Throwback: Jim Kelly’s 1st NFL game 1986
corta765 replied to Chandler#81's topic in The Stadium Wall
Its funny because if you look at the Jets history from 1981 to 2010 the Jets were decently average with some good teams but never breaking through or having a QB that could carry the team. They actually made the AFC title 4 times in those 29 years and despite NE being there in the 2000s they made the playoffs 6 of the 10 years with 2 division crowns and an AFC title. The Jets have always well Jetted to an extent, but in the past it was more missed opportunities vs the last decade + of pure ineptitude. Before the Jets picked Darnold over Allen it was O'Brien over Marino. I always felt Pennington was a good enough starter to go the distance but once his shoulder got wrecked it was what it was (not sure though with NE there if it would have mattered) I think the issue forever with the Jets which my uncle summarized well is the Jets chased the newspaper headlines while the Giants actually chased titles. -
It’s time for a generational talent, blue chipper

the good news is the draft is a 100% sure thing and you can just pick your fav position of choice to be a generational blue chip talent -
Your thoughts on the Bills offseason so far
corta765 replied to BuffaloBill's topic in The Stadium Wall
Apparently we are playing Madden and either making new players OR teams are willing to just part with their best assets. To date the only elite level player moved was Metcalf, there has not been a single defensive player moved that was rumored & Hendrickson looks like he may be going back to CIN. -

Bingo. CIN is the worst example possible. They missed because their defense was so awful and couldn't stop a beach ball... so they have decided to run it back. -

This may be hard to believe but adding 3-4 ALL PRO talents is not exactly easy and if it was every team would do it. Even if you want to trade for a guy you need a team willing to actually move a guy also. I am sure Beane wanted and was in on Crosby/Garrett but if the team won't trade them you can't do anything about that. -

1. Acceptable - they addressed the d-line like we hoped, WR addition has been made at an area they did not have that player, and the cap is open for additional moves. 2. Same Team- As of right now feels like the same roster to me until we see it in person. Maybe the defensive line is better but would need to see it in action before I say it is a massive improvement. I honestly think the draft and later FA addition in summer may add more wrinkles that improve the roster. The threshold to improve on offense is minimal, it is the defense where you hope the improvement is pronounced. -
Chiefs played black friday and xmas this year, 49ers last year played on Thanksgiving on Xmas. Do not think for a moment the NFL cares about family, ratings only

The key to the night games is at least one of the big four games is not at night (KC/PHI/BAL/CIN) so which one is a 4:25 pm national game. Also which divisional game is at night is the other piece of the equation. My guesses: KC (MNF) PHI (SNF) CIN (Xmas Day Night) at NE (MNF) at ATL (TNF) PIT in Dublin

I wouldn't say cursed I would say mix of missed opportunities and misfortune: 2020: Breakthrough year they were not ready for the moment, but the season still felt like a success 2021: Complete failure to close. It has been talked about in nauseum but yea major major missed chance 2022: Misfortune to the max. Probably the only time in my life I have given a professional sports team a pass on performance. Before Hamlin got hurt the following happened: Week 9 - Allen's arm gets hurt vs NY impacting his ability to throw for a month and half Week 10 - Jefferson catch in OT loss. Week 11 - Game has to be moved because of snowfall Week 12 - Beat the Lions in a thriller but lose Von for the year when he had been playing superb up to that point and was the big FA signing Week 16 - Win the division but cannot return to Buffalo for two days due to the record snow closing the area Week 17 - Damar. Even before Hamlin's situation the season went from a dream to utter exhaustion with situations way outside of the teams control while fighting KC & CIN for the 1 seed. Once Hamlin nearly died I told my wife the next day the season felt over. The look on Josh's face alone summarized it all that night. I understand we make these guys out to be gladiators who fight through anything, but they are people and I couldn't imagine seeing a guy you play everyday with basically dying in front of you in the sport your supposed to love. 2022 was epic misfortune and forever feels tainted or almost stolen in sense because of how it unfolded. 2023: Misfortune/Failure - They railed to win the division but this was the worst of the teams from 2019-2023 as the defense was held together with duct tape and the offense had to rebrand midyear into a new identity which angered their top WR .... who subsequently dropped a key pass in the playoff loss. The defense was misfortune, but it was a failure coaching wise in certain areas and they couldn't finish KC off at home. 2024: Failure. This wasn't bad luck, Buffalo made too mistakes across the board including 17 and it added up for a gutting result. The coaching staff on D again failed in the most pivotal moment, the offense wasn't nearly as clean as it had been all season, 17 missed some plays you wish he had back, and Brady got schooled in a game you needed his best. Sure it was a reset year and in that sense they overachieved, but they had the chance to close and make the dance and failed. Of all the years 24' bothers me the most because the SB was that freaking close and they didn't do it. 13 seconds gets the hype but they still had another full game against a CIN team that was rolling and did beat KC in KC. I have no idea what the Bills would've done vs PHI, but this year was the closest they have been to getting to the dance and they failed to capitalize on that chance. No curse, just failure.

