I kinda got the impression from the start of the 2015 season (after that first Colts game) that Rex Ryan's heart just wasn't in coaching anymore and he was coaching to be fired in Buffalo so he could sit back and rake in his five year 27.5 Million contract while doing as little as possible. Let's face it, that his 2015 scheme for many games was nothing like what we have seen in the past with Baltimore or the NY Jets defenses. That week two Patriot game was the biggest indicator that something was up when he didn't blitz at all and had his secondary playing a prevent type defense in being five to fifteen yards off the Patriots receivers from the start of the game. It's like he purposely tanked the defense to get fired. I also think that how Rex was fired kind of reinforces this idea in that he called the owner and talked it over while basically saying if you're going to fire me then get it over with! This take comes from remembering what Al Davis and Ralph Wilson used to do with certain head coaches. If they wanted to fire a head coach but didn't want to pay him the remainder of his contract they would ask him to fire all or part of his coaching staff and if they refused they had reason to break the contract on grounds of insubordination. Davis did this with several coaches, Mike Shanahan comes to mind and Ralph Wilson did this with Wade Phillips who refused to fire his ST coach after the music city miracle. In a few games over the last two seasons we Bills fans did see some very quality defensive coaching and it was very easy to notice the defense was outstanding. Like that Patriots 2nd game in which Brady was under extreme duress and screaming at his O-linemen on the sidelines. For being 31st in sacks that year the Bills managed to get a heavy pass rush on Brady on 50% of his dropbacks. Both Miami and Jets games the Bills defense played very well and in the last game of the season to knock the Jets out of the playoffs the defense really put their foot on Fitz's throat without Gilmore and Kyle Williams. Holding Fitz to 16 of 37 for 181, 2 TDs, 3 INT's. Either he had it planned to tank it or he just didn't care to put in the effort it takes in film study and the building of a proper game plan to defeat the next opponent. All I know is I want a coach who would give up a kidney rather than lose a single game and it isn't just about the desire to win. The man must also have the smarts to be able to outcoach the devil himself in the AFC East division. Chuck Knox was like that! How many men like that are in the NFL and why would they want to come to Buffalo to be under Whaley, the owners and Brandon.

Schefter says decision is made - Tyrod is gone
Nihilarian replied to Virgil's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
"Mouse" Davis had Kelly using his "run and shoot" offense in the USFL and Ted Marchibroda is the one I credit in fully developing Kelly as he is the one who taught him to call his own plays on the field. I also credit Miami HC Howard Schnellenberger for running a pro style offense and he brought in Earl Morrell as QB coach. The one thing Kelly was great at from the start was running that 2 min drill and so when Ole Ted had Kelly run the no huddle it was like the 2 min drill all game long. Man, I miss those days when the Bills had an elite starting QB! -
Drafting a QB, learning from the past
Nihilarian replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The problem is that it generally takes a few years of actual playing experience before you know what you have in a QB. I keep bringing up Drew Bees as an example because he was benched in his second year of playing because he was stinking it up so badly. The Chargers even went on to draft a QB #1 overall in 2014 because Brees went 2-9 the year before with 11 TD's, 15 INTs. Now, we all know and see what a talent Brees has become and I would have to think that if anyone on the planet had seen what he is capable of the last 13 years they never would have traded him away In San Diego or used that 2004 #1 pick on a QB which was Eli Manning and they traded him to the Giants for Phillip Rivers in the first place. http://www.foxsports.com/nfl/story/new-york-giants-san-diego-chargers-eli-manning-philip-rivers-trade-2004-120915 What bothers me is the Bills scouts missed on EJ and so many other QB's over the years. The most recent miss was with Derek Carr in 2014 along with so much all pro talent in that draft. The Buffalo Bills current team doctors, trainers, scouts should all be fired as far as I'm concerned! -

Where do you guys keep getting this Chris Polian stuff from? In an interview, while he was still open to being that senior adviser for Buffalo, he stated would hire AJ Smith as his GM and not his son. What kind of Bills fan would not want the man back in control of the Buffalo Bills who stated that he loves the Buffalo Bills would like like to see them return to dominance in the AFC East. Basically saying what all Bills fans feel and that is hating on the Patriots! Bill Polian is in the NFL hall of fame for building not one, not two, but three NFL teams into playoff powerhouses within two years. The man knows how to pick an NFL QB and hire the right head coach, not to mention player talent. Jerry Hughes was his last #1 pick in Indy before the current Indy stooge at GM gave up on him. "He is right of course. Even with an elite QB the team won't succeed without a great coaching staff, HC, OC, DC, ST coach and quality players at every position." Those were my words and look at the better playoff teams as they have quality coaching staffs and rosters. Over the past 17 years, the Bills have managed to find a gem or two for coaches, players and a big reason for all the losing is because they haven't been able to build a competent coaching staff or roster! Nor have they found that man at the top who can put it all together. -
We don't know who will be the HC, OC, DC, special teams coach or the starting QB. So, kinda tough to make arbitrary decisions right now. Besides, who's on first!

