Why Taylor can't be the QB longterm---perfect example today
xxxxxxxx replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This year the ceiling is probably 10 wins and a wild card loss, or a wild card win and a subsequent drubbing at the hands of New England. Obviously, the coaching staff and the organization feel the same way. I actually think that there will be a window where a team can compete for a championship with Taylor in the future, but I don't think that team will be Buffalo, given how he has been treated. O-lines are going to crap, fewer and fewer franchise QB's are available, a franchise QB takes up a lot of cap space, and secondaries are getting stronger as more elite athletes choose to play CB. In the near future, a team will likely win a Superbowl with average to above average QB play, and Taylor could easily be that QB. -
Why Taylor can't be the QB longterm---perfect example today

In your initial post you said, in reference to Tyrod's problem with ball placement on completions, that details like this is what win and lose you games many times in the NFL. The problem is that your framing a matter of opinion as a fact, and the opinion is debatable and not shared by all. Sam Bradford has great, if not wonderful ball placement, but all of his pretty throws haven't necessarily translated into more wins when compared to Tyrod. Tyrod has ball placement issues on short and intermediate throws, I've watched him just as much as you have, so I know this as well. The problem with your analysis is that his deep ball is fairly accurate, his placement issues rarely result in interceptions, and he often turns plays that would, in the case of a QB like Bradford with exceptional ball placement skills, result in a sack (and a potential injury). I am going to assume that you would rather have Bradford under center than Tyrod, and that's fine, your entitled to your opinion. But in my opinion your failing to recognize a lot of intangibles that Tyrod has which have led to a lot of wins, and the amount of ways that one can win a football game, so I don't think that your assessment is fair. -

There is zero proof that better ball placement in the situation that you are referring to will often result in the difference between a win and a loss. And your analysis fails to consider how his running ability positively impacts the teams ability to win games. Essentially, you are just rehashing the same old impartial critique that is commonly made with regard to Taylor's play, offering little in terms of insight and analysis. -
Its the clashing of philosophies. The bills have gone from 4/3 to 3/4 to 4/3 to 3/4 to 4/3 on defense. brought in GM's who wanted to avoid low character guys (Leavy and Nix), a GM who targeted guys who he believed were undervalued because of Character issues (Whaley), back to a GM who wants to avoid low character guys again. replaced washed up coaches with inexperienced coaches, and inexperienced coaches with washed up coaches over-drafted and under-drafted positions traded, cut, or refused to sigh players that are still reliable starters in the league If personnel like Wade Phillips, Marshawn Lynch, and Jason Peters were still with this team today, we might have made the playoffs at least once. Probably not a Superbowl, but at least the post-season

The reality is that Peterman was and still is projected to develop into a backup. He was a highly touted high school recruit that didn't play well enough to hold onto a starting job at Tennessee. He beat Clemson at Pit, but only went 8-5 on the year. I wouldn't expect him to develop into an everyday starter, let alone a franchise QB, nor would I compare him to the names on that list. If he can remain employed in the NFL beyond his rookie contract, he's done well. And if he can develop into a Kyle Orton, Chad Henne, Matt Moore type of QB he will have succeeded. Its actually safe to assume that his stat line will never eclipse Tyrod's. If you like the kid, I would temper my expectations, and avoid over-evaluating his play.

Bills clueless about Tyrod Taylor article

Aaron Rodgers 1-36 when trailing by 1 point to a team with a winning record in the 4th quarter. When Green Bay needs to pass he can't. That's all it comes down too. Unless the Green Bay D is playing lights out every game Green Bay looses. It really doesn't matter how close you are at the end of the game if you still can't win. Its about making changes and finding something that consistently gets you W's. Rodgers isn't that guy and he isn't changing, he is who he is. Peterman definitely didn't look like that guy on Sunday but I wouldn't judge that guy off one bad game. Especially his first. Makes Sense! Let's offer Peterman to Green Bay for Rodgers Straight up. -

Absolutely. They have said as much. Reminds my of the cockiness that McDaniels displayed when he took over Denver, and the tire fire that resulted. People complain about passing yards and missed throws, but he more than over compensates for that by protecting the ball, running effectively, and escaping trouble. Clearly, they don't care about the later--and would prefer a guy who hangs in the pocket and tries to make throws. He's not outside their box because they don't like black people , he's outside their box because black quarterbacks who excel at running don't always get credit for how their ability to run helps a team. This is a subtle distinction that most people miss, disregard, or refuse to acknowledge because they think Sean is such a nice guy, and couldn't possibly be racist. But its not an issue of him being a racist, at all, its the metrics that he is using, and the broader history that informs them. -

The only reasonable explanation that I can muster behind the decision is that they don't think they can beat New England until Bill and Tom retire, and they feel that the QB position is overvalued from a cap perspective. More likely than not, Mcdermott and Beane feel that a fair market contract for an average QB will take up too much cap space so they want someone younger and cheaper. They would rather win the division in 2-3 years than be one and done in the playoffs because doing so would offer both of them more job security. -

I don't care to discuss this issue with you any more, or any other football issue for that matter. Your comments aren't being made in good faith, and your trolling of a fellow fan demonstrates a major lack in social grace. You clearly don't understand that racism can exist systemically and discursively as opposed to being something that someone identifies as, and given that you have expressed no interest in reading up on the topic I have no interest in debating it with you. -

I never said that Peterman should be written off, nor did Dom. And the point is not that Taylor deserves more time to develop: its that he has clearly developed into an average QB and thus deserves the respect from the coaching staff that the rest of the average QB's in the NFL get, which are plays drawn up to accentuate his strengths. The entire team deserves to be put into the best possible position to succeed, for that matter, including Peterman. Dude wasn't announced as the starter until Tuesday, so he didn't even have a full week to prepare for hist 1st NFL start. And the idea that a rookie should be developed when an average starter is already on the roster and the team is in playoff contention is what rubs most people the wrong way about this whole deal. -

