I agree we have many holes to fill. None of them more glaring than our lack of an elite edge rusher who can manufacture pressure on his own. We will have to use an early pick to find that guy anyway, assuming he’s even there when it’s our turn to pick in the first place. And even then we’d be drafting a prospect who hasn’t proved anything at the next level, let alone been named All Pro at multiple positions and defensive MVP. Other than on a blue chip QB (which we already have, ostensibly), I can’t think of a better use of “draft capital.”
Yup. You don't use high 1st round picks on O-linemen. You spend them on elite pass rushers. I'm still all in on trading for Mack although I highly doubt it will actually happen.

With the blocking in front of Allen maybe he just wanted to get the kid off the field before Atkins ate him.
This was my thought too. The punting unit practically sprinted onto the field. In a real game he would have challenged that.

They knew it and they sent the house.
What scares me is they really weren't sending the house. They were mostly rushing on 4. Even when we had extra blockers in they were getting to Allen in no time. He's used to our slow front 4 in practice so he wasn't ready for a real pass rush.

Peterman will set an unbreakable career record for pick sixes per attempt.
The one pass he can't make is a curl or out to the far right sideline. I think he completed a deep out to the left to Kerley yesterday. And his pass to Reilly over the middle in between 3 defenders had plenty of zip on it. They just need to take out that one play to the right.

Offensive line is the hardest position to fill in the NFL right now other than QB. Our two best offensive linemen from last year retired. It's just bad luck. If there's one thing I'd criticize McBeane for it's that they've been too willing to trade up in the draft (Jones, Dawkins, Edmunds) which left them with less picks to draft line depth.

But why? Was it Allen or the line? That’s my question. It seems people are split.
You should watch for yourself to know for sure. To me it was 80% the line and maybe 20% Allen. But that's not grading him on a curve, that's just what I would consider the blame for any NFL QB. For a rookie I can't really blame him at all because he had zero chance to get in a rhythm. His first pass hit Clay in the hands and was dropped. He had a perfect pass downfield to Kelvin Benjamin in double coverage, it him in the hands and was dropped. He had one of his signature escapes from the pocket and ran for a big 3rd down conversion, but the officials shorted him and for some reason we didn't challenge the spot. Every other play i can think of there was pressure within 2-4 seconds. Probably a couple of those plays he could have done something but it's hard to tell from the broadcast footage.

I didn’t watch. I have no idea what happened other than it was ugly as hell.
Whatever you're imagining, it was worse than that.

There were a few times he had a chance to make plays and failed. Held the ball too long on a few occasions. Stared down WR, that according to one of the Bengals CB's.
The whole offense had a bad day, its preseason, so i don't put too much stock into it. But to me, it seems Allen is not ready.
I agree with this. People talk about Peterman only looking good at preseason game speed. Yesterday Josh Allen got his first taste of real NFL game speed and he isn't ready yet. He's about a second behind which is worth a lot at this level. He needs a little more time to refine his internal clock because he was definitely staring people down yesterday. And to be fair 90% of rookie QBs would have looked exactly the same in those conditions. Right now Peterman can handle the offensive line problems better than Allen, and even if he can't I'd still rather it be him taking the hits.

This is wrong. What was shown is that the line didn't play well enough to let the plays called by the OC to develop properly. We also learned that Allen doesn't commit turnovers in those situations.
The underthrown ball to Clay should have been a pick. So this isn't exactly right. I thought Allen and Peterman both threw 1 interceptable ball. But Peterman had a lot more good throws. One thing I'd like to see from Allen is sometimes he just needs to go down. He can't always back away from pressure and escape it. A single edge rusher, sure he can sidestep him and make a throw. If the interior collapses he needs to just go down. That's something Peterman had to learn too and I think he has.

