Exactly getting rid of the fat and dead weight is easy. Using that cap space and picks to build something is the real work.

No team fills out holes completely and virtually no team is hole free. When they are they are picked apart in FA. The Broncos with Manning are perhaps the closest you've seen to a complete team recently and you have seen how quickly that fell once Peyton aged. The Bills look something like this heading into the offseason: QB 1. Allen 2. Barkley 3. Anderson if they want vet presence RB 1. McCoy 2. Ivory 3. Murphy WR. 1. Needed 2. Foster 3. Needed 4. Zay Jones 5-6-7. McKenzie/Thompson/McCloud/Possible FA or Draft TE. 1. Croom 2. Thomas (Probably address the position in FA/Draft in some capacity I still think they want to give Croom a shot) OL LT Dawkins LG Teller C Bodine RG Needed RT Needed DL: Star, Harrison, Phillips, Needed DE: Trent, Jerry, & Shaq (Possibly can use edge rusher) LB: Edmunds, Milano, Zo, Stanford CB: White, Needed, T. Johnson, Wallace, Lewis SAF: Hyde, Poyer, Bush So the offense your looking at drafting a guy like A.J. Brown or N'K Neal Harry mixed with signing a guy like Tyrell Williams. I don't believe they will address center like some because Bodine wasn't a tire fire and they can spend O-Line resources on guys like RT Daryl Williams from the Panthers or Roger Safford from the Rams if not both mixed with the draft plus a current guy like Botteger. RB you can draft late and find gold plus it does seem like they are keeping Shady for better or worse. Defense you have a DL need and CB2 need but both of those are pretty addressable and the rest of the D is pretty young and set. They could use a true pass rusher but those are not easy to find. I could see the Bills pursuing a guy like Anthony Barr or Ziggy Ansah if they hit the market, but more likely they don't and do short term options like Brandon Graham DE PHI, DT Hankins OAK, and a CB on the cheap like Buster Skrine for a shot at the CB 2 spot. The defense they will address but it will not be sexy unless it is a top pass rusher because frankly they don't need to go crazy. So yea they need 6-8 guys but they have the ability to attack them well and like I said some areas they will settle because they would rather address other places. If they got some combo of what I have suggested I would feel pretty good about the team not only going for the playoffs but challenging for the division. Our defense would be the best still in division and if the offense gets improvements like they should it can be enough to move to the middle of the league. I think that would be a heck of an improvement and have a really nice base set long term.

It is possible especially given the fact our division is relatively weaker compared to the NFC North. The two hiccups I see are the lack of solid FA WR options this off-season and the unlikely addition of a top 3 player on defense in the NFL how they got Mack. Our defense is good but it does lack that true dominant player. We have a ton a good-almost great players (Poyer Hyde White Edmunds) but only Milano at this point is what I would consider a semi dominant playmaker and he has an injury to recover from. Perhaps Edmunds turns into that he is young and talented as heck, but Chicago with Mack literally add one of the best defensive players period in his prime. That helps.

The only game I remember kinda thinking EJ had the "IT" was that Carolina game and now looking in retrospect I think it was more luck specifically that dropped INT and flag at the end. With Josh the Miami and MIN games I left saying holy crap this guy can be real good. What sucked with EJ who I was in the bandwagon big time for is he should not have started week 1. He was the definition of a project QB you needed to let sit and take it all in. He was a guy I think who just needed time and coaching if he were to ever figure it out. The problem was the defense was good enough to win with and Marrone seemed to be non surprisingly very conservative with his handling of EJ after his knee injury. My dad and I remarked at points that they drafted him to be a bit mobile from time to time yet after the injury he and the team seemed gun shy of him doing so taking away one of his best strengths. EJ was the opposite of Allen passing wise always being nervous and willing to check down whereas Josh I think goes big too much and always thinks he can make the play when he should take whats given. But his arm strength and ability to throw where he wants is one of his best traits. EJ vs. Josh in a throwoff wouldn't be close, Josh needs time just to refine himself but he can make every throw with EJ I never got that vibe.

