I'm not torn, as I'd be ecstatic if he took the Cleveland HCing job! Shoot, as smart as he is he might actually do a good job there as HC, as long as he isn't calling the plays. What most Bills fans fail to realize is that this QB is NOT a Peyton Manning type who attended a big time college program (Tennessee)and was developed in that program. So throwing him into the NFL fire over and over is exactly what he needed to further develop into greatness. Allen basically needed to go begging to even get into a college scholarship and only one college in the entire country accepted him. That school was Wyoming and exactly how many big time NFL QBs have come from that college...none! Wanna know how many 1st round picks besides Josh Allen have come from that college since 1947? RB Lawrence Gains in 1976, Detroit, DB Arron Kyle 1976, Dallas. DT Ron Billingsley 1967. Yeah, that's it, three...and no other QB from that big time "Mountain West Conference." Wanna know how many times the Wyoming Cowboys have come in first place since 1999? Never! Josh Allen was a noted raw, developmental project at QB coming into the NFL, with a heart as big as the Wyoming sky with a burning desire to win. The problem as I see it is that Allen can be ruined by some overzealous OC in his desire to prove that "he" can be great. Over the years I've seen so very many really good college QBs ruined on bad offenses with bad OCs! Brian Daboll has never been good as an OC in building a good passing offense, ever! Four different NFL teams in six seasons and never had a better than 22nd passing offense and that was with Matt Moore in Miami. Daboll has never developed any young, inexperienced QB. Why do people think he will be able to magically do that now? If anything, Josh Allen is making Daboll look half way decent. What Allen needs is a ball control, run first, play action passing offense that will allow him to learn and grow as he develops without getting his confidence destroyed along the way. The Vikings power zone play action scheme under Kevin Stephanski would be a great scheme to develop Josh in. The Buffalo Bills under defensive minded Sean McDermott would appear to be the perfect fit for Allen as the Erhardt-Perkins offensive philosophy is supposed to be a ball control run first with play action scheme. With Daboll as OC that only gets utilized about half the time and in some games he literally goes passing crazy. Having Allen throw 48 times in that Texans game was utterly moronic. Especially considering the Bills had a 16 point lead and should have been pounding the rock with Singletary to control the clock.

You know who is another very very very smart man who works extremely hard...is actually quite brilliant and knows NFL offenses like no other? Chucky! That's right, Jon Gruden. He is he demanding type of HC/OC that wants his QB to be brilliant right along with him and know the play book backwards and forwards. So, at some point in a game he can call some obscure play from the back page of the playbook that the defense won't expect. Kinda the reason why he did so well with QB Rich Gannon and Gannon did so well under him. Or even QB Brad Johnson who was also a seasoned veteran. One thing to note, as smart as Gruden is, he has never developed a rookie QB from the start. Chan Gailey is another OC/HC who never developed a rookie, young QB and relied on a veteran QB like Fitz to run his offense. Brian Daboll reminds me of Gruden who needs a very smart, seasoned veteran QB to run his offense or otherwise it fails...and even then, the offense is often at times so complicated that all the other players on offense can't seem to get it to work properly. Bill Parcells offensive philosophy was to keep it simple. He would go over the offensive game plan each week and throw out all but around 25 offensive plays and tell his OCs to focus on making them work to perfection. Ex Green bay, Seattle HC Mike Holgren was also a perfectionist who would work an offense over and over until they got it right. Which is something I highly doubt Brian Daboll does considering Josh Allen's deep ball completion percentage. To those Bills fans thinking that losing Brian Daboll will somehow hinder Josh Allen's growth as a QB are very mistaken in my view. Should Allen get a new OC like a Pat Shurmer, Jim Caldwell, or even Bills QB coach Ken Dorsey. My take is the Bills offense would improve greatly as a result. If I'm the guy picking between Daboll, McDaniel's or Stefanski. I'd pick the later of the three. Although, I'm hoping that Daboll gets the Browns HC job.

Its clear that Daboll has been outclassed all season and it will be even more evident next year with better offensive talent. This season barley beating the bad teams and getting punked by teams we should have beaten, Browns, Patriots at least once and even the Ravens. Daboll was out coached by now unemployed Freddie Kitchens. Watching NFL network show how the Vikings OC kevin Stefanski drew up a game plan that the 13-3 Saints at New Orleans who just weren't ready for them and it all works off that play action power zone run scheme that is basically unstoppable with Dalvin Cook at RB. https://whodatdish.com/2020/01/03/new-orleans-saints-breaking-down-vikings/ Bills OC Brian Daboll is calling plays like he has an elite six year seasoned veteran QB and he doesn't! Perhaps in another fours years those plays might work if everyone on offense executes them perfectly. Still, calling for that many passes when the team already had a 16 point lead was mind boggling. Daboll doesn't have a young Peyton Manning behind center as he has a raw kid from Wyoming. Had Daboll worked the run game like he did against the Cowboys, Steelers against the Texans in the second half the Bills would in all probability playing in Kansas this weekend. Did I happen to mention that my favorite game to watch this last weekend was the Titans pounding the ball against the Patriots in New England. That Patriots loss took some of the pain away from the Bills loss. Knowing that the Bills record of four straight super bowls will stand.