Nope. NFL killed that rule and some teams get no night games at all. I believe year 2 of Dan Campbell and the Lions they initially had no night games until winning their way into week 18 appearance on SNF v GB. They did get Thanksgiving, but teams do go without primetime now which honestly is for the best. Panthers last year also had no night games although they did get one game overseas and 5x 4pm games. Although there was something magical about the TEN v JAX yearly TNF game lol

A not great (for Bills) mock draft. What would you do different?!
corta765 replied to RyanC883's topic in The Stadium Wall
I would be more disappointed that DJ went for a 2nd and we didn't get him AND then instead went with another young unproven WR. -
Not impossible but CLE needs to draft a new QB then because there is not much of a draw at this time.
-
I think the NFL relents letting CBS have the golden goose for so long. Remember SNF got Bills in 21, technically Bills Chiefs in 2020 was TNF, only MNF has not got the Bills yet.
-
My point is if you want a primetime game at night the only way to guarantee that is week 17. Week 18 the NFL intentionally leaves all the games TBD so they can setup week 18 with the best matchups later. Buffalo can be home week 18 but if the game doesn't matter it will be at 1pm in a smaller window game. I know for Bills fans closing out the stadium is a big deal, but nationally it will not be as big compared to a game that has playoff or seeding implications.
-
After I posted this I forgot about those Saturday games. Certainly could see the CAR game be one on that docket. The hard thing with that is then your guaranteeing BUF week 17 at home. Week 18 it is luck of the draw with how competitive things are. Obviously playoffs last game is going to be big, but regular season wise I think is a little tougher to force in that spot.
-
Thats why I said half the home schedule is hellfire. I would agree PHI favored and BAL is prob even. KC may be even also. agreed on the flex piece, I won’t be surprised if the back half has a bunch of flexible games
-
At one point everyone thought it was GB PIT. That no longer is the case and I’ve seen nothing saying the Bills aren’t in it.
-
CBS has protected that KC game for years and I think finally it goes MNF as that is only broadcast that hasn’t received it yet. BAL has been on Xmas last two years I can see the NFL giving the day off this year which is why I did CIN

