Of course there's an argument that he could be BPA at 9. He's a generational athlete at a position of need whose comps are some of the best WRs of the past few decades (if not ever) -- that is the argument.

While none of your points above are really wrong, they're also not necessarily the point, and I think that's the biggest thing that Metcalf deniers are missing. Not every WR needs to be a blur when it comes to short area quickness. Not every WR is going to win with precise routes. A guy built like Mecole Hardman is going to have a natural advantage in the agility game, just like a motorcycle is going to be more agile than a mack truck -- that doesn't mean that the motorcycle can't be more effective in certain things.  DK Metcalf wasn't ever going to be a jitterbug, but if you watch his film, look at his makeup (height/weight/bulk/strength/wingspan) and how he uses those to his advantage, he doesn't need to. As others have posted, we wouldn't be asking him to run the same routes as, say, Cole Beasley, and that's okay.

To your point about not being the best player on his team, that's also not really the point -- firstly, he was every bit as good as Brown when he was on the field, secondly he fits the type of player we need far better than Brown.

Everyone has their own opinions on the draft and its prospects, that's what makes it so much fun, but to say that DK Metcalf doesn't have star potential or that "there's just no argument that dk could be bpa at no. 9....none" is peak silliness. It may end being Oliver (size), Sweat (still developing as a pass-rusher), Taylor (can he transition to LT?), Hock (value of drafting TE at 9?), Burns (size), or (god help us...) Gary (unproven at his projected position) but each of these guys have as many question marks as DK Metcalf.

agree to disagree , but imo bpa at the biggest need trumps bpa at any position. i don't buy the coach speak crap. if we have a chance at q. willliams or oliver at no. 9. there's no way of justifying dk being bpa. tha'ts a steaming load.

is he considered the best wr in this draft?

  2. I hope I'm not giving anything away here, but he was the Va. player of the year on Dline coming out of high school and started his college career there. It was due to oline injuries that his coach forced or talked him into changing. Who knows how high he could have gone had he stayed on defense. 6'5' 315?....

I say give it a thought. I think he could be a terror inside or out,  (leaning toward inside disruption)  but I bet there's talent there. We could have a JJ. Watt type player and not even know it.  No , I'm not drunk....that much, but we still have 6 days....

it sounds kind stupid to argue 11-5, but i think dabol will have a plan to neuter greggo in game one. it's not gonna be like years past where we think with fitz we're gonna go spank em,  but i think dabol is smarter than that and will unleash some offensive stuff on them that they can't match.

nothing will make me happier. i like fishlips if he's our dc, but hate that he's in our division.  we need to be prepared and make a statement right off the bat.

let our monster oline guys do some mauling. shady and gore with quick scores with brown and foster.

    Zero chance huh?

That's a pretty obtuse and ignorant statement.

Foster, while promising, hasn't proven himself.

He has just as much garbage games as good ones.

Beasley is a b+ slot guy, great pickup, but not a OMG BEST WR EVER

Brown has been inconsistent at best in his career.

    Zay Jones is wildly inconsistent.

    Nobody can cover our guys?

This is one of the most honer-filled posts I've seen here in a long time.

    Put down the koolaid bro.

so he's a physical freak. however scouting reports that exclaim his 40 time, also point out it's straight line speed. i've not heard anyone gush over his route tree or route running.  he wasn't even the best receiver on his team.

i'm not putting him down, but at no.9 you need a star at a position of need.  the hole kyle left leaves us wide open to have our defense  be the side of the ball to drag us down record wise.  there's no way in hell that drafting dk is gonna cover that up.

i would rather they get a couple of difference makers on the dline. if we ignore that hole on d, we could end up going 8-8 with a top ten offense.  omg, flashback!...25 years worth!

i will absolutely trust their decisions, but there's just no argument that dk could be bpa at no. 9....none

  5. i think dt and pass rusher are the 2 most important needs. i know we can't draft one of each high. i'm not sure how they do it, but if they go edge high, i can see them being able to get a quality 3 tech later. for example daniel wise. bio on nfl.com.

i mean he can be one of a couple dts that they could get (drafting more than one), that turn out to be really good without using a higher round pick.  comes from a family of current and past nfl players and you just can't put a value on that.

that being said, i think a dt can be found later versus an effective pass rusher, which way do they go? who knows...

Personally, I wouldn't like them to go any further up than 5th overall.  Your thoughts?

i would for sure go to 5 for q. wiliams.

    3 minutes ago, OldTimer1960 said:

Not thinking a trade up from 9 is wise.  There will be good options available at 9.

if we can move a player (shaq) and a 2020 pick great. i wouldn't trade any picks this year before the 2nd 4th rd. pick.

