2022 NFL Week 17 (January 1, 2023) GDT Broncos @ Chiefs
HappyDays replied to muppy's topic in The Stadium Wall
Broncos send an all out blitz against Mahomes and predictably the Chiefs score a TD off of it. Stupid teams remain stupid. The Chiefs also start the 2nd half with the ball so not feeling great about this one. -

Broncos country let's ride!! After a muffed punt by Kadarius Toney, Wilson runs it in for a TD. -

I mean this is just an awful interception. -

The Broncos were moving down the field at about 4 yards a clip on that last drive. Predictably a single drop on 3rd down ended the drive. I've watched a lot of bad Bills offenses over the years but I've never seen an offense make it look so hard to move the ball. -
He's the Giants version of Duke Williams. Their WR room is so bereft of talent they have to force passes to a practice squad caliber player. If he was here he'd still be on the practice squad.

The Dolphins season could go fully off the rails today after winning the division in week 3 and starting the season 8-3. That's my rooting interest today

Chris Simms says whoever Tre is covering will be open
HappyDays replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
He also called Mahomes the best QB in his class, and Allen and Jackson as the #1 and #2 QB in their class. At the time those were considered hot takes. Simms has his QB type, he likes physical specimens with a quick release. At least he doesn't just spew random clickbait crap like a lot of other analysts. -
Would you consider the Boogie Basham pick to be a disappointment?
HappyDays replied to JohnNord's topic in The Stadium Wall
The 2020 draft was excellent. We came away with: -A top 5 at his position #1 WR -A strong #3 WR with vertical traits -One of the best and most clutch kickers in the league -An adequate #2 CB -A rotational/situational pass rusher If you don't think that's a great haul you're not being realistic. -

I don't know anybody that watches football who would say LT is less important than center. If you want to say Morse is a better player than Dawkins that's reasonable but that's not the same as more important. We lost Morse for a game and were just fine with Bates stepping in. We lost Dawkins for a game against the Patriots and our passing offense could barely function. Like I said, "not even close." It would be much MUCH easier to sustain a season ending injury to Morse than to Dawkins. If you don't agree I don't know what else I could say. -
Texans LT Laremy Tunsil Wants to be Highest Paid Tackle

They're probably going to have the #1 pick... Why do they need to get rid of their most valuable offensive player to accumulate draft capital? -

Yeah he's JUST a player at the most important position on defense. I don't care about need in the draft but DE was absolutely a big need last year. We had Hughes and Addison on their last legs and only one young player in the pipeline. It's not like he's been outright bad this year, he just hasn't made a huge impact. He's played 40% of defensive snaps. In that limited play time he has 2 sacks, 18 tackles, 5 QB hits, an interception, and a fumble recovery. I worry about his ceiling given his age but he'll get his 2nd full offseason of development and we'll see what happens. Even rotational DEs are taking up quite a bit of cap space these days. Keeping that pipeline full of young talent on rookie contracts is imperative. -

Rebuild doesn't mean completely start over. One of those picks they get in exchange for Tunsil they would have to turn around and use on a lottery ticket LT... Why not just keep the one they already have? Great players >>> draft picks, doesn't matter what part of the life cycle for in. Doubly so for a LT when you likely have a highly drafted rookie QB coming into the picture. -

HappyDays replied to JohnNord's topic in The Stadium Wall
No, Dawkins is the most important piece on our line. Not even close. And people just throw out this idea that Humphrey would be as good at guard as he is at center, but he was a full time center at Oklahoma. It is not an automatic 1:1 transition. It's certainly possible he would have made a difference on our OL this year but it isn't a game changing position. Sacks and pressures change games, not guards. The biggest problem with the OL this year is they paid the wrong guy in free agency and Spencer Brown has not developed at all. -

End of the 2nd round DE, I will give him his 3rd year before passing judgment. I'm also so sick of the Creed Humphrey talk. The way people talk around here you'd think we missed out on a game changer. He's just a center. Taking a shot at a pass rusher in the 2nd round and missing out on a center is a defensible move. Ryan Bates could step in at center next year and we wouldn't miss a beat. If Basham can even get to AJ Epenesa's production next year that would arguably be MORE valuable than anything a top tier center offers. -
Contested catch is a highly overrated skill in the pros IMO. I can count the number of above average WRs that make a living off of contested catches on one hand. Who needs contested catches when you can get open with route running and intelligence? I would take a lesser version of Stefon Diggs over Mike Williams for example, not even close.

