Chargers finally sign Bosa: Who blinked?

Yeah I saw Philip Rivers picking up cans in the park for gas money the other day. it's a shame. If they were your team and went through the Ryan Leaf debacle I'd bet you'd be siding with the team on covering your arse. -

It's not unprecedented, it's just not happened recently. Bo Jackson was selected #1 overall one year and in the 6th round the next. I am comfortable saying that Bo Jackson was a heluva lot better football player than Joey Bosa. There's no way Bosa goes top 3 next year after a year off. Even if he does, he wasted a year of earnings (and earning on those earnings) and he's still 5 years away from contract number two instead of 4. Since the point of wanting the bonus money up front is the compound investment potential, not getting anything at all for a year is dumb. Let's say you're right and he's selected in a comparable slot with a comparable bonus and his second team capitulates and gives him his whole 14 million dollar bonus in 2017. The Chargers, IIRC, were willing to give him the 14 million by 2017 as well, just not all in 2016. While Bosa will still have the 14 million he'll miss on any investment potential on that money. Like I said, that's why he wants it now. Any scenario in this case Bosa loses. The other reason he could use for wanting it all in 2016 is if his agent has trepidation about the tax code changing in 2017. If he "wins" and is redrafted in 2017 that reason for holding out is moot - it will already be 2017 and the tax code will be whatever it is. -

Because the agent and the agency are trying to establish firm precedent for the language to be removed for future clients and to use this "victory" as marketing for future clients. -

Because it sets precedent and they just don't want to. I think you're overestimating the impact. FAs will follow the money. You have people like Antonio Gates who have had contract squabbles telling the kid to knock it off and get to camp. I'm guessing that most veterans think the kid is out of line at this point. -
Re: playbook, remember he's been with the team since we put him on the practice squad last November.

Bosa is playing a dangerous game - threatening to hold out for the year will ultimately hurt him more than the Chargers. He won't be a top 3 pick next year. In all likelihood he'll drop several rounds. Even dropping to the end of round 1 will significantly impact the bonus money and weaken his position about off-set language since the further you drop the more rock solid standard that becomes. On one hand I understand the financial argument he's making. He wants his money now so he can invest it now and get the benefit of it rather than having the Chargers sit on it and do the same. On the other hand, if he really does sit out the year he's not getting that year of earnings back ever and that giant bonus is gone until contract number 2. Even if he stays in the first round he'll risk losing huge money. The difference between the 3rd slot and the 32nd slot is about 18M dollars in total value. I'm sure the Chargers realize this which is why they aren't choosing to capitulate. In the end, Bosa will lose much more than San Diego if he does, in fact, refuse to play for the whole year and re-enter the draft. Since Bosa can't force San Diego to trade his rights, if I were San Diego I'd make it abundantly clear that he will not be traded before next year's draft. His current draft slot will be allowed to expire and he will be re-slotted when he is re-drafted. If he were to sign next March, even if his rights were traded, he's still technically the #3 pick in 2016 and entitled to that slot until the 2017 draft starts. -

They can't really do that, that salaries are slotted into a range of total compensation as per the CBA. When they say more cash this year than anyone but Wentz they are talking about the bonus money. Not that it's outside of the range, just when it gets paid out. Bosa wants all of it now with no off-set language. The Chargers want to defer part of it which is pretty normal and have off-set language which is also pretty normal. -

This is false. There have been lots of top 3 picks, including Carson Wentz this year who both have a deferred bonus payout and off-set language. This is all about his agent and nothing else. -

Kelly Stouffer almost did it - his rights were traded right before the next draft. Craig Erickson did it in 1991, he was the most recent. -

When's the last time we haven't royally screwed up a home night game? I'll hang up and listen. No, just 1. I like the Bills there, west coast coming east for a 1pm start usually plays out well for the home team. I think it will be high scoring though. -

Baltimore - Maybe Jets - Loss Cardinals - Bad Loss Patriots - Loss Rams - Maybe 49ers - Win Best case 3-3 but that requires 2 road wins, one on the West Coast. -

Saving myself a bunch of money this fall. -
of course, on the flip side if Donald didn't screw up the USFL then Herschel Walker never gets to Dallas and Dallas can't trade him to Minnesota for everything that wasn't nailed down and then Dallas doesn't win 3 Super Bowls in 4 years - beating us twice. You need to decide, could we have gotten through the AFC with Frank Reich - who we drafted in 1985 and another center because we wouldn't have had Hull either. If yes then you hate Donald Trump.
