  1. As I’ve said already, why not just have the league establish a compromise where the starters play the first quarter with limited full contact. The guys get much needed time against a foreign adversary and injuries are limited to the minimum possible. That’s what the Pro Bowl was for decades and there were very few injuries

Haha they were counted in my working out and my numbers. I had just forgotten to write them in. That's the problem with doing between meetings :D

    I have now edited.

Time to switch pubs (“meetings” to use your terminology)

Okay I'm going to have a stab.... pre-season games can change things but what we have learned from this regime it rarely does. They value training camp much more than making plays with vanilla scheming in pre-season games. Though it often is the forum in which people solidify perceptions - Van Demark last year who had a strong camp and then was excellent on pre-season being the example. Would they have been comfortable going with him as their primary LT backup without seeing him block in pads in pre-season? Possibly not. Essentially pre-season games tell us (the fans) what they are thinking and what their pecking order is but it changes less than you sometimes imagine in terms of production in those games affecting roster decisions.

So with all that said, here goes:

QB (2): Josh Allen, Mitch Trubisky

    FB (1): Reggie Gilliam

TE (3): Dalton Kincaid, Dawson Knox, Quintin Morris*

WR (6): Keon Coleman, Curtis Samuel, Khalil Shakir, Mack Hollins, Marquez Valdez-Scantling, Tyrell Shavers

OL (9): Dion Dawkins, Connor McGovern, David Edwards, O'Cyrus Torrence, Spencer Brown, Ryan Van Demark, Alec Anderson, Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, La'el Collins**

    Offense Total: 24

DT (4): Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones, Austin Johnson, DeWayne Carter

DE (6): Greg Rousseau, AJ Epenesa, Von Miller, Dawuane Smoot, Kingsley Jonathan, Javon Solomon***

LB (5): Matt Milano, Terrel Bernard, Dorian Williams, Baylon Spector, Edefuan Ulofoshio****

CB (6): Rasul Douglas, Christian Benford, Taron Johnson, Kaiir Elam, Ja'Marcus Ingram, Daequan Hardy*****

S (5): Taylor Rapp, Mike Edwards, Cole Bishop, Cam Lewis, Damar Hamlin******

    Defense Total: 26

ST (3): Tyler Bass (K), Sam Martin (P), Reid Ferguson (LS)

    Special Teams Total: 3

    Okay explanations:

    * - the third Tight End. I know Davidson has made some plays in camp and so in a sense he is the sexy choice here. And he might make it. But your third tight end has to play special teams, and big body blockers are even more of a priority for teams with the new rules. Morris is a really solid special teamer, is definitely the more reliable blocker as of now and has shown he can play when given opportunities too. This could flip though as I suspect the Bills feel like they could sneak whoever the loser of the competition is through to the PS and there is even a chance they keep four tight ends at the expense of a 6th receiver.

** - the ninth offensive lineman. I think this comes down to a straight fight between Will Clapp and La'el Collins. Why? Because the Bills depth options otherwise are Van Demark, Anderson, and VPG with zero career starts between them. I think they like all three of those guys a lot but will want at least one vet. I lean Collins because he can play tackle and guard (though is not the player he was) and they already have Anderson and VPG who can cover at center. I will say this, even if they keep 10 I don't think BOTH vets make it. If they keep a 10th it will be Tylan Grable and that will only be if they don't feel they can sneak him through to the PS.

*** - the defensive end rotation. I feel strongly that they will not want to lose either Kinglsey Jonathan or Javon Solomon. If they were sure about Von's status and readiness they'd just have him, Groot and AJE and then Jonathan and Solomon would rotate as the 4th guy. But the uncertainty about Von means they signed Smoot and he will have some value as an upgrade on the role Shaq Lawson has played here the past two years. Which means I think they have to allocate six roster spots to the position.

**** - the 5th linebacker. The Bills normally keep five. Milano, Bernard and Williams are locks. I think Spector's demonstration late last year that he can play on defense and his specialism on special teams makes him closer to a lock than most think. Which leaves one spot. Ulofoshio's rib issue bears watching and he might get the old Brandon Beane redshirt injury treatment, but if he doesn't I think he makes it and they rely on getting Nicholas Morrow or Deion Jones through to the PS as their vet there which is what they did last year with Christian Kirksey and then AJ Klein.

***** - the 6th cornerback. I think the five true corner slots are locked down. Elam has had some run with the ones in camp so I think the trade him during pre-season scenario that some speculated about is now off the table. Ingram has had by all reports a good camp has played a bit of nickel as well as being their clear 4th outside guy and is a classic developmental UDFA story that this staff has had plenty of. Daequan Hardy makes it as nominally a "sixth" corner but is really here because he looks like winning the returner job.