Of the little I've read up on the draft I like Jordan Addison as our 1st round WR target. A few clips here: https://vikingswire.usatoday.com/lists/vikings-skol-search-jordan-addison-scouting-report/ Nothing flashy about his game, he just does a little bit of everything well. In our offense with Josh Allen in particular I think he would thrive. He is smart, QB friendly, instinctive reading blocks and finding holes in zone, and plucks the ball out of the air. Sounds like the kind of player that fits right into Josh Allen's motto "get open, catch the ball". And it seems that he can play outside or in the slot which means we could move him and Diggs all over the LOS. If his football character checks out he seems like a player Beane would really like. Not sure that he really pops 1st round talent but in the 30s you take what you can get.

Chris Simms says whoever Tre is covering will be open
HappyDays replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
No he thinks it will be a close game and lower scoring than what most people think. Today he predicted 23-21 Bengals with the Bengals getting a late field goal to win it. He called our zone defenses one of the best he's seen in recent years. He does not think we can run the ball on them or that anyone other than Diggs will be able to separate. His concern for the Bengals is their ability to contain Allen on scrambles. Nothing he said is outlandish. -

HappyDays replied to Einstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is a bit of a misquote. Simms was actually praising our defense, McDermott and Frazier in particular, for running an excellent zone scheme that might be one of the few in the league that can matchup well against the Bengals offense. He said the Bengals offensive scheme is simple enough for our coaches to have a good gameplan. Then he said that IF for some reason we decide to use man coverage he would think Tre White will not be able to keep up with his man because he still isn't 100%. All of this to me is obviously true. It's just that some Twitter accounts like to pull the most clickbait worthy quote they can out of the nuance. -
DJ Reader missed most of week 3 and 6 games after that. The statistic you quoted is based on the whole season. When Reader plays their run defense is substantially better. He is arguably the best run stopping DL in the league, the type that actually can make a difference for the entire defensive effort. So Chris Simms is likely right, I doubt this is a game where we can lean on the run too much.

Tom Brady, or any other QB outside of maybe the top 3 in football, isn’t saving the Raiders. They're devoid of talent on the defense and the OL. I feel the same way when people bring up Brady returning to the Pats. At this point in his career he isn't going to elevate a team.

Continuing yards after catch (YAC) mystery
HappyDays replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall
I don't have statistics to back this up but I believe back then defenses still thought man coverage was the best way to beat Allen. Our receivers just had to beat their man and Allen could throw the ball out in front of them. This year it's almost all zone, and teams know we want to run crossing routes so they're taking them away. -
Continuing yards after catch (YAC) mystery
HappyDays replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall
We featured crossing routes quite a bit when Daboll was here and still were near the bottom of the league in YAC per attempt. Teams with high YAC either call a lot of screens or have YAC specialists or both. We have neither. People blaming Allen's ball placement have no clue. Better ball placement might lead to an extra few yards here and there in this offense, not nearly enough to make a difference. The difference in teams at the top and bottom of this statistic is NOT ball placement, that's inherently ridiculous. -
Continuing yards after catch (YAC) mystery
HappyDays replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall
But part of this is also the way defenses play us. I see us run a lot of crossers against Miami because they still play man against us. Most defenses play zone against us so it's harder to mix those in. If the Bills ever want YAC to be a bigger part of this offense they need to make it a point to draft or sign a WR that can catch the ball in a window and then immediately sprint away from everyone. Easier said then done but they haven't actually tried.
