I was also a yearbook editor and agree with your wife. I also agree that the blackface is meh (artistic expression), but the KKK stuff was completely inappropriate even 35 years ago.

I have an opinion about this situation which means nothing in the scheme of things. But to those that say stupid-stuff done 35 years ago should not impact the person you are today, for the most part, I agree. The mob-rule has to stop. 15 and 16-year-old students who are private citizens should not be up for a public lynching on Twitter, the MSM, the nightly news networks based on a cut-up video. Private citizens have a lower threshold to prove than public citizens do, and children an even lower threshold.
