Here's some articles for those who are confused about what a gulag is. The North Korean gulags are a direct decendant of Stalin's. Death, terror in N. Korea gulag Former Guard: Ahn Myong Chol A Survivor: Soon Ok Lee Child prisoner: Kang Chol Hwan The Hidden Gulag: Exposing North Korea’s Prison Camps; Prisoners’ Testimonies and Satellite Photographs I could find plenty of more sources, but I can only stand so much. Questioning the methods and manner of Gitmo detention is a legitimate discussion to have. Comparing it to a Nazi concentration camp or a gulag identifies the source as an imbecile.

No. But exercising your right to free speech in such a manner in my presence will have consequences. -
Very encouraging reading on cancer.org on this: Extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphomas - mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphomas: ... Usually it is confined to the area where it began and is not widespread ... It is a slow growing lymphoma and is often curable in its early stages. You have good reason to be optimistic about this. Keep your spirits up, and best of luck to you.

Holy crap you guys, it's a serpentine belt, not a flux capacitor. I bought a cross-cut one a couple weeks ago for about $25 - it takes one wrench and about 10 minutes to swap it out.

Stop me before I shop again!!
Terry Tate replied to Gavin in Va Beach's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
There's a difference between irresponsibility and mental illness. Seems to me to be a case of the latter, but everyone else here seems to have determined she was of sound mind and lacking in self discipline. I pray no one who posted these types of thoughts ever has a loved one who battles a mental illness, like depression, that drives them to alternate paths to escape. It is all-consuming, and lays waste to many otherwise strong families. -

I don't know this woman personally, but I do know depression can lead a person to some seriously bad mistakes (such as substance addictions or gambling). They are escape mechanisms. They don't get a thrill off getting high, or winning a big jackpot - they don't actually enjoy it, they're just escaping the real world and the pain it has caused to send them into depression. As long as the person is getting high, or gambling, or shopping (I guess), they are not thinking about the depression - they're escaping it. And every moment of every day they will pursue whatever means they can to escape. This lady had a lot of means at her disposal - what she needed was a loved one to get her to a psychiatrist. Depression is a serious mental condition that requires a psychiatrist to diagnose and treat. Once a patient understands the cause of their depression and begins to deal with it, many can recover quite nicely. Left alone, they often become suicides after the ability to escape has become unavailable to them (the money and credit is all gone). EDIT: I would also like to acknowledge that I am in disagreement with the psychologist quoted in the story, who believes it is an issue of "survival guilt", and survivors are saying, 'I might as well blow everything I have. I could be the next one to go." I would rather hear a psychiatrist's opinion on the subject. -
The Supreme Court refused to hear the case of Jose Padilla, specifically whether American citizens arrested on U.S. soil can be designated "enemy combatants" and held without trial. fox news thingy

That's funny, because I didn't. I only began supporting him after he was elected. Strange how that worked out, huh?

I'm still coming across some interesting articles on this subject. Among them, a story linked by the Marijuana Policy Project (guess what they are in favor of) of a Dallas Morning News story of Oct 20, 1999 - Bush Backs States' Rights on Marijuana. Though he opposed medical marijuana use, he supported states' right to make their own decision (which is exactly what Justice O'Conner just said in her dissent). Yet, when elected, President Bush had AG Ashcroft prosecute the war on drugs, which this latest Supreme Court case is a result of. On the other hand, he nominated Janice Rogers Brown, who is definitely in favor of limited government, to a post that's often a stepping stone to the Supreme Court. It's going to be interesting to see how the next couple SC vacancies get filled. It will certainly be easy to tell who's in favor of limited government, and who is not.

If you haven't already read about it, you may appreciate the story of Ben Comen. He attended the same HS "Radio" did, TL Hanna High - there must be something special in the water over there: SI's Rick Reilly's take From SC's The State TL Hanna High's xcountry page on Ben Meeting the President An interview Ben encourages another handicapped kid to try out.