Basically his baseline is a different version of Tyrod that is less accurate but a bit more playmaker in general especially arm wise. Issue with that is you looking at 6-10 wins max. They drafted him for 10-13 level wins. I like what I have seen and feel confident he can improve to have them in the race next year but I'd prefer to be the one driving the car to the post season not chasing like we have for two decades.

That's more or less what I am saying. Their will always be different ways that work although a good general rule of thumb is to maximize what you can during a QBs rookie deal because after that they eat space. I think great defenses though are partially a bit of luck. It requires very few injuries, the right players in their primes at the right time, and turnover luck. A big piece of having a good defense generally is just drafting BPA. Baltimore has consistently done that and mixing a somewhat decent offense with that can make a team be regularly good to sometimes great. That to me is more of the true formula because getting an all time great franchise QB requires a good bit of luck as opposed to a ten year starter like Flacco who did enough for them.

Defense you will always need to put some investments into because of age, change of scheme, etc.. I am not one who believes it's worth trying to build a great defense because the window is so short and things like turnovers are so based off luck. I think the Bills have the right philosophy of having a consistently good unit like they do and if it does be great so be it. This is a league that prefers offense like no other that should always be the focus. That said I expect a 70-30 split between offense to defense with how assets are spent. Truthfully the first round is more defense heavy earlier on. If there is a guy they like on D then go for it, but you better spend the majority of the picks on offense. FA the best players are on OL and Pass rush this year so yea if you can get Anthony Barr and a guy like Safford from the Rams do it. So I do not think its crazy to make upgrades to the D I think to a certain extent you always should. But after 2 years of spending the majority of assets on the D the focus needs to be far more offensively geared.

My understanding is that the Bills wouldn't give enough for Jax or Hou to match what they wanted. If Buffalo really wanted Big Ben they would've moved heaven and high water but Ralph at the time refused to do so non surprisingly. What's annoying is they were willing to trade a second first for Losman which at that point you might as well give what it would've taken for Big Ben. One thing I like with Beane was his willingness to move for his pick of Allen, Rosen, or Jackson rather then just settling for whoever came out of it. Far too often it felt like we have been adverse to going after QB's and instead we play it safe. Correct. The Bills issue has been they would draft 3 years worth of players for a coach and fire him forcing them to dump a lot of those players for the next coach to get his guys etc.. The lack of vision and continuity up until the last 2 years really bit the team in the butt. In the end most teams hit on 1/3 of your picks which is why collecting picks typically is preferred for a building team as opposed to spending them. That's why the 2014 Sammy pick is so incredibly frustrating in hindsight because they could've had an extra 1st and 4th to work with while still getting a WR like a Mike Evans or ODB by not moving.

I saw Elway and Farve play, Allen seems more reckless because he is a gunslinger and feels he can make every throw. I see more Farve in that relation then Elway who was a bit more surgeical and careful with his attack. That's why I said that although I could absolutely see a mix of Elway or Kelly because of his competitive nature and leadership. Only Baker I think matches that type of fire the rest are far more quiet leaders by comparison.

The number signed for does not necessarily equal the cap hit. It's all about contract structure. It has taken the Jags like 5 seasons to use all that cap space. Only this offseason are they finally going to have to shed a guy like Dareus ironically

Both teams are aging with rosters near the end outside of AB & JuJu. Steelers are lucky Mayfield didn't play week 1 otherwise they'd be chasing Cleveland. NE I never bet against but Brady has went from god to really good mortal QB his end is near.

