Sean Payton on the end of the Bills-Chiefs game
racketmaster replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
I agree but KC did sneak him out there for a punt return that he almost took back to the house in the second half. It would not have been too hard to get Hill out there late for the return so I could see the Bills being a little concerned about letting him touch the ball in open space. I suppose they could have made a secondary call to kick deep if u saw Hill out there but to be honest just get me to the spot where they have the ball at their 25 and need about 40 yards for a fg try in 13 seconds. The squib could be argued either way but the defenses they called in the final 13 seconds were inexcusable. Hell they could have rushed 2 and literally used the extra 2 defenders to double Hill and Kelce and still left 5 more defenses in coverage. More likely a zone scheme using the 9 coverage defenders should have been called. And we used timeouts to talk over our strategy and still came out with an awful scheme for the situation. Mind boggling to me and it does raise some questions as to whether McDermott is up to the task in the biggest moments. He had Allen continually bailing out his defense and had absolutely no answer for Mahomes all game long. -
Sean Payton on the end of the Bills-Chiefs game
racketmaster replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
I would have only rushed 2 defenders with 13 seconds because it does not matter if you get home or not with that little time and with them having timeouts. If Mahomes wanted to stand back there for 11 seconds before throwing so be it. Then game is over by time ball lands. Rushing 2 makes most sense but I could have lived with 3. Rushing 4 on both plays was criminally stupid in that situation. I could care less about the squib because a lot could have happened and Bills likely would be worried about Hill being put back there and getting a big return.- 154 replies

With Allen, can the Bills de-emphasize skill positions?
racketmaster replied to Success's topic in The Stadium Wall
I understand the point because Allen by himself can elevate just about any offense to be at least decent. But the way the NFL is set up, offenses are the priority and there are quite a few teams in the AFC that can score points in a hurry with 2 of them being in the Championship game today. We were supposedly the #1 defense in the league and we’re absolutely helpless in trying to slow down, let alone stop KC. So trying to build a all star defense at the expense of your offense does not seem to make sense. I’d prefer to strengthen the offense to make sure it remains at the top of the league and I would allocate defensive $ only towards playmakers. Guys that get sacks and get or create turnovers. This way u hope when I are in a shootout that u have enough playmakers on defense that they can get the occasional takeaway even if they are still getting scored on. As much as we spent on the d line we did not have that sack machine player upfront. And I’d definitely be against extending Edwards as he does not fit the playmaker category and would cost way too much $. We need better play up front and in the back end (cb) and just average lb play to go with Milano and the defense would be just fine. I also don’t want to focus so much on the defense that McDermott begins to “trust” it or rely on them too much with punting and such. -
McDermott has always seemed reluctant to replace incumbent veteran players.
-
No, especially if he got injured then there is no option. Most teams have multiple rbs that can step in and be productive. Plus he is in final year of contract and we need to prepare for if or when he leaves for more $.

