The impact of Shady's contract?
Drunken Pygmy Goat replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like how the draft played out. Gaining an extra 1st next meant not getting a "star" (potentially) at 10. White was a solid selection near the end of the 1st, and won't cost as much on his rookie deal than a player at 10 would have. As for FA, part of why that played out the way it did was because of the "star" player deals that the Bills had given out over the last 2 years. Perhaps the new philosophy is to avoid them, but considering the cap space, the Bills really weren't in a position to make a big splash signing even if they wanted to. We've had one offseason with McDermott at the helm, so it's a small sample size, but part of the idea that the Bills new philosophy of avoiding stars, as Vic says, is by default. Kind of short sighted, IMO. The Bills had more holes to fill on the roster this offseason than I can remember in years past. They brought in mostly "low key" players to fill them, and gained draft capital for the future. Doing this sets the team up for future success, and possibly affords the coaching staff some security in years 3 and beyond. -

Polian - McD, "he's Marv-like".
Drunken Pygmy Goat replied to ChanOverChin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The comparison was based on demeanor and approach. That's where he believes McDermott is "Marv-like". Polian clearly believes McDermott has certain traits that he likes in a coach. No one knows just how well he'll do as a HC, but one thing is for certain: he means business. He seems like a very structured person, something that was severely lacking with the last regime. That doesn't necessarily mean that he isn't a "player's coach", but that was basically all that Rex had going for him. You can be a player's coach, and be a disciplinarian. By all accounts, players loved playing under McDermott. -

Bills want "success" before building new stadium
Drunken Pygmy Goat replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I suppose that's correct, in a way, but the scenario isn't quite the same as the traditional public funding methods. It's backwards, but being in Miami, it's much more feasible than it would be in Buffalo. In mamy cases of public funding, local municipalities will enforce things like hotel, car rental, and restaurant tax increases in order to pay off loaned money. In the case of Ross and the Dolphins, they paid upfront, and will be repaid a portion of the total. The money they will receive will be directly effected by the owners' efforts to secure marquee sporting events to the stadium. Those events will generate significant revenue for Dade county. This deal was a win for both sides. Instead of caving, the county stood their ground and didn't give in to the demands of the Dolphins, that would have required tax money from a current pool to be used to finance the renovation, for a team that was already over $200 mil in debt. The Dolphins avoided paying off bond money with interest. Instead, the "help" they will receive will be generated from money spent by visitors to the area, in town for marquee events, rather than increasing taxes to restaurants, affecting locals, (hotel and car rental taxes affect out-of-towners mostly), and not taking money that should be used in other, more important areas. Basically, the stadium owners need to secure events that create economic boon to the area, in order to receive their "help" with money. It's a great method, that doesn't have any major effect on local residents. PBME (performance-based marquee events) grants will only be paid off by the county's portion of the Convention Development Tax funds. Those events will more than cover for those grants to be paid off. -

Not saying I disagree with the idea, but Ross and the Dolphins were singing a different tune, just over a year before the renovations to Hard Rock were approved. On Friday, Miami lawmakers ended a 60-day legislative session without coming to an agreement over funding renovations to the stadium, reports The Miami Herald. The move could put future Super Bowls at the Dolphins Sun Life Stadium in doubt. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross subsequently released a harshly worded statement, condemning Florida house speaker Will Weatherford, accusing him of dishonesty. Weatherford had rejected the pleas of lawmakers to consider a last-minute-amended version of a bill to finance the planned improvements to the stadium. He put politics before the people and the 4,000 jobs this project would have created for Miami Dade, and that is just wrong, Ross said. The rejection of the bill had immediate implications for both the Dolphins and across Florida. A vote which would have been held on May 14 for Miami-Dade County voters to give the referendum a thumbs up or down has been scrapped, at a cost to the Dolphins, themselves. Ongoing renovations to the stadium have been immediately halted, and the team says it has no plans to invest its own money into the 26-year-old facility. We cannot do this without a private-public partnership, said team CEO Mike Dee. Ross and the Dolphins eventually struck a deal with the county that doesn't include public funding, but the stadium owners (Ross owns 95%) will receive grant money from the county for each marquee event that the stadium hosts during the length of the stadium agreement, up to $5 million per year. The Super Bowl (they'll host in 2020, IIRC) and World Cup Finals will earn them $4 mil, and NCAA Championship games will earn them $3 mil. Other tier 2-3 events will provide a bit less. So while the stadium renovations may have been privately funded, the owners will still recoup some of that money. They will essentially end up not footing the entire bill. -
Bills want "success" before building new stadium
Drunken Pygmy Goat replied to Rubes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'm just now reading through this thread, so I may be late with this reply, but what you state isn't possible. The NFL G4 program (as it currently stands) could provide around $200 mil towards stadium costs. However, use of the G4 program requires some type of public funding. -
Is this GBfan20(??) from BBMB? Hyde was a good pick up, despite what some here might say. And apparently we are way too concerned with comp picks in next year's draft...

Versatility, and depth in most cases, seems to be the theme with our signings so far. I'm indifferent on this signing. Provides depth and versatility, but expecting him to put up #2, maybe even #3 numbers is setting the bar too high, especially in this offense. His biggest constructions will probably be on ST. The Bills are probably going to draft a WR in the first couple of rounds. That should push Brown down to #3 or #4 at best. I think the Bills will be an attractive team to undrafted FAs. Also, I only counted 4 ways he can help. Hopefully he ends up providing a 5th. I did see am add in the article for 5 things you shouldn't eat...

I get that, and I'd like to see it at times, but he was so lethal with bubble screens in college because it was college. I dont think they'd be quite as potent in the pros. Sammy was lethal in college with bubble screes, because his talent level was far superior to those players lining up on the other side. I thought it was strange that the previous staff(s) didn't run a bubble screen or two to him at least every once in a while, especially since that was basically half of his college tape. Then again, Rex was gushing over Sammy in his post game presser, after he torched his Jets with slants, yet Sammy seemingly never ran slants while Rex was his HC... I just hope those are at least included in the playbook, and used sparatically just to mix things up, and I believe they will be under Dennison.

I watch a lot of 49ers. Kaep has poor throwing mechanics, and his decision making is slow at times, but he's not as bad as people make him out to be. Considering the team around him, he had a pretty good year last year. When he's on the top of his game, he's very tough to handle. With that being said, I wouldn't want him (if Taylor wasn't kept) just because of the distraction that comes along with him. The Bills have had enough off the field controversy over the last year or two.

Drunken Pygmy Goat replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Stevie Johnson may be out of football this year... If the idea is to make Shepard a #3 WR, then yeah, I'd be ticked. But I'm guessing that's not the case, and he's a very good STer. With all the recent signings, there have been two common themes: versatility, and/or ST specialist. The Bills are probably going to do something similar to what they did last offseason to fill "higher" roles. Wait until the FA dust settles, and get good value on mid/low tier FAs that can fill iimportant roles, ala Zach Brown and Lorenzo Alexander, then finish filling in the draft.