I watched the interview on NFL insiders on ESPN and Bill Polian was also there giving his input. Both basically saying that the long term answer at QB isn't currently on the team and that Tyrod is a bridge QB. Polian also went on to say that the org needs a football man at the top making the right decisions and keeping the team headed in the right direction and that man isn't there. He already turned down the job so he isn't saying that just because he wants the job. He is right of course. Even with an elite QB the team won't succeed without a great coaching staff, HC, OC, DC, ST coach and quality players at every position. Who is going to find them as the current GM has already taken part in the last few hires! Then, Doug Whaley was so fixated on making EJ succeed that he failed to see other talented QB's the last few years. Derek Carr comes to mind. He thought EJ was the guy so he spent two first rounders on a WR when the team still didn't have it's franchise QB. Which trumps all other positions. Plus, the team still has holes in a few areas. I get the impression that Tyrod won't be in Buffalo this season too. -
Have folks already given up on Cardale?
Nihilarian replied to eball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Inaccurate isn't the word I'd use ... due to his arm strength the ball goes way off course at times, like hitting a reporter 20 yards out of bounds off course. Right now he doesn't have happy feet simply because he hasn't been hit much by NFL defenders and that will change as play time goes on. Another concern is how careful with the ball will he be during a game when things aren't going well for the offense and the OC keeps calling pass plays. There was a real reason he was benched his senior year at OSU and it remains to be seen just how he develops. This developmental process all depends on his supporting cast and if Whaley will ever fix the RT position or get some quality receivers that can play a full 16 games. If Doug Whaley is smart he will pay Tyrod and ditch EJ and allow Cardale to be the backup while drafting another QB. OR dump EJ, Tyrod and bring in Jay Cutler or Tony Romo and let Jones be the backup while drafting a QB. I dunno about Lynn as HC either as 30th in the NFL in passing yardage the last two years isn't very good despite the good rushing numbers with Greg Romans playbook. Teams need to be balanced to win in the playoffs. -
While the Bills roster has been closer to the playoffs than it's been in quite a while. It's still not good enough with holes at many positions, S, SS, WR, RT! Whaley let Chris Hogan leave and didn't replace that lost talent with anything close and this when he knew that Watkins would still be recovering from foot surgery. Let's not forget that Doug Whaley wasn't the one who vouched for the all pro LG to be signed in Buffalo as that was Rex Ryan. It wasn't Whaley who wanted to sign Tyrod Taylor as it was Rex Ryan again who wanted him from his time with the NY Jets. Where would this team be talent wise without Incognito and Tyrod? Bills fans don't recall how poorly Cordy Glenn and Eric Woods looked before Richie arrived and helped elevate both their games. It's going to take more than a talented coaching staff to get this team into the playoffs should Whaley dump Tyrod Tayor.

Didn't you hear? Russ Brandon has turned it all over to Whaley...in terms of accountability. Meaning that in the next two years if the team still isn't winning more than losing and not in the playoffs all the blame is ALL on Whaley's shoulders! And yet, the owners will have the last say in who ultimately gets hired and who do you think is still advising them? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/01/03/russ-brandon-still-looms-over-bills-football-operations/ Nothing on the Buffalo Bills has changed in any way shape or form except Whaley gets all the blame and will get fired should the team not succeed. Then, Jim Monos gets hired to replace Whaley and becomes Brandon's new yes man! The ONLY way this thing gets blown up and Brandon will be shown the door is if the team goes into the toilet at 4-12 or worse and even then Brandon will probably dodge all responsibility. Previously I didn't want the SOB gone from the team, just away from the football side. Now I realize that this man is a such a selfish bastard that he refuses to allow the owner to bring in a team president of football operations to help build a super bowl contender because it would mean he would need to give up some power. Let's hope that at some point Terry wakes up from Grima Wormtongue's spell and cleans house!

