I forgot about Strawberry's number retirement - turned on the game just before they unveiled the number. They mentioned his apology during the broadcast and I'd like to hear it. Ultimately in spite of 1986 I feel like Gooden and Strawberry could/should have given us more. And I have mixed emotions on the number retirements. In general I'd prefer if it was a more exclusive group.

@Gugny @Another Fan @ExWNYer Another interesting day in Met-land. They send Narvaez packing. Hard to keep a catcher who can't hit or throw a runner out, but I think they are eating another 8 mill. The money Steve is paying for guys that don't play for the Mets has to be staggering. Narvaez was notable this year for finally getting credit for a caught stealing on a play he had no part in AND having his first Citi Field hit coming in late May as a walk-off. After sending Baty down it looks like Vientos may actually get a legit shot in the majors. Naturally he alligator arms a foul pop up. but he had a great day at the plate. I don't have high hopes for him but I hope he makes the most of the opportunity. Looks like Reed Garret's deal with the devil ran out. A nice story about the Mets calling up a 34 year old: https://nypost.com/2024/05/31/sports/mets-jose-iglesias-longed-for-mlb-return-wont-take-it-for-granted/

I'm a life-long Long Islander. Dad was from Chicago, Mom from Boston so there was no allegiance to Jets or Giants. At the time neither of those teams were very good or had much in the way of star power - Namath was on his last legs. Every year I was a fan of a different team until Dad took me aside and explained that being a fan of the Super Bowl winner wasn't really being a fan. I chose the Bills mostly because of O.J. but also the N.Y. connection.

Nice to see Lindor lead on the field (4-4) after apparently leading in the players-only post game meeting yesterday. Also nice to see Pete come off the bench with a pinch hit double and score the tying run instead of heading to IL for two weeks. Lots of baseball left for sure. A couple more wins and I'll get my positive vibes back. That would be nice.

Maybe I have rose-colored glasses but I think the team has shown heart. Saw a stat a week or two ago that had them something like (don't quote me) 12-24 in the first two games of a series and 12-6 in the third (aka - getaway day). Unfortunately while they've displayed heart, they haven't matched it with competence. Lindor is exhibit A. I don't put the .190 average he was carrying in the 3-hole on the manager. WRT Diaz, tipping pitches has been my first suspicion for any pitcher that goes bad for years, I gotta give more thought to the injury possibility going forward. Either way it's guesswork on my part.
-
Well I certainly didn't know or even think Diaz was hurt. Was his velocity down? My go-to was questioningwhether he was tipping his pitches. I'm also not on board with piling on the manager - yet. I could not care less that a 31 year old journeyman reliever got DFA'd after first getting ejected and then being called into the managers office and then spouting off to the press anyway.
-
Holy crap, just when you thought it couldn't get worse. Diaz goes on the 15 day IL before the game, Pete gets hit by a pitch and exits the game and their journeyman reliever gets ejected, throws his glove into the stands, calls the Mets the worst #$&%@ team in MLB and gets DFA'd. Did I miss anything? Oh yeah, we lost 10-3.
-
Yeah, it looks to me like the joy/passion has left Pete's game. His HR totals are still on track, but he just looks lifeless compared to the old #LFGM Pete. Maybe he knows he's gone, maybe waiting on the contract is an albatross, maybe the losing has worn him down. 100% agree on Lindor's slow starts. It's every freaking year and combined with our top starters consistently missing the first few months every season it puts us in a early hole. I knew this was going to be a reset year, but I honestly thought they'd be better than this. They are only 6 games from a WC spot but I'd be deluding myself if I was optimistic. I'll look forward to getting Alvarez back and who knows, maybe even Senga, but this looks like a lost year already and like you I'll be interested to see what the trade deadline looks like.

@Gugny @Another Fan @ExWNYer Hoo boy, this season has gone off the rails. I was at the double-header yesterday and man was it ugly. Mets managed 7 hits over 19 innings and their 2 runs came from one swing of the bat. Throw in some shoddy fielding, a wasted quality start by Megill that included Ohtani going 0-5, another clutch performance by Freddie Freeloader and it made for some frustrating baseball. To make matters worse, there was a large contingent of Dodgers fans in attendance.

Whoa dude...there's like a stoner thread? Far out.

That's awesome that you met up with another poster for the Cleveland game! As for Citifield, the chop shops are all gone! Right now it's a large construction zone - they're (not Cohen as far as I know) building a soccer stadium. Cohen has big plans, no idea if they'll come to fruition: https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/new-york-mets-owner-steve-cohen-announces-8b-plan-to-develop-area-around-citi-field-in-queens/4840197/ I get the appeal of a pre-game destination but for the Mets and Flushing it feels forced to me. They had a bar attached to the stadium that they closed down - I assume due to lack of interest, I don't know anyone who ever went there. I suppose if they build up a nice area fans that arrive by mass transit may go earlier, I just hope it doesn't come at the expense of enjoying a beer in an open air lot before I head in.

A few of my favorite lines: It's not going to get any greener! It only turns one shade of green! The gas pedal is the long skinny one on the right! -
What's your interest level in the Buffalo Bandits?

I have a hard time figuring out what constitutes a penalty. As best as I can tell it's the difference between assault and felonious assault. And who the hell wants to play goalie? Much respect for those that play the position without pads. -

Agreed. Having an emotional tie to a team is huge for me. I got into UMD lacrosse when my son was a freshman and he was playing in the pep band so we went to a game and loved it. Turned out they were national champs that year which made it more fun to watch. My guess is that after my son graduates I'll drift away from lacrosse. -

I don't watch indoor but I've watched some college lax (Maryland) the past few years. Just saw them beat Duke today to make it to the semi's next weekend. It's a fun sport to watch even though I'm not 100% on all the rules. I think our local indoor team is relocating off Long Island, but that's a non-issue for me. -
As I've gotten older and endured countless losing seasons and/or disappointments by the Mets, Bills and Islanders I've walked back my hatred of rival teams success. Their success still rankles me, just not like it used to. In the past I stopped watching hockey after both the Isles and Rangers seasons ended. If the Rangers were still alive I was heavily invested in their demise and watched a lot of the games until they got eliminated. More recently I just follow them through the headlines and hope they lose. Didn't see a minute of the past series but was still hoping they'd have an epic collapse after going up 3-0. Oh well, hopefully their fanbase (including some close friends) will have their hearts ripped out next round. Either way it doesn't materially change my life.

@Gugny @Another Fan @ExWNYer Diaz blows another one. Off the top of my head I can't think of another player who I had zero confidence in (2019) and then had the utmost confidence in (2022) and now I'm trending back to no confidence. Hopefully just bumps in the road coming off the injury. If not, he could be part of another trade deadline purge - along with Polar Bear.

Why else would there be a lid?

Brad Marchand is probably my most hated pro athlete. He's gonna have some esplaining to do the next time he pulls one of his punk moves after his latest comments, which include: "People don't want to say it, but part of playoffs is trying to hurt every player on the other team." https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/40158531/bruins-brad-marchand-injuring-opponents-part-playoffs

Sports talk radio shills trying to convince me what I should bet on. Honorable mention: radio ads for online betting sites. These things make me wanna light one up and the next thing you know I'm hard on the brakes and my car smells like a Yuengling. Double whammy. -

Spilling my beer to avoid rear ending the car I didn't notice stopping in front of me while I was lighting up a spliff. -
Agreed on the runner on second. badol had a great line, he calls it the Manfred Man. I was in the not worried about Diaz camp before last night, but this is starting to look like history repeating. The difference this time around is we've seen him be dominant.
