Correction: Our offense is non existent without Allen

    Correct.

But how would it look with competent QB’ing?  Or, at the very least, a rookie to develop.

If the Chiefs, Bengals, Ravens, Texans, Dolphins etc lose their QB for a few games.. what does it look like?

I say a few games, because we’ve seen the Bengals/Ravens stay afloat without Burrow/Jackson, but they’re no longer a contender.

I think they all have enough around a competent backup to compete for a few games with a backup.

Do we?   Maybe if the running game is as we hope, the defense can find itself a top 10-12 unit and Kincaid/Shakir/Samuel elevate in their new roles.

I think our OL, by Week 1, could be up there with KC’s as the top two lines out of the contenders.

    But we don’t have a Kelce, Hill/Waddle, Henry/Andrews/Flowers, Higgins/Chase etc..

We have potential, specifically in Kincaid and a Brady offense that should be able to use the RB’s in various ways, but it’s all projection right now.

….and we don’t seem to have a competent backup QB.

After recent events, I have to confess my optimism has suffered a blow.

But I don't think we can look at the WR room without the bigger context.  Josh's passer rating and YPG in 2023 were his worst in the past four years while he threw the most picks of his career.   Something was off last season.  So let's play Clue and look at the usual suspects...

Offensive Line.  I wish Beane emphasized the OL more and think some sources like PFF overestimate how good the line was last year.  Nonetheless, it was clearly better than 2022 so the line wasn't the reason for the drop in performance.

Coordinator.  I'm going to give Brady a pass because he was thrown into the job midseason without the ability to change the scheme, playbook, or preseason preparation.   There's a lot to debate about Dorsey's coordinating.  Did he drill execution enough?  Use presnap movement enough?  Was he too predictable?  Did he rely too much on wideouts winning on their own instead of scheming guys open?

Quarterback.  Maybe Josh's drop in performance was Josh's fault.  It's not PC to mention here but, as great as he is, he's not infallible.  Kurt Warner, among others, says Josh will do better when he consistently gets the ball out on schedule.  And Josh said that his throwing mechanics last season were effected by nagging injuries.

Receivers.  Maybe Diggs and Davis were part of the problem.  Diggs and Davis both only managed 2.8 yards of separation on average last year - below the league average.  Davis's catch rate was only 55.6%.   We all know that Gabe had long periods of irrelevance and Diggs fell off in the second half of the season.  Some folks say Diggs lost a step.

What I'm saying is that there a lot of variables that will determine this year's wideout production.  I don't think this year's wideout group is as good as last year's but maybe the dropoff isn't as bad as we fear.  And maybe we'll enjoy improvements in some of the other variables.  Maybe the coordinating will be better this year.  Maybe Josh will fix is mechanics and throw better this year.  Maybe Joe  Brady will convince Josh to get the ball out on schedule, as Kurt recommends.  As fans, we can only hope.

I also have doubts and worries, too, but I'm not ready yet to say the sky is falling.

Theres a lot of posters who justifiably have concerns about our WR room, but I don’t think they are being fair when comparing what we have now to last year.

Im not saying Diggs is washed and I’m not saying Davis doesn’t have value.. but by the midway point of the season, for whatever reason, we had one of the worst WR rooms in the NFL.

Nobody was getting open for Josh, except Shakir.

People might say, well Diggs opened things up.. except he didn’t.   One of the biggest concerns last year was that teams were playing him straight up and he was still getting clamped.

So, who knows what we have this year at WR.  But what we had last year wasn’t working.

  3. We played right after the Chiefs

Worthy had two big plays.  One where he should’ve been called for an obvious false start and another off broken coverage.   But those plays happened, and we saw what he can be.

Keon, through two games, has two catches against off coverage.  He actually ran a fantastic route that should’ve been an easy pitch & catch TD and we all feel better about him.   Instead, Trubisky throws a wobbly hospital ball, that technically you want your WR to make the play on, but is in no way an easy catch and likely ends up with his day being over after the Safety obliterates him.

And here we are.. still wondering what we have after Shakir & Samuel.

I hope MVS is ok, because I at least know he can make plays.. not so sure about anyone else right now.   Piss poor backup QB play in games has definitely shaken my view of this room and I can’t tell if that’s fair or not.

  4. Hopefully the Bills are able to evaluate in practice because Trubisky and whatever we’ve had at 3rd string have made it impossible in games.

