I don't think the Pegulas signed off on this

Yep. And teams hurting at safety kick themselves in the head for not signing Poyer or Hyde. Ad infinitum -

The legitimate question for Terry would be why the team seemed unprepared the first half of each game. I'd ask that if I were him. -

All the arguing about who they kept, should have kept, blah, blah, blah is just Monday morning QBing. Some of the same folks being critical today would have been critical if they had kept certain guys and would be complaining they aren't worth their salaries, etc. Which is why fan is short for fanatic; some folks just get irrational and it's impossible to reason with an irrational individual. Where I would be asking questions if I were Terry is with the two first halves of the first two games. In both cases it seemed clear to me that the other team was both much more well prepared, and more eager to play. Yesterday rivers had his way with the D, almost as if he was calling the D against his own offense. That failure of preparation is clearly on the coaching staff, and that merits questions from the owner. -
I think you can fairly criticize the current regime for some of these. Gaines now looks like a bad move considering the cowardly thing Davis just did. And I said yesterday I was puzzled by the Kerley thing. Others you can't be as critical of. I don't think Woods was going to sign in free agency; the fact that they never made a serious move to sign him was a signal to me that they knew Woods wanted to move along. And Goodwin? Sorry, but that's revisionist history. He could not stay on the field here. And then guys like Gilmore were really Whaley's issue before the current regime could do much. Looking at all the moves I would like to have Gaines still here. Maybe Darby. I might have looked at other assets to trade Cincy other than Glenn, but then again they needed O line help and Glenn was hurt essentially all last season, with a big cap hit to boot. I don't think I would have given a third for Benjaming given his nonchalance lately; I always liked Sammy and would have liked to see him stay but he had his own issues as well. And Dareus I can't blame them for at all; so many coaches, Kyle, etc. could not get through to the kid. I would have looked for an edge rusher elsewhere and not given Murphy a contract even though it's a very temporary hit. So some of the moves they've made to stay competitive this year haven't panned out as well as they'd like, and that's on them. Going forward, they have to make sure they draft well (they did this year) and pick the right FAs.

Writing in caps is just childish. They want to compete short and long term. The moves they made are not contradictory. To compete long term they knew they needed a young franchise-like QB and a leader for their D. They made moves to get them in this draft. They knew they wanted to take their cap hit completely and get it over with. They did that. You keep harping on Kerley and Holmes as if those are definitive proof of something. Kerley I suspect will bounce on and off the roster for the year. Holmes is not as good or bad as any other #4 receiver and is a guy they count on for special teams. Quit acting like a child, read what other people offer, and answer them instead of just writing the same rants (and in capitals no less as if that means anything).

They are not completely tearing it down and rebuilding. They said last year they have short term and long term goals. They do this year as well. They can't get rid of every veteran, and it doesn't mean every young kid plays before a vet is they think the vet is better. This year will be a longer year because e they have a rookie QB that is learning, and a rookie MLB that is learning. Plus they need to improve their lines (and there I would say the young guys like Teller should get their shot sooner vs. later). You are so busy trying to make snarky comments you don't actually read. They have a lot of work to do, as I've outlined in other posts this morning. And their plan will necessitate good personnel decisions. As does the plan of every other team in the league.

Top 5 Buffalo Bills Quitters
oldmanfan replied to BringBackFergy's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lou Saban will always top the list -
Last year the HC and GM said they were not going to sacrifice short term for long term, and they were right. They got to the playoffs. This season should be no different. But they have to address some gaping issues, including the O line interior and why they got off to such a terrible start on D in both games. They have some young guys like Edmunds who need to learn I get that, but then at least be aggressive with your D calls. Try and take the game to the other team instead of the other way around. It will be really interesting to see if McD calls the defensive signals the entire game next week.
-
They're ripping the band aid off quickly rather than slowly. I liked what I saw from Allen; no deer in the headlights look. Foster and Jones made plays. Edmunds had a tough day but a learning experience. No one will throw at White. Milano looked pretty good. So they have young pieces to build around. That said, McD and Beane have challenges. Short term, McD has to figure out why his team comes out so far behind the 8 ball. Is it his coordinators? Especially Frazier? What about Castillo? Does he need to change anyone? Do they need to bring in another backup QB to help Allen? They need to scour other rosters to get some more DBs. And linemen perhaps? How long do you go with guys on the interior of the O line that are struggling like they're struggling? Long term they have a plan. I'm OK with the plan. They have their QB, MLB, star CB, safeites, LT. But the success of their plan will depend on just how good they are at picking the right guys in the draft and FA. Draft they look pretty good so far, FA not as much. But they were limited by cap space to go after top FAs. Like any organization they'll rise and fall by these decisions.

[Vague Title] The future is ok
oldmanfan replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The folks crowing about them getting fired are like the annoying little gnats that fly around you outside. Annoying but ultimately of little consequence. McD has a tough road ahead, has some big decisions to make. If he feels he has to call the D why have Frazier? Does he need to change his O line coach? But losingvthe locker room? No way. Not the way they played in the decongestants half after they found out about Davis. The Davis thing reinforces McDs belief you need guys that have football as a priority. It's why you don't waste time with Gordon. And why I'd be looking really close at Benjamin right now. -
Is Doug Marrone a better coach than Sean McDermott?
oldmanfan replied to BringBackOrton's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Too early to tell. Both pretty good. My take with Marrone is he wanted total control, and his power play didn't work. So he took the out clause, and then found out he wasn't as popular in the marketplace as he thought. So with Jacksonville he swallowed his pride knowing Coughlin calls the shots, and focused on coaching he's doing pretty good. McD did a good job last year. This year he'll be challengedz -
They need to make some more moves obviously. In no particular order: 1. McD take the D calls over from Frazier 2. Let Clay and Shady and Benjamin either by trade later this year or offseason. 3. Target the following in next year's draft/FA - edge rusher -WR - O linemen They have pieces now. Got their QB, got their leader on D in Edmunds (unless you are the sort who believe guys have to be AllProd coming in). Got their solid CB and a good LT.