Whats heartening is that the Patriots first lost to the Dolphins to end the regular season and then went down in the first WC round. Lovin it! So, with Brady aging and Bill Belichick looking not so happy the end of the dynasty might be very close. Things might get very tense in NE should Jimmy G and the 49ers win it all this year.
-
That ain't nothin! He was out coached by now unemployed Freddie Kitchens!! I've always had the frame of mind that McD is a good HC and knows what he is doing... Now after realizing this man let his OC go forward with Nathan Peterman as the teams starter for 2018. The OC also screwed it up most of 2018 so when the team got behind in points by as little as three, would go pass happy while forgetting about the run game only to lose every time. 6-10 Well, that things would change and the HC would have a sit down with the OC. That the Bills would find their run game and go with it this season. Only to see the Bills barely beating bad teams while losing to the future playoff teams every time, Eagles, Patriots 2x, Ravens and even the losing Browns. (The jets don't count) the ONLY team that actually beat Buffalo soundly were the Eagles. That sit down never happened and it looks like Brian Daboll has had a free hand to do whatever he wants. Question, how do you lose a 13 point lead to a team with the worst red zone defense in the league when you are in their red zone five times? By kicking four FGs? The Texans had the 19th defense in points allowed and 28th in yards allowed. The Bills OC had a brain fart of asking his young, inexperienced QB to throw 48 times while running Singletary only 13 times to be certain JJ Watt got a sack and a hit or two on Allen. If you go back and look over the season every time the Bills ran more then they threw the ball they won. Meanwhile almost ever time they threw the ball more they lost. Save that first Jets game. Now I'm in the frame of mind that its the head coach holding this team back with his bad, overpaid choice at OC. (I believe Kirby Jackson let it slip that Brian Daboll is the highest paid OC in the league.) This is deja vu all over again with Maroon and his choice of OC in Hackett. Probably going to end up ruining Josh Allen...there are only so many times you can throw a QB into the fire again and again. The (9-7) Tennessee Titans showed the 2019 Bills how to beat the Patriots 'IN' New England in their WC game. Will Buffalo learn?

Position-by-position analysis of Beane’s Statements
Nihilarian replied to Dkollidas's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The games that showed the biggest weaknesses on this team Eagles, Patriots, Ravens, Texans. The Eagles dominated both on Buffalo Bills lines...both sides of the lines need to be bigger, stronger, faster. The Ravens with that cover 0 blitz and Buffalo had no answer...Texans missed blocking assignments. The Bills need a Derrick Henry type of RB and power run game. Can this scouting staff find that big, tall "catch everything" special wide receiver in the draft? They missed on DK Metcalf. The 2020 Buffalo Bills won't win many games if they keep forcing Josh Allen to throw 48 times a game...especially when they have a 13 point lead. -
Even when you think you know...you never know! So many owners want instant success and sometimes it works and sometimes it takes years to build a playoff team from a bad team. The Lions should have made a change! The Jags should have made a change and instead made Coughlin the scapegoat. Both the Cowboys and the Panthers made quick judgement with their coaching decisions and look what happened when Buffalo did that with Rex Ryan. In one or two year ALL those teams I mentioned could be indeed looking for a change at the top. These super rich owners are very impatient and want to win right away. In Jerry Jones case he might feel "his" time is running out and wants to win again right now! The NFL= not for long! To this point, the Browns have interviewed five candidates: McCarthy, prominent offensive coordinators in Greg Roman (Baltimore Ravens), Eric Bieniemy (Kansas City Chiefs) and Brian Daboll (Buffalo Bills), and standout defensive coordinator Robert Saleh (San Francisco 49ers). https://www.wkyc.com/article/sports/nfl/browns/report-cleveland-browns-want-new-coach-respected-by-these-players-more-than-anything/95-95713a59-897f-4d56-9aef-31bc0f3eefbf

Well, the owner in Indy does have a history and perhaps he knew something about Andrew Luck going forward. To me, Cleveland remains about the most dysfunction organization in the league with no end in sight for those poor fans. Washington is a close second and now Carolina is closing that gap with new owner Tepper.