I think we’d all feel better about Keon if Mitch put that TD pass on him.  Instead, he threw a hospital ball, Keon would’ve had to lay out for it and get rocked.. he didn’t.. and all we have from him through  two games are two catches against off coverage.

I know, as fans on the board, tend to overhype preseason wonders. We see an undiscovered underdog and we jump to support them, even if the talent doesn't match up. But, in this case, I really don't see the harm in rostering the guy.

Milano will start the season on PUP or IR. Last year, the team rostered 6 LBs (Milano, Bernard, Dorian Williams, Dodson, Spector Manaketitch)

Dodson and Manny are gone. Right now our depth chart is Bernard, Williams, Spector, Nicolas Morrow (who Eagles fans are cheering the departure of) and then...
Edefuan Ulofoshio (5th round rookie, likely practice squad fit)? Shayne Simon? Deion Jones?

You're telling me that even if one spot is held for a guaranteed special teams players that Andreessen can't beat one of those guys for spot #6?

UPDATE: And he's a special teams player! When was the last time we saw Manakevitch come off the bench and tackle like that?

At this point I'll be shocked if he's not on the roster

I think fans also tend to do this for a guy who comes in with the 2’s or 3’s and makes plays against guy will be backups, practice squad or cut altogether.

Andreeson started the game and from the jump looked like the other white linebacker we have who just tore his bicep.  It was honestly insane to watch.. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a guy come from nowhere and play that well against an opponents 1’s and 2’s.

Bills will have to figure out if he can be that guy we saw and maybe he’s another Christian Benford, under the radar gem, or if he just caught a heater and played out of his mind.

I have hopes for the dude but don’t we see this every preseason? Some random rb (a bit different since he was a draft pick) doing well against 3rd teamers?  But still positive signs.

Never seen a guy 6th in yards from scrimmage in the entire nfl get as much crap as Cook does. It’s insane

Hes not really a random RB though.

He was a mid-round RB pick, a lot of it due to his age.

if you’re drafted between rounds 2-4 as a RB, that team likely expects you to contribute immediately.

  7. How about the rookie class so far..

Due to injury and lack of opportunity, not sure what we have in Keon or Bishop yet, but hard not to get excited about the roster building potential of guys like Carter, Davis, Solomon, Van Pran Granger, Harty, Grable, Andreeson and Gore.

Hopefully the run game we're seeing tonight is for real. It's going to have to be a major part of our offense this year.

This is the way this year.

Defense reliant on a lot of what-ifs.. mainly what-if Rousseau can stay healthy and make the jump and what-if Von can be 80% of pre-injury Von.

Those two going our way drastically change the outlook of the defense.

On offense, it’s going to be a run game and TE duo helping unlock the WR’s outside Shakir and Samuel.

If you’ve been paying attention, it isn’t this game. I’ve been concerned about the talent for a while. I’ve been a vocal skeptic of the Coleman pick because he doesn’t separate. The WRs are bad.

The OL has been better tonight and the defense has had some guys flash. We will see if that translates vs. a NFL offense with a real QB.

Ok.. and that’s a fair take to have.  Overall concern.   I’d disagree to your extent of concern, but I get where you’re coming from.

I was more taken back as to why you’re unloading in this thread when the defense looked good, our top O weapons aren’t really playing and our backup QB is a disaster.

I agree it is this year. Much more so than in past years. But it hasn't been all bad tonight there has been plenty of good.

The bad, not seeing much separation from receivers and Torrence really struggled.

What separation are we really expecting from Coleman and Hollins though?

I agree, not ideal.. but we knew who they are.

The Bills haven’t been loaded with high end talent. They have had an elite QB, some really good players (Diggs, Poyer, Hyde, Tre, Milano, Dawkins, Taron, and a few others) plus fantastic depth. Now they have lost the good players & the depth has been elevated leaving them thin.

Without Josh Allen this team would pick in the top 5. Sorry if that hurts but it’s reality. This is a bad roster .

    With Mitch starting, probably.

Chiefs, Bengals and Ravens likely have more high end offensive talent to help a backup than we do.

Not sure why this game has made you become so adamant about this posting this though..

Just seems Iike repressed anger over the roster that you’re letting out at a random time.

The OL has been fine and we’ve barely played our top 4 receiving options in Kincaid, Knox, Shakir and Samuel.