It’s time to trade for an Edge Rusher
racketmaster replied to BillMafia716ix's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'd trade Edmunds for a CB or edge rusher if there is a willing team. -
Fail Proof: 13 second strategy: For Dummies
racketmaster replied to dabillz's topic in The Stadium Wall
A good idea might have been to have 7 DBs out there in the final 13 seconds instead of rushing 4 lineman and dropping 2 of them back 3 yards from the line of scrimmage to do what I'm not exactly sure. No more than 2 rushers should have been sent since time was on our side and the longer Mahomes stayed in pocket the better. And having at least 9 true coverage defenders would have closed the windows and allowed at the very least opportunities for the defenders to make a play on the ball or a quicker tackle. Insult to injury, McDermott used timeouts in order to put the worst possible defensive scheme out there for that situation. -
Will McKenzie return punts tomorrow?
racketmaster replied to BillnutinHouston's topic in The Stadium Wall
I’d much rather have a safe punt catcher back there and just let McKenzie play on offense where he is more valuable. The Bills are not one of those teams that require great punt and kickoff returns as their offense is top shelf. If we still had Roberts it would be nice as he gives u some return bonus as well as the ball security but for now I’ll just take the ball security and smart decisions Hyde will make. -
He has been the best back on the roster since he was drafted but has been playing at a level I did not think he could play at, which is be the feature back. He has gotten better with more touches and has proven that he is at least a capable back in the red zone and short yardage. I viewed him as a solid scat back but he has evolved into more and has become a real asset as a runner.
-
Singletary ran hard yesterday and he is clearly the best rb we have on the roster right now so I'd tend to agree that he should be getting the majority of the touches. Breida is just not a good inside runner at all is limited to outside runs and the passing game. Moss has been sluggish most of year and just has been unimpressive to say the least. I still think Singletary is more of a complimentary scat back and our running game is flawed without a true power back to get the ball in obvious short yardage situations or to close out games.
-
It may not be our biggest issue because we have problems at mlb, depth in secondary, run stuffing dlineman, average oline at best, no credible deep threat or depth at te. But we are in desperate need of an rb that can get the tough dirty yards at the very least. Moss is most capable at that but has been worse than last year and he was not particularly good in 2020 to begin with. The best we have to offer is a scat back in Singletary and a pass catching back in Breida and neither can run in situations that call for a back getting the tough inside yards in short yardage situations or to close games. And what makes rb the biggest need is that the lack of a power back puts us in situations where we have to rely on our franchise qb to fill that role putting his immediate health and long term career at risk. That alone makes it the biggest need.
-
I don't mind Singletary as a complimentary back but that is all he is. Breida is overrated as he was considered a savior showing how bad the rb room is and Moss has been a complete bust. RB should have been one of the easiest spots to draft and find in free agency and they have whiffed. We have Singletary as a scat back but we lack any power runner or a back with good speed to power combination. I'd take Jordan Howard at this point just to avoid having to use Allen as much on short yardage situations as he was available in free agency. At a bare bones minimum we needed a power back. It hurt us last year when Moss was out in the playoffs as he was the only back resembling that. Moss has shown a few flashes but is very limited and a bust for where we drafted him. Bills are so desperate for that type of back they were rumored to be in on Adrian Peterson a few weeks back. We don't have enough dynamic wrs to just pass all day as almost no team can do this. There is so much pressure put on Allen and the wrs and defenses are playing the pass almost exclusively.

One other thing that needs to be addressed is WR
racketmaster replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall
Gabe Davis is a nice 3rd or 4th wr. He might be a decent number 2 with a high end qb but he is from from a star. Yes, he should probably play over a broken down aging Sanders and Beasley also seems to be losing a step. But this wr corps is not to be feared as there is nobody that can outmuscle a defender for a jump ball nor is there anyone able to take the top off a defense. And for that matter, there really isn't any wr on this team that can take a wr screen and making a bunch of guys miss. Diggs is the best we have and he has taken a step back this year but he is still a really good route runner and sideline toe tap catcher. Knox might be the most dynamic weapon as a wr option but we have to make sure he catches the ball first. -

racketmaster replied to 78thealltimegreat's topic in The Stadium Wall
McBeane seem to like to draft their skill guys in the middle rounds ensuring that we have little chance at dynamic playmakers. So glad we have Cody Ford instead of DK or AJ Brown and Epenesa over Jonathan Taylor. And the Vikings seem to have won the Diggs trade in getting Jefferson on a cheaper contract for years as well as the additional picks. But Beane probably would not have taken Jefferson anyway in the first so getting Diggs instead of wasting it on another first round average talent was probably the way to go for us. -
Not so sure why Bills fans should be concerned, we should be so proud of our team for the way we fought back and were able to take the game to overtime. The standard is no longer championship caliber but rather moral victory caliber. Good job McDermott for lowering expectations.
-
If we see Trubisky this week, Bills fans will see just how below average the team is around Allen. Beane and McDermott have been able to mask deficiencies on this team with Allen. Unfortunately, the team has put too much pressure on Allen to carry the team and he is unable to do so at this point and time.

