Bills need to trade up into the top 5
SouthNYfan replied to Klaista2k's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
(Not advocating any of these, just giving my thoughts on the situation) Hughes is due to cost like $10.5 mil each of the next 2 years, we could cut to take a $5.8 cap hit this year, or cut after next year to rake only a $2.8 He's a solid player, could be a nice throw in for another team if we want to trade, though I'm okay with keeping him. Lawson is only $2.8 and $3.2 against the cap the next 2 years, but almost triple that each year if we cut him. If MCD isn't happy with him, and isn't going to play him, then sure, trade away. He's a cheap, young, decent player though, so I'm kind of on the fence about giving up on him, but maybe he's lazy or can't do what is required for the system? Not sure. Glenn is a nightmare. He's owed #3 highest tackle salary at $14.5 million, missed a huge chunk of time, and then lost his starting job. If we cut him he's $11.5 dead cap. He can be cut after 2018 to only be $6.5 dead cap in 19. If we can trade him, I'm all for it, although I'm not sure he's worth much. Nobody is trading anything worthwhile for Taylor. He's going to be cut, so why give up assets for a guy who you can sign cheaper than the $18mil cap hit. -

Or it's ignoring the obvious -
I'm 35 and own my own home. Playing PS4 and Madden doesn't make you a teenager. Nice try though. Indy isn't trading luck. He just missed an entire season with a throwing shoulder labral tear. He is owed $24mil this year. He has 4 years and $100mil on his deal. There is no way they give up on him until seeing how he looks this year. If they have decided they don't want to risk that long term, then they will draft a QB most likely, at 3 if they see a guy they love, like what SD did with Rivers and Brees. If they go give up, nobody is going to trade for him, they'll wait until he's cut, then take a risk, when he's a FA like NO did with Brees. Putting up $$ for cousins isn't the same as luck. Nobody is even sure luck can throw a NFL caliber pass at this point after that injury. A pre-injury luck is better than cousins. Cousins at the moment is a much safer bet than luck because he's healthy. So no, nothing you've said clicks. Even if Indy was moving on, tyrod, Glenn, and #21 is nowhere near enough for #3, and if Indy was moving on they'd more than likely draft a QB (which they won't) and not trade down for a pile of crap.
-
I was thinking the same thing (I had trouble even typing that with a straight face) Are you drunk? Taking mind altering substances? You seriously think that Indy is going to trade for a backup QB who is going to be making $15mil-18mil against their cap, who might not even be better than their current backup, and who is definitely not better than luck!? They are on the hook for $24mil this year for luck They can cut him after this year, voiding 3 years $75 mil remaining, but eating about $13mil dead cap in 2019. Pick #21 +tyrod +Glenn +one of the 2nds for #3?? I mean like, I'm trying to be nice, and I appreciate the optimism, but that is one of the most laughable things I've ever read on here. If I offered that in Madden'18, the PS4 would probably reach out and slap me, then delete my game, and tell me to go back to tecmo bowl

Saying a team is better/worse based solely on their record isn't cut and dry like you seem to think it is. Strength of schedule plays a big factor. -
He'll have a lot of time for community projects when they cut him. Maybe he can tutor at UB

Damn. Beat me to it.

Also lost to draft: Forrest Lamp (guard) went to San Diego chargers in 2nd round, pick #6, was a round one projection, one of the top lineman in the country Max halpin (center) 4 year starter Darrell Williams, Jr. (Tackle and guard) starter So they lost 3 of their 5 guys starting on the OLINE, including Lamp, who was one of the best in the country. Most likely why a fairly immobile pocket qb took a lot more sacks (in conjunction with the wr/te loss as stated above)

Good post. Agreed. I just don't think we have a shot at cousins (if Denver or cards are in on him) -

I mostly agree, except for the assessment that a bridge isn't worth paying for SOMETIMES. Example: Peyton Manning was a bridge in Denver. They knew they had a win now team, couldn't wait to develop a QB. They knew he wasn't the future. They didn't have anybody behind him work out though, so far Lynch isn't great either. I am not on board with Smith, for the record, unless we are getting a guy to groom for 1-2 years behind him this year as well. If you get Smith and DON'T go for a qb now, Smith is good enough that you'll be in the 7-9 to 10-6 range, fringe playoff, and in the 18-23 pick range again. That's not a good place to be in with a QB who is currently 33. -

What do you disagree on, in all seriousness. That Denver is better than us defensive? Those other teams being as good or better, even with worse records than us? We had a better record than the Packers, the raiders, and Cardinals. same record as the Seahawks, Ravens, and chargers You can't honestly say that, when healthy, we are better than any of those teams -

I wouldn't say we are drama, i was stating that cousin's preference is drama free. I think MCD is big on removing that, but in the last few years we've been a circus between marrone drama, dareus, Tyrod's constant uncertainty, the Ryan brothers circus... We are looking to be drama free now, but as I said, recent history and perception isn't "drama free" even with mcd at the helm, but it's on it's way there Yes we made the playoffs, we got in on a hail mary by the Bengals. Denver has a much better defense and wr core, as well as 2 recent Superbowl trips, and the #5 pick in the draft. If I'm Kirk, I'm going to Denver over Buffalo. -

You asked why somebody would do that I was agreeing with you that they wouldn't That the guy saying they would make that trade (tyrod for Smith) had zero reasoning behind it other than just making it up and didn't look into any reasoning behind it I should have quoted him too -

