NFL Combine - Measurements, Times, and Other News
jrober38 replied to thebandit27's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Totally agree. The combine is mostly useless aside from predicting who will make good linebackers and defensive linemen. Bryan's athleticism suggests he's going to make a really good pro player. -
Going back to its inception in 2004, the following QBs have posted a College Total QBR of 90 or higher: Pat White (almost entirely for his running ability) Sam Bradford Andrew Luck Cam Newton Russell Wilson Johnny Manziel Jameis Winston Marcus Mariota Baker Mayfield (the only player to do it twice) With the obvious exceptions, that seems like pretty good company to keep, and is a pretty solid predictor of NFL success considering that 6 of the 8 guys who have done it have made pretty good NFL QBs.

Calling him an effort player sells him short. The guy is a freak of nature, much like JJ Watt was. His effort and motor will prove to be a bonus in the grand scheme of things. Give him some NFL calibre coaching, and let him learn with Kyle Williams for a year (assuming we bring him back on a one year deal) and in a couple years Bryan could be an All Pro DT. -

Taven Bryan is a freak athlete. He's the same type of athlete as JJ Watt. If we can get him at the end of round 1 I think we'd be getting a steal who could be a real difference maker in a year or two. -
Which Top Draft Prospects Fit McDermott's Model Best
jrober38 replied to PolishDave's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think Taven Bryan is a fit. He's freakishly athletic, has really good size, and comes from a family with a military background. Bryan's athleticism is almost as good as JJ Watt's (which is insane). If we can snag him at the end of round 1 I'll be thrilled. -
I'd prefer Taven Bryan. The guy's athleticism is off the charts and his upside is enormous. I think McDermott would like his background as well.

Agree about Falk. That system doesn't produce NFL QBs and his tools aren't great. I think some systems will like Jackson more than expected after watching what Desean Jackson did last year. I think the top 4 are locks for the top 15 and think they all wind up top 10. The rest of the guys simply aren't very good. Will be interesting to see what happens. I think we'll try to trade up for whichever QB falls to around 10th overall.

I think it's extremely unlikely. 7 QBs have never been picked in the first two rounds in the history of the NFL draft. White might rise, and his elite arm and size might push him up past Rudolph and Falk who seem to be considered tier 2 right now. I think those guys, and the rest are going to go a lot lower than expected. I've got a hunch that Rudolph is going to go a lot lower than people expect and wind up in round 4. Rudolph's tools are mediocre across the board. I think he's comparable to guys like Landry Jones and Bryce Petty who have done nothing in the NFL. White seems to compare pretty heavily to Zach Mettenberger. Big in stature, very limited mobility, big arm, etc. My concern is Zach quickly fell out of the league.

When it's all said and done, I expect: Rosen, Darnold, Mayfield and Allen - top 10 picks in no particular order Jackson - 1st round pick Rudolph, Falk - late 2nd/3rd round picks White - 3rd-4th round Lauletta, Ferguson, Benkert - 4th-7th round picks The Rest - UDFAs My thinking; roughly 7 NFL teams need a QB, and there are 5 guys who will go in round 1. With Cousins, Keenum, Bridgewater, Bradford and possibly Foles available, the rest of the teams who need a QB will be able to find someone half decent in FA, which isn't the case most years. The result is that the 2nd/3rd tier guys are going to get picked later than expected.

Definitely. He's a Cover 2 corner who will excel in a scheme that uses a lot of zone which allows him to keep his eyes in the backfield. I don't put much stock in any of the combine. I think it's a good way to test athleticism, and can be particularly effective in projecting the success of pass rushers, but the drills are pretty much useless in my eyes. For example, Harold Landry is almost certainly going to make an elite 3-4 outside linebacker. His test scores are outstanding, and in 2-3 years I'll bet he's posting 10+ sacks. -
No one ever questioned Stafford or Cutler's accuracy. Farve played in college 26 years ago. Guys like Allen, whose scouting reports openly question his accuracy, never work in the NFL. You don't go from being an inaccurate QB in the Mountain West Conference to an accurate one in the NFL. It simply doesn't happen. Whoever drafts Allen will get fired in 1-2 years. His accuracy and lack of feel for the game will not result in him being a successful NFL QB. He's the exact same prospect as EJ Manuel or Jake Locker. That's what you're drafting.

NFL.com. CBS Sports. 3 plays? One of which is an example of him not reading the field properly?
-
Josh Allen is a terrible football player. He shouldn't get picked before the 4th round. Guys like him have no history of success in the NFL over the past 20 years.

What do you not like? -
Mike Mayock has never proven to be a capable QB Scout. Every year he falls in love with the guys who win the underwear Olympics and almost every time those guys bust. White's scouting reports tell a different story.
-
White is not worth a 2nd round pick. Tall and big arm doesn't mean he can play football. White has tools, but they don't translate well to the NFL game. He doesn't read the field quickly, has poor pocket awareness and doesn't handle pressure very well. He's a guy you stash on the bench for a couple years hoping for the best, but he's not a 2nd round pick. Not even close.

Sure. I'm just pointing out that none of that was on display today. If you asked someone with reasonable football knowledge, who had never heard Josh Rosen's name before if he did well today, they'd agree. The only way you'd think he looked "arrogant" is if you're convinced he is arrogant based on things you've read and heard. -

I think you're seeing what you want to see. I'm not a huge Rosen fan, but his performance was pretty solid today. He and Mayfield were the only future NFL QBs in Group 2 by a pretty wide margin. Both guys looked good. -

This is the underwear olympics. The whole thing is set up for guys like Allen (and EJ Manuel, and Jake Locker, and Blaine Gabbert) to look good. Physical specimens like them always generate the buzz at the combine. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean he (or any of the others) can actually play football well. -

That was expected though. All you need to do is read a scouting report to know that guys like Rosen and Mayfield are really good passers who have good arms with very good accuracy. On the flip side, some of these guys have no business being on the field. The NFL has no business inviting 21 QBs to the combine. Half these guys aren't getting drafted because they have no arm, terrible mechanics and poor accuracy. -

Fair enough. Generally speaking it's the athletic traits that make a guy move up or down boards at this time of year. Scouts fall in love with work out warriors (Allen, EJ Manuel, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert, Jamarcus Russell) and ignore crappy game tape because their egos are so inflated they think they can turn a guy with no accuracy into the next Drew Brees with their special coaching sauce. On the flip side, guys with eye popping stats but mediocre tools (Rudolph), generally fade during the process. These guys don't get anyone excited, and the result is that their upside is low because they can't throw the ball 80 yards, therefore they'll never be anything more than a backup QB. Either way, guys in both camps never go on to become good NFL starting QBs.
