Addressing the "Josh Allen is TO machine" narrative
HappyDays replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is a comment on the team, not even a little bit on Allen's performance. So in that sense I 100% agree. There is nothing Allen could have done to beat the Eagles that day. If Mahomes played the best game of his life for the Bills that day he too would have suffered a one score loss. An average Mahomes performance from this year though, yeah it would have been a blowout. To be fair an average Josh Allen performance from this year also would have probably been a blowout. He had to be the best possible version of himself to make it close. And that version of himself is the best QB that ever played the game, I really believe that. -

It's too high of expectations for reality. It is practically impossible for Josh Allen to perform better than he did against the Eagles. -

We get blown out in that game if any other QB in the league is our starter. That's a fact. It isn't enough for Allen to be perfect. He has to be perfect-plus. Make several plays that practically defy the laws of physics and also make zero mistakes. He has to be our leading rusher and be the entire passing offense (no YAC or difficult catches). He has to account for 420 of our 505 total yards, and all 4 of our TDs. And don't forget, zero mistakes. He has to overcome his teammates costing him a bare minimum of 13 points on the scoreboard in a shootout. But remember - zero mistakes. He has to push the ball downfield into tight windows in rainy muddy weather a couple dozen times to keep our team hanging on by the skin of its teeth. But for the love of God zero mistakes. -

Just saw this on Twitter: When we have a 1 score lead with 2 minutes or less remaining in regulation we are giving up an approximately 85% series conversion rate... which is worst in the league. -

Offense definitely bears the bulk of the blame for that loss but that doesn't mean the defense is completely off the hook. Good counterexample - CJ Stroud threw an INT on each of his final two drives against the Cardinals (3 total INTs on the day). One gave the Cardinals the ball at midfield, the other gave them the ball at their own 20. The Texans defense held and did not give up a TD on either of those drives. And that was against Kyler Murrary, not Zack Wilson. So yes the defense has some culpability for the Jets loss, just like the offense has some culpability for the Pats loss. It is never 100% the fault of either side. -

Yeah I got the sense that Dorsey fed Allen's worst impulses. The PA shot play to Diggs from midfield where Allen's 2nd INT happened was an awful play call IMO. And it was designed to go to Diggs the whole time - Sherfield's dig route on the right side was clearly meant to hold Whitehead but he didn't get nearly enough depth to pull him down. Up two scores against Zach Wilson and the Jets mentally reeling after watching Rodgers go down... why are we trying for the one-play dagger at that point? In two games under Joe Brady, if you take out the meaningless hail mary INT Allen has thrown just 1 INT on 82 attempts. That's an excellent INT ratio of just 1.2%, in an offense that features a lot of tight window throws. That is not a coincidence IMO. Coaching on both sides of the ball sunk this season more than anything else. -
Which WR prospect will the Bengals screw us out of?
HappyDays replied to DrDawkinstein's topic in The Stadium Wall
Spencer Brown is entering his final year of his rookie contract and Dawkins will be 30 next season. I think an OT is very much in play in the 1st round. OL is always a need for every team at all times. -

Dane Brugler just posted his mock draft 1.0 (Athletic subscribers only): https://theathletic.com/5096030/2023/11/29/nfl-mock-draft-2024-caleb-williams-drake-maye-bears-cardinals?source=user-shared-article He has the Bengals at #15 taking Odunze. He has the Bills at #16 taking OT Amarius Mims from Georgia. In that scenario if we really like Odunze we could do a small trade up to jump the Bengals. Other WRs taken before us - #2 Marvin Harrison Jr., #6 Malik Nabers, #12 Keon Coleman. The WRs drafted after us are #23 Brian Thomas Jr. and #28 Emeka Egbuka. -
8th late-game defensive meltdown this season

Okay. You're on record saying that the worst offense in football putting up 17.1 points and 77.6 yards more than their season average is not on the defensive coaching. You should know that nobody in their right mind will agree with you because that's a ridiculous thing to say. We are not the least talented defense in football even with the injuries. So why do we sometimes play like the worst defense in football? The first play of the final drive you're blaming the players for? It happened because of an incredibly stupid blitz against a team known for screen passes. The play to start the Broncos final drive and the final meaningful play of that drive were both blitzes that led to chunk yards. The first play of Philly's final FG drive was a blitz. The last play of their game winning TD drive was, you guessed it, a blitz. Get out of here exclusively blaming the players when the coaching failures are so plainly obvious. -
So you're saying in this game we should have done exactly that?

