They use Goff as an example I think. Well that's pretty much what the Rams did. Kid took his lumps year 1, they added a lot of stuff around him year 2. And then things took off. Next year we have 10 picks and 70 some million to spend. Now, it is on the management to use those wisely. But very similar approaches.

I read it. And it is precisely that idea that I find ridiculous. How many times have he heard throughout the league that the QB position is the most important one by far in terms of having a successful team. They did what they had to do to get their guy, to prepare for the future. and then got a young, freakish athlete to stabilize their D around for the future. That almost by definition is building for the future. You may want to focus more of your attention on how Terry wants his team to fail just so a billionaire can make more money. That's your favorite as I recall. I get that. And they did so to get two hopefully mainstays of their team for years to come. Years to come. That's sort of like saying the future.

Not sure I agree. Both came out of small school, both played pro style offense if I recall correctly. Both had pretty much ideal measurable. Wentz's stats looked better, but as one who has a pretty fair knowledge of statistics you could argue some statistical comparisons were very weak and didn't take important variables into account. Doesn't matter now though. He gets his shot starting Sunday and we'll see

Why is it you think that? I was very critical myself after the abomination last week, and said here several times they deserve whatever criticism they get. I do read carefully though, and am willing to challenge stuff that is just dumb. As to this article, to say that drafting a potential long term QB and long term leader for your D is not preparing for the future is just idiotic. How many times have we read here and elsewhere that until you have a QB you have nothing? And I'd say the same for the defensive side, especially with McD's defensive scheme.

So in the article he says a couple really stupid things. One glaring one is that he said drafting a QB and MLB to lead your offense and defense is not preparing for the future. On the contrary, it is precisely what you do when preparing for the future. It is exactly what you do. And of course he calls Allen and abject failure with no data to back it up. Just another blowhard.

How about Wentz? I think that's the best comparison. Both out of small schools, both were supposed to sit, but both got thrown in earlier thane expected, one because of injury to the placeholder and one because the placeholder was inept. We'll see what happens. If instead of Peterman being terrible last week, he's have blown out his shoulder, we'd be in the same position. So we'll see how the kid responds. If he rises to the challenge like Wentz, great.

McBeane's way of rebuilding makes no sense
oldmanfan replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
One game. When McD and Beane came in from all acocounts they told Terry they have a plan but it was going to require time. -
I personally was an advocate to sit him for a while and let him learn. But plans change. I'm trying to imagine the conversation McD had with him yesterday. Maybe along the lines of: Josjh allen! Josh Allen! Look Josh. You have to lead your troops. When I was 12 years old Josh, I lost both my parents in the same month! I had 12 brothers and sisters and I was the youngest, but they all looked up to me. And I had to lead my troops.. You have to lead your troops, son. Or something like that.

What Do You Want To See This Year?
oldmanfan replied to The Real Buffalo Joe's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I want to see the playoffs. I know they won't, but I don't want to see them take a step back. Failing that, I want to see; 1. Allen establish himself as our long term QB 2. Edmunds establish himself as our long term defensive leader 3. The two current starting G's replaced by Ike and Wyatt 4. Zay Jones show that he can be counted on as an asset at WR. -
There are some guys that don't make it if you throw them in as rookies, like Carr and such. And some that do, like the two I mentioned. And a lot more on either side of the argument. It is not just 0.0001% of NFL QBs that started as rookies and flamed out because of it. Perhaps the most direct recent example is Wentz. Came from a small school, was supposed to sit his rookie year and watch, but because of injury to Bradford got thrown in there. And he did fine. It will come down to the talent Allen has, and the intestinal fortitude he has. As to the latter, he doesn't strike me as the type that will fold under pressure. Just for fun let's count the number of posts saying he's a bust when he throws his first pick. Shhh. Facts are dangerous.

McBeane's way of rebuilding makes no sense

True. You can make arguments both ways about starting a rookie QB. Peterman had a strong off season and preseason but folds in real games apparently. So Allen gets his shot. -

Like drafting a potential long term QB. Or a stud CB. Or a stud MLB. Will all these happen? We'll see. I believe you need to be strong up front. I anticipate a lot of attention paid to both lines as they go forward. I'll be disappointed if they don't do that. -
The Organizational Incompetence of the Buffalo Bills
oldmanfan replied to CamboBill's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Right now. But watch for guys like Shady and Kyle and Zo to retire or move on after this season. It may or may not he the Carr situation; that will be determined by the mental makeup of the player. Allen seems pretty tough. Plus the two situations are somewhat dissimilar. Houston was an expansion franchise. It was going to take them a while to build in the trenches. Buffalo got caught with an unexpected retirement and a perhaps slightly predictable losing of the mind of two good players. They felt Groy could do the job at one and hopefully he gets his head out of his butt and starts playing the way he did a couple years ago. The other one I hope a rookie comes in and starts soon. Either way they have 10 picks and millions of cap dollars next year to address this, so Allen may have one year behind a suspect line vs. several that Carr had.
