The issue that needs to be fixed is why does it take til halftime to adjust and why can't you make these same adjustments after the 1st or 2nd drive of the 1st half?  Fix that and they go back to putting up crazy numbers.

That’s the most frustrating thing, and I’m sure what’s frustrating for Dorsey right now. We aren’t making sweeping adjustments we’re just executing better in the second half of games. By and large we’re running the same sets and calling the same plays from those sets the second half of these games.

Not a fan of Dorsey or the excuses he gets...but since the odds of him being replaced in season are so low, this is to focus on what he and the offense need to do to turn this thing around.  And with the injuries on Defense, we absolutely need the offense to be better.  This is ALSO assuming no trades, just working with what we have.

Well its not rocket science even though it seems hard for Dorsey to figure out who honestly just feels out of his depth right now from a coaching perspective.  So let me help him out...

    1. TURN JOSH ALLEN LOOSE! - This whole over correction after the Jets game is just as bad as the Jets game was.
      1. Josh did NOT need to run less...he needed to take less hits.
      2. Josh did NOT need to run less...we needed less called runs off the snap up the middle like a FB into the teeth of the defense.
      3. Josh did NOT need to run less...he needed to be smarter and not fight for extra meaningless yards once he made the play.
      4. The bottom line is that this was a MAJOR part of the NIGHTMARES that DC's had to defend against because he made you pay and pay bad when you didn't account for it.  Taking this out of his game has made Dorsey vanilla offense even easier to defend and its taken away Superman's cape to a degree.  Josh is more hesitant than I have ever seen him and it's because he is playing in a way to fight his own instincts.  When you have a talent as special as him, you live with the good and the bad because the good SUBSTANTIALLY out weights the bad.
    2. SCRAP THE OVERUSE OF 12 PERSONNEL! - If we are not going to use the 12 personnel to put a ton of pressure on the defense and take advantage of mismatches, then STOP running it so much.  You are not Belichick, you have no clue how to utilize this to our advantage so stop over using it until you figure out how to make defenses pay with it.
    3. REDUCE DAVIS SNAP DOMINANCE! - There is absolutely no reason for Davis to have the most snaps on offense (96%), especially when he is producing so little with it.
      1. Shakir is starting to earn more trust with the coaches and he is making key plays when given chances to do so.  His snap % has gone up every week since week 1 where it started at 10% and was 34% week 7.  HOWEVER...Davis snap counts are NOT going down, that means we are still limiting the other personnel to keep Davis on the field more.
      2. We need more snaps that have BOTH Shakir and Kincaid on the field more.  Let Shakir work the slot short stuff so Kincaid can hit the seem, midfield, etc and put more pressure on the defense.  Right now, Kincaid is seeing too much short underneath stuff and that is not what we drafted him for.
    4. PUT JOSH UNDER CENTER MORE! - Geezus Dorsey, are you the only person who watches football that hasn't seen the significantly higher level of success and production when Josh is under center vs the shotgun????
    5. STOP RUNNING SO MUCH OUT OF SHOTGUN! - As I already said above, this offense is so much better with Allen under center, and the play action has been a major weapon of this offense.  So start lining up under center and running the ball from there too so it only further helps sell the play action even more.
    6. STUDY PHILLY QB SNEAK TUSH PUSH! - How are we not literally doing the same thing with Josh?  Yes we ran some sneaks, but they are not as good as Philly's and we don't do it often enough.  It should be a major weapon in our offense and practically immediate goto play with 1.5 yards to go or less.
    7. MORE QUICK STRIKE READS! - Josh Allen again on Sunday was night and day better on drop backs where the ball came out quickly.  And I know there is more that goes into it than just saying more quick strike reads (guys got to get open, OL needs to do its part, Josh needs to make the right read, etc).  But its pretty easy to tell when that wasn't the type of call, like when Josh makes a deep drop and then you can see the first looks are downfield which take longer to develop.
    8. THROW TO JAMES COOK! - There is no reason or excuse where James Cook shouldn't get at least 5 targets in a game.  Cook should be getting 18+ touches a game between running and receiving.  And despite being drafted to be a receiving weapon, Dorsey just isn't getting him involved enough in that area.

