I agree with all of this, and the bolded are most important. -
Bring Back Jim Schwartz Next Season Please.....
Nihilarian replied to Protocal69's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Probably because they were swayed by Whaley, Brandon to hire Rex Ryan to get his Mike Pettine style of defense in Buffalo. If they knew then what they know now I highly doubt Rex Ryan gets hired. The penalties, worst in the league is bad coaching, and lack of discipline. The 20th ranked defense that was #4 overall last year. Now 30th in sacks that was #1 last year. Bad special teams coverage units with the same coach, players. Communication difficulties- headsets issues with QB's not getting the plays, and now figuring out which plays to throw a red flag at. Game management issues. Dick Jauron, Chan Gailey are looking like better hires right now. The Bills aren't yet 6-10, and I wonder if that is where this team ends up. I would have preferred giving Schwartz another shot at HC simply because he had earned it with the defense #1 team in sacks, and #4 overall defense. This years D would be even better with Darby. Last years defense with this years offense and the Bills are probably 9-2. JMO -
Time to admit it: Marrone>Ryan
Nihilarian replied to Estelle Getty's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Do you even watch other football games or other teams? The 2015 NY Jets are doing so well this year not because of Chan Gailey or Fitz, but rather their defense has been right around #1 all season long. Currently the NY Jets are fielding the #3 overall defense in yards. #12 against the pass, #1 against the rush, #7 in give/take. The Jets offense is currently 14th in total defense, and 20th in passing, 14th in rushing. Those numbers put their current offense at a very mediocre grade. BTW Revis was injured recently and didn't play the last two games because of a concussion. Rex Ryan is the Buffalo Bills DC, and sets up the scheme for his assistant coaches. The team is running the scheme he is directing them to run. Stating that you do need to realize that a huge reason this team is losing games, and not doing well on defense is because of the lack of pressure on the opposing QB's almost all season long. The reason I say almost is because Ryan's defense showed up recently in the second game against the Patriots were his Buffalo defense was able to put more pressure on Brady then he has seen the last seven years! Brady was under pressure 20 of his 40 drop backs. Currently the Buffalo Bills are 30th in QB sacks, pressures, hurries. From #1 in the league last year to 30th this year, and you think he is still a top NFL defensive coordinator? The Bills are currently 20th in total defense. Those numbers are just crazy bad for this year, and after watching that Patriots game I came to realize its all in the schemes. Ryan showed he can still blitz in that NE game, and get after the QB like he was supposed to do this season. Instead we get to watch some lame cover scheme that is like watching the talent being wasted in 2010-2013 with Edwards-Wannstedt as DC's. The defense is so bad this year in getting pressure on the opposing QB I have to ask myself is it contrived? Is Rex Ryan purposely trying to get fired? Rex's brother was just fired by the Saints for having the #31st worst defense in the NFL, and the Bills defense is slowly but surely getting there. Do the boys want to spend more time with the dad? Is Ryan attempting to pull a Doug Marrone of sorts in getting paid by Buffalo while working another job? After all he is currently under contract for another 4 years at 5 mill per. Is Ryan attempting to tank the defense the same way Marrone tanked the offense last year in attempting to get more power by getting Whaley fired? I don't know what the answer is, and I only know what I see. I saw the Bills get so much pressure on Brady that he was literally screaming at his O line because of that pressure. Then he lets scrub Alex Smith have all the time in the world to throw deep passes. Cover over pressure never works. Like I said I don't know what the answer is, and I only know that this year is being screwed by the head coach for some unknown reason. For me its pretty tough to sit back and watch the games knowing that they could be terrorizing QB's every game instead of letting them have all day to throw. I think the players themselves realize something is wrong too. From first to 30th with basically the same players, and both Kyle Williams, and Mario were absent for that second Patriots game. Think about it! -
Rex Ryan says changes coming for review process
Nihilarian replied to Estro's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The head set issues. The penalties. Bad special teams with the same coach, and players that were pretty darn good last year The #4 overall defense from last year loaded with talent and drafted one of the best DB's in the 2nd round in now ranked 20th. The #1 team in sacks from last year is now 30th, and 30th in sack percentage, QB hurries. Dave Wanstedt, and George Edwards say Hi Rex! This team can still salvage the season at 5-6 with 5 games to go, and none look like easy games now. 10-6 or 9-7 or 8-8 or 7-9 or 6-10 or 5-11. My guess is towards the latter at 7-9 with little or no pressure on the opposing QB even Cassel will probably beat Buffalo. Houston @ Philly @ Wash Dallas Jets -
