Stevie comes to mind. Anyway, I'm not going to dissect this win...on the road...against the #4 team in total defense...against the #1 team against the run. I'm just crazy happy they pulled this one out, and Ryan's emotional outburst after the game kinda epitomizes how I feel. Those Bills played their hearts out!

That's just it Yolo. The Bills are 29th in the NFL in getting pressure on the QB so how can you expect the Bills to get any pressure on Fitz at all on him when he is playing behind the #1 line in the league in allowing sacks, and the #5 line in allowing hits? Because of those stats it tells me this game Fitz will have all day to throw with very little pressure on him. Then Jets WR Brandon Marshall is currently the 6th leading receiver in the NFL. I don't like this at all because I want Buffalo to win this game. However, I just don't see it. Unless the Bills offense can put up big numbers, and they are going up against the #4 team in total defense that is also #1 against the rush. A very tough game on the road, and with a short week to boot.

You can daydream about the pressures / hurries all you want, but the truth is they go hand in hand with the sacks. The Bills are currently 29th out of 32 in QB pressures / hurries. The Jets are the #1 team in the NFL with only 9 sacks allowed all year, and have allowed 31 hits which puts them at 5th best. This is not a good match up for Buffalo unless Ryan changes his scheme.

Ryan has already said that Fitz is one of those QB's that get the ball out so quickly that the pass rush doesn't stand a chance. The Jets have the #4 defense with the #1 defense against the run. This game could be so different from last game. I think the Bills penalties will be the difference. Jets 24-17 Bills

If we can see this then so must Doug Whaley, and he must be fuming on how some of the defensive players are currently being misused. Whaley has been able to find and bring in so many good defensive players in his time as GM so I suspect he had a vision as to how good this years defense was supposed to be under Ryan. I would think that he must have thought he would see an improved version of Mike Pettine's defense, I know I did. The new owners probably can't see whats specifically wrong this year, and given that they still must be concerned that the teams 1/4 billion dollar investment on that front four is not paying off in this scheme. I can only wonder if these new owners are happy with the head coach they hired. Right now I have a love / hate relationship with Rex Ryan as the Bills head coach. I love Tyrod Taylor, Richie Incognito, and even Percy Harvin when I saw how much effort he put out on the field. I love how Rex Ryan embraced the community. How he had drinks with the local fans, and how he had his truck painted in a Bills theme. Rex is very, very likable! But then so was Chan Gailey. Jauron's players loved him, and played their hearts out for him every game. Then we all saw how limited they were in their inability to win games. While there is still hope for this season at 4-4 the playoffs are looking very unlikely with 5 of the next 8 games on the road. Plus, the Bills play the Patriots again in New England in two weeks, and I can only wonder what records the defense will give up this game. I'm dreading this game. I absolutely hate his big mouth, and his constant goading of other teams while giving them more incentive to win the game to shut him up. He is the polar opposite of Bill Belichick / Marv Levy in that regard, and others areas too. I hate all the penalties this team has accrued this season. Mostly because they give the opponent first downs, and ruin a series of plays and team effort because of stupid player mistakes. This is all about team discipline, and poor coaching. I hate the inflexibility in the current defensive scheme where its my way or nothing. I never would have thought that Rex Ryan was the type of coach that forced his system on players that don't fit his scheme.

I simply don't understand why some fans refuse to acknowledge how one coaching staff can have the #4 defense, and with basically the very same players suddenly become mediocre to bad. Then say that nothing is wrong this year. The Bills currently 15th in net yards allowed 21st in pass defense, and not because of bad play by the CB's, as the lesser pressure on the opposing QB then longer they need to stay in pass coverage! Sacks matter, and QB pressures, hits, hurries all matter because the more those things happen the more the QB tries to rush to get the ball out thus the more mistakes they make with the ball. Eight games played is enough to see a bad scheme, and actually it very noticeable in week two against the Patriots. You know, the one where Brady set a Buffalo Bills franchise worst 466 yards passing by one player. That game the defensive scheme was a soft cover cushion that had the DB's play off the line 10 yards, and the front four got very little pressure on Brady. How little pressure on Brady you ask? "Rex Ryan, Dennis Thurman and defensive coaching staff: Ryan told his team that this loss was on his shoulders, and so he's a natural place to start in the "down" column. Ryan's defensive game plan couldn't put pressure on Tom Brady-- the Bills disrupted (a sack, batted ball, passed defense or interception) only 9.8 percent of Brady's dropbacks, a lower rate than in any of the Bills' 2014 games -- and he never seemed to have an effective plan for stopping either Rob Gronkowski or Julian Edelman." http://espn.go.com/blog/buffalo-bills/post/_/id/21042/bills-breakdowns-vs-patriots-start-with-rex-ryan-defensive-staff We all knew and saw it with George Edwards, with Dave Wannstedt, and we saw the excitement that can come with a heavy blitzing scheme in Mike Pettine. In 2013 under Pettine the Bills had the #10 defense, and #4 in pass defense, #2 in sacks with 57 which were actually more they Schwartz had in 2014 which was 54. Most of us were expecting to see that Mike Pettine blitz heavy defense this year, and it just isn't happening. The Bills are currently on pace to have a 26 sack season. So why on earth did the Bills just pony up the big money for Dareus, Hughes this year only to see them virtually wasted, and Dareus especially who has only one sack while being used for gap control. Anyway, Bills fans have a solid reason to be frustrated, aggravated, and concerned about this years defense because most of us expected greatness, and not excuses!

