What’s for Dinner?: New Year’s Edition
WhoTom replied to EmotionallyUnstable's topic in Off the Wall
When I was a college student, my older brother owned a bar. One year, he decided to entice a Super Bowl crowd by grilling steaks on the deck. (This was the mid-80s.) For $5, you'd get a 16-oz NY strip steak with a serving of potato salad. The price was pretty much a break-even point - the idea was to bring in a crowd and make money from the drinks. He did the same thing one night a week in the summer and I was the designated grill master, so I agreed to cook for the game, too. For the game, he ordered a bunch of steaks and a tub of potato salad in advance. The morning of Super Bowl Sunday, we awoke to heavy snowfall and high winds, which continued all day. My normal 5-minute drive to the bar took at least a half-hour. By game time, the only people in the bar were my brother, one bartender, one waitress, one cook (me), and four customers. I cooked eight steaks over a charcoal grill in blizzard conditions. (No flies, though! 🙂 ) Needless to say, that's a winter tradition that was NOT continued. -

No top ten for me, but I'll add the Grateful Dead to the list. Nobody, absolutely nobody, sounds like them.

Do you think that's because he's getting help from the LG or because he no longer has to give help to the LG? -

Top Five Places for People Who Don't Value their Time?

Illinois does electronic renewal, but after a few renewals they require a vision test. This year, my wife and I both had to renew, but she was eligible for online while I had to go in person for my eye test. After an hour in line, they said, "We're not doing eye tests because of Covid." Grrr. We also brought all our paperwork to get Real IDs, but because we chose one of the "express" service centers, they don't do Real IDs. Would have been nice if they'd mentioned that along with the letter informing me that I had to renew in person. Double Grrr. -

Who is that guy? I don't hear much about him from the announcers or the football pundits. -
I wake up on my stomach With my face between my hands And crawl along the floor Towards the doorway Jumpin' to my feet I try to pull myself together But I feel it in my knees And the room begins to spin And I slip and bump my head An' raise a welt Split open and melt

Roger Daltrey Janis Joplin Freddie Mercury Jerry Garcia I know Jerry is more noted for his guitar playing, but over the past 25 years, as I listen to other singers perform Dead songs, I've come to realize that Jerry's vocals don't get enough recognition. Like Daltrey, he put himself into the role of the character portrayed in the song. He didn't have Daltrey's power, but the emotions came through nonetheless.

Caffeine - America’s #1 addiction - what’s your source?

We drink whole bean coffee (Cameron's Dark Guatemalan is our favorite), ground fresh each morning, and brewed strong. I take mine black (no sugar) because I like the taste of good coffee. My wife adds milk because black coffee gives her heartburn. I drink two mugs of coffee to start each morning, and then a mug of tea (green tea or Earl Grey) for a late morning/early afternoon pick-me-up. I can buy a month's worth of Cameron's for the price of three cups of Starbucks. -
You pick the place and I'll choose the time And I'll climb the hill in my own way Just wait a while for the right day And as I rise above the treeline and the clouds I look down hearing the sound of the things you said today