Because people like to make up predictions without any factual basis. First, elway (2), Eli (2), and Peyton (2) all won in the last 20 years, add Steve young (1) and aikman (3) if you babe it 22 (let's make it 25, rounder number and includes all 3 if aikmans wins, and to to give a better range less skewed by Brady) So that's 10 of 25 won by 5 guys, another 5 by Brady alone. A better number is #1 picks who started QB in super bowl (win or lose) because, frankly, that's a better number in my eyes, that just who won (since Brady has started 7 and won 5 not counting what happens this year) Aikman 3 Young 1 Bledsoe 1 Elway 2 Peyton 4 Eli 2 Cam Newton 1 Matt Ryan 1 Expanding to top 5 also adds: Steve McNair (1) #3 overall Kerry Collins (1) #5 overall Donovan McNabb (1) #2 overall (I can throw in Trent dilfer who was #6 overall, he also won) So in the last 25 years, there have been 50 starts, two guys each game, we've 8 guys #1 overall start a Superbowl, 15 times between them, 12 guys and 17 total starts of the 50 if you expand to top5 plus dilfer@6 So 17 out of 50 Superbowl starters were top5, 15 were #1 overall. I'm just saying. Top picks are a crapshoot always, but 1/3 the starters were top5 -

Did you consider Eli an elite prospect? Other than Rosen throwing a little more often, their stats are pretty similar in college. -

Dever had the #1 defense for total yards given up They were basically #2 in every measurable defensive statistic other than PPG, which is mostly attributed to the fact that they had the second most offensive giveaways in the league, and their abysmal offense giving the opponents the ball back all game in good position. We were middle of the road defensively overall. Denver is a better team than us, with a worse QB situation. Give us cousins, we are a playoff team no doubt. Give Denver cousins they are probably #2 or #3 (with NE and Pitt) in the AFC, and top 5 in the league as Superbowl contenders. Sorry to burst your bubble, but one decent season with McDermott at the helm doesn't change the perception of two decades worth of ineptitude overnight. We are an inferior team to Denver I'm not sure what your are smoking to think otherwise, but I'd love to have some. We had a better record than the Packers, the raiders, and Cardinals. same record as the Seahawks, Ravens, and chargers. I would say they are all better than us. Record doesn't always mean a team is better. Injuries and schedule are factors that affect a team's record. -

How are they they "same type of personality" Denver is the frontrunner. Then there is everyone else. Cousins wants a team without drama, who are ready to win. Denver is ready to win. -

What is your criteria for elite then? I'm not quite sure what else they would have to do. Both of them are elite prospects with probowl , franchise QB potential. What more do you want? -

Stop it. Cousins is not signing in Buffalo. Like 0% chance. Complete fantasy. Not even sure why this continues to be a thing. -

Have to pay a premium price to play. But to play you have to pay, can't join a hand of poker without posting the blind, right? Maybe there's a guy the decide they love, and want to ante up, so I say go for it. I'm tired of watching other teams win on a roll of the dice (yes, plenty lose too) while we sit around and don't even enter the game, and instead hope somebody drops that winning lottery ticket in the 4th or 5th round. I've been watching the Bills since I was 5 years old. That's 1988. We have drafted the following QBs in my lifetime: 1983 1 (14th) the immortal James Edward Kelly 1985 3 (57th) Frank f*cking Reich 1986 12 (313) Bruce McClure 1995 2 (45) Todd Collins 2004 1 (22) JP Losman *I just threw up in my mouth* 2007 3 (92) Trent Edwards 2010 7 (209) Levi Brown 2013 1 (16) EJ Manuel 2016 4 (139) Cardale Jones 2017 5 (171) Nasty Nate Peterman That entire list makes me want to cry. Even when we draft a QB they suck. I might just go drink myself to sleep. -
We didn't even give up anything to get EJ. We actually traded back that year, and got extra picks. It was a weak draft that many teams whiffed on players, including a bunch if trash taken between our original #8 and the spot we took EJ. Nobody mortgaged the future for EJ. Losman the only pick that mattered was #20 the following year. We COULD have drafted Rodgers. We also COULD have whiffed and drafted Jason Campbell, or any other one of the trash taken around them. Giving up 3 first rnd and other picks this year though is a "mortgage the future" move. If it whiffs, we are left without a QB, and without other possible young talent. If it hits a home run, it's worth every penny. If they evaluate a guy they really want, go for it. If it misses then it misses. If one of the QBs becomes elite, we will be upset too though, especially if they go to the Jets.

You quoted one line from Manning. There was a ton about him, including: "One question that some NFL scouts have is the question “will he get any better?” At times he gives the appearance of being a self-made player, and sometimes those types of players don’t always go on to great NFL careers. In Manning’s case, he may be a solid and productive NFL QB, but he may not have Hall of Fame type skills" Guess what they are saying about Rosen? "Rosen is far superior [than Darnold] going through his progressions and has a pretty deep ball. He's a better QB right now, but that doesn't mean he will be down the line." Rosen and darnold are both elite prospects. Rosen is the most polished and NFL ready. Darnold looks to have higher potential upside. I have yet to find and credible source doesn't think so least one of them is elite. I'm sure the scouts for NFL teams are better at this than we are. I'll trust the pros.