The cobwebs are coming off as we finally start entering the new NFL year. I took a bit of a hiatus just to refresh and restart for a new year and I am back for some schedule fun. I will cover more NFL related schedule news in early April but for the Bills the schedule is slowly being cast on this upcoming season and how the schedule shakes down. For starters the Bills have 9 home games this year and 8 away games, their opponents are as followed: Home: Miami, New England, NY Jets, KC, Philly, Bal, Cin, Tampa, New Orleans Away: Miami, New England, NY Jets, Car, Atl, Hou, Pit, Cle The home schedule is basically hellfire or games they should be favored. You can expect that KC/PHI/BAL/CIN & maybe TB will all receive some type of marquee viewership whether it be at 4pm or a night game. Please remember the NFL considers any game not at 1pm to be national type games which is how KCvBUF has been at 4:25 CBS for 3 straight years now. With this being the last year at the the Ralph I would expect some attention to be given to that especially week 17 or 18 to close out the regular season finale at the Ralph in style. The road schedule on the other hand is relatively favorable with HOU being the main challenge while ATL, CAR, & PIT could be feisty. Even though Diggs is probably gone I could see HOU being a primetime candidate again this year. CAR/ATL feel like games later in the season that the NFL could flex as despite the improvement by Bryce Young I am not sure the NFL gambles and puts them into primetime & ATL is a toss up on what you get although they are a major market that seemingly gets a few primetime games in the first half of every year. For 1 pm start time fans there is not a single games that requires a 4pm start as the only game west of Cleveland is Houston otherwise the rest of the away schedule is all in the eastern time zone. One thing I am curious with is how much the NFL schedules division games for the Bills in primetime. In the prior few years the league certainly made an emphasis on the Bills getting night games against MIA or NYJ as the thought was they would challenge or win the division. Right now the division feels like Buffalo and then everyone else as MIA is unpredictable and possibly stalling out with McDaniel, the Jets are rebuilding again and seem committed to starting Tyrod as their QB while maybe drafting a rookie, & New England may be the greatest upside with Maye but still need a lot of talent added to their rebuild. Anything is possible with the schedule but I would guess the Bills play a token divisional night game on TNF or MNF and then finish at home vs Miami on the chance they rebound this year to make a division race. The big bugaboo for the Bills is the potential of going overseas this season. Buffalo is not sacrificing a road game in 2025, but the NFL has seven different games global this year and the Bills are opponents of four of those seven teams this season (at CLE London, at PIT Ireland, at MIA Madrid, & at NYJ London). The NFL has not yet made a divisional matchup a game abroad, but that still leaves CLE and PIT as possible opponents. There has been rumors of the Bills in Ireland against Pittsburgh already and the two teams have a shared history with their coaches. I think the Bills have a sizable chance of going abroad this year as their profile as a team is a major draw and with Josh winning MVP I can easily see the NFL using that for marketing. On the plus side for those fans of 1 pm start times I think you can count on getting some back this year. Last year was a perfect storm as playing the NFCW meant many 4pm games (or at night) and then the mix of marquee opponents and even being flexed into 4pm to watch Josh ended up leaving Bills fans with 10 games that were at 4pm or later. The Bills are still going to get a sizable amount of games that are either 4pm or at night, but instead of 10 games it may be more like 7 this year. With the home schedule being what it is some season ticket holders will probably be annoyed with the prospect 2-3 night games and 1-2 4pm games again this year though. Finally the holiday's will see the NFL have a game again on Black Friday and with Christmas day on Thursday I would expect games on Christmas day and possibly even a game on the Dec 26th to maximize viewership (NFL has been rumored to throw a game on the 26th this year). Buffalo has been on Thanksgiving a few times this in years prior, but their only chance on that day would be the night time spot at 8:25 as we are not at DAL or DET. With that said the Bills have avoided playing Black Friday or Christmas for years and it does feel like their time may finally be arriving to be one of those teams. The Christmas Day games have been more marquee matchups whereas the first two Black Friday games were NYJ v MIA and KC v Raiders which are not exactly murders row type matchups. Kansas City played both abroad and on Christmas day in 2023 so just because the Bills are overseas or on the holiday would not preclude them from appearing in the other. Also of the big 3 QBs (Mahomes Josh & Lamar) only Josh has not played on Christmas the last two seasons so it feels like we may be due for that. That is an early look at how things shake down for the Bills viewing schedule in 2025-26. Remember the max a team can be put in for night games is 6, but the NFL considers games overseas, XMAS, Thanksgiving to all be primetime also for a team. Free agency and the draft always adds wrinkles into possible schedule matchups although last year Diggs going to HOU did not result in a primetime Bills game. The NFL is also a prove it league as Mike North (NFL schedule czar) has expressed many times over the years; if you want to be on primetime you play your way on. The Bills are a marquee draw and consistently good one for the league in ratings so predicting the upcoming year has honestly gotten easier because of this. For the sake of fun I will give my predictions on primetime type matchups as I think the Bills get 5 night games a game abroad and 2 4pm games: SNF Kansas City MNF Baltimore TNF at NE MNF at ATL Xmas Day/26th CIN 4pm PHI 4pm at HOU at Ireland vs PIT

