Are the Dolphins obviously better than the Bills?
Matt_In_NH replied to Giuseppe Tognarelli's topic in The Stadium Wall
I agree to a point but if you look a little deeper than the final scores you will see the Bills had a very large advantage in some key indicators like yards gained, 3rd down efficieny. The Bills dominated the games in Miami and the playoff game. In the playoff game the Bills gains 423 yards vs 231 for the Dolphins. In Miami in week three the Bills gained 497 yards to Miami's 212 (with Tua). So while the scores were close, the actual play was not so much. The Bills got sloppy in the playoff game and they even gave up a defensive TD. We can easily flip the game in Miami by Gabe Davis holding onto the ball or even if they just had 3 more seconds to spike it and kick a FG. And then McDaniel would be 0-3 vs McDermott...see that stuff goes both ways. In particular for the playoff game, I am tired of hearing about how close it was....that does not work in the playoffs. Just like it does not work to say "the bills almost won in KC in 2021"......nope you lost period. All told in those three games the Dolphins gave the Bills all they could handle the yards were 1366 to 848. I respect the team Miami has built and I think McDaniel looks like a good coach but lets not put the cart before the horse, he has a long way to go to win 3 straight division titles, 4 playoff games in 3 years. Yeah we all know the Bills need to win the SB but people ***** all over McDermott without giving him the credit he deserves. He built this team from straight garbage to a perennial contender. One that the country wants to watch on primetime TV. His leadership has changed the culture in that locker room. So when I hear about how great McDaniel is when all he did is go 500 for one year.....lets see what the next three years brings before crowning him. Some people think the North is better than the East. -
I have the Bills 53 man roster right here

Who is better is subjective and not based on what you saw in preseason games. What matters is the people deciding who is better. They could also factor other things in such as likliehhod of a player getting poached. -
This makes a lot of sense....so long as they stay in Buffalo......

I like McDaniel as a coaching prospect but he has done nothing. They went 9-8 and lost a playoff game. Mcdermott went 9-7 and lost a playoff game his first year with a much lesser roster. McDermott is not perfect McDaniel is all hype until he does something. -
Benford - Was he being showcased? (Opinion, not a rumor)

Number 1 and 2 are totally plausible, you are reading too much into it. If you hit a home run on a 6th round pick, you dont trade him away....especially on this team with the spending limits they have moving forward, you ride that pick for everything it has! -
Chiefs Offense: Good Analysis of their Use of the 1-4 Set
Matt_In_NH replied to Old Coot's topic in The Stadium Wall
It is cat and mouse, measure/counter measure. The Bills allowed the Steelers to pass rush all day in that game but not committing anything to the run game...15 runs by RB's but 51 passes. People love to forget how much Dabol got (and deserved) criticism at times. This was one of his worst games calling plays. The Steelers just pinned their ears back and rushed, no need to read run/pass on most plays. -

I love Jerry Hughes but the Bills have big numbers at DE as it is....if they brought him in it would have to be at a min deal. No idea about Kirksey but I think Beane will be looking at MLB's both in trade and guys released. -

We pretty much agree...I updated the OP to have Klein making it......not sure though, he could be a guy they waive and then bring back after week 1. It will be intereesting to see how Beane handles it. The big questions are who if anyone gets traded and the domino affect that has. I think the Bills may be looking for a MLB. Updates prior Final Cuts Klein in, Spector out..he could be season IR or a roster gymnastics guy to get him to in season IR. Want to find a way to keep Isabella....maybe over Lawson....I think they will weigth chances of guys getting poached, needs etc. I can see them keeping 7 WR's but putting Shakir on IR -
There was a lot of that....and then there was also this once in a while

Elam now CB4 and playing kickoff coverage in the preseason

Do you know the cap implications of that? -
I can never get enough of Sneaky Joe saying "defense shmefense", "why would you run the ball when you average more yards per play passing than rushing" and other ridiculous things like "I think the D cook contract would have been terrible at the beginning of FA but since they were in TC that was good because "What else could they do with the money"". I listen to Marino's podcast its a little dry but good content. I find cover1 hard to listen to but it is also good content wise. Might check out Fina.....I also listen to Sal more than I want to but he is the best on WGR even though he is a homer. Not a fan of Glabb and Brown but I do listen occasionally...I like Tasker, he just shoots from the hip but I get the feeling I am talking to my buddy....he does have real experience to draw on which he does.

Vivek Ramaswamy for president 2024?

I did not agree with everythng he said but he is a very strong debater/quick on his feet and makes his points very well. -
At this point you have to consider Elam a disappointment but also that the book only has the first chapter written. Hopefully as the season goes he is able to grow into that spot. A guy with his traits should easily beat out Jackson and Benford. The constant handsy/grabby play I am sure is not taught but he wont stop with that.

Updates prior Preseason Game 3 Pushing for a spot: Cam Cline, Kingsley Jonathan, Andy Isabella Bubble guys: Baylon Spector, Cam Lewis, Shaq Lawson, Damien Harris, Khalil Shakir Trade candidates: Epenesa, Basham, other DE's if a team is willing to pay something. Shakir. I think Beane will be exploring anything if someone is will to provide a pick or possbly a backup tackle. I do think there could be some minor surprise cuts that both mitigate a risk and reduce cap. But I dont really see that happening. Looking at Spotrac I am surprised they guaranteed Dean Marlowe $252K and Barkley $235K when it was likely those guys would not make it. -
I thought he had a JAGish camp? At least that is what I have heard. They guy I have heard played up some is Cam Kline. I definitely think they could trade Basham if an offer was there. I hear Shaq is in danger but down the stretch last year the guy was pretty solid.

I hope he gets better at OT with age rather than wiser

In terms of DVOA and offensive/defensive rankings the Bills have to be near historic highs over the last three years in the regular season. Often a team with a great offense gives up more yards...not true with the Bills. That just shines a brighter light on the playoff results. 2019: Houston...the Bills were barely a playoff team, I think they were 50/50 to win that game and it went to OT, they lost 2020: This team was not on KC's level and they lost to them in the championship game 2021: The staff botched 2021/13 seconds. Another OT loss. 2022: IMHO The Bills were not ready for the field conditions and this contributed heavily to the slow start they never recovered from. I do also think there was supreme mental/emotional exhaustion that set in. I know what some may say but two playoff losses have been in OT which is a crap shoot, both times they played good enough on the road to make it to OT but then lost. There is some luck (or unluck) with that. The reality is the NFC has less good teams, the king of the league year in and year out is KC right now and they happen to be in the Bills conference. I don't think the staff is incompetent but they have had some bad moments in key spots, that needs to stop. The simple reality is every year not winning the SB is a disappointment right now. Fans will find a reason why the staff/organization has failed if they don't win the SB, it just comes with the territory.

I agree Morse is staying on the team but I don't understand the bolded. Every NFL team gets to have a 48 active player if its an 8th OL which most teams including the Bills take full advantage of. Bates is a versatile backup but it does not change how many OL the Bills carry or activate on gameday

If you want to solve the cap problem this year without taking from future cap, Morse is a cut target...I floated that a while back and got lambasted even though like you I figure he sticks this year. If he was to get cut we know why.....I do wonder if they opt to keep some surprise guys over some who are schedule for a couple million to save here and there a little bit. They don't have to and probably won't.