I hate to admit it, but Taylor sucks
Nihilarian replied to Doug Flutie Band's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
There are times when he does stare down his primary target, and other times when he makes a few reads. Taylor has some holes in his game for sure, but the guy still only has nine starts under his belt. Like all players starting their first season he needs more time to develop. I've watched this young man have some good one half of games, and at some point he should put it all together to have some really good complete games. All Bills fans really should be excited from what they are seeing this very inexperienced player do at times. JMO At this point I think I'm far, far more disappointed in the defensive scheme then I am the Bills QB. Game after game no pressure on the QB with a chosen cover over pressure scheme, save the one game against the Patriots! The Bills are 30th now in sacks, sack percentage, and QB hurries. Any NFL QB given enough time will pick any defensive secondary apart. Rex Ryan took the #1 sacking team in the league, #4 overall in total defense, and turned them into the 20th ranked defense. Can you say George Edwards- Dave Wannstedt stupid bad -
Time to admit it: Marrone>Ryan
Nihilarian replied to Estelle Getty's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
While Rex Ryan asked to bring in Richie Incognito, Percy Harvin, and Tyrod Taylor. So he managed to do some good things, and had some good intentions. For a man who had a rep of building some great defenses..I'm think he is looking more and more like his brother rather then his father. Game management...stinks Defense...stinks Penalties...stinks Special teams...stinks WTF Happened to the defense? Lets face it, that everyone thought this years defense with this much talent would be the #1 defense in the league. Then if Jim Schwartz could field a unit that was #4 overall, and could lead the NFL in sacks. That Rex Ryan would surely shatter sack records this year. The 2015 Buffalo Bills are currently 30th in sacks, and 30th in sack percentage, 30th in defensive hurries. So this tells me that Gilmore, Darby, Roby have to do so much more in coverage because this defense simply isn't getting very much pressure on the opposing QB. What a freaking joke!! This team is currently 20th in total defense, 24th against the pass, 15th against the run, 9th in give/take. Rex Ryan was handed the keys to an exotic Bugatti Veyron, and turned it into a crappy near last place Prius. Marrone was actually a better head coach. Its just his choice of OC was horrid, and his choice for DC's were near brilliant. At this point i don't know that Rex Ryan would even be a decent DC anymore. -
Trust me it was great time while owning the division for so long with so many future HoFers on the team. Winning so many games year after year, and traveling to different cities with a usual positive outcome at the end. Owning season tickets actually gave you a shot to get super bowl seats from the team at cost!

I can only think that Roman or Ryan instilled in this kid (Tyrod) to not turn the ball over, and not ruin the season for the team like Geno Smith did last season with all his turnovers. If it was Rex Ryan it would fit with his distraught in blaming last years Jets 4-12 record all on Geno Smith. Or Taylor is just so afraid to throw into double coverage, and would prefer just to throw to the safer single covered receivers in fear of getting intercepted. He sure didn't do that in the second half! For the life of me I simply can't comprehend not throwing the ball to Sammy Watkins more then once the entire second half considering what he was able to do in the first half. I wouldn't care if they had 5 defenders on Sammy I'd be getting him the ball!! The Bills offense dominated the first half of that Chief game in ToP nearly 20 min to 10 min, and then inexplicably laid an egg in the second half We fans really need to find out what the problem is with this scenario! Is it Taylor? Is it Roman? I mean Watkins has no control of how many times Taylor chooses to throw to him. I don't really want to read that its all because Tyrod is simply taking what the defense 'gives him" because of course the opposing team would rather see the ball in Hogans hands over Watkins. This doesn't stop every other team / QB in the NFL from continually finding their best receiver. its the OC's & QB's job to get the ball to the most explosive play maker! If its Taylor the Bills need to draft someone who will throw to the super star receiver all game long, and not just when he looks open or it suits him! If its Roman the Bills need to fire his ass, and hire someone with the intelligence to find ways to get Watkins at the very least 10 touches a game! Just an FYI that Sammy Watkins has yet to see 10 touches in a game this season, and has only seen 10 targets once this year. To put that in perspective WR DeAndre Hopkins of the Houston Texans has seen the ball as many as 22 targets in a game, and no fewer the 8 targets. Up until this past week Hopkins was seeing more then 11 targets a game. And a reminder that the Texans QB's have been Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett, CJ Yates, and each and every one has thrown at least 11 times a game to Hopkins despite the coverage's.

