If the Bills get a veteran QB...........
transplantbillsfan replied to njbuff's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well we're quibbling now. I disagree with a definitive statement like "it's definitely less than 50% he is back on the current contract," but even 25% is a helluva lot more than 5%. Like I said, we'll know in less than 2 months. -

You're pretty confident here, aren't you? Obviously, the proof will be in the pudding, but I would say the chance of Taylor being kept past the March 17th bonus date is more than 50%. This sounds like you think there's absolutely no chance he will be back here unless he takes a pay cut. Can we just have a little friendly fun? If Taylor is back without renegotiating after that March 17 bonus day, can you just p.m. me "I was wrong"...? I'll do the same for you if he's just cut -

In terms of what??? Talent??? The Bills may have less talent than some or even all of those teams, but they also might be a better team than some or all of them. That right there would be appealing to a QB. -
I mean... I literally have never seen him play and have just seen stats and projections and some descriptions, but Allen scares the hell out of me for exactly this reason!!! And EJ did it in college against much better competition with much better results. How the hell is this guy a potential top 5 pick??? Honest question, can someone convince us he's not EJ 2.0???

I completely agree Dear Buffalo #Bills Fans, Your QB is, in fact a solid starter https://twitter.com/DerekCarty/status/956385226988687361 but... just because maybe we should keep Taylor for 2018 because the vet options really aren't much better, if better at all, we should absolutely be trying to find our long term answer at the position in the draft, assuming that this draft class is as top heavy as it seems to be. -

It's not, because the coach, the coaching staff, and the offensive system is equally if not more important. I think we should basically be operating under the belief that we have the coach in McDermott (good evidence of this based on this past season) along with the coaching staff and offensive system. Dabol had enough time with the Patriots and did some good things at Alabama last year with a QB who couldn't pass, so I think operating under this belief is reasonable. We might not just be a QB away. But considering how successful the team was last year with relatively inferior talent especially compared to the other teams that got to the playoffs, I hope McBeane operate as though we're a QB away. Agreed. This is pretty much why I think Taylor is likely still on the roster for one more year. -

The only reason I think this is a possibility is if the Taylor/OBD relationship is truly as irreparable as a lot of people seem to believe it is based on the benching. I personally looked at the firing of Dennison as a sign that a lot of the offensive troubles this season and particularly the reported decision to bench Taylor in favor of Peterman because he could execute Dennison's system better were more Dennison centered than anything. -

Yeah I've thought about that, too. 3 might be the spot. Or the Colts might be the trade for Luck You think the Bills are a team with drama? How are the Bills not ready to win? We just made the playoffs? I don't even particularly want Cousin's... but this is just a really weird post. -
We are currently in a 3 month window where you believe very little until it actually happens. Even things that "are currently happening" like Brian Hoyer being the Bills next QB last year are all things you don't believe until they actually happen. So good for the national media taking Beane's words to mean exactly what he said. I'm sure he makes sure to always say exactly what he thinks in the 3 month window between the season's end and the draft

I'm very amused by the talk of what they're saying about Taylor as though it was unexpected. Did anyone at all expect McDermott or Beane to say Taylor would absolutely be back in 2018 at QB? They don't have to say anything... he's under contract. They're going to do the smart thing and weigh all their options. There may not have been a "vote of confidence for Tyrod's future employment" with the Bills, but at the same time McDermott provided very specific reasons as to why he might be back when he said "the work ethic and intangibles that Tyrod brings to the table are very much appreciated and a big part of how we did things this year and what we were able to do." That combined with the fact that when asked at the end of the year PC about having a vet QB on the roster he said something about how there were several reasons (paraphrasing) he'd like a vet QB on the roster. I have a sneaky suspicion that part of that is introducing our new rookie QB to a new and seemingly fairly unique (think "we're going to be built on love" if you remember that story) culture that McDermott is trying to build in Buffalo. A lot can happen this offseason. I think McBeane are gonna go hard after a QB in the 1st. I really don't think they want to bring a vet QB in from the outside largely because of the cultural reasons I just mentioned. It's gonna be a fun ride the next couple months!

Yes, yes you absolutely make that trade. Personally, during the season I posted a thread really hoping the Colts would end up at #2 to ensure themselves getting either Darnold or Rosen so that they would be a ready and willing trade partner for either the draft pick or for Darnold or Rosen. But if the Colts are willing to part with Luck... pull the trigger.

Disagree. I think the main reason the Bills traded down in last year's draft and traded Watkins and Darby was to accrue the ammunition to trade up in this draft for a QB. In terms of value (if you're going by one of those "charts") to get into the top 5 the Bills would have to give up 2 1sts this year (which we have) and 1 2nd (which we have 2 of). Isn't it worth going up and getting your future Franchise QB (assuming McBeane are that much in love with one of these guys) and being left with "only" 1 pick in the 2nd-4th rounds and 2 picks in the 5th? If this past season proved anything for me it's that coaching and system trumps talent but having that coach and system ALONG WITH a great QB can make you a serious contender for as long as those 3 things remain in tact. -

I've said I can see picking up Alex Smith in a trade, yes. If we do there's no way in hell Taylor's still on our roster, obviously. I could see Taylor and another player or a draft pick being swapped for Smith. Sorry, thought it was pretty obvious that if I thought we were to acquire Smith, Taylor would no longer be a Bill. But that would have to happen in the first few days of the league year before the roster bonus is due. But if they pay TT the 6 million bonus, I disagree that OBD no longer considers or actively tries to trade him if it's for a draft pick. At that point it would not be for a vet QB like Smith. -

Nah, I could see them paying the $6 million bonus and then seeing something happen in the draft they really didn't expect in a good way and throwing Taylor in as part of a trade package. As for the Taylor being a starter again in 2018. It might still happen, but that'll be his last year in Buffalo. -
Mayfield may not play in Senior Bowl
transplantbillsfan replied to MrEpsYtown's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He's 6' 3/8", 220 lbs with 9 1/2 inch hands. I'm sure Mayfield has enough on film to solidify him as a 1st rounder now that he's not crazy short. -

We get to find out in less than 2 months. One possibility is the Bills package Taylor in a trade to a team like Cleveland for a top 5 draft pick in the first couple days of the league year so we don't pay that roster bonus. One possibility is the Bills trade Taylor by himself or as part of a package for another QB like Alex Smith with every intention of drafting a 1st round QB, too. One possibility is the Bills keep Taylor, pay him his bonus, indicating that they're good with him on the team for 2018 while also waiting and seeing what unfolds on draft day and being open to all offers if the draft shakes a way they like. I think the last possibility is the most likely, but we'll see. -

Uhhhh... wait... did you think I was saying it would be Taylor for the #4 overall pick? If that's what you thought I was saying, I wasn't. Taylor would be part of a package. -
Ummm... what??? http://www.buffalobills.com/news/article-1/Top-5-takeaways-from-Sean-McDermotts-media-availability-at-the-Senior-Bowl/632e33c0-ef70-4b92-9a4c-d2c25ce2210c 2. NO DECISION YET ON TYROD TAYLOR’S FUTURE WITH THE BILLS Speaking at the Senior Bowl, McDermott said several times that he, his coaching staff, and the personnel department are still very early in the evaluation stage of last year’s Bills roster. And when asked about the future of veteran QB Tyrod Taylor, the head coach says they’re still evaluating. “I mentioned before the work ethic and intangibles that Tyrod brings to the table are very much appreciated and a big part of how we did things this year and what we were able to do,” the head coach told reporters. “I thought he did some good things. Overall, we’ll continue to evaluate where we are and what’s right for this organization.”
