Good to hear from you, Bill. What happens when you shut down run first teams running game? It basically shuts down the entire current Bills offense. We saw this last year in that Tyrod had difficulty in taking over the offense with his arm when the run game sputtered. Conversely, when the run game was working well last year it allowed the passing game to work well too. I also feel the offense missed Hogan and his ability to get that first down. McCoy rushing 16 carries for 58 yards, a 3.6 YPC AVG Taylor rushing 5 carries for 11 yards, a 2.2 YPC AVG Reggie Bush 3 carries for 4 yards, -1.3 YPC AVG doing his Spiller impression Even with a Healthy Sammy at 110% it still isn't going to open up the offense that much IMHO. This year's offense reminds me of Chan Gailey's five wide sets with only Stevie Johnson as the only decent receiver... only Stevie was better at finding that seam in the defense. The fewer the really good receivers out on the field the more difficult task it is for the one good receiver to get open. Plus, with Tyrod's limited experience he usually needs to see the receiver open before he throws it. Then there is my favorite complaint about the offensive line with three quality players and two duds on it and with nothing but scrubs as backup players. A more solid offensive line would help the Bills move the chains with the ground game. Remember that Lions game? In Tyrod's defense. It's really not his fault if he looked rusty as hell after not playing most of the preseason as did Sammy and the rest of the offensive starters. Rex Ryan was so worried about getting his few star players injured in preseason that they didn't get enough playing time to be cohesive. Lastly, I'm pretty sure the Jets will get a long look at the Bills-Ravens game tape and will copy what they saw the Ravens defense doing. Not to mention that the NY Jets defense managed to sack Andy Dalton 7x and the Bengals have a solid O-line. I'm kinda dreading watching what will happen to Tyrod and the Bills offense on Thursday night. I miss your few thoughts post, Bill. But, if you feel better with fewer thoughts on this current coaching staff, FO then go right ahead and not think too much about them. I'm sure others will pick up the slack as the losses keep coming.

Watkins: injured or just trying to leave the Bills?
Nihilarian replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yikes! The New York Daily News' Manish Mehta reports Sammy Watkins (foot) "could be shut down for several weeks" because of "severe discomfort" in his surgically-repaired foot. X-rays taken after Sunday's game did not show a new break, but Mehta reports it remains possible he is shut down for the entire season. It is also possible he is able to manage the pain and continue playing. His status moving forward is completely up in the air, but at this point, it seems unlikely he plays a full 16 games. With the Bills hosting the Jets on Thursday, Watkins should be considered questionable at best for Week 2. http://www.rotoworld.com/headlines/nfl/341328/report-sammy-watkins-could-be-shut-down?ls=roto:BUF:topheadlines -
While the Bills defense looked very good in the season opener against the Ravens and it was the offense that let the team down. Let's not forget how great the defense looked last year in the opener against the Colts and then crashed and burned against the Patriots the very next week. I think the Bills have the NY Jets number so I think the defense should play well against the Jets again on Thursday. The offense will again be a concern because of LT Glenn's ankle injury. That Jet defense was able to sack Cincy QB Andy Dalton 7 times and the Bengals have a very good offensive line. It makes me shudder to think about what the Bills offense will look like in the game. Going to take a few more good games by this year's defense to convince me that the coaches will put in max effort into every game plan and against every opponent. We should know more after the Cardinals game.

Looking at how quickly TT dumped the ball off to the RB's at times it could have been nobody open and no time to wait for someone to break open. We already know the Bills line right side isn't very good and how bad the backup O-line players are from watching that Lions game. LT Glenn went out in the 2nd QTR. Teams stacked the box on Buffalo last year and Taylor would break a big run to loosen up the defense and in this game, he had 5 runs for 11 yards which is a 2.2 YPC AVG. On another note, the NY Jets managed to sack Bengals QB Andy Dalton 7 times and they have a solid O-line. I don't even want to think what will happen to TT on Thurs.

Sorry, but I'm still going to miss Hogan

JAG in Buffalo in a run first offense. 2 catches for 56 yards and a TD in the first half on the road with the backup QB throwing to him. I gotta wonder how he will do when Brady starts throwing to him. I think Tyrod missed 7-11 today. -
Were we the worst team playing on Sunday?
Nihilarian replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
and they had 7 sacks against a good Cincy Oline... Dolphins gave the Seahawks all they could handle in Seattle. NE beating the Cards in Arizona too. Jets, Cardinals, at Patriots, at Rams, 49ers, Patriots and at Seattle all before the bye week. Really hope the offense does better. -
"It was almost a year ago, in early January, when the Buffalo Bills called Rex Ryan back for a second interview for their head-coaching vacancy. Team president Russ Brandon was so impressed that he told owner Terry Pegula not to let Ryan out of the building." http://www.espn.com/blog/buffalo-bills/post/_/id/22828/playoff-promise-among-rex-ryan-statements-that-will-likely-prove-false

all three according to the super-homers and kinda why I was hoping for that football czar to be hired to take away the option of hiring football people by nonfootball people.

SSDY The offense was supposed to be the strong point of this team. But if they don't play in preseason because the coach is afraid they will get injured then there is no cohesion. The offensive line stunk it up pretty badly in my view.

Why no deep shots today Mr. Roman?
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't put all the blame on the offensive coaches when the line didn't do it's job in protection or run blocking. I put more blame on Rex Ryan for being afraid of getting his starting offensive players injured so they sat a lot in preseason and looked very rusty. 160 yards of total offense and so many dump off passes I thought it was Trent back there for awhile. Taylor passing 15 of 22 for 111 a 5.0 avg. McCoy 16 carries for 58 yards = 3.6 YPC avg Taylor Rushing 5 rushes for 11 carries = 2.2 YPC avg Reggie Bush 3 rushes for -4 yards = -1.3 YPC avg Pretty tough to do your job as an NFL QB / RB when the offensive line doesn't do their job. -
Good Lord!

Although TT was the QB the fault is not all his. The O line stinks & the run game stunk too. McCoy 16 carries for 58 yards=3.6 YPC avg Taylor had 5 carries for 11 yards = 2.2 YPC Reggie Bush 3 carries for -4 yards =-1.3 YPC Blame the GM for crappy depth on the line! Not so good players behind Watkins! Blame Rex for sitting his starters in the preseason when they clearly needed the work. Blame Roman for a crappy offensive game plan.

Just got back from the game, in person observations
Nihilarian replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bingo! When the coaches are afraid of the offensive starters getting injured so they don't play much in preseason then there isn't much team chemistry the first few games. We already knew the backup O-line players stink because we got allowed to witness it in that last preseason game in which the starters sat out. I also think that Tyrod missed 7-11 out there today as it sure didn't look like anyone downfield was open due to all the check down passes. I don't know that I'd blame Roman for Rex's being afraid of getting players injured in preseason. Lastly, what bothers me is the clear lack of solid offensive line depth and quality receiving talent behind Watkins. 0-1 -
Tyrod Taylor to Bills' Fans: "We're Ready"
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No need to panic just yet. When the starters don't get to play much in preseason they will look rusty. I'll start to worry after week three if they still look this bad. -

Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
TT was doing his version of Trent Edwards today with all the dump offs to the RB's. This tells me not much was open downfield. Guess the Bills did miss Hogan today... It looks like the offense was very rusty and probably because they didn't play much in pre season. Not ready to panic just yet! -

This is what happens when the coaches are afraid to play the starters in pre season and they come out rusty. Losing Glenn didn't help the offense 160 total yards of offense so far...yikes! -

The only thing I can think of is when you don't let the offensive starters play a lot in preseason then they have a lot of rust to work off in the first few games. -