Tyrod Actually Played A "Good Game"
Nihilarian replied to Bryce Paup's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You simply can't play half a game, and expect to win! C'mon he suddenly forgot to throw to Sammy Watkins in the entire second half! Let me refresh those second half numbers. 7 of 12 for 50 yards in an entire second half with the outcome of the game on the line! -
I Hope We Don't Lose Whaley Because Of Rex
Nihilarian replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Its not clear at all to me as I have to think that both Russ Brandon, and Doug Whaley gave their stamp of approval on Rex Ryan, and in fact probably endorsed him pretty hard because of his defensive background. The new owners knew nothing about who to hire and their mistake was listening to the men who had been doing it for the last owner. Hell, we all thought that this years Bills defense was going to be special, and instead Ryan changed up his scheme to a cover over pressure. Which took the best sacking / pressuring defense in the league the last two years and made it opposing QB friendly -
With the loss to NE the Bills went from the 5th seed to the 8th seed With the loss to KC the Bills went from the 8th seed to the tenth seed Mostly because the Chiefs won and are now 6-5. The Jets won and are now 6-5. Houston won and is now 6-5. Pittsburgh is 6-5 Then the Raiders won and are now 5-6 like Buffalo. Now, does that Houston game still look like an easy win? http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/standings/playoffrace

I Hope We Don't Lose Whaley Because Of Rex
Nihilarian replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'll always think of the three draft picks, two firsts and a fourth for a player when the team still had no franchise QB. Then sit by the last two years and watch his coaches use that player as a decoy or not even use him. Which is as some fans put it "criminal". Drafting two OT's one in the second round, one in the seventh, and both should be backups. Whats telling is this team spent all that money to keep Dareus, Hughes only to see both under utilized by the current coaching staff. Now with both Kyle Williams, and Mario in perhaps their final year in Buffalo. Then with both Cordy Glenn, and Richie Incognito as free agents plus needing to sign Gilmore will be interesting to see what happens. Rex Ryan was a bad choice for a head coach, and I have to think that Doug Whaley recommended him to the new owners. I'm not down with firing anybody just yet, and in fact I'd like to see the team hire that football czar then make him president of football operations. Then let him make the decisions on who to fire, and who to keep. So the team never again uses three draft picks on anything other then a QB. It will also remove Russ Brandon completely from any football decisions, and keep him involved solely in the financial / business side. -
Can we all just agree that Rex Ryan was a bad hire! His big mouth usually only manages to fire up the opposing team and give them bulletin board material to motivate them to shut him up. The Penalties! The team did manage to get better the previous three games only screw up the most important game of the season 9 for 91 yards The cover over pressure scheme Ryan has been running with his defense has stunk all year, save one game when he changed it for the second Patriots game. Ryan has trouble managing a game, and making the right flag calls. I highly doubt this team will ever see the playoffs with Rex Ryan as the head coach!

The Honeymoon Period is Over With The Pegulas
Nihilarian replied to K-Apps's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
You have to figure that they were swayed by the CEO, and GM into thinking that they had a plan in place and needed to see it run its course. That was probably the reason that the new owners never did hire that football czar they attempted to hire in Bill Polian. How long these new owners will continue to listen to that CEO, and GM really depends on how the team finishes this year. I would think not for long if the team continues to lose games the way they lost this one! These new owners didn't become billionaires by making stupid decisions or hiring stupid people. Give them some time, and they will make the right changes. -
Tyrod Actually Played A "Good Game"
Nihilarian replied to Bryce Paup's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This! Half a good game doesn't mean he had a good game. 14 of 26 for 236 yards, 2 TD's by the half. Then he went 7 of 12 for 50 yards in the second half. Watkins had 9 targets, 6 receptions for 158 yards, 2 TD's at the half! Then had one target for no receptions in the second half The Bills inability to do much on offense in the second half, and the defensive scheme went back to that cover over pressure crap that allows the opposing QB time to do whatever he wants. Then Ryan and his coaching staff can't manage a game to save their lives. Its an embarrassment to be a Bills fan at times. -