Its nuanced, not contradictory. Its the contradictory assessments of Taylor's play that Dom is taking issue with. Consider the following quote from Andy Benoit, which is a common critique of Taylor's play echoed by folk on this board and members of the Buffalo media. According to Benoit, Stats can never measure throws that are open but not attempted. Tyrod has too many of those for an offense to be consistent. This statement makes no sense because its impossible to have too many of something that can't be counted. And it is rarely, if ever made about white quarterbacks with similar game tape. His point is that alot of stupid things get said about quarterbacks based on what they look like on the field, as opposed to the results that they get on the field. Sean's talk about how gutsy and resilient Peterman is falls into a similar category, in that it makes no sense. He's didn't praise Tyrod for being gutsy (or resilient), as far as I can tell, for coming off the bench and running for a TD (which is, like, the definition of being resilient, if resiliency is understood as an ability to withstand or recover from difficult conditions). Referring to Petterman as being resiliant without extending the same compliment to Taylor is ridiculous in the eyes of many, as there is evidence to support usage of that term with regard to Taylor's play, and none to support it in regard to Petterman's play ( or did you not see him completely melt down). -
There is long history of coaches, organizations, and fans foolishly downplaying the accomplishments of black athletes (especially quarterbacks) in the US, and inflating the accomplishments of White athletes who are far less talented. If you are unaware of this history, you should probably look at the career of Warren Moon. A lot of those people, including myself, see the Tyrod benching along those lines. Why; lots of white QBs have played worse over stretches than Taylor has this year, and they did not lose their jobs to a 5th round rookie who proceeded to set an interception record. Take all the offense that you want to from the comparison, and to be clear (I am not calling you a racist). But this decision made the team look bad plain and simple, and if you think that all the negative press is bizarre, than you are, more likely than not, purposefully ignoring an uncomfortable history.

McDermott put all his hopes on a young QB that wasn't well supported, and may have ruined that QB's development as a result. So we can look forward to Peterman having 0 confidence going forward, Tyrod wanting to skip town, and an potentially high first round QB pick wasted on a QB who, whether they are good or not, will be groomed by a former defensive coordinator with a bad defense that clearly doesn't know how to develop or evaluate a QB. How's that for analysis.
-
He made the decision to start an unproven rookie QB that was drafted in the 5th round when his team was in playoff contention against one of the more talented defensive lines in the league when his franchise left tackle was out with an injury. In doing so he probably lost the respect of the locker room, and most certainly lost the respect of most of the league. If he wanted to roll the dice on Peterman, maybe, just maybe, he should have waited until he was at home with a functioning line, cause he may have just ruined this kid. No wait its a media conspiracy. FAKE NEWS. FAKE NEWS.

And we have a record. 5 picks in a half Its more than clear that Tyrod wasn't the problem. The sad thing is that Peterman is potentially ruined too. Like, did no one think that starting a 5th round QB with no starting left tackle was a good idea. -

Yes white QB's aren't overvaluated (on occasion) and thought to be more intelligent than Black QB's. I"m doubt Peterman is still in after setting a record for interceptions in a quarter and a half if he wasn't white. -

xxxxxxxx replied to racecitybills's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Tyrod has one of the higher completion percentages on deep balls in the league: its one of the few areas where he is up their with the elite quarterbacks (and why a lot of analysts feel that he is underrated). Or were you not watching all his pretty bombs to Sammy, Clay, ect. If a guy is open deep, and he sees it, he's one of the best. Peterman is more of a short/intermediate dink and dunk get the ball out fast style thrower. While I'm not accusing you of being racist, alot of people feel that black quarterbacks who can run don't get enough credit for their ability to throw down the field because people assume that they can't. Dude throws the ball down the field to the outside well, but he doesn't hit short or intermediate throws nearly as often. So if you think Peterman will hit more deep balls, your sadly mistaken. -
Cordy Glenn injured AGAIN.
xxxxxxxx replied to Pine Barrens Mafia's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There isn't a single left tackle in the NFL with weak glutes, especially when compared to your average non-athlete. He has ankle problems because he weighs in the 350 pound range and shuffles abnormally fast for a man of his size. Dealing with his injury is tricky because he can't just take 300 plus pounds off of his ankle if he wants to walk and move around. Dude is, more likely than not, battling through intense pain every day. Pain that few men could deal with, so to refer to him as being weak is both ignorant and stupid. -

Filling a web page with a series of links that aren't accessible to the majority of its traffic is poor design, plane and simple. Fans who don't live in Buffalo aren't going to subscribe to its local newspaper, so if they are going to pay wall links, they should be removed. There is plenty of bills pay-walled content that is not linked, so I can't see how this board can justify posting some pay walled links and not others. I'm also not subscribing to Buffalo news because I don't live in Buffalo, and they continue to employ an old angry white man who likes to sprinkle his articles with more than a tinge of racism. -
Dominant pass rushers who can also defend the run and make an immediate impact rarely, if ever, fall into the bottom half of the first round --one went first overall last draft. And finding reliable starters with cap friendly contracts in the bottom half of the 1st round is what smart drafting is all about. Box score scouting get teams into trouble, especially when it comes to pass rushers, like when the bills took Aaron Maybin over Brian Orakpo because he had a higher sack numbers in his last year of college. By being able to set the edge Lawson can play all three downs, and still provide some pass rush. Not bad at all for a 19th pick.