My take is this is a very strange year. I would have thought more head coaches would be fired and we should see that next off season. Next year at this time something could be going on with Miami, the NY Jets, and even in New England. The Bengals 2-14 and Browns could be making moves again depending. The Jags 6-10, maroons time might finally run out. The Broncos 7-9, Raiders 7-9, Chargers 5-11 might all be changing regimes. The Cowboys and Giants might be regretting their recent moves. The Bears 8-8 and Lions 3-12 finally give up on two slugs. The Panthers 5-11, Falcons 7-9 Bucs 7-9 might all be looking for change depending.

I don't hate that thought! Mostly because I've seen what happens when you hire a competent OC. I don't even know who Arthur Smith is and have never even heard of him. But what he did with Ryan Tannehill and that Titans run game this season I'd love to see him in Buffalo calling plays. That run game they have is the exact identity the Buffalo Bills needed this season. For the love of god look at what the Titans did to the Patriots IN New England in that WC game. This is exactly what Buffalo should have done to NE 2x, to Baltimore, to Cleveland. People keep telling me that running the ball with authority is old fashioned and outdated and yet look at what Greg Roman did in Baltimore with the #1 run game. Top running teams in 2019 in rushing yards per game, Baltimore-San Francisco-Tennessee-Dallas-Minnesota-Seattle-Indianapolis-Buffalo-Houston-Arizona-Philadelphia. QB Drew Brees broke all sorts of passing records along with his #1 WR in the league in Michael Thomas with 149 receptions! The Saints went 13-3 and where are they now?
-
Not only would the Bills have won the game, they would have dominated it! like 35-0. All those FGs should have been TDs. They get to 13-0 and for some inexplicable reason forget what to do when they have a big lead. Run the crap outta the ball and control the clock and keep the Texans offense off the field while also keeping the Bills defense on the bench nice and fresh. I don't know that a true #1 WR would have won that game with Josh Allen throwing the ball 48 times. There was absolutely no need to throw that much as Singletary with only 13 carries and why the was Frank Gore even on the field? Why did it take the last two games of the season to get Duke Williams involved? This wasn't Billsy, this was outright stupidity! There is only one guy I blame for this loss and for a lost season with a championship defense along with an underutilized running back.

Cleveland interviewing Jim Schwartz for HC
Nihilarian replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Caldwell would make a great OC in Buffalo too...if leaves or in my dreams gets fired. If i'm not mistaken didn't he get hired as QB coach, assistant HC for the Dolphins last off season and took a leave of absence for some reason. Although he remained as a consultant. -

This might actually be a good move for them! A lot depends on who he chooses as his coordinators. -
I didn't want him either because of his lousy 3 cone drill and he could only one one route... Lots of teams got this one wrong, so I don't feel so bad.
-
The Bills were up 13-0 at halftime... so why in the world would you ask Allen to throw 48 times in that game? This with giving Devin Singletary only 13 carries all game with a 4.8 YPC avg. The smart move on offense would have been to start running the ball the entire second half, run the clock and play keep away. What the Bills did on offense in the second half was about as brainy as having Brian Daboll get some carries and asking Frank Gore to run the ball with 7 runs for 1 yard. There is only one guy I pin this loss on!

Daboll Brutal Down the Stretch
Nihilarian replied to billsfan_34's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Btw that trick play with a throw from Brown to Allen for a TD is nothing new as Jim Kelly probably told him about it. The Bills ran that same play to the same side in the late 80's with RB Rob Riddick throwing to Kelly. It didn't go for a TD but it did go for a big gain. Trick plays are all well and good, fun to watch but they don't usually win games. What does win games is a formula to build a dominant running attack like the one that the Titans used against the Patriots in New England, knocking them out of the playoffs. A formula to build a passing game like the Patriots have to move the chains down the field to reach the red zone and score. What Brian Daboll builds is too complex and just not good enough to sustain drives. The offensive line has far to many penalties which is a lack of discipline. Players missing blocks or blocking the wrong guy. I like Frank Gore but he was more or less useless in that playoff game besides one run for 14 yards. Gore went 8 carries for 22 yards and take away that one run and it was 7 carries for one yard! Singletary with only 13 carries for 58 yards a 4.8 ypc avg was criminal. Why wait until the last regular season game and a playoff game to get Duke Williams involved? 48 Throws for Josh, Singletary 7 targets, 6 rec for 76 yards John Brown, 8 targets, 4 rec for 50 yards Duke Williams, 10 targets, 4 rec for 49 yards Cole Beasley, 5 targets, 4 rec for 44 yards Isaiah McKenzie, 5 targets, 4 rec for 23 yards Brutal down the stretch is about right. If the Bills worked the run game against the Ravens, Patriots like they did against the Steelers, Cowboys they would have beaten them along with the NY Jets to take the division. I'm hoping that some team steps up and hires Daboll away as HC. If not, this jackass of an OC will probably ruin him. -
Daboll Brutal Down the Stretch

