a level congruent with the assets given up for him, and the fans hate on him for it. Blame Whaley for what he gave up, not Sammy. With the diva rumors...do any of us really know the truth in any of this??? Maybe there's some truth there, but I think it's overblown.

With Sammy, he was always awesome when he was on the field, just hurt a lot. My read is that the team didn't want to invest #1 receiver money into a player who was always injured. They traded him while he still had value at the end of his rookie deal. If he comes back to the Bills on a budget-friendly free agent deal, what's not to like? We have enough guys at the position that we don't need to count on his health, and every time he goes out there he's going to make plays.

Hopefully he still has some gas left in the tank, because this was a surprisingly high contract (more than a $6 million cap hit).

I figured they were going to eventually land John Brown's replacement for about half that cost, once the market started drying up.

This signing seems to be more about the Bills really wanting Emmanuel Sanders, rather than landing a bargain deal.

Sanders did always catch my eye back when he was playing for the Steelers, and later the Broncos.  But since he got traded to the 49ers and then signed with the Saints, I haven't noticed him making much impact.

Seems you're right - the plan all along was to get ES and cut Brown. I won't pretend to be a football scouting expert, so I would just say he must do something particularly well (that Brown didn't do) that Daboll wants to integrate into the offense.

I was also surprised to see the move considering our cap limitations, so they must really value him.

  3. Last season Singletary was a bright surprise who exceeded expectations as a 3rd round rookie. This year he regressed. Maybe it had something to do with losing Gore as his mentor? Perhaps switching to a pass first offense where he was barely used was also a problem?

My thoughts (not that it counts) - they're not gonna hang their hat on Singletary, but he's likely got a spot on the team next season.

His whole career has been this same type of play. Grab every play and only get called on it 1/3 of the time. Mouth runs the whole time.

I would guess this is probably the truth. He plays very physical and on the boundary of pass interference on every play. If the ball doesn’t get thrown in his direction, he probably doesn’t get called. It’s not a totally bad strategy.

    I hope so!

Fitz would have been a great mentor for Josh Allen.

I don't think they had a choice then.

Yes, I'm sure he would have been, he seems to have no problem in that role.

Regarding the Peterman thing, I agree with you. And it seems from all accounts that Peterman was a practice hero and smart guy who simply lost his nerves once the game rolled. If that's true, then I can't blame McDermott. He gave Peterman a shot and he failed....then they moved on.

He's also close to having played for all 32 teams. What a coincidence!

Fitz has had a remarkable career as far as I’m concerned, and it basically started in Buffalo. Every time you think his career is finished, he reappears and tosses 400 yards in a game (maybe with 4 picks, but still). I’m glad we have a new option in Buffalo, but he has definitely helped out a lot of sad teams in the last decade.  I love that guy.

  8. None of this garbage matters, because we have JA. Who knows if Mahomes would have been as good here anyway. And it's still too early to tell if either player will be better than the other when it's all said and done.

Is Mahomes better right now? yes. If someone asks me if I'd rather have Mahomes? No, I like our guy.

I've been breaking down our remaining schedules, and the AFC East definitely has the potential to come down to our Week 17 matchup.

If the Dolphins beat the Broncos (who are likely to start Brett Rypien) this Sunday, they will be tied with the Bills with a 7-3 record.

They finish up the third quarter of the season against the Jets and Bengals.  It's hard to imagine them losing either of those.

Meanwhile, we get the Chargers and banged-up 49ers, which should both be wins for us.

That leaves both Miami and Buffalo likely sitting at 9-3 heading into the home-stretch.

Week 14 is rough for both teams.  We get the Steelers.  They get the Chiefs.

They get the Patriots in Week 15.  We get the Patriots in Week 16.

We both have one more AFC West game.  They still need to play the Raiders.  We still need to play the Broncos.

Of course, there is always the possibility that Miami hits a slump (they are starting a rookie QB after all) and drops a game they shouldn't.  If that happens, I think we clinch the AFC East before Week 17.  But based on the way the season has played out so far, I certainly wouldn't count on that happening.  The good news is that we currently hold the edge in tiebreakers.  We already beat Miami once head-to-head, and we are 4-0 in the division.  But we also cannot afford a slip-up.

    all good points.

People are looking for guarantees. At this point there are none. Buffalo just needs to continue making strides to become a better football team.

Good competition helps the process in my humble opinion.

definitely, gotta play against the best to be the best.

  10. With the fins current winning streak, I won't dispute that they're a dangerous team or that they're on the rise. That said, I would be surprised if they threatened us for the AFC East.

We've all seen this before, a talented rookie QB comes in and shocks the NFL, going on a hot-streak. However, experience has taught me that after a number of a games, NFL coaches will find weaknesses in his game and challenge him (usually leading to a slump until he can overcome said weaknesses). Although nothing is ever certain, I expect that we will see this soon with Tagovailoa. Even if he's a future hall-of-famer, he will hit his bumps in the road.

Our young QB is a step ahead in this development process, and even if JA isn't "Tom Brady consistent," he's on his way. I expect that by the time we hit week 17, coaches will have the fins figured out a lot more and we will have the upper hand. Not to mention it's a tough road for them to overtake our now 4-0 division record. It would be a nice statement from this Bills team to close out the division 6-0 and say who's boss.

  11. For all the talk of our inadequate D-Line, I haven't seen anyone mention the opt-out of Star Lotuleilei. Fans always seemed to criticize him, but perhaps he really did a lot more than most thought.....I'm sure that unexpected loss created some problems up front.

