As I said, a juvenile response on your part. -

That is his personality. If he sat stone faced on the sideline like Belicheat or Landry you'd criticize that. If he sat on the sidelines screaming like Lombardi or Parcells you'd criticize that. If he called a ref an overofficious jerk, guess what you'd do? Meanwhile, in an si.com article this week they talked about how great a coach he is getting a team with our talent last year to the playoffs. He does good and bad things like most coaches. Getting on him for clapping is juvenile. -

I watch the film and he does that job more often than not. Part of it is Edmunds learning what gaps to hit. and sometimes Start does not win his battles. -

Here's some substantial. His job is to tie up blockers in the middle so other guys can fill gaps and make tackles. He won't get many solo tackles. He won't get many sacks. -

Revisionist history is a wonderful thing. Just to remind us all about what was said pre-draft about Mahomes, here is a quote from Greg Cosell: “The true definition of the word prospect,” Cosell wrote in his official, point-form, pre-draft analysis of Mahomes. “A talented thrower with an NFL arm and the ability to drive the ball and throw with touch, but lacking any refinement and polish for the position. A sandlot-and-playground player at this point. Will initially struggle with the disciplines of playing under centre. How difficult will it be to lose that freewheeling, gunslinger mentality?” This is just one example. I am one that thinks college QBs get way overanalyzed, but for all of those rats sneaking up out of the woodwork now to say they knew Mahomes would be great, that we should have taken him, and so on, give me a break. No you didn't. You're the same sort that will now look back and say you would have taken Brady early. I didn't want Mahomes, I wanted Watson. And Watson has been a bit up and down. I didn't want Allen, I wanted Rosen. But Allen Is showing me some things, and I think as the game slows down and he gets some linemen around him he'll do fine. But we'll see. For those calling for the firing of McD because he didn't draft Mahomes, again give me a break. For those calling for the firing of Beane because he didn't draft him even though he wasn't even the GM at the time, you're completely delusional. The current regime will be judged on two things. One, is Allen the guy? Two, will they use the picks and cap space they've created to bring in guys that will; make the team a consistent winner. Their plan involves both; if their plan works great, and if not they will rightfully lose their jobs. They won't because they (and again not they, and you could argue not even McD) passed on one guy who had question marks coming out of college. -

You're the guy who said Winston would be an all time great and that you would have traded anything to get him. You have zero credibility when it comes to judging QBs. -

Memories are very foggy here. Going into that draft there were plenty of questions about Mahomes. People were concerned about his mechanics, especially his footwork. Concern was expressed over him coming out of a one read spread offense and whether he would be able to adapt to the pro game. I personally wanted Watson, but concerns about his game as well. Memories about our weapons are foggy as well. People bring up not keeping Goodwin, and forget how ineffective he was here. People forget Woods wanted to get back to the West coast. Sammy has been discussed to death. Good for Mahomes. He's playing well. Watson is a bit up and down now. Trubisky has been spotty and just had his best game. Allen looked good last week and not good Sunday. I will judge McD and Beane by decisions they make, not ones they don't make. When teams ahead of us in last year's draft see a CB get torched do they scream they could have had Tredavious? Allen is their guy. They now need to get a line in front of him (situations with Wood and Richie didn't help), WRs have to catch the ball. They have a ton of picks and a ton of cap space. Their future lies in how well they use those assets. -
Josh Allen: A fawn in headlights

As often times rookies do. I'd be interested in the blitz pickups. Is he calling out protections? Bodine? Are they seeing it and the line just isn't blocking it? -

We have a lot more data on JP than we do now on Allen. JP's problem was that he could never get the game to slow down enough for him and as a result he ran all over the field. He was a deer in the headlights. I don't see that in Allen. He hangs in there too long at times, not long enough at other times. But he doesn't look scared. JP many times look scared. -
No. Never. They can play football until the next millennium and the Bills will never have an offense. Sigh.....

Allen is a budding superstar
oldmanfan replied to Victory Formation's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tough day for him yesterday. The hysteria over him being a budding superstar was misplaced last week. The hysteria over him being terrible and will never improve and we need to draft another QB this coming year and on and on is , if anything, even more hysterical than saying he's a budding superstar last week. Objectively, what I saw was a kid who, when given some time by his O line, was able to go through his projections and deliver a good ball. Saw that last week, saw it on occasion yesterday. I also saw a young QB that did not do that, and may have bailed out a bit too quickly. He held on to the ball too long at times looking to make a play. I saw some very accurate balls thrown, and some not. In short, what I saw was a rookie QB that could use some help and some time to develop. Daboll needs to give the kid some outlets. Swing passes, short routes, etc. The O line has to figure out how to block blitz packages; is Bodine calling out the blocking schemes, Allen? I've said since week one I'd bench Miller and Ducasse and get two new guards. Best thing I saw is that he doesn't have the deer in the headlights look like I saw from JP and others. He'll learn from this, he'll grow. He I will bet won't make that same desperate throw back into the middle of the field waiting to get picked off throw. Rookie QBs don't make or break their careers in three games, regardless of how good or bad they look. -
What would I do right now? 1. Have a heart to heart with my OC and dial up Shady more. Dial up some short passes, bail out options etc. for my young QB. 2. Simplify my blocking schemes. Go man on man vs. zone blocking schemes. Or consider bringing in a better O line coach. 3. Bench or trade Benjamin. Get on the waiver wire and bring in some young, hungry WRs. Benjamin does not look the least interested in playing football.

Tough day for Allen. Needs to learn from today. Get the ball out quicker if throwing it away. Would help if he had some better weapons of course. I see some positives. He still does not have the deer in the headlights look to him. On the rare occasions he was protected went through progressions and found the right guys. But too rare of course. -

First we did not trade the farm. Second he does look bad today. Third, he did not look bad last week. Fourth, young QBs learn. Fifth, even veteran QBs get fooled as in Rogers getting sacked twice. Sixth, we also need more help on the O line (is it Bodine not calling the right protections or Allen) and a WR that can catch. Seventh, it would help if Allen had some outlet routes available. I'll stop there. -

Yeah but he missed two blitzes. Which is exactly what you criticized Allen about. And if bourse now change the subject. Allen looks bad today. He'll learn. -

Learning day for the young QB -
The original question was how the rookie class of 83 looked in 83. Marino was a stud his rookie year. Elastic struggled a bit but you could tell he was going to be good. The others didn't play much. Different times now with all these kids playing early. But to say this class is better than a class with 3 HOFers is premature to say the least.