I mean, this isn't rocket science.  It doesn't take a professional GM or OC to look at the tape and literally see Josh playing like he has some sort of speed restrictor on his gas pedal out there.  Don't get me wrong, taking what the D gives him is something Josh needed to be better about rather than always trying to buy time to find big chunk plays.  However, there has been a gross over correction now, especially in regards to Josh using his legs to make plays.  And honestly, go watch Allen highlights, its those plays where he runs someone over, stiff arms someone, etc etc that you will see Josh the most fired up.  He feeds off those moments and it brings him to another gear few players have.

    #Alpha4OC 😎🤪😂

    1. Designed runs are going to be the most effective way to get Josh going in the run game and put stress on a defense. You don't want those though as they are designed to hit between the tackles in most instances. So what you are actually asking for is for Josh to get out of the pocket and scramble more? Have there been times this year where Josh has had the opportunity to tuck it and gain some yards, sure, but I do think this is a big step in his maturation as a QB to learn how to operate within a pocket. Is it a struggle right now, sure, but it will set us up for long-term success later.

    2. You want to scrap 12 personnel yet it has been the most successful personnel package we've had throwing the ball both with and without play action and it's not even close. You also say we're not taking advantage of mismatches within the personnel group, but you don't have a clue what you're looking for. By being in 12p and sitting in these loaded box formation we are forcing defenses out of their Cover 2 shells and allowing our receivers to do big time damage down the field. Josh on play action out of 12p this season is 23/32 for 397 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT, 12.42 A/NYPA. So, yes, we are taking major advantages of the mismatches created by 12p - you just don't know enough football to understand what those mismatches are that we're taking advantage of.

    3. Davis is the best run blocking WR we have on the roster. That's why his snap count is so high. To your point though - there is absolutely reason to get Shakir more involved in the pass game running the option routes from the slot that Cole use to run. With Knox out for an indefinite period of time I'd expect to see more of him in the slot. I'd also like to see Harty get more involved in the pass game. Harty has the physical ability to be a defensive nightmare in the slot with his speed and agility. My concern currently is that he's struggling to pick up the offense (pure speculation on my part based on a couple of Gabe's comments the other day). He's a weapon though with the ball in his hand, and when called upon this season he has shown flashes on extreme athleticism.

    4. Josh has been under center more and more - the more we've used play action in the pass game. There has to be balance.

    5. We've been at our worst running the football out of 12p which has been more under center than in gun (3.26 yards per carry). This myth that getting a full head of stem on runs helps you gain more yards just isn't true. The run game is all about taking proper paths, angles, physicality, timing, and numbers - nothing more - nothing less.

    6. They're protecting Josh as much as possible. Whether right or wrong - that's what's happening.

    7. This has to do with what the defense is giving us. I haven't gotten to the A22 from the Patriots yet, but from the broadcast it sounded like that Pats were primarily in C2 looks which takes away our deep passing game and thus opening the underneath. Against the Jags they were primarily in C3 looks and we tried to take advantage of those by running different types of levels concepts to the sidelines. It's a fantastic way to attack Cover 3, but takes longer to develop in some instances. Against the Giants they were running a lot of 1 Rat to start the game and we tried to take advantage of it with our crossers. The gameplan can not and should not look the same week to week. If it did there'd be some serious concerns with Dorsey.

    8. I agree Cook needs to get more touches in the pass game, but it certainly hasn't been for lack of trying. We've schemed him wide open multiple times on mesh and for whatever reason Allen is staring down Diggs instead of taking what the defense is giving him. We've also design various rub routes to get him open in the RedZone. His lack of targets definitely isn't because of lack of trying.

Normally I don't buy these reports, however this account had us as a team that called on Trey Lance a few days before it was known. They have been correct many times on 49er related things in the past and do seem to have some inside knowledge.

That said, it makes some sense with Milano out and Williams being benched 2 games in a row. On defense I know the hot topics are 1T and CB...but this is a position to watch in the coming week for sure.

These guys are constantly putting out feelers. Don’t think he’s not putting out feelers for multiple positions.

And specifically you want to get an idea of top end and low end so you can set a market value.

Yep.  Josh may like shotgun, but they are more effective under center.  McBeane may want 12 and 21 personnel, but safe ball control football is not the way.

Josh cooks under 11 personnel.  What the hell are they doing when Harty gets 1 catch and McD pulls him.  The fastest guy on the team except for Isabella.

