Yes. I don’t even care if we get a 7th back. Just get his cap hit off this team.

I'll be very interested to see how the Chiefs look against the Bengals this weekend. We were very clearly exposed by Cincy, but I'm not so sure they won't do the same to Kansas City. The Bills and Chiefs both have flawed rosters outside QB. The Bengals (outside OL injuries) are in the mold of San Fran and Philly. The Chiefs have a better shot because they don't have a rookie OC and Spags is 10x more suited to coach up modern day Defense than the stale/played out Leslie Fraizer Defense.. but they have far more weaknesses than this current Bengals squad. Cincy is a perfect storm of hitting on picks, hitting on FA, still having a rookie QB contract AND the blessing in disguise of the Burrow injury year to get that elite WR they otherwise wouldn't have, which is really what makes their Offense so absurd with already having Higgins and Boyd. Bills really screwed up their chance to compete this year by making poor roster construction decisions in last years off-season and whiffing on the Epenesa, Basham and Oliver picks over the course of a few years.

Would love that. Bring back someone like Marlowe for a vet min and have Hyde/Benford as your starting Safeties. Can bring back Dane Jackson and have him as the 3rd outside corner backing up (hopefully) White & Elam. Taron Johnson in the slot, with Siran Neal as depth. The Secondary and DT are places we could save money this off-season and not need more than a couple Day 3 picks to stock up depth/rotation. Edmunds is the one guy who likely needs to have his replacement addressed given the absurdity of the Bernard pick last year. We, for some reason, have Milano's backup on the roster but not Edmunds.

I'm perfectly content rolling into next season with a DT room of Jones/Settle and then two JAG's/Rookies to rotate in. We get Von back, and the DL potential is just going to have to be contingent upon Von coming back healthy and the same guy we saw before he got hurt. I'm also perfectly content letting Edmunds walk. I don't hate the idea of re-signing him, but if he goes, our Defense simply starts to look like a lot of defenses... some talent/some deficiencies. McDermott, as a Defensive HC, should not need all this investment on Defense. It's utterly ridiculous and the only way we load up Allen for next season is by accepting a few downgrades on Defense. He still gets a Defense with the following: Von Miller Greg Rousseau Daquan Jones Matt Milano Tre White Taron Johnson Kaiir Elam Micah Hyde I mean, come on... figure it out.

Emphatic NO Emphatic NO Development?.. Undecided: The DL has been an abject disaster in terms of scouting/development. This staff is pretty good at elevating secondary play to this point. However, this year showed that may have been more due to Hyde/Poyer than anything else. That said, Hyde & Poyer weren't "Hyde and Poyer" until they came here. The fact we're even asking this question, when we were the only team in the Divisional Round with a Defensive HC is so unbelievably frustrating.
-
100% 7/8 Divisional Round teams have Offensive HC's. Only 1 without, the Bills. Allen with forever operate at a distinct philosophical disadvantage when compared to his peer QB's as long as McDermott is here. Can that be overcome? Sure. Hit on the OC's every few years and - most importantly - be able to elevate the Defense without needing the investment the other Offensive HC's may need. To this day, Spags runs circles around McDermott when it matters. He's constantly given a few playmakers and then scraps on that KC Defense, but they step up a lot when it matters, and when they don't, KC has a shot because Mahomes is given everything he could need in terms of coaching & investment. He's not worth that on this team. He's still a good player that provides pass rush from the interior. Teams not paying a QB 40M+ can afford to have a guy like him on their DL.. and I'd imagine more than a few would be interested if we make him available. I'd hope for a Day 2 pick in return, but would settle for a 4th or 5th to just get rid of that cap hit.

Difference Makers. Great point. Rams Defense last year had Ramsey, Von, Donald, Floyd and meh. They brought in a retired Safety to play for them in the Playoffs. Modern Defense is about making plays. Sacks, pressures, turnovers, TFL's.. You can't bend/don't break elite Offenses. We have an Offense built on above average talent everywhere, but lacking game-changers. Milano has become that, and guess what.. he's the only one that was noticeable in the Bengals game. This approach to roster construction, while not just being incredibly expensive, is also not conducive to the Playoffs. We suffocate mid Offenses all year, but mid Offenses don't typically make it to the Divisional Round of the Playoffs. Furthermore, because of how expensive it is to have above average talent, high draft picks everywhere on one side of the ball... the other side of the ball suffers... and suffer they did.

Awesome Post. The way Beane talked about Edmunds makes me think they'll keep him, but I agree with you 100%. The only caveat I'd give in regards to an Edmunds contract is that we can confidently backload that cap hit. The running joke of his age does play a part here. Very reasonable to believe that he, at least, plays to his current level throughout the entirety of his contract.. and then some. We have a Defensive HC. Given the deficit Allen operates from year to year without having a consistent Offensive voice in the room like Mahomes, Burrow, Lawrence etc., that HAS TO be made up by McDermott being able to field an above average defense with average collective talent.. and especially one that steps up in the Playoffs. To date... utter failure there. If not, why on earth are we accepting the clear downside a Defensive HC presents to the Offense year to year? Enough with the ST's. It's absurd. No more Taiwan Jones, Tyler Matakevich. Ed Oliver has to go. That 11M needs to be used on a WR or top tier IOL.

