Kyler Murray ran the ball 13 times, only got hit once
Rochesterfan replied to Penfield45's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To be fair - they say he only got tackled once. Did you even watch the game? Murray took at least 3 big shots as he slid. Twice the 49ers were called for roughing and they let the third go. Two of the three times he get hit in the head and neck area - which is how both Flacco and Alex Smith got knocked out for multiple games with concussions. The third hit was when Murray did not really slide - he slipped and fell sideways and got smacked and for some reason they flagged the 49ers and both the announcers and the booth Ref said it was a legal hit. The point is Murray took as many shots as Allen and when he slides - you see his baseball background because he gets down quick, but it exposes his head to shots. I think sliding for Allen would actually expose him to more big hits especially to his head, neck, and shoulder regions. This is especially true if he tries to get down late with guys barring down on him. I want to see him slide when he has room and has the first down, but I also do not want to see him go Kyle Orton and slide just to avoid hits and not get a first down that could lead to a win. I want him to play his game - not what Penfield45 thinks is best. Plus I think you should really fix your title which is a complete lie. He got tackled once. He took many more hits on his runs. You totally changed what actually happened and it is wrong. -
Edit: NFL removes Bass's kick from All-22 video
Rochesterfan replied to Da webster guy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not sure I understand some of this. The kick was most definitely higher than the top of the goal posts (above the uprights as they say). The question is where in regards to the goalpost was the ball as it crossed the goalpost and how is the rule written. Sal thought if any part of the ball was above the post - the kick was considered good and therefore he thought it was good, but he was not sure of the exact wording - which totally matters in a case like this. Second this is not the first time this has been an issue- as last year there was a kick where the far side judge ruled it no good and the judge under the goalpost ruled it good - after discussion they decided it was good - so this does need to be addressed. What I can not tell and what I have to trust the judge is the position of the ball at the moment it crosses the end line. The best person to judge that should be the guy standing right under goalpost and looking straight up. The easiest fix would be cameras on the top of the goalpost, but I would worry about wind and the effects on the goal post creating weird angles. We will have to see. -
Is the "read option" by the Bills something you like?
Rochesterfan replied to LB48's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yes - actually both of the hits he took in the pocket were called roughing the passer - one was a hit to the head after he threw the ball and the other was the Jets player diving from behind and taking out his right knee and ankle. -

Maybe, but at least a few of the injuries from running were the result of a QB getting lit up during the slide. Without seeing all of the data - it is hard to know, but Murray got smacked harder several of the times he “Slid” both resulting in roughing calls rather than the times he stayed up and avoided the big contact. We have seen several concussions result from QBs sliding and bringing their head right into alignment with the diving Defensive player - Smith, Flacco, etc. -

Agree 100% - the only running yards we really got early in the game were off Zone reads and designed QB runs. They were not allowing the Bills any gains with the RBs. Additionally the 2 worst hits Josh took in the game - were times he was in the pocket. Sal brought this up several times yesterday - all of the recent studies of NFL QB injuries - consistently show QBs are much more likely to get injured throwing the ball rather than runnIng with it. It doesn’t mean it can’t happen - the likelihood just is higher in the pocket - just like in his rookie year when Josh got hurt throwing - not running. -
GR Stat of the day, re: Bills vs Jets
Rochesterfan replied to Buftex's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
We sort of saw it last year when the 1st game against the Jets - the Bills threw on 12+ straight plays to start the game. The difference is the “horses” as @GG stated. We can now run 4 legit WRs and even 5WRs or 4 with Singletary out wide also. Nice to have a few pieces. -
Or maybe we just realize with the wild preseason - maybe the timing is just a bit off and we give the kid a chance to develop. Every game (except GB/Minn) featured at least one missed FG or XP and my guess is that most of these guys needed a few more pressure kicks in the pre-season with real rushes to get the timing just right. It was not just a Rookie/Young player thing (although several younger kickers missed kicks) it was veteran kickers too - like in Tennessee last evening missing 3/4 and an XP. I don’t know how things will go as we move forward, but before I move this kid into the annuals of history - I want to be sure he is not going to be the next Gary Andersen or Hopkins that we lose out on for 15 years for 1 year of service by someone else. In reality with a lack of preseason games - special teams was by far the most impacted group as it is nearly impossible to run a ton of full out kick-off and punt coverage/returns since the units share a lot of people. FGs and XPs are a bit easier to do, but still lack the pressure, rush, and adrenaline of a real game and therefore it is hard to mirror everything. This is why at most positions on kicks and punts - I believe the Bills greatly outshined the Jets. It is a big part of the coaching plans and we had a ton of experience in coverage and returns. The opposite happened at kicking FGs as we had no experience. I will give him time as teams will be switching out kickers left and right. If it continues- of course you change him out, but I want to see mor than 1 week of results.