Stop with this insistence on ball control and 12 personnel.  Josh likes throwing it downfield and to WR’s and is darn good at it.

Stop with handcuffing Josh running.  It’s not working.  It’s a big part of his game.

We drove in Q4 twice for TD’s because we went 11.  We also have success in empty.

The defense is seriously hurt by the losses of Daquan, Milano, Tre and temporarily Oliver.  Our defense works with interior pressure.  We had none yesterday and made Mack look all world.

This was most pathetic loss of the McD era.  You guys know me and I’m very positive about my Bills because I love them and have been in McBeanes corner, but something dramatic needs to  change

I can’t watch another performance like this with Tampa.  Besides I’ll never hear the end of it from all of my friends in Tampa.

This is exactly why they're in 12 personnel...

I didn't think Williams was very good yesterday. But he wasn't bad enough that you turn to Dodson. I really only turn to Dodson if the only other option is my 5'9, 160 lb self

He was about as bad as you could be. Couldn't line up, missed tackles, blown coverages. It was a train wreck.

watchign williams he can't tackle but more importantly it seems that he goes freelance and does his own thing - kiko alonso style.

i don't think he's maintaining his responsibilities, performing his assignments, and then getting pushed around.

i'm amazed that an undersized LB who many thought did not play powerful or big enough is being handled this way.

If there's one thing he absolutely does well it is take on and defeat blocks. This statement is silly.

    Really awful decision by McDermott.

You've got to let him take his lumps.  Especially when the guy behind him is so limited.  And what did the Pats do when Dodson came in?... immediately attacked his limitations.

While we're at it.  Jackson is showing me nothing as to why we couldn't have seen what we have in Elam before the trade deadline.  I know Elam was awful against the Jags, but he was serviceable against the Giants.

On a defense increasingly devoid of talent, the "safe" options are much tougher to hide.

This is what they did to Williams. He was awful. Couldn't even get lined up.

That same kind of "pick" we were flagged on for the Knox nullified TD.

Folks don't like to look or mention officiating, but it did impact this game and the Bills' ability to move the ball, score, and kept NE drives alive.

Hate to watch games like that.

No it's not. Murray ran square into the guy without turning his head. New England didn't even touch any of our guys - we picked ourselves because we weren't playing any version of in/out man coverage you'd like.

  8. 7 hours ago, Straight Hucklebuck said:

Most times they moved the ball (steadily). They had a steady diet of 6, 7, 4, 8 yard gains.

But it is laborious. There is an occasional Cook 22 yard run, or 18-yard bullet to Diggs.

I’ll have to see the A22, but if the Pats sat in 2 all day like the broadcast said they did then that’s really your only option until they get out of it. Can’t force the ball to covered receivers down field.

That's the point I'm trying to make.

McD took a generic question about slow starts and turned it exclusively into an offense issue. He completely ignored his defense's slow starts to games this season (and this game in particular). He's scape-goating the offense when HIS defense was a complete train wreck from the opening whistle.

The question was specifically about the offense. So yes, his answer was also specifically about the offense. Before questions even started he pointed out all the flaws in the defense yesterday and said that it all starts with him. I get people are upset, but just making up narratives to fit your agendas is odd.

Against Pat Mahomes. Sure. Mac Jones? Nah. Bills offense didn’t show up once again and it no longer an excuse

Maybe you missed my first post? I’ve put blame on both sides of the ball. Again, this isn’t a one or the other scenario. Both sides of the ball were not good.

    No playmaking man.

    Everything is excruciatingly hard.

And I love the media now crying.

This is exactly how they wanted Allen and the offense to play.

They're running the ball, Allen is checking down, Allen is not running designed or improvisation, I guess they can throw their hands up for 1 INT, but there are no chunk plays.

It now requires 10-15 play drives to

    score.

Where are the answers on the roster or what plays are need to be called?

More motion would solve all of this?

The offense wasn’t inept the first half. Just mistakes at key moments.

  12. 13 minutes ago, DabillsDaBillsDaBills said:

While I agree the offense had it's issues (to be kind) to start the game. What about McD's defense???!!???