I'll be optimistic if they change Defensive Coordinators and invest heavy in Offense with a FA signing or two and early draft picks. Absent that, I'd be pretty frustrated. The Defense could be much better, even if we lose Poyer and Edmunds, as long as Von, Tre and Hyde all return to form next season. They're likely all on the team, and occupying quite a bit of cap space in doing so, so we're going to have to hope that happens.
-
We could afford him, but it would be idiotic to clear space in order to do so. He's not the same guy that dominated in Houston.. not even close.
-
I can't agree with giving Beane any type of pass at WR. Even if we can give him a pass for betting on Gabe as a high end WR2 in a pass-heavy Offense, almost EVERYONE was questioning why we only had 2 true outside WR's on the roster. The infamous Sal C quote of "look at them all as pass catchers"... fans/media, everyone was questioning the construction of the WR room heading into the season.

Bring in a new DC Let Poyer & Singletary walk Re-sign Edmunds (backload cap hit) Trade Ed Oliver Bring back Shaq, Marlowe, Klein and Dane Sign the best IOL available in Free Agency Sign a WR2 RD1 WR/OL RD2 WR/OL/S RD3 WR/OL/S RD3 (Oliver Trade) OL/WR/S/DT RD4 OL/WR/S/DT Day 3 Remainder: Any of RB, S, P, QB

He says we’re behind both of them right now .. but let’s see how Sunday plays out. I think we’re behind Cincinnati. My best prediction is that KC will feel that same way Sunday night. Cincy has the perfect storm right now. He’s right about the Burrow injury blessing in disguise. They have a rookie contract QB, elite weapons, top tier defense, elite coaching and Burrow can navigate the OL .. and may be getting some guys back. They are the team to beat in the AFC next year. After next year, it gets dicey for them, especially if their ownership can’t free up the money to pass out creative liquid money contracts like Pegula and some others can.

There's a Damar Hamlin conspiracy theory on Twitter right now
SCBills replied to JerseyBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
It's covid related for the right leaning twitter grifters, which is why posters are alluding to that. It's all relative.. there's quite a few conspiracy theories, many provably false, that left leaning folks have been falling for as well. -
Was Micah Hyde's injury the key to the Bills' season?
SCBills replied to Giuseppe Tognarelli's topic in The Stadium Wall
Defensive Head Coach, yet he apparently needs above average talent everywhere, plus depth, and still an injury or two leads to the annual patented destruction at the hands of a good Offense in the Playoffs. All at the detriment of our Offense that left the image of Allen, beat up, on the ground as he took hit after hit in a game we had no shot in. It wasn't about Hyde. It wasn't about Von. It wasn't about Daquan Jones. If McDermott can't field a good defense, that steps up with less talent than he has had, then next year can kindly be his last year here. -

SCBills replied to JerseyBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
Not going to entertain this conspiracy theory.. even though I do love a good conspiracy theory (and some, maybe with more frequency, are becoming true) HOWEVER … If they were trying to create a conspiracy theory.. they are doing everything possible to do so. -
Some of us just have a philosophical issue with a Defensive Head Coach. There are glaringly obvious reasons why. If McDermott, as a Defensive HC, can’t do more with less on Defense and can’t, under his leadership, put out a unit that can remotely slow down good offenses in the Playoffs, why is he here? We’re already at a disadvantage Offensively with continuity.

Don't need that, but am hoping for more creativity than "run it back and hope we nail the draft". Don't really care for Edmunds being re-signed but also don't hate it. Looking for McBeane to make some tough decisions on defensive personnel that are under contract with us and maybe shouldn't be next year.. Then using that money on Offense.

Michael Thomas or Odell Beckham Jr.?
SCBills replied to thenorthremembers's topic in The Stadium Wall
Josh Allen and Michael Thomas would be the football version of the Irresistible Force Paradox. Allen, who rarely throws slants, with slant boy as WR2. -
Yikes. Sounds like a fantastic off-season for a team that wants to continue finishing 3rd in the AFC.
-
If Tre is going to get back to pro-bowl caliber, it would happen next year. That's typically the timeline for an ACL with a Cornerback. That said, he says a lot of stuff that makes me wonder if his head is in it. I just don't know about him. No idea what to expect this off-season, because if the Bills truly want to help Josh Allen, they are going to have to make some pretty surprising moves with this Defensive roster.

Are the Bills committed to Ed Oliver in 2023?
SCBills replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall
Top Ten pick in year 4 against backups and a wildly mediocre starting Center and we're making excuses for him ... and advocating to pay him long term? These kind of moves, if made, are why we will be behind the Chiefs and Bengals. You can't pay guys on Defense who aren't reliable impact players when your QB is making 40M+