Winning games as a defensive team? They were never the 85 Bears or 2000 Ravens, 1976 Steel curtain, 1972 no name Miami defense. The 2013 Seattle legion of Boom. I was at a game in 1987, Nov 29th to be exact in which the Bills played the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins offense didn't cross the 50 yard line until late in the 4th when they benched Dan Marino and put in Don Strock, who promptly drove down the field to the end zone where the phins turned the ball over. Final score, Buffalo 27, Miami 0. After this game I went and bought season tickets. That year the Bills defense was 12th overall. The offense with Ronnie Harmon, Rob Riddick, Kelly and Reed. This was the year they drafted Shane Conlan. the Bills ended that season 7-9. The offense was 24th, 16th. In 1988 is what you are thinking of where the defense was 3rd in points, 4th in yards, while the offense was 14th and 12th. That year ended in the AFC Championship game in Cincy. Thurman Thomas was drafted in 88. So, 87, 88 the defense was better stat wise. Bills fans did nickname the Bills defense the "Blizzard defense". In 1989 the Bills defense was 14th in points allowed, 11th in yards. However, the offense 3rd in points, 5th in yards. That season ended in Cleveland in a wildcard game. Don Beebe was drafted in 89. Lofton was there for the 89 season. The Bills offense pulled to the forefront stat wise during the 89 season and never looked back. The offense, was never the icing on the cake as Jim Kelly was the main feature of that team since arriving in 1986. Bills fans went nuts and the stadium started selling out once he was signed and came to Buffalo. While the 88 defense was better stat wise, it was Kelly's arm and Thurman running that got them to 12-4. -

I disagree with this. In 1990 the Bills had most prolific offense in the league #1 in points scored and with that "hurry up" "run and shoot offense" nobody could keep up with them. #3 in passing TD's, #2 in rushing TD's. Going into that super bowl they were early +15 point favorites against the NY Giants. While the defense was good they were #6 points allowed, #8 in yards allowed and most notably weak up the middle against the run.(see NY Giants SB) What made that defense work was that the offense would get the lead and then let Bruce Smith, Biscuit loose in pass rushing. Perhaps you missed that AFC playoff game against Miami in Buffalo 44-34. After this game Dolphins players were heard saying, "i can't believe we scored 34 points and lost". Championship game against the Raiders, 51-3. -

Go back and read that first half thread for Buffalo, Texans. Many, many Bills fans were calling him a hero. Out of four first half drives for the Bills TD, punt, FG, FG. You just explained why Josh Allen isn't the problem. That trick play was the only TD play for the Bills. Why can't this OC get the run game going well enough to carry the offense. Why doesn't the passing offense work? Why can't this team make screen plays work? Your ragging on the Bills QB and yet he was the teams leading rusher with 9 rushes for 92 yards a 10.2 YPC avg. Allen also had one receiving TD. What you just don't get is that the Bills current offensive coordinator has been with four NFL teams with multiple QBs and they all have played poorly. Dabolls passing offenses have all been in the upper 20's, 30's. None have been good. -
basically yes, everyone else turned the job down Chan Gailey also fits into this category, only perhaps worse. In the 2010 off season Buddy Nix was hired as GM. Russ Brandon let it slip to the media that the Bills were willing to pay their next head coach 10 million per. This got the Bills interviews with both Bill Cowher and Mike Shanahan. Even though Shanny had already agreed to a contract with the Redskins he wanted to listen to what Buffalo offered. Naturally after the Interviews that amount of money was never offered to anyone. Once that word got out most everyone who had asked for an interview were no longer interested in the job. Even assistant coaches that were called were now declining interviews. Buddy Nix wanted to hire Marty Schottenheimer and Ralph Wilson said no. In all probability because he wouldn't be a puppet figure as HC and wouldn't let Wilson micromanage him like he did with others recently. It was known that Dick Jauron was on the phone to Detroit daily during the season. After this Buddy Nix was getting desperate to find someone. Bill Cowher had stated in his interview that he would hire Gailey as his OC. At that time Gailey was out of the NFL as he was fired from the Chiefs as their OC two years previous. So, the Bills hire Gailey and promote him to head coach. Talk about a reach, in his 3 seasons in Buffalo as HC he never got better then 6-10. Some bills fans still love the guy...dunno why either. He had his choice between Fitz, Trent Edwards and Brian Brohm and chose Edwards. Gailey was lucky that Fitz was even on the roster or the team would have been worse than 6-10, much worse!
