  1. It's the first 10 years when you get sucked into the vortex. I've watched it evolve for my 2 boys over the past 10+ years. I remember being horrified when my youngest said he liked the Cowboys one year for no apparent reason. Chalked it up to the unis and/or Cowboys/Indians thing and fortunately it passed. Now I see its about the star power. Hasn't changed since I grew up on Long Island when the Jets and Giants had no star power and long story short: OJ and the fact that the Bills played in NY state made me a Bills fan...and so far my boys are all in too, With that said, 70's were the best but the most enjoyable was 88-96 when the Bills were great. Can't wait to enjoy the Super Bowl victory with my boys...it will happen!
  2. Well put. I haven't seen the footage either and don't pretend to know who was most at fault, nor do I care. It smells of a stupid booze-filled bar misunderstanding/disagreement/fight gone way too far that either the off-duty cops or the high-profile NFL star should have defused and/or walked away from.
  3. I'm 100% with you regarding the 2013 defense. The sacks blinded many to the fact that the run defense was non-existent. Wasn't that the year that L. Blount looked like a man among boys? (and no it wasn't just the return game...that just made it worse).
  4. If I was a Denver or Carolina fan it would've been 4 hours of pure torture with all of the turnovers and near turn-overs. But I'm not and I thought it was a very entertaining game from the beginning to (just about) the end. A lot of people point to last year and while the second half was great I though the first half was like watching paint dry.
  5. Maybe a little off topic since the threads been about the business side of football, but some great quotes about what football will be like in 10 years: http://www.newsday.com/sports/football/super-bowl/what-will-football-and-the-super-bowl-look-like-in-10-years-1.11419374
  6. Yeah, I thought this thread was going to be about the game. What I don't like about where the game is headed relates to the rule and officiating changes due to safety concerns. For example, no more kick-off returns and the QB's are treated like ballerinas. At what point do QB's where flags instead of being tackled? The concussion problem makes it difficult to argue against many of the changes, but I wonder where the game will be in 10 years.
  7. You sound like my wife No offense, couldn't resist, but I agree even that would be an improvement.
  8. Full disclosure: this topic is a result of a recurring conversation with my wife over the years that came up again at dinner tonight. Why is the Super Bowl on a Sunday night? The kids have school and we have work on Monday. Since there's a two week layoff its beyond me why its not played on Saturday night, but thats not my point. There's been talk about eliminating pre-season games and adding regular season games. That seems to have died down, but I always thought it was an opportunity to extend the season into February and play the Super Bowl the day before Presidents Day. Setting aside an extended regular season, how would you feel about starting the season a few weeks later and playing the SB the day before Presidents Day? For me, the season starts too early anyway (football is a cold weather sport) and it definitely ends too soon.
  9. The only time I can root for the Patriots is if they have nothing to play for and they are playing the Jets. The Pats-Jets playoff game in 2011 was sheer torture. A few years ago I picked the Patriots to win the SB in a post-season pool. I still rooted against them every step of the way.
  10. I could be wrong but I think it was a MNF game and obviously it wasn't well received since they haven't done it since. I watched and didn't care for it. My earliest recollection of announcer bashing goes back to Cosell/Meredith/Gifford. As a kid I used to look forward to Cosells overly dramatic MNF intros. Meredith was the clownish ex player and Gifford played it straight. My father couldn't stomach Cosell or Meredith but for me it worked. Present day I like Tirico. The color guys are all guaranteed to get on my nerves at some point so i take what they say with a grain of salt and pick out the pieces that make sense to me. And of course you can always go to a bar where you can't hear the announcers but can get aggravated by the know-nothing on the bar stool next to you.
  11. Coughlin reporting to Rex? No clue why Coughlin would find that appealing. Rex bringing in an established defensive coach to help him with his defense? His ego would never let him consider that. I can't think of a time that Rex has fired a coach or benched a player. Like it or not it's up to him and Thurman to turn it around on D.
  12. I despise this so much I can't bring myself to type it: #-#-#-#! ####! ####! ####!
  13. Reporter: Why do you take your wife with you for road games? Bum Phillips: Because she's too damn ugly to kiss goodbye.
  14. Strength of schedule is a losers lament. The schedule always looks tough for bad teams, not so much for good teams. We need to get on the right side of that coin and overcome the schedule, officiating, injuries and other things we can't control. Thats what good teams do.
  15. I'm new to the board, been following for a while, thanks for the insights, angst and commiseration. After another rough season maybe some humor is in order and this board rarely disappoints. So whats your favorite sports quote? I'll start with the following from former Tampa Bay Bucs coach John McKay: Reporter: Coach, what do you think of your teams execution? McKay: I'm all for it.
  16. I don't get wound up about the scheduling, every year there are quirks and a few teams gets slighted, sometimes badly. Lets just be happy that we're done with the self-imposed Toronto game. Not completely relevant, but this thread reminded me of a great quote: 1992 - Pat Williams, Orlando Magic general manager, on his team's 7-27 record: "We can't win at home. We can't win on the road. As general manager, I just can't figure out where else to play."
  17. Haha. According to my boys (9 and 12), he never shows any emotion. Can't remember the play (fortunately there were many) but they were shocked when they saw him get p*ssed off today.
  18. A lot was made of Sammy turning Revis around on that third down play to seal the deal on the Thursday night earlier this year. That was the week before the Texans game and looking back I wondered whether Revis was playing through his groin issue against us. Maybe, maybe not. No excuses for him today. With Clay/Woods/Harvin out and Salas (who?) in, Jets should have been able to eliminate Sammy. They chose Revis. They chose wrong.
  19. Can't say that I agree with the OP. What I didn't get was why the Pats chose to run out the clock with nearly 2 minutes left in the first half, two timeouts remaining and down 7.
  20. Nothing against Fitzpatrick, but he's a Jet and the only way I root for them is against the Pats. and even that is difficult (anyone know the death or boola-boola joke?) Lets end the Jets season. Losing would give us a marginally better draft pick but if our players don't want to crush a rival we have bigger issues than an improved draft slot. And yeah, we probably do have bigger issues. For all of Rex's faults, his Jets players would run through a wall for him, that hasn't happened in Buffalo. Check out quotes from Sheldon Richardson and Calvin Pace on Rex: http://nypost.com/2015/12/27/its-going-to-be-a-bloodbath-jets-rex-round-2-will-be-epic/ Bottom line for me is that knocking the Jets out of the playoffs would make this Sunday a better day.
  21. Born and bred on Long Island. Mets '86 and vague memories of '69. Islanders Stanley Cup run. My boys are growing up Bills/Mets/Islanders fans. Sometimes I wonder if this is a form of child abuse. Mets had an unexpected run this year and things are looking up for the Islanders. Really expected more from the Bills this year. These long droughts are torture but I'll never turn my back on my teams unless they leave town. Go Bills!