****** - the safety situation. If Bishop and Edwards had been healthy all camp and able to properly learn this defense the Bills would keep four safeties and Lewis v Hamlin would be a genuine roster spot battle. But with those two missing so much time and being behind the 8ball in terms of learning this defense I suspect both Lewis and Hamlin are in for now as vets that have played in and understand the scheme. I think in-season one of them probably shakes loose at some point. But to go into week 1 I think they will carry an extra body here.

There you go. I'll update after the pre-season games but for now this is my prediction.

The most interesting aspect of your projected roster is that this may be the first time in NFL history that a team won’t have a single Running Back. 😳

To assess fringe players are non starters is about all pre season is good for.

I’ve always thought the starters should play a quarter, and if the NFL was smart BOTH teams would do the same and treat that first quarter as a glorified scrimmage with only limited hitting.

I'm dealing with plantar fasciitis right now.  Very painful.

I had it a few years ago. Spent many an evening on the sofa rolling my arch over an iced water bottle. The cool part of the story was that after walking around Paris and London for a week (which I thought was gonna kill me) leading up to the Bills first visit to the UK and Wembley Stadium , I woke up that game day Sunday morning and the pain was completely gone. Go figure! It’s never come back.

I have a feeling that once training camp ends, Micah Hyde will be signing on for a farewell tour with the Bills.

    FS: Hyde, Hamlin

    SS: Rapp, Edwards
Third safety in three safety sets: Cole Bishop.

The only thing I can see changing this is if Bishop (or Hamlin) really start to come on and turn into playmakers at free safety and the need for Hyde is suddenly lessened.

I find it hard to believe that Bishop wouldn’t be anything less than second string at the outset and a starter by October.

Was by the stadium earlier.  Next level of the stadium is going up.  Along Southwestern by ECC South there are numerous flat bed trailers with pieces of precast concrete waiting to be installed. Would have taken some pics to post, but always a pain to have to downsize them in order to post.

Thanks for sharing. Any chance you can post a hand drawn sketch of what you saw? 😉

You can eliminate exactly the same labyrinth of deductions etc. while keeping the tax brackets (though obviously the brackets would shift and the rate at each bracket will be lower).  This is what they did with Gephardt-Bradlely in the 1980s.

I believe everyone knows that. No idea what stump you’re on here. No offense.

Not sure I understand your point since what you said is exactly what I thought  I was saying.

People conflate a flat tax with tax simplification but they aren't directly related.  Tax simplification is about getting rid of as many deductions and credits as possible, not making the tax rate flat.

Of course since higher earners tend to use more deductions and credits it would allow one to make the tax brackets less progressive to keep effective tax rates the same.

And flat tax simplifies the tax code….no?  Nobody is in favor of a flat tax that also retains the labyrinth of deductions etc. Nobody!

A flat tax has nothing to do with simplifying the tax code.  Plugging your income into a website and having it spit out a number presents no difficulties.  What tax simplification involves is getting rid of all the various deductions and credits that people are addicted to.

You're aware that it's all of those deductions and credits that make the tax code complex.....right? (Asking for a friend.)

1974 season opener.  Monday night football, Bills vs. Raiders.  Still the most exciting game I've even seen.

One of mine as well. If I recall it was only the second time the Bills had played on MNF and the Opener to boot. Not exactly sure why but the stadium atmosphere was nothing short of amazing that night. Great choice!

  12. As I’ve mentioned many times in the past, I was an Owner of a pretty significant sized corporation. At the end of our fiscal year we had very few options of what we could do with profits. One, we could pay taxes on them and retain any remaining funds to save for use, if needed, in the following year.  Two, we could reduce the corporate tax burden by distributing those profits to our owners and employees…who would then pay regular income tax on the amount they received. There is no option where taxes are not paid! Thinking that corporations are somehow getting away with something is utter nonsense.

I don’t offer this as some sort of political talking point. It’s just that most people don’t own a corporation so they have virtually no personal experience on this topic other than what they’re being told by talking heads who should (and most definitely do) know better.

I pay my share. And this kid will make more this year than I'll make working my entire lifetime.

    Let me be clear:

I fully support these players milking every dollar they can from the trillion dollar NFL which makes it money off fans

And then I fully expect these millionaires (and billionaire owners) to pay their fair share into the infrastructure and services that benefit us all

Oh stop. They are no different than you and I and everyone else They pay the taxes dictated by the tax code.

When playing on the road,  NFL players have to pay state tax in those states thaf have it .  So they don’t get a completely free lunch playing for a team in no tax state.

Is that true? Are you sure? I know it didn’t work that way when I traveled for business.

    Whatever floats your (house)boat

Most season ticket holders (especially those on this board) are Bills fans who like going to games, but for a lot of us we can't go to all of them.  We're not generally profit motivated, but typically by selling a few games a little above cost, we make up for other games we might need to sell below cost.

I’m not the slightest bit opposed to what you’re doing but it is NOTHING like selling your primary residence.