AP John Wawrow interview with Terry Pegula
Nihilarian replied to Reed83HOF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What a mess. The owner fires the HC and doesn't let the GM have a say in the matter...so he is left in the wind to explain to the media The GM benches the starting QB and doesn't give a reason to the HC... so he is left in the wind to explain to explain to the media I have doubts about any solid head coaching prospect or coaching assistant wanting to be involved in this mess of a front office. Yep, Terry says the team isn't far off... which is exactly what Buddy said in taking over the team in 2010! In Buddy's first year as GM the Bills went 4-12. Meanwhile, between then and now the 49ers hire Harbaugh and go to a SB only to fall to 2-14 from listening to a stupid GM. -
Doug Whaley angry that Rex got fired?
Nihilarian replied to Estelle Getty's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So, what you are saying is that Terry Pegula has become another Jerry Jones only without ever having the benefit of Jimmy Johnson to win a super bowl or Bill Parcells to help guide him as GM. Why not just fire Whaley and announce Terry Pegula will be the new teams GM? -
Doug Whaley angry that Rex got fired?
Nihilarian replied to Estelle Getty's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not angry that Rex got fired! Just angry that nobody had told him that Rex had been fired or that they were going to fire him. Apparently, Whaley wasn't involved in that decision which seems so very odd because every other team in the NFL (even the Cowboys because the owner is the GM) allows their General manager to hire and fire the head coaches. On another note from PFT. "It also seems that ownership may have disregarded Whaley’s position on hiring Ryan two years ago, especially since Whaley responded to a question regarding his recommendation on hiring Ryan by saying, “I will not get into that.” http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/01/02/doug-whaley-creates-impression-he-has-little-power-or-influence/ Then Terry Pegula decided to speak, http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2017/01/02/terry-pegula-insists-theres-no-dysfunction-with-the-bills/ What a dysfunctional mess! -
Pegula's do not know how to run a football team
Nihilarian replied to USABuffaloFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
He tried! The thing is when Polian was asked by the media how he would start to fix the Bills Polian stated he would start by bringing in ex-Bills director of player personnel and ex-GM of the Chargers AJ Smith. Which meant Whaley would be gone. You can imagine what uproar this caused between Whaley and Brandon now scrambling to make sure they save their jobs. Later when Marrone walked away he told Polian going back to Buffalo was a waste of time on his way out the door because the people in the Bills FO have been backstabbing him. Right now they only people that this owner wants to listen to are Brandon, Whaley. The NFL even advised hiring a senior NFL football man to help them run the football side of the team and Terry didn't listen because Brandon is dug in like an Alabama tick -
He was thought to be involved in the murder of his ex-girlfriend and I believe he wasn't in the clear of those charges until after the draft. It was thought that because he was so good he would wait until the 2016 draft where he would probably be a early rounder and he decided not to wait.. I can only suspect Buffalo probably lowballed him on the money and the Cowboys made him a very handsome offer. This is exactly right as Whaley clashed with Marrone in a screaming match in the offseason over the roster and more recently wanted Tyrod benched to see what Cardale Jones could do at QB despite the Bills having a shot at the playoffs. Let's not forget that Tim Graham reported that Marrone spoke badly of Whaley, Brandon as he was leaving the Bills. Whaley has had a hand in selecting the last few Buffalo Bills head coaches and none has worked out so far. However, let's just discuss the last hire. How does a GM who knows anything about what he is doing give his okay to hire Rex Ryan? A 4-12 Head coach, really? All anyone in the Buffalo Bills FO needed to do was rewatch the two Bills-Jets games during 2014. The two blowouts by the Bills. 43-23 in the first game and before the second game Rex Ryan told the NY media his team would play 1000% better and yet they lost 38-3. In two games the Buffalo defense sacked Jets QB's 11 times, 5 interceptions, 7 turnovers! Anyone who saw those games could see that Ryan had lost his players. Think about it a minute! Does anyone really think that whoever Whaley hires will be able to challenge Bill Belichick for the AFC East division? Should the Bills hire Lynn will he still have the 30th passing offense in the league? It sure looks like a disconnect between Whaley and Tyrod Taylor right now...so who will be the starting QB in 2017? Did anyone besides me watch that last game this season against the NY Jets and see how sloppy the play was, how bad both EJ and Jones are? If Whaley should hire Lynn or anyone else how many games do the Bills win next year?