Watching the Patriots/Steelers game it had the feel of two prizefighters who are on their last legs (finally). Don't get me wrong if I had the pick of the Patriots/Steelers or the rest of the AFC I may take those two, but overall it seems that the shroud of darkness from those two is at last nearing its end which is exciting. Consider this: Since 2001 12 of the 16 NFC teams have appeared in at least one Super Bowl with only the Lions, Vikings, Cowboys, & Redskins not making an appearance. By comparison their AFC brethren have seen just 5 of their 16 teams appear in the Super Bowl. The common theme obviously is Brady, Manning, & Big Ben and their dominance eliminated the field with ease. By the same token the NFC did have some great teams but it saw a greater spread of talent compared to what the AFC had with their big 3 (plus Rivers). McNabb, Eli, Rodgers, Wilson, Warner, Brees, Farve, Newton, and Ryan are all good to great QB's who have had their day in the sun and some still have more days. The AFC by comparison besides being dominated by those 4 just never had the talent at QB to even put up a decent fight for the majority of this time which is why it feels like a really exciting time if your fans of any of the other 14 AFC teams. The AFC looks to have a massive crop of young QB talent led by Mahomes, Luck, & Watson that hopefully are joined by the likes of Baker, Allen, Darnold, & Jackson which should hopefully bring some exciting fresh new blood and storylines finally to the table. I hope 15-16 years from now we can look back and see the AFC have 10-12 teams that got their chance in the Super Bowl and that Buffalo is one of those in the group.

I wanted him on draft night and was visibly upset with my friends when we drafted Allen. Rosen was my guy and frankly I want him to do well. But as I said above his issues are not self inflicted and go right to his front office/coaching. No QB would survive that firing line of an OL and historically QB's hit this much and bad do not succeed. Plus Arizona in general is very directionless.

Oh I am not disagreeing with you. Alex Smith for years was incredibly accurate yet he was a fringe Top 12 guy. Chad Pennington was accurate yet didn't have the arm especially after injury so accuracy is not everything. But Allen does miss 5-6 throws a game give or take, I want that down to 2-3 because it makes him more deadly. His floor already feels Taylor esq in terms of offensive production so that's good, but we are in it for his growth and potential.

Well remember different era. Elway may have been 56% but for the time that was good. Allen needs to just get to 60-61% and that'll work. I wanted and actively have watched him hoping the best. The reasons for his demise are not self inflicted and very much situational. He has a rookie HC wayyy over his head whose' OC ran a very old dated scheme that was not updated for today and 4 of his 5 O- line man are out injured. The problem is unlike Allen or Watson who both have been hit in bunches early on, he doesn't have the ability to run and make plays. They basically need a new O-line, 2 WR's, new OC, new Head coach, and a lot of help on defense next season. That is a tall order and historically QB's like Rosen who get beaten like that ala David Carr have a low success rate. Doesn't mean he can't pull a Goff but he really needs a visionary mind at OC/HC given the issues they have. Kind of what made this fun to write is to see how close are far things are next year.

