I'm Surprised by Zay Jones' Slow Start
jrober38 replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Catchable at the NFL level is anything that hits you in the hands. I recall the first three targets he had on Sunday all being catchable passes. He had to fight for the ball, but that's life in the NFL. You need to out muscle DBs and secure passes when you're covered, and he's simply not doing that. 7 catches on 32 attempts for 87 yards is as bad as it gets. He has no business being on the field right now. -
Every receiver in the NFL has the physical tools. Unfortunately only a small fraction of them ever become good players. Jones looks slow, doesn't create separation and has yet to show he can catch a contested pass. He was brutally outplayed by Deonte Thompson yesterday (a guy who couldn't stay on the roster in Chicago). Jones looks terrible right now. He needs to sit on the bench for a while.

Exactly. We need to look at what our QB does well. Does he use the middle of the field? No. This makes Jordan Matthews useless. Jones is useless because he can't catch. Does he throw a great deep ball? Yup. This makes Martavis Bryant appealing. Deonte Thompson has speed and he showed instant chemistry with Taylor. Trade a 7th round pick and a conditional 2019 (if we re sign him), and bring Bryant in to stretch the field and help in the red zone. Jones and Matthews aren't getting the job done. Time to find an upgrade to pair with Thompson who obviously works well with Taylor (because he has speed and can actually run deep).

Zay Jones has 7 catches on 32 targets (21.8%) for 87 yards (2.7 YPA). We need to stop throwing this guy the ball. He shouldn't even be on the field.

For a 7th round pick I don't care about any of that. Jones and Matthews aren't anywhere near good enough. They're possession receivers who can't get separation on any route more than 10 yards. Even when Jones gets a step he can't catch the ball. Bryant is an elite deep threat. 6'5 with 4.4 speed and decent hands. Taylor's best at throwing the ball down the field. Deonte Thompson has 4.3 speed and can actually get vertical and Taylor managed to produce 100+ yards when he targeted him. Bryant would do the same. This offense is built to run the ball and throw off play action. Our problem up until yesterday was that when we run play action our receivers can't separate because they don't have speed. That would change is Bryant and Thompson were our wideouts on the outside. We'd be able to push the ball vertically and rip off chunk pass plays like we did two years ago.

If we can get Bryant for a late pick I'd do it. The Bills are 4-2 and legitimately looking like they could make the playoffs in what's been a down year for the entire NFL. Zay Jones is terrible, Jordan Matthews offers next to nothing, and the most explosive WR we've seen all year was a guy we just signed off the street. Bryant has real size and speed and he can stretch the field. He's not producing in Pittsburgh, but he'd give us a boost with his skill set. With Clay still on the shelf if we can upgrade the WR spot for a 6th or 7th round pick, I think we should. Taylor is very good at pushing the ball vertically down the field, which is what Bryant does best. Would love to see Bryant and Thompson on the outside with Matthews in the slot and Jones sitting on the bench.

SAL M: Bills WRs have no business being starters.

Zay looks awful. He looks so slow out there and he can't get open. -

Well, then I guess it's a good thing I don't post here very often. -
Worst WR corps ever? + collateral damage to DropZone Jones

Yeah, but who you have at WR doesn't matter. LMAO -

Taylor is a low end starter on an offense devoid of pass catching talent. Those things combined are a really bad combination for our offense. Jones has looked awful. He doesn't belong on the field. He doesn't look like he should have been anything more than an UDFA. -

Our offense is bad because it has bad players. Below average at QB, bottom of the barrel at WR, below average along the OL. It amazes me that week after week people want to whine and moan about the offense when on paper they hardly feature any talent whatsoever aside from Lesean McCoy who is the only guy on the field the opposing defense has to worry about stopping. What the heck were people expecting when you don't have a great QB, feature zero play makers at WR and have a bunch of liabilities along the OL??? I don't get it. This offense is going to look completely different in 2 years. I thought it was obvious they're completely rebuilding that side of the ball. -

LOL Good one. Hard to put up 100 yards when you drop more passes than you catch... -

Some people do. I'll go out on a limb and say you're not one of them. -

A lot of people thought this receiving group would be solid this season. Numerous people predicted very solid number from Zay Jones in particular. They said he'd easily replace Robert Woods production from last season and that Matthews would replace Sammy. Those people were a little off base. -

Zay doesn't belong on an NFL field right now. He's been the worst player on this team through 5 weeks. -

All 22 is the dumbest thing. Pretending an aerial view where you can see all of the pass catchers at once, with no context of the play or progressions, is a meaningful way to "evaluate" what's happening on the field is hilarious. -

There were several drops today. Jones dropped 2. I recall Tate dropping one that would have put us in field goal range on a 3rd and very long. I'm sure there were others. Our wide receivers are the worst in the league. It's unbelievable how bad they are. -
Last I checked we have no one to throw to and everyone we play just keys on taking away McCoy. All we see are 8 man fronts keyed on stopping McCoy because we don't have a single pass catcher on the roster who can threaten a defense on a route more than 10 yards down field.

I'm fairly certain it's going to show that no one was open throughout the day. When you're featuring practice squad receivers against the veteran Bengal secondary, it's going to be pretty tough to throw the ball down the field. The Bills have far and away the worst WR corps in the NFL. We're completely devoid of talent at WR. -

Maybe there's someone stupid out there willing to take Dareus off our hands in exchange for a pass catcher. -

I agree. This is as bad as I've ever seen. We have a bunch of practice squad guys who can't get open against man coverage. Taylor has no where to throw the ball without Clay and Matthews on the field. -

AJ Green is one of the 5-6 best receivers in the NFL. Zay Jones has yet to justify being drafted. He looks like a UDFA who should be on the PS. -

Our WRs can't separate. Linebackers get to play downhill against our run game knowing our WRs aren't a threat to do anything on the outside. This offense desperately needs an NFL caliber WR. Right now we don't have one who belongs on the field. -

Jones looks awful. He doesn't look like he belongs on the field at this point. So much for him easily replacing Robert Woods' production. -

Our Wide Receivers are utterly horrendous. Zay Jones doesn't look like he should have been drafted. He's slow, can't separate, and doesn't appear to be able to catch the football when it is thrown his way. Holmes is a fringe NFL player. No one else belongs on the field when we're on offense. The Bills have no one to throw to. No one who can get open.