  7. i posted before on this and hate to sound redundant but, what if?.....we sent shaq to atlanta then got grady jarrett with a swap from 9 to 14? atlanta needs bodies on the dline, but grady is gonna eat up tag money.

then we trade with carolina 14 to 16 for their 3rd.  we get montez sweat who slides to that spot. (due to weight and where he played college ball).

with our 1st 2nd rounder we pick dexter lawrence....an unblockable behemoth who just needs some coaching on hand use/ rush moves and boxing / karate lessons. the kid is gonna be the next suh...without the stupidity and headaches. he checks all the boxes for a pocket crushing dt. (simms's no. 2 tackle behind q. williams)

2nd pick in the 2nd round...irv snith jr.  pedigree..dabol...he's a bill. deep middle threat with reliable hands.

3rd rd. oshane ximines or zach allen.   a solid pair of bookends ( with sweat)for years to come.

3rd rd. 2nd pick.  mike mccoy center. good size, nasty disposition and probably an eric wood but better. cut bodine. if morse gets hurt or concussed we'll be screwed. that could happen in camp. we better have a plan for that.

after all that and in no certain order i would take...andy isabella ( a slot for beasley to teach)....kahlil hodge lb ub...this year's matt milano steal and finally bryce love....we got the time for him to learn from shady and gore to become our next thurman thomas.

i think after the draft, if they want to worry about oline some more, i believe these guys will find post june 1st cuts and ufdas that will be fine. like i've said before, the plan is for next year to be the year to get those 2/3 superstars to put us over the top.

    remember, rome wasn't built in a day....but then...i wasn't running that job...

Agreed and I think the distinction between Clark and Clowney has been duly noted by yourself and many posters.

I would prefer Clark as well, but Clowney is really trending upwards and he's 26 years young. Compensation is obviously a major factor. It APPEARS as though Seattle is under the gun a bit more to deal Clark than Houston is to deal Clowney. That works in our favor if Clark is the preferred player. Houston has to pay Watt next year, but with his injury history, I'm not so sure they wouldn't just wait til next season to make that decision. I feel like Houston is in "blow me away with an offer" mode.

i feel the same way. clowney was all that going into his draft, but it seems as though he's fetching watt's beers. i don't know his stats, but playing with watt you'd think he's be racking up sacks. anyhow, i'm not buying it. if we can't get clark, i'm all in on oliver and do whatever it takes to get bpa pass rusher some other way. the biggest need we have is pressure up the middle.  one thing we do know is that frazier's defensive probably will change as soon as his gray hair turns back to black. i'm hoping mc coach keeps the upper hand on the defense.

i trust these guys and can't wait to see how they wow me and i believe they will. i mean, who ever thought they'd do what they did in free agency? i trust the process and like i've said before, i do expect playoffs this year. however, i think next year is the year where they focus on getting a couple or a few  superstars to put us over the top.

it actually reminds me of how the team was built from 85-89.

Yep. And he compiled 43 sacks in 4 seasons. Not sure I get the point.

You got the QB on a rookie deal. THIS is when you strike.

i liked the mario signing and it was good til the coaching p'o'd him by dropping him into coverage then the divorce happened. my point though was,,,,

100 mil. and that was what? ...almost 10 years ago? i have no problem with paying clark that. clowney.....not so sure.

I like that even better. we cannot put them all to good use !

i would send lawson and a 4th this year combined with a conditional 3rd next year? (spitballin here). but then getting oliver? change of pants will be needed...

    2 minutes ago, LSHMEAB said:

Technically, it's a multi-billion dollar enterprise paying them, but the answer is yes. You want impact players? You pay them. Pretty simple.

didn't we give mario a 100 mil. contract?

I can see it happening as well. We have too many picks and not enough roster spots.

Sneaky suspicion the guy they're targeting is Jerry Tillery.

well if they trade down a few spots and do get tillery.....he was like ? no. 4 on chris simms's top 7 dt?  6'6" will be pushing 290 with an attitude....i'm thinking he and harry know each other. then get zach allen or trade back into the 1st and grab a sliding clelin ferrell?  idk, my head is constantly dreaming crap up....next tuesday can't get here soon enough.

to all you rochester fans...where should i go to make sure i can be around fans and not have the old lady poo-poo the night up? btw. i'm a westsider.

Depends on Trent Murphy (or how the Bills brass view Murphy).

Lawson might prove to be a better option than Murphy, with a lower dollar investment?

i think this is the year that we need to get a quality dt and edge to groom for dropping star$ and trent$ in the next year or so.

replacing lorax ain't gonna be easy, but having him here in the locker room this year is like having an extra coach.  i'm still not giving up on trent and really think he can have a come back year.