Probably not too many prosecutions of that. I avoided the whole thing as a HS teen by dating a college girl. Within that group, however, are also guys in their early 20's hitting young teen girls - which if it were to involve my daughter - well, they would be lucky to get a prison sentence just to avoid me. So there's different levels even within this group. I'm with you on that. The exceptions should not drive the rule. Considered, and attempted to allow for when possible, but not to the extent of being the focus.

I'll worry about my spelling as soon as you figure out someone remapped your keyboard's "." with a "?".

In the grand scheme of things, maybe it's better more people don't vote. From a poll of 1000 adults nationwide by the Polling Company. CLOSED-ENDED QUESTION 2. And, please tell me which of the following is the most accurate description of a "filibuster?" (READ AND ROTATE LIST, ACCEPT ONLY ONE RESPONSE) 68% A LEGISLATIVE PROCEDURE 4% A MEDICAL PROCEDURE 2% A HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCE 2% A SPORTS TERM 1% A BREED OF HORSE 1% A TYPE OF SANDWICH * OTHER (VOLUNTEERED) * Some kind of equipment * Someone who knocks you out. * It’s a good thing * The Congressman 21% DO NOT KNOW/NO RESPONSE (VOLUNTEERED) I'll have a fillibuster with provolone, lettuce, tomato, and banana peppers, please.

As I used to tell some of the younger airmen "Next time you get ready to shave, take one step closer to the razor". Hurricanes, phhtt. I bought a concrete block/brick house, got a BBQ grill and a generator with which I know how to safely backfeed power into my house. Arlene can KMA.

Alaska Darin? Well, it's a long story. One hundred thousand years ago, Alaska Darin was out hunting on the frozen wastes when he slipped and fell into a crevasse. In 1988, he was discovered by some scientists and thawed out. He then served a tour in the USAF and became.. Unfrozen Caveman TBD Poster. Jingle: "He used to be a caveman, but now he's a Poster. Unfrozen Caveman Poster!" Announcer: Brought to you by.. Gas Plus - actually gives you gas, for those times when you feel like being the joker; and by National Escort Services - if we don't get a prostitute to your door in 15 minutes, you don't pay; and by Happy Fun Ball - still legal in 16 states - it's legal, it's fun, it's Happy Fun Ball! And now, tonight's episode of "Unfrozen Caveman Poster". Alaska Darin: Ladies and gentlemen, I'm just a caveman. I fell on some ice and later got thawed out by some of your scientists. Your world frightens and confuses me! Sometimes when I get a message on my fax machine, I wonder: "Did little demons get inside and type it?" I don't know! My primitive mind can't grasp these concepts. But there is one thing I do know - we must do everything in our power to lower the Capitol Gains Tax. Thank you! <and thank you, Phil Hartman for all the laughs.>

Hopefully the correct diagnosis will help her keep her spirits up while she undergoes treatment. Involving her in planning a reward at the end of it might help. Best wishes. -

Sit down with her and read #89 and Alaska Darin's posts in this thread. That should get you off to a pretty good start. -
(Sigh...) More Hillary Comments...
Terry Tate replied to Ghost of BiB's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Hillary, phtt. Executive experience, Dems. Nominate a governor. P.S. You too, Republicans. Just say no to legislators. -
Not a lot of details in the story. Sure the Dems aren't just trying to keep teenagers convicted of statutory rape of their teenage girlfriends off the list? Just trying to be fair - I don't know the answer. I can't imagine any other acceptable exceptions off the top of my head. If it's an attempt to protect civil liberties of convicted child molesters, that's one thing, but I wouldn't want the hypothetical teen thrown into the same boat, either.

Katherine Harris to run for U.S. Senate
Terry Tate replied to erynthered's topic in Politics, Polls, and Pundits
Surprising how many people know Mrs Harris on this board. You guys all meet her at a BBQ or something? -
BTW, does Clarence Thomas get any credit for being against this opinion?

I thought I was going to body-surf on the North Shore with some friends, until I saw the size of the waves, and the way people were getting slammed into the beach. "Pacific", my butt! Snorkling at Hanauma Bay was one of the neatest things ever. It's a huge tropical fish tank. Lots of good advice here, depending on what you prefer. The only bad time possible is if you think you're immune to sunburn. Get the spf that you squeeze the bottle and a sweater comes out.