You can't give up a 9 play 63 yard FG drive followed by a 7 play 45 yard TD drive to the worst offense in the league

It's not a one or the other thing. The OP was about the offenses slow start so I was responding to that specifically. This was by far our worst game defensively this year. Specifically (and I'll need to see the A22 to confirm) Jordan Phillips, both Dorian Williams and Tyrel Dodson, Taron Johnson and Dane Jackson looked especially bad. We were misaligned multiple times early on in the game. Our tackling was atrocious. It was bad all around.

EDIT: To be clear on Taron - it didn't have anything to do with the last touchdown - he should have had help inside on that, but didn't get it.

Q: Over the last three games, you guys have a total of 10 points in the first half. Have you been able to put your finger on anything for the slow start here?
SM: I wish I could tell you. I really do. I wish I could tell you. We talk about it. We talk about being more detailed, getting into a rhythm early, playing complementary football and all three phases working together. We haven't been able to get into a good rhythm, obviously, in the first quarter. Let's just start there. So, just overall, we've got find the answers there.

I get sick of his BS answers. How about “unacceptable” “we’re not maximizing our talent” “we’re too predictable” etc. etc. oh, but then he might hurt Dorsey’s feelings.

    Here's your issues:

    1st Series: Interception

2nd Series: Score a touchdown that gets called back because of a penalty and puts us in a 3rd and 17.

3rd Series: 3rd and 7 (again because of penalties) and Torrence gets beat bad. Has Knox for an easy 1st down on a throw we've seen him make a million times but instead he pushes the ball downfield to Diggs and it's off-target

4th Series: Drive the ball to the +18 and get stuffed (one of the few times) on 1st down on the run. 2nd Down Torrence and Morris get absolutely worked and give up immediate pressure, so much so Cook (who's the hot) doesn't even have enough time to get his head turned back and Allen has to eat it. Put us in a 3rd and 16 which Allen throws away. Terrible execution.

5th Series: Ran a play to get us to the half.

I get it - execution isn't the sexy answer, but it is the correct one. We are shooting ourselves in the foot at pivotal points in the game. Foolish penalties and assignment busts led to our 3 point first half outing.

This dude really knows his x and o’s. Football is so much more complex than it seems

I've said this before, but he's okay. Feels like he's learned the majority of his football knowledge from google as he calls things the wrong thing quite often. Doesn't seem to fully understand blocking schemes or coverages/coverage rules. Offensively he does a good job of recognizing concepts and finding a term to call it (think he's using one of the old Patriots playbooks that are out there because a lot of his terms come from their terminology), but understanding who the read is on those plays and how route progression vary based on those reads is not something he excels in. I think his offensive video's are better than the defensive ones - probably because there is more information out there on offenses than defenses? Maybe I'm just hyper-sensitive to it because I'm in it, but these videos get cringey at times.

What raw data does PFF have, that is not available to the NFL already for free?

All of the raw data that goes into film breakdown on a per play basis so things like Team, ODK, QTR, Time, Series, P&10, Series, Dn, Dist, Gain/Loss, Hash, Yd Ln, Play Type (Run or Pass), Result (Cmp, Inc, Rush, TD, etc.), PFF tracks the jersey number of every player on the field on a per play basis, Jersey number of players who touched the ball offensively on a given play (QB, RB, WR/TE), etc.

And then the teams will input their own data using their terminology for the football specific stuff. All of the base data that anyone can gather though is extremely time consuming to input manually.

I think you may have a misunderstanding of how PFF grades.

If this were the case, NFL and College teams wouldn't be paying PFF 6+ figures every year for their data.

    The grading is not one-and-done.

It is first graded by an analyst, then it gets sent for review by a more knowledgeable analyst, and then it goes for final review by a senior analyst (I remember reading that Solomon Wilcots was a senior analyst).

The teams don’t pay for the grades. Those are useless to them. The teams pay for the raw data because they can manipulate it however they want to find tendencies.

    Sure.

But as long as the data uses the same methodology for all QB's, you can still make accurate comparisons. This is because the comparisons would be based on a standardized process, which is essential for understanding relative differences or similarities.

I submitted this question to them and will report back when I hear. If I were to guess i'd say PFF, simply because of their connection PFF.

That’d be disheartening… PGF outsources their grunt work to India which for most things isn’t an issue - but you’d like to have actual football people do the subjective stuff