We know with Beane that he'll go out and get someone if he sees someone who will improve the team.

  12. I'm sure there are explanations, but it always seems that it's a struggle for every NFL team to have both a top offense and defense in the same season. In our case it doesn't seem logical, since the Defense is mostly intact from last season, including all key players, plus the same system, etc.... I thought perhaps it was a product of playing soft to protect the lead in the previous games, but that wouldn't make sense in yesterday's game.

Anyhow it has been super fun to watch our Bills so far this season, and I'm sure the combination of 4 games on film, plus Vrabel's extra week to prepare helped them to shut down our offense.

Looking forward to a match against another juggernaut next week! Let's go Bills

  13. This stuff happens to players on every team. Will take it as a blessing that he was caught, didn't hurt himself or others, and will hopefully not make such a mistake again.

These mistakes can happen to anyone rich or poor - it's about impaired judgement when drunk, and not being around the correct people to take the keys away.

I agree with you that he was troubled. I too hope things get better for him. He suffered terrible losses as well.

But I feel that you could see this on the field at Alabama. Just went through the motions at times. Physical abilities were not the problem.

I know this is just a game we're talking about. He had more important things going on.

But respectfully, I don't think his career was solid for the #3 overall pick. You need a superstar at that pick. I appreciate your comments by the way. Our opinions aren't that far apart, I feel.

Thanks for that. I agree also, the result did not live up to #3.

At the time, I hated the Dareus pick. I wanted Watt there (even at 3), or a trade down for Cameron Jordan. My 2 favorite D-line prospects in that draft. I saw Dareus as a 2 down DT. You don't spend the 3rd overall pick on a 2 down player in my opinion.

Dareus was a day one starter and incredible talent who played at a high level even as "lazy" as he was. He dealt with a massive train of tragedies in a short period of time and he just couldn't cope with it. Whaley and the Bills staff at the time knew what he was dealing with and they were doing their best to help him and encourage him. It was a solid draft choice that didn't go as planned for anyone. I give my best wishes to Marcel, that he can recover and lead a good life whether he plays football again or not.

I think kicker is a different animal, but once you get into rounds 5-7 I would rather have the best kicker or punter as opposed to the 45th best guard.

I think you are right, that you go BPA within tiers and whatnot, but if the value is that much greater at another position, you draft that guy. The value has to be close to the same, otherwise you are drafting for need.

actually would be pretty cool if we drafted the best kicker this year in the later rounds.

If I had to list positions that I'm certain would not be our second round pick, they would be in order:

    1. QB
    2. FB
    3. WR
    4. TE

If there was a FB in the draft with a 2nd round grade, we absolutely MUST draft that guy. If there was a FB THAT good, we need him smashing heads in Buffalo. LOL!!!

Less thinking out loud, more research to know what you're talking about please.

Knox is going to be our stud in an already deep TE group.  We need other positions more.

I like Knox too, optimistic about his future. And I agree with you that the Bills should and will take the best player available on their board. That said, if there was a top tier TE prospect there when the Bills have their pick....wouldn't it be great that have that big fast reliable guy for Josh Allen to throw to? I think every quarterback wants that.

I think Moss needs to become and H back type and do some fullback things. But I like his upside.

Love Keene, and like above I do think he can double as a fullback/tight end. I know its early, but I think he is going on day 2.

To me, if he’s there in the second you take him. I’d rather have the best tight end in the draft over the 7th running back or tenth defensive end. There is some boom or bust there as he just turned 21. So he will probably need some time. Love Kmet though. And he has the length and height that make him the perfect complement to Knox. Kmet is Gronk to Knox’s Hernandez (minus the murdering). Or more conservatively, Kmet is Typer Higbee and Knox is Gerald Everett.

A lot of people around here seem to think Kmet is a serious prospect. If he's that good, I wouldn't doubt if the Bills would consider him if he's there.

If you read what I wrote carefully, my advocacy for Draft picks was for RB / CB / Edge but that if Beane believes a TE is worth any pick at any point, IMHO, he and his team have done enough to warrant my trust, despite my personal doubts or objections. Having said that, TE is arguably one of the *current* weakest positions largely due to the unknown in Knox / Sweeney and that the Bills have a marvelous job of building depth in nearly every other position group. The other group that is screaming for quality depth? Running Back...Corner could be an issue if Norman doesn't rise to the occasion and Edge merely because of age, hence why I said those three before TE and the fact that Knox / Sweeney do seem promising, but when you an opportunity to elevate the play of a position group by Drafting well - you take it.

I'm with you on that, both show potential to be good players, but an elite talent is something different.

We had our chance with Hooper, but we didn’t pull the trigger.  The Syracuse article about the Baylor WR was interesting and maybe a better option now given the FA TE market is pretty much dead and the draft is light on TE’s.

I see. What a pity. I was just thinking TE is often great value in the 1st/2nd round. Gronk was a late first if I recall and Martellus Bennett was a 2nd (also as I recall). Seems usually GMs don't take a TE in the high rounds unless they really have a stable roster already.

  21. 2 hours ago, BritBill said:

I agree but is there a stud TE in this draft? Even more so a stud still there when we pick?

I haven't investigated to be honest. I would think there must be a couple of guys out there, but I could be wrong!

  22. I was just thinking, when is the last time we had a stud TE? We know what difference that makes in an offense, yet we've always had too many other pressing needs. After FA, we don't really have "holes." If we can get an awesome TE in the draft, it would be the icing on the cake. ;)