PI calls around the league are terrible and so costly. The refs are so inconsistent and they are huge momentum plays especially when many of these weak armed qbs that throw up ducks and have their wrs come back to the ball and the defender bumps into them and flags are thrown. To me, it is a bail out call as the balls are often uncatchable or terrible passes that reward the qb. Plus, some teams get the calls much more often then others. Too often the Bills have been on the short end of the stick.

McDermott started to look like he was the real deal last year and early this season. Once the team started getting punched in the face he has gone back to his cowardly ways of punting, playing for field goals and relying on his overrated defense. It is mind boggling how much this man continues to trust his defense over the years when they frequently let us down in crunch time. That overtime was a debacle like the whole first half. When we were lucky enough to win the coin toss, McDermott should have been telling Daboll that he has 4 downs and anything close we are going for it. 3rd and 4 should have been another Allen run or a run pass option. Instead an outside the numbers pass is called. Had you allowed Allen to run, we would have likely picked up the first and kept the chains moving or been in a 4th and 1 or short 2 situation to go for it. And you have to go for it because you are playing Brady and all they would need is a field goal to win it if you punt. McDermott has been coaching weak and his team has been playing like its coach.
-
I'm not sure how this team beats NE, especially with Allen being beat up. They lack toughness and get pushed around on both sides of the ball. If we don't get up early the opposing teams can stick with the run and maintain possession and keep ball away from offense. We can beat Panthers, Falcons and Jets but we did lose to the Jags so who knows. 10-7, maybe that gets you in but this team is not going anywhere this year as constructed. Even if they make the playoffs, they will be road games against good teams. We can matchup against the Bengals, Chargers and NE is not very talented so maybe them as well. KC was a good matchup but they have rebuilt their defensive front and are playing good defense and have focused on running the ball, which they can do. I just can't see the Bills beating KC, TN, or Colts on the road and then having to do it again the next week.

If the Bills re-sign Edmunds, they're stupid.
racketmaster replied to damj's topic in The Stadium Wall
The way Beane has been operating lately he will sign Edmunds to a big extension as well as giving Cody Ford a new deal. Not only do you trade up for those guys (passing over other talent and using draft capital) he will waste cap $ keeping them around. -
This team is a paper tiger and Allen is the only thing keeping this team from being a complete disaster. The team can only run the football effectively when the other team is completely playing the pass. Then Singletary can rip off 8-9 yard runs. As soon as it is 3rd and 2 or less or we need to run to close out a game, then our running backs become useless. Allen has to use his legs on this team on designed runs and scramble plays just to try and keep opposing defenses somewhat honest. McDermott and Beane put together a team they thought could win a Super Bowl and we might not even make the playoffs. Allen has so much pressure to perform in the air and running that when he is just average, we can't move the ball with our running backs. This o-line and rb room is subpar and certainly not playoff caliber.
-
Didn’t Daboll just lose both his grandparents that he was very close with in the last month. Maybe he has been a little distracted as the game plans and adjustments have been lacking. I expect the jet sweeps and some creativity to return. It was not long ago that most fans were afraid he would leave for a head coaching job. We could use Brown and Knox back as well but I’m sure they will figure it out.

Zach Moss needs to be the lead back
racketmaster replied to Miyagi-Do Karate's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like the combination of both Singletary and Moss as they each bring different skills to the table. That said, if I was forced to have just one of them, I do think Miss is more important. Anytime he is inactive for injury we lose that hammer to grind out yards in the 4th quarter with the lead or the ability to run it inside then 10 yard line. Also, I want to limit the hits Allen takes being our short yardage back and transfer some of that load to Moss who has been effective in that area. -
RD 6, pick 19 (203): Marquez Stevenson, WR (Houston)
racketmaster replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
His play speed reminds me a little of Lee Evans. With Bills losing Brown, Stevenson could be a nice addition paired with Allen’s ability to throw deep. Browns injuries last year hurt deep ball as season went on. Diggs can get deep but is often doubled so having another deep threat is critical to keep up with the KCs of the world. And he add return ability potential as a bonus.