That bolded is absolutely true, and I don't get why more fans don't see that. Because of Chan's short, quick passing scheme, and Fitz's ability to scramble the line allowed a league low 23 sacks in 2011.(But also allowed 69 hits on the QB at 10th) In 2012 30 sacks put them in the top ten with 75 hits on the QB which puts them at 15th for that. If you think only in terms of pass blocking then the lines haven't been that bad over the years. 2012 the Bills were still pretty bad in run blocking grading around 20th or so. You also need to recall the years (2009-2012) that Wood ended his season on IR, and there were just so many injuries to so many players year after year. It was like a revolving door at LT after Peters was traded, and before Glenn. It took a few years to replace Levitre who graded as their best linemen in 2012. Currently the left side of the line is very solid with Incognito grading about the best with Glenn, and Wood right behind him. Its the right side of the line that has had difficulties. On another note, In terms of the Bills DB's play this season, and considering the lack of QB sacks, pressures this year by the Bills defense going from 1st to 27th I'm really very surprised they are playing as well as they have been. The less the pass rush the longer the DB's need to maintain the coverage. That soft coverage scheme against the Patriots was downright ridiculous, and I really hope they don't do that again in two weeks.

Its not just that. The Bills had the #1 defense in sacks, and QB pressures, and now have great difficulty in getting any pressure in the QB! If its a passing league isn't it all about getting pressure on the QB to make him hurry, and thus make him more prone to making mistakes? The crappy Dolphins offense had 16 first downs passing, and Talleywhacker was sacked 2x by Hughes because he was lined up next to Mario this game. Last year the Bills sacked him 4 times in one game, and 5 in the other. The Bills have invested 1/4 billion dollars into their front four only to see them more used in gap control instead of rushing the passer. I would think that Doug Whaley, and the new owners are even saying wtf happened to the pass rush!

More to the point was those skill players returning from injuries along with two O linemen. EJ didn't have Sammy, Karlos, Henderson or Miller. EJ stunk it up no question. I just think Watkins alone would have made a huge difference for him. Just take away what Sammy did in the Miami game and what are you left with... 181 yards passing minus the 168 yards for Watkins!! McCoy had 2 rec for 7 yards. Woods had one for 0 yards. Clay had one for 6 yards. See where I'm going here? When the run game is working so well that you only need to throw the ball 12 times in a game you know the opposing defense is reeling from trying to stop the run. Then the added threat of Tyrod running it had to add to their frustration. Different teams, different situations, different players is all I was saying, and no real need to bring up how bad EJ was under totally different circumstances.

Well, if the Bills give the Jets 7 first downs by penalties like they did against Miami, and the Giants it will help them win. But was it previously pining for the fjords?

I would like to see both Cogs, and Glenn resigned before they both become free agents.

Let me refresh some thoughts here since you felt the NEED to throw EJ in there. Not defending him but there is more to the story here. Good job on the post Bo, just don't see the need to throw EJ under the bus some more, as the guy is already roadkill. Sammy played, Miller played, Henderson played, Karlos played, and Tyrod played who only threw it 12 times all game long! Which meant the run game was working to the tune of 36 rushes for 266 yards.That rushing stat with with an average gain of 8.2 yards per carry. 420 yards total yards of offense with 33 points! Now take away Karlos - 110 yards 2 TD's. Take away Sammy 168 yards 1 TD. Take away those skill players, and 2 blockers and you get 163 yards of offense with 12 points. Now think about the Dolphins being 31st against the run. Greg Roman had almost the perfect game plan against the Phins, and lets hope the offense can keep this up. The NY Jets have the #4 overall defense, and are currently #1 against the run.

Gonna definitely be interesting to see how this seasons progression goes, and if Tyrod can stay healthy the rest of the games. The LBers are lame in the current system, and the safety's aren't up to par. The team needs a clear #2 WR because Woods is not looking like he is it. From CBS Sports, 19. The guy would fit right in on a Rex Ryan team since it isn't about keeping a low profile, and not getting penalties. EDIT: Percy has never had problems behind the scenes with his teammates or anything like that. How many 1k yard seasons has Harvin had in his 7 year career, none? And it would be nice if Robert Woods had some of Stevie's ability to get open, and make plays. How many 1000 yard years has Wood or Watkins had? Watkins stays off twitter, and out of the public eye, huh? He just once in a while openly slams the fans. Sure, Stevie had his issues. But the kid played injured A LOT, and always found a way to get open even against some of the best CB's in the league like Revis Island. I'd love to see Sammy or Woods get back to back to back 1000 yard receiving years in Buffalo!

I gotta wonder if the Bills will pony up the money to keep either, and if not a LT will almost be a mandatory pick. I also wonder if Rex Ryan won't want a linebacker instead.

Oh, and I agree! To the bolded, Fans will be fans, and most only focus on the QB and wins. The Dolphins had almost 400 yards of total offense with Talleywhacker 309 yards passing, and 16 first downs passing. The Bills gave the Dolphins 7 first downs by penalty with 13 for 94 yards against Buffalo. The defense only two sacks against a bad phins line. I'm dreading the thought of what Brady will do to this defense again in two weeks. Sadly that even with the by week, and with that extra time off it wasn't the defense that changed or saved the day. Instead it was the injured offensive skill players returning. McCoy 112 yards rushing, and a TD. Karlos 110 yards rushing 2 TD's. Sammy 8 rec for 168 yards and 1 TD. I would have never thought that Ryan would force his defensive scheme on a team better suited to run something different. A my way or the highway type guy.