Agreed.
There was absolutely nothing about Allen's performance today that said he's going to be ready to start against the Ravens in week 1. The beginning of our schedule is brutal, and if Allen plays like he did today we'll likely be 0-5 and discussing benching him. That would likely be a disaster for his development.
Yeah and I don't care about our record this season. We overachieved last year and it's arguable that the roster as a whole got worse. And I don't mind that. McDermott and Beane are trying to build a consistent Super Bowl contender from scratch and it was always going to take 3 years minimum to get there. The goal this year isn't to win the Super Bowl, it's to keep building for the future. Right now our best choice to achieve that goal is to make sure Allen doesn't develop PTSD. Next year our draft needs to be mostly offensive and defensive line, and I'd like to see us make a big WR signing in free agency and go into the season with Allen as the presumed starter. Or put him in this year after the bye week if Peterman is still a turnover machine.
-
The way I see it is this - if Peterman goes out and craps the bed we can make the switch and no one will bat an eye. If Allen starts week 1 and is a disaster it's hard to come back from that. After today I can't see a good argument for starting Allen over Peterman. If it turns out that Peterman's good play was just a product of preseason game speed it isn't a big deal at all.

It just seems like Daboll was running a whole different offense in the 2nd half.
He wants to unleash JA’s arm. Not something you can do with Nate. But he learned tonight he simply does not have the line to afford the time he needs for Josh’s arm plays to develop
We ran a lot of short throws last week and for some reason this week we weren't calling those routes. I do wonder how the offense would have looked if Clay and Benjamin catch two passes right in their hands and Allen is given that 1st down. In a single half of football it only takes 3 plays like that to cause a big swing in momentum.

Blame wrong word. Using it as concrete evidence that he is not the best QB on the roster, that’s my beef.
For me that's not the question. The only thing that matters is when Josh Allen is ready to start he will start. It doesn't matter what Peterman or McCarron do unless one of them improbably takes the league by storm. Allen is obviously the most talented QB on the roster, but he is not ready to lead this offense right now. They have to start Peterman until Allen can be productive in this offense. If that means he sits a year and learns while we rebuild our line and receivers, so be it.

I don't know if it's Allen's fault yet. The all 22 will show if the receivers were getting shut down. My biggest question the whole first half was where is the check down option? If he wasn't looking to his check down with pressure about to be in his face it's on him. But either way there was far too much adversity in this game for a rookie QB to be productive. Horrible blocking, dropped passes, dumb penalties, a 1st down run given a bad spot. I don't think Allen played poorly, it's just hard to evaluate it at all right now.

The reality is we lost 2 starting linemen in one offseason and the ones that stayed aren't any good other than Dawkins. Next year's draft is going to be heavy on offensive and defensive line. Until then we're stuck. Hopefully Teller develops quickly.

Well, here's the good news:
-
They need to take that pass out of the play book when Peterman is the starter. 2 OCs in a row don't seem to understand this.
-
That ball had some zip on it. It helps that he has time in the pocket.

He has looked really good honestly. Granted it's the 2nd string defense.

He didn't suck against the Panthers starters at all! But that was the first preseason game and not the 3rd. There's a difference there.
I like Peterman a lot. But you need to judge his performances accurately.
We'll never know how he would have looked against the starters today. We can only evaluate what we have to look at. I could see him still being a turnover machine in the regular season. But I could also see Allen getting seriously injured if he's put in too soon. I'll take Peterman for now.

Peterman will be the starter but allens day def wouldve looked a smidgen better if kb wanted to catch the ball in the first half
Yeah I counted 2 bad throws for Allen, both on consecutive plays. But about 4 or 5 solid throws including the great throw to Benjamin that should have been caught. And the run that should have been a 1st down. Unfortunately about 10 other plays that you can't evaluate him on.

Peterman has run THIS offense better then any other qb on the roster all preseason and it’s not even close. I wanted to see Allen win this thing today but at this point, you have to start Nate. The kid has put the work in. He looks a little like a mixture of Cousins and Pennington to me. Not as good as either but not to bad.
Yeah and he gets rid of the ball faster which is good with this o-line. I'm still worried against a real defense his arm strength will lead to picks but you can't really argue that he hasn't won the job.

I see a lot of people saying Peterman > Allen. Do people realize that Peterman is playing with the same "starters" Allen played with, but its the second string Bengals defense...............
True but he looked good against the Panthers starters too. Peterman has been the best QB this offseason. I wanted Allen to win the job today but it didn't happen. He didn't necessarily lose it but Peterman won it.

IMO these 2 throws demonstrate adequate NFL arm strength:
The one throw he has not been able to make is the curl/out routes to the far right sideline. And I'm not even sure arm strength is the main issue there. I think he stares down the receiver and the CBs are jumping the routes, which would happen for any QB regardless of their arm strength if they stared down the receiver.