I also hate how sacks are counted. If hypothetically a guy had 8 half sacks that’s 8 good plays, but it shows up as 4 sacks. It should be separate numbers for example 5 sacks and 3 half sacks

Also, what about having him gain 10 lbs and putting him inside? Heard Sal Capaccio say today on WGR that Ed Oliver’s playing weight will be around 270-275 so why not try Shaq there?

he was on onebillslive and said he is much stronger than last year. i wouldn't be surprised in him being a draft day trade.....especially since there seems to be no talk of talks.

however,  i think they would/ should consider kicking him inside. if they did that and rotated murphy , the new guy and love at end along with having lorax to get after it, we could be ok as is,  if we really get shut out and put in the position of having to overdraft at 9.

that's one option that would allow them to go after tj or taylor if bpa.

they could also use him in a trade up, trade down or trade for picks.  ( trade him to seattle along with a 2020 2nd for clark?)

if i'm paying him , he's gotta play inside....which would allow for an edge with the 1st pick. i actually think he would benefit from the move.

instead of having more ground to cover at end and being ridden around the arc,  i think straight ahead he could be a constant disruption and pocket collapsing type player.

i think they have all options ready for any way things may fall.  i believe they will do something no one saw coming.

First, I disagree that our defense was "not very good last year."  They weren't dominant, but they were overall a very good unit that got worn down and had to compensate for a historically bad offense for most of the year.

I'm actually OK with Beane using our first round pick on whoever he thinks is the best DL available there.  What I'm not OK with is burning our first two picks (plus probably another premium pick this year or next) on defense when we are completely devoid of offensive playmakers.   Go ahead and pick a DL at 9, but I want to see the next two picks used on WR, TE and/or RB.

i'm just not getting the "devoid of offensive play makers" stuff.  mcoy and gore are gonna give us a top 5 rushing attack.(whilst training a youngster or two.

brown/ beasley/ jones/duke and foster.  not to mention the oline additions.   we have a 2nd yr. qb, not tom brady.   i don't know how long you've been a fan but...

for years after years the bills have picked up one side of the team and the other screwed our season. i for one believe these guys are a bit smarter than that. we need to solidify the dline and get some pressure.

they need to stagger contracts. i expect playoffs this year but realistically believe next year will be the year where we go all in on a couple of superstars. trust the process foo!

  15. if they don't get oliver, obviously i'll be bummed.....but i've said this before,,,,one thing i do know is that they will do something i never saw coming, or could never have dreamed up.

looking at past picks, these guys find players who have a humble past and the drive to be great. they do unbelievable  research. the players they uncover always fit the mold.

    no, give me ed oliver

sorry, i'll read through the pages later.... but felt little need to go farther than this. reason being....

they needed oline help badly.  they put together a huge fa group so they aren't reliant on spending a high draft pick there.

they needed wr help badly.  they again, put together a good group.....see above

they need to replace kyle, improve the pass rush, sack total and improve the run defense . they set themselves up nicely to go bpa at the bpn (biggest possible need, dt.)

PLEASE GET ED OLIVER!  we can move around the draft after that to get some de help.

it's not hard to see the direction they are going and that they do have a plan. hopefully for once since 1985, we have a f.o. that will not suck on one side of the ball while concentrating on the other.....which has been the (for lack of a better word), billsy thing to do for way too long.

The best DT and Edge rusher with first two picks. Oliver/Gary, Burns? What if Devon White is there at 9? I doubt it, but do you find a way to get him involved?

if there's no oliver or sweat at 9 yet devin white is, i bet there will be plenty of trade opportunities.

I would not mind seeing Lawrence  and star in front of Edmunds, if Lawrence is as athletic as simms is describing.

i like lance zuerliens(sp?) write up in the profile on nfl. com.  rated as a rd.1 instant starter....comparison is shaun rogers (i'm fine with that fo sho).

draftwire says he has only scratched the surface of what he can become. as far as the knock on his pass rush, i agree with simms that hand usage and rush moves can be

easily coached. he can collapse the pocket with ease. just get him some technique coaching and i think he'll be great. he cannot be blocked 1 on 1.

i still would prefer oliver no doubt, but the way some of these mocks are going, not only the top guys, but also sweat and oliver gone by 9 would suck, but could end up being the reality.

  19. i don't see giving away 2,3,and 4th rd. picks to move up. it's gonna cost way too much.  that being said, if we are stuck at 9 and the top guys along with oliver and sweat are gone,  i wouldn't be surprised to see dexter lawrence be the pick.  chris simm's take on him as the no. 2 dt got my attention. my biggest take away before was considering who he was playing with and him being a junior, but i'd be fine with that pick.

  20. if i had to guess.....and maybe this deserves it's own thread, if i had to guess  players that we draft,  i would have to go with irv smith and risner.

i would have said oliver, but not sure if they can get him.( he could get snagged higher).

if i had to have a wish list....

    oliver  future anchor

    risner  future rt

    irv smith  deep middle reliability

mike mc coy  future center if morse gets hurt

iabella groomed by beasley....which is why they signed him

kahlil hodge home grown...possible steal of the draft

bryce love ....give him a year to heal and we have another young shady

    and hopefully land frank clark!