Brian Daboll is on the hotseat starting TOMORROW
Rochesterfan replied to Penfield45's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This can’t be - I read that Daboll is on the hot seat - how could he actually gameplan based upon what other teams struggled against. I mean it is not like the Bills recognized the weakness and opened last season against the Jets with a ton of passes and repeated that along with zone reads - where we got the majority of our rushing yards. I simply can not believe that. -

Not sure I am worried about the designed runs, the worst 2 hits Josh took were in the pocket. Both times the Jets got flagged off Roughing. He was hit in the head and rolled on the back of his leg. He has a higher chance of getting hurt in the pocket. -
I voted 2 games - I think 1 game with starters to go through a 1st half and halftime - get a game feel and let teams work through these soft tissue injuries. They need full speed games to get prepared. I then want either a second game or a couple of scrimmages for the rookie/younger players to show what they can do. More of a controlled feeling than a full fledged game. The football wasn’t bad without preseason games, but I also thought it favored certain teams with more prepared coaches and stable teams.

Made no sense at all that I could figure. Worked the numbers and could not determine a reason.

Pats D looked pretty good, but they had bad Fitz out there. Miami D struggled and the Pats ran the ball down their throats using every RB and their QB. I don’t think it lasts in NE, but to start the season they were the better team and right now it looks like they may be better than the Jets also - although that match-up favors the Jets run defense. Going to be an interesting year.

That injury was bad. Looked ok at first, but then totally went the wrong way - I was like oh man that is nasty. 🤢

Rochesterfan replied to Penfield45's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Murray looked amazing in much the same way Josh looked his first year. Making throws here and there and then taking off and running. The biggest difference is how quickly he gets down and then the refs called 2 needless roughing calls on SF for hitting him once when he went head first. Allen missed a few throws, but looking around the league - many QBs missed throws yesterday and some like Brady at times - had no rhythm and he threw a lame duck pick 6 that even Winston would have been proud of. I was very happy with the game called by Daboll and even happier with the play of Allen. He showed good command and poise for the first game in this weird season - especially compared to how many other QBs looked. -
Especially because that was what the Jets Fans were counting on - they thought the Jets would run the ball down our throats because they couldn’t pass on this D. They stuffed the run the whole game.

I really do not understand this line at all. Williams played RT in 2016 for most of the season. He played well enough to remain the starter in 2017 where he was a 2nd team All-Pro at RT. Then he gets hurt 2018 and was IR’d. He returns in 2019 after the injury - played both guard positions and left tackle (He did not play RT at all in 2019). So when exactly was the right tackle struggles - his rookie year when he platooned - much like Ford? After that he took over the RT position and was solid there - good enough to get 2nd team All Pro. Yes I think Ford had some good games, but if the O-Line is better with Morse, Ford, Williams - while Mongo is out - that is how they should play. If Ford plays well at guard - you let him stay and develop. If they have some liberty to move people around - they can do that also, but I want the best 5 guys out there and a 5 year vet with All-Pro chops should be able to handle the position better than a part time 2nd year player.

Interesting - good find YOLO.

I agree with this 100%. Probably not needed and has always been a money grab. The only positive to having a preseason is that prevents teams from doing what they did this training camp and trying to hide everything and keep the media from talking. It was obvious that the Texas were totally unprepared for CEH. I would imagine even 1 preseason game using the starters and it would have made the NFL and the Texans a bit more prepared. This training camp was terrible for information and if they get rid of preseason and handle more things in the future in Orchard Park - I can see that becoming the norm.
-
I think you will see Gilliam and McKitrick sitting also. I think with limited preseason they are going to want more of the big guys as they work themselves into full game shape. They are short on LBs and all the back-ups are good on ST and I think a heavy rotation on the DLine is needed. May even see some rotation on the OLine to make sure everyone is 100%. I think they would be fine sitting a #4 TE and a #6 WR.

last first round pick to get 2nd contract?

Totally agree - Dareus was the right thing to do at the time, but without a coach to keep him motivated - it all goes South so fast. Depressing. -
RB Antonio Williams signs with Bills (Again)
Rochesterfan replied to jamiezzz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
My guess is he will be back and forth a few times depending on the team needs. It is a rough life for some of these guys and this year is going to be especially bad. I expect the Bills will be moving people on and off the PS with regularity as minor injuries creep up to assure they have the depth they want. -
Ouch - I really feel for the guy. Always seemed like a stand up dude to me.

Bills release DiMarco, injury settlement
Rochesterfan replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I am not going to make that assumption at all. DiMarco was on his last year with the Bills - maybe the Bills staff deemed the injury potentially career ending and DiMarco wants another shot to play hence an injury settlement. Maybe DiMarco agrees it is career ending and did not want to spend extra time rehabbing with Covid and would prefer to head off home and they came to an agreement. Until we see the end result- does DiMarco sign and play this year - we as fans have no way of knowing exactly why this was done. There are many factors and “heavy deceit” is not the first thing I think of. The Bills have done a great job of working with the players for what is best for them - even if it costs them a bit more. I right now would think this was a mutual decision that helps DiMarco in some way - whether it prolongs his career or allows him more time at home with his family. -

Interesting - so they went TE and OL with the cuts. Can’t say I am shocked. We will see how long it goes. I imagine that Beane is going to be active with the PS - would not be surprised if once these 2 new guys are up to speed - do they bring in others?