You cannot compare across eras. The game is different, the way players train is different, the rules are so different and protect QBs to such a massive degree compared to pre 2007. People keep acting like Jim Kelly was a scrub when he finished his time as an all timer and had the stats & accolades to back it. The gap from Allen to Kelly is not nearly as wide as people keep acting. Yes Josh is more talented and I fully expect by careers end he passes Jimbo, but each needs to be evaluated by their own merit given how many factors changed over 30 years.

It is a tough debate. I broke this down on a different chat comparing Steelers with Bradshaw Ben vs Kelly & Allen. The separated right now that has Kelly ahead is the SBs and the fact in 25 he drove the team in position for win. When he retired he was top 5 or 10 in nearly every passing stat and he was one of the top 3-4 guys in his era. Allen matches Kelly in nearly all of that and has an MVP, but SB isn't here yet. One thing older QBs I give more credit to was the physicality in the game and hits QBs had to take. Today's QBs are so much more protected which allows for better play on longevity. That is no fault to Allen that he is maxing out what he is doing in the rules, but Kelly was tough as nails in a time QBs got pummeled. Right now Kelly is still tops by a little which seems perfectly ok to say as the dude is a HOF, All Pro, and was the franchise standard. I fully expect Josh to pass him by the end of his career and be the GOAT for Bills QBs. Chad Pennington is without a doubt the best since Namath. That shoulder injury ruined a promising career. Otherwise is Vinny T the best after that... yikes haha But what about Brian Brohm lol
-
He by far had a wonderful vibe haha his clothing picks alone were something else. Also the only Bills QB to be assaulted with a laser lol
-
Era weighted 1. Kelly - It truly is a shame the kick went wide right and they never finished after. He was an era defining QB and helped change the position. Allen will pass him soon but he had a great run as the standard and gave so many great moments. 2. Allen - He is a SB appearance away from leap frogging Kelly. He has done everything else and has the MVP, just one last breakthrough to finish taking the throne. 3. Kemp - Was a superb QB for the time and won two AFL titles. For the AFL he was one of the two star QBs and they were a game away from playing GB in the first SB 4. Joe Fergy Ferg! - He was a very good QB that happened to be in the 2nd level of QB starters when Bradshaw/Roger/& Tarkenton where thee guys at the time. In todays terms he was a guy like Dak and with todays playoff back then he would have gotten more press. 5. Doug Flutie - The two years he was the true starter 98/99 the team was legit and people had major playoff aspirations. He was very good in 98, 99 lukewarm but the team believed in him and I do believe the 99 team makes some type of run had he started in the Titans game. 6. Tyrod - His play in 2015 was legit good and if Rex didn't destroy the defense they were an 11 win team. Following two years he couldn't match what we hoped but he was still decent and he had a part in killing the drought. Call me sentimental but loved the dude. 7. Bledsoe - First year great, lukewarm following two years performance wise but he still had some moments in those two years 8. Fitz - I still think he gets more hype that reality of what he was, but I will say on a talented roster he makes a playoff 9. Daryl Lamonica - Whoops wish they kept him 10. Kyle Orton - He was serviceable and threw for 300 yds a few times while almost breaking the drought. He also is better then any QB I can think of in the 11 spot.