You had to wonder which team err, which part of the team was going to show up today? Sammy and Tyrod had a terrific first half, and then had an invisible second half. This happened so much at the beginning of the season only in reverse. Well, with Taylor anyway. Hey, at least Tyrod found the middle of the field, and Sammy Watkins at some point, and then somehow forgot how to find them. At the half, Taylor 14 of 26 for 236 yards, 2 TD's. Then the second half 7 of 12 for 50 yards, 1 TD! Watkins first half 9 targets 6 receptions for 158 yards, 2 TD's! Second half....ONE TARGET, NO RECEPTIONS!!! The defense played great against Brady even with without both Kyle & Mario, and put more pressure on Brady then he has seen the last 7 years. Then changed up the defense again to the non pressure cover crap that has allowed most every QB they played against pressure free passing games. Back to being 29th in sacks, pressures. The penalties by the stupid players showed up again in this game, and the players were only able to hold back for a few games before breaking bad again. 9 for 91 yards. This game reminds me of the loss at Oakland last year...with better coaching this game could / should have been a win! No worries though because Rex Ryan is under contract for 5 mill per for another four years
-
You see, its because of the last 15 years that I can become emotionally detached at this point in the season simply for the reason that we all saw so many, many mistakes by this new coaching staff all year long. I mean WTF, it takes 8 games to get the penalties under control for two games, and then they rear their ugly head in a game that has a playoff ramification. The defense plays great for the first time in ten games, and finally puts great pressure on the opposing QB only to go back to what stunk for the first 9 games. The offense fails to have the QB throw over the middle or get the ball to their primary receiver for most of the season, and when they finally manage to do those things...the other bad things pop up again in penalties, bad defensive scheme. While others are so always filled by that Buffalo Bills eternal optimism. I'm now a wait and see type of guy. I don't feel bad for them because they have been suckered enough by Brandon to know better. The people I feel bad for are the Pegula's who were sold a goods by a snake charmer to the tune of 25 million over 5 years. In that sense I feel badly for all Bills fans that they are still having to endure another mess of a team, and for who knows how long. More years of missed playoffs ahead.

Yea, only four more years to go on Rex's contract. 2020 playoffs!

Bills at Chiefs 1st half thread
Nihilarian replied to voodoo poonani's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
wow, Bills O finally using SAMMY like they should ! -
Exactly! The Bills haven't had a quality head coach since Marv Levy, Wade Phillips, and just because the team is paying Rex Ryan 5 mill per it doesn't make him a quality hire. However, if you look at Colin Kaepernick he started to stink while Roman was still the 49ers OC. So, while Greg Roman might have the ability to build an excellent running attack (provided he has the talent at RB, and on the line) he looks to leave something to be desired in the passing game. Why can't Tyrod Taylor throw more often to Sammy Watkins? That's like obtaining McCoy, and then handing the ball off most of the game to Boobie Dixon. Constantly using Watkins as a decoy is simply lame when you have a player with that much talent, and choose to throw to Chris Hogan more often instead. Also, why does Taylor have a problem throwing over the middle, or why is he avoiding doing it?
-
While I partially agree with that statement to a point because it does come down to evaluating the talent. It also comes down to finding the right guy to fit the system you are running, or for the most part the typical prototype pocket passing QB. Some teams want a west coast type, or one that can run the spread, pistol or option. Look what happened this year when you take a prolific pro in Peyton Manning and put him into a play action offense over his shotgun fast read scheme. It doesn't work very well, and can take time to learn to play differently. Its also important to pick the right GM first! Who then picks the right head coach, and if you don't have those two it really doesn't matter who you draft at QB because they probably won't succeed. An example might be Pagano vs Arians
-
I think everyone was expecting playoffs, and to have the #1 defense in the NFL. The latter has been the biggest letdown, and until this past week it looked so UN Rex Ryan like! Penalties were a huge problem until week 8! Will this trend continue or go back to ultra stupid? Special teams coverage units, and kick return units stink to high heaven. it took 10 games to fix the defense, and we don't know if that was an anomaly or will they continue to bring the heat? Sammy Watkins still not seeing the ball enough each game! what does it say about an offense that refuses to utilize a player that coast the team 3 draft picks, and two number ones? The starting QB won't throw over the middle So it looks like there could be lots of "fall guys" depending on how this team finishes the season. Currently the 5-5 Buffalo Bills after the loss to NE went from the 5th seed in the playoffs to the 8th seed, and out of the playoff picture behind (5th seed Pittsburgh 6-4) (6th seed KC 5-5)( 7th seed Houston 5-5). The Bills need to win a bunch of games to keep up with a red hot KC, and hot Houston. The Jets are also 5-5, and hot on their heals are the Jags, Phins, Raiders at 4-6. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/standings/playoffrace
