I suppose you can paint this as NFL players not being bright, but, that's really not true. They are actually smart enough to realize that their careers are much shorter on average than baseball or basketball. The last time I looked the average career is about 3.3 years. NFL owners know this and they do not believe that an NFL player would be willing to lose 1/3 of their career earnings by striking for an entire season. Owners can simply wait them out. The next negotiation will be a doozy and the union and their head will give it a good run.

I do think that is the crux of the issue. Many people who have no idea, could have no idea because they don't fall outside the "norm" feel that they know.