With two weeks to go in the season we have a pretty good sample for all of the QB's in the big 5 of Mayfield, Darnold, Allen, Rosen, & Jackson. So after year 1 this is where I see each of these QB's pacing/turning into. Mind you things change rapidly so if Mayfield collapses into a black hole of awful play it can happen, this is just off the first season. Baker Mayfield- John Elway/Steve Young hybrid. With all due respect for Allen who is incredibly fun to watch, Mayfield is something else to watch at QB. From the moment he has taken over as the QB the Browns are 6-6 and he his been amazing to see make plays all over. His growth is certainly evident and his mobility strikes me as watching Young or Elway with his eyes always looking downfield to beat you along with a competitive fire that is infectious as all hell. Good for the long suffering fans of Cleveland and I hope he turns into a great like these two (just not at the expense of the Bills SB chances lol). Of any of these QB's becoming an all timer Baker after year 1 would be the easy bet. Sam Darnold- Tony Romo. Like Allen who had to miss time and comeback stronger Darnold has done exactly that. Rival or not Darnold certainly has had his moments and the last few games really has shown some great play. His propensity to make big plays but turn the ball over reminds me of Tony Romo who could do a ton and really had a good feel for the offense. He isn't a fiery leader like Mayfield/Allen but with some more talent around him he could make the Jets a contender for a decade. Josh Allen- Cam Newton + Brett Farve lite. The kid can ball, I was a Rosen guy admittedly but even I am have been impressed with his growth and talent. He has Cam's size and playmaking mixed with Farve's fire, arm, and just general ability to make you go are you kidding me. I don't think Allen will ever be the most accurate QB but he will improve enough to be a mix of these two. Farve is an all time great I don't know if Allen can hit that stratosphere at this point, but I think he will be really good like Newton who is successful and Farve was a QB you had to watch because of his ability to say holy sh*t how did he do that for both good and some bad. Josh Rosen- David Carr/Joey Harrington. The list of QB's who have succeeded after getting beat up the way he has and with such instability at coach/FO is not long. Situation matters big time for a QB and watching Rosen it just feels like a guy being thrown to the wolves and it's up to him to figure it out. What is most worrisome with Rosen is the fact his play has actually declined from the start of the season. He was never said to be the leader the previous three were and his best talents being quick release and accuracy are being wasted in this offense. Outside of a coach like Bruce Arains coming back or some other QB whisperer coming in with a fast west coast style attack I just do not see him making it. Lamar Jackson- Taller Doug Flutie + Steve McNair lite. He certainly is fun to watch and Baltimore is managing his first season perfectly so he can make plays but is not put in a bad situation. Watching him makes me think of what Doug Flutie could've been like if he was taller and I think his ceiling could be close to McNair who was a superb QB who could move but tear you up passing wise. I am not sure Jackson will be as accurate as a McNair but like Allen I think he can do enough where it doesn't really matter and your winning with a good QB. My major question with Jackson is what happens when he spied regularly and asked to throw more then 25 times in a game? Allen was faced with this question and did well against the Lions and against the Dolphins where he basically willed the team solo while throwing for 33 times. I would be very intrigued to see what a coach like Sean McVay or possible future coach like Lincoln Riley would do with a player like Jackson.

More the downside of the team being 5-9. Poyer didn't come on until the back half of the season, Hauschka hasn't been as good compared to last year, and White getting beat 3x straight weeks especially Jets/Lions is not how you help your probowl candidacy as voting concludes. Truthfully only Kyle Williams belongs the rest I just think needed to be more consistent. Had Milano been healthy he deserved to go.

I am with you. The first half of the season made I think even the biggest optimist which I kinda fall into questioned the overall plan a bit and had doubts about Allen. But the second half has seen true growth all over. The WR corp still needs help but Foster, Jones, & McKenzie have shown enough to be on the roster so a better #1WR would help them all into roles more fit. Croom looks awesome I wish they'd cut Clay for him. Like you said the defense is solid just keep it intact. Crossman should've been fired after the Jets game I expect his release. One thing that certainly helps the Bills next year is their schedule on paper looks not very daunting and the Patriots actually look to be human finally. At home they host rebuilding teams like Washington, Cincy, Denver, & Miami. Get those four win 2-3 of New England, Jets (they will be an issue trust me), Baltimore, and Philly your 6-2 7-1. That should be enough to get you to 10-11 wins especially with games at a rebuilding Giants team, Miami, and possibly Titans. Steelers and Cowboys will be tough but I do think they have the team to win there and to McD's credit the Bills have won big games on the road in places like KC, MIN, & ATL

Agreed. With Tyrod I felt like him hitting 300 yds was kind of a true rarity. With Allen I keep looking thinking with a little more refinement and some better help he will have days he pushes near 400.

The team did put in that policy saying if you did jump through a table and were caught you were booted so there is that. My belief is this is the 4th year now of Buffalo shenanigans in the parking lot and it's gotten routine. After a while the excitement wears off nationally (thank god) and the video submissions seem to have decreased. I will say that this year being such a poor season W/L wise certainly hurt the amount of people going and attention given. The last time the Bills were eliminated this fast from the playoffs (which truthfully felt like it mid season) was 2013. Otherwise the Bills have had solid playoff odds through November before falling apart (minus last year).