Keon Coleman is a natural Gabe Davis replacement and a good fit for Allen's style. -

There have been several times that coaches have gone for 2 to win a game instead of 1 for a tie. Not sure about this exact scenario though. I would bet analytics encourages going for 2 there. But personally I just go off the flow of the game, and in this scenario it was obvious to me that the Eagles were going to drive for a FG and they have an almost automatic kicker, so by kicking the XP we basically forced the game into OT. So the question is do you go for OT or do you go for the win from the 2 yard line? This was not the worst decision McDermott made in the game by any means, but it was part of a pattern in those final minutes of him inexplicably trusting his defense to get a stop instead of trusting his offense which was on fire to make one play and win the game. -

Yes that's the risk. You accept a very likely win or a very likely loss. Instead of what we did which was almost guarantee OT considering how poor the defense had been up to that point. A FG drive by the Eagles was the most likely outcome by far. We could have had one play from the 2 yard line to almost certainly win the game... Yes it's absolutely a conversation at least worth having. -

McDermott's excuse for kneeling it down after this one was the rain... I mean how clueless can you be? At what point in this game did the rain slow our offense down? Also not enough discussion has been devoted to him kicking the XP after our go ahead TD (instead of going for 2 to make it a 4 point game) and not going for it on 4th and 6 in OT. Our defense hadn't been stopping the Eagles offense at all. I usually lean conservative, but this is the exact type of game scenario where you have to let your offense win the game for you. Three separate occasions in the final minutes where he inexplicably trusted our defense over our offense - kick the XP instead of going for 2, kneel down with 20 seconds left, kick a FG instead of going for it on 4th and 6. And we will have to win multiple consecutive games like this to ever win in the playoffs and win a Super Bowl! What has McDermott ever shown to make us think he can ever lead the team to do that? -
8th late-game defensive meltdown this season
HappyDays replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
I believe there was a team a couple years ago that quickly drove down for a FG in a tightly contested AFC divisional game. I believe they had somewhere between 12 and 14 seconds left. If only McDermott had seen this game maybe he would have known better! -
I agree he's better than Tyrod because he takes risks that Tyrod never took. I meant it in the sense of Tyrod never made tight window throws, it just wasn't in his nature. But he threw a pretty deep ball and obviously had mobility. Ultimately though you need an absolutely stacked team around a QB like that to go the distance. The Eagles to their credit have done it.

I time stamped it to the exact point in the video. It goes until 7:30. It's mind blowing. The exact same spot on the field over and over and over again, and we never adjusted. Great breakdown by Dan Orlovsky. Kind of off topic, but Dan Orlovsky is the only person on this panel that has a clue. I feel bad for him, putting so much work in while his coworkers make fools of themselves. Take it from me and don't bother watching anything before the time stamp or after 7:30.

Gabe Davis Miscommunication Plays this season
HappyDays replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
Take that breakdown with a big grain of salt. Erik is a huge Gabe Davis defender and has regularly touted him as an above average WR2. Erik has a bad habit of posting supposed play comparisons where the "similar" plays actually feature entirely different defensive coverages that change the discussion, which is the case here. It's annoying because he clearly understands football pretty well, but defending his position always has to come before analyzing plays objectively. I don't know why this is even controversial. Tony Romo explained it. I saw a clip of Michael Irvin talking about it. Diggs was shown on the sidelines animatedly talking to Davis while Davis listened with a frustrated look on his face. It's extremely clear that he didn't do his job on that play. WR option routes always have an option built in for cover 0 blitz. Davis never looked to see if a blitz was coming so he ran his route normally. CB inside/outside leverage only matters if a safety is in the area. With no safety there the CB can't possibly stop Davis from running straight forward into green grass without committing a defensive penalty. That is why the option is built in, to give the QB the easiest possible throw in the face of instant pressure. Davis blew it. -
To put an end to this ridiculous discussion you've hijacked my thread over - Diggs played 87 of 95 snaps yesterday. I believe that would rank among his highest single game snap shares since joining the team. Anyone questioning Diggs' mentality or desire to win is flat out trolling.

Gabe Davis Miscommunication Plays this season
HappyDays replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall
I do know, because Beane made it a point to say publicly several times that he couldn't afford Hopkins. Nevermind that he has wasted a fortune on underperforming defensive linemen and small WRs. He made sure to let us know failing to sign Hopkins wasn't his fault. -
Lol Mahomes literally threw an awful INT against the Eagles last week while in the red zone. Much worse than Allen's. Mahomes also led his team to zero 2nd half points. Hopefully next time Allen will score zero 2nd half points while also throwing 0 INTs in the 2nd half, so that losers online can't make dumb criticisms of an all-time performance.

Yet another choke job by the defense