Pegula's do not know how to run a football team
Nihilarian replied to USABuffaloFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Oh, but he hasn't! How many years of futility have the Cowboys seen with Jerry as GM? They last won a SB in 1995 and have been to the playoffs 8 times in the last 20 years under 5 different Head coaches and in every instance, it's usually one game and done. Now recently Jerry has been allowing his sons to help him make decisions like taking an OG in the first round of the draft when Jerry wanted to draft Johnny football and then he went on to complain about not getting his way for a year. You know what both Robert Kraft and Jerry Jones have in common? They both hired Bill Parcells to coach their team, to pick his brain on who to hire as his replacement and setup a proper coaching structure. The real problem with this team is the people that helped the late owner Ralph Wilson run his team to make a profit above all else are still with the team and basically have advised these new owners that they don't need a Bill Parcells at all! Because they are there and they want to continue to stay in power. The closest thing Terry Pegula has guiding him in the NFL is an ex-baseball / marketing guy who has made mistake after mistake in the football operations since Marv Levy retired in 2007. And even recently he led the searches for the last few head coaches and was directly involved with the hiring of Rex Ryan as was his yes man, Doug Whaley. Now this year Whaley is supposedly leading the coaching search with the owners having the last word in who gets hired. Now, who do you suppose they will consult with on who to hire? Yeah! Nothing has changed! -
There isn't much I give Rex Ryan credit for, but his asking the team to sign Richie Incognito was one of them. Incognito was sitting out the 2014 NFL season because no team would sign him and yet the Bills fielded the very worst offensive line for most of that season. Whaley could have brought him in any time and he didn't! http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/bills/2015/02/07/richie-incognito-rex-ryan-contract-jonathan-martin-miami-dolphins/23040525/ Rex Ryan also was chasing LSU OT/OG La'el Collins who had a troubled past and no team wanted to draft him. Rex wined and dined with him to attempt to get him to sign with Buffalo, sadly Collins chose Dallas instead because he would have been a huge upgrade at RG like he has been for the Cowboys who signed him. Ryan wanted to build a big powerful line to run the ball with power and that is exactly what the bills offense has done the last two years. On another note, Tyrod Taylor was also a player that Rex Ryan wanted to be signed by Buffalo. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/rex-ryan-hand-picked-qb-tyrod-taylor-wanted-him-with-jets/o

NFL Football... "It's a violent game that I personally don't think humans are supposed to play." 2013, Colin Brown was an Andy Levitre replacement that lasted around 4 games before being benched and released because he was so bad. Sam Young was another wasted roster spot as he came in the game for Brown on a couple of series and allowed a sack and hits so he also was benched and released after 4 games. That year Whaley signed Doug Legursky to be the backup center and because all the other OG backup players were so bad... Legursky became the starting LG for most of the season and needless to say this guy was the worst graded player on the Bills line and didn't return for another year. The Bills were exceedingly lucky that Legursky lasted an entire season because the rest of the backups that year were right off the street. 2014, Signing OG Chris Williams for 5 mill guaranteed to see him play only three games before being released by the team because of a back injury! Kraig Urbik moved to LG and Erik Pears played RG in 2014. Glenn, Urbik, Wood, Pears, Henderson was ranked as the very worst offensive line in the NFL for most of that season! This with basically three rookie QB's on the roster! 2015, Rex Ryan vouches for OG Richie Incognito and the Bills sign him to see a talent that elevates the play of the two players on either side of him. So, after two years the Bills finally replace Levitre with a quality player at LG. It was also Rex Ryan that wanted Tyrod Taylor in Buffalo. The bottom line was that Whaley allowed the team to go into the 2013 season with EJ, Lewis and Tuel and no veteran QB on the roster and no QB coach on the team. The only person these young QB's had to learn the NFL ropes from was Nathaniel Hackett who was an NFL rookie OC himself. After drafting Sammy Watkins, Whaley decides to trade for WR Mike Williams ( for a 6th)and trade away WR Stevie Johnson (for a 4th) because while Johnson didn't always run precise routes he was usually always open. Kyle Orton could have really used a WR that was always open. Sammy in his first season battling injuries all year long was used a lot as a decoy. WR Mike Williams contribution to the team, 8 rec for 142 yards, 1 TD. In 2014 the Bills traded for RB Bryce Brown for a 4th round pick. Browns contribution to the team 2 game starts 36 rushes for 126 yards, 16 receptions for 116 yards. The trade for Jerry Hughes was initiated by the Colts GM who wanted the last first round pick of Bill Polian off the team and Whaley was just incredibly lucky that the Colts called him. Wanna talk incredibly lucky? How about that Whaley offered CJ Spiller a decent offer to stay in Buffalo and like the fool that he is Spiller instead went to New Orleans... thank the good lord! Wanna talk more good luck? Eagles HC Chip Kelly offering to trade LeSean McCoy to Buffalo in the first place. This worked out great because the team has such difficulty in finding star RB talent in the draft. Skipping a lot of other things. The Watkins trade in dealing away three draft picks, two number ones for a WR when the team still didn't have it's franchise QB! If Whaley or his scouts actually knew what they were looking at in regards to college talent the Bills could have stayed at the #9 pick in 2014 and drafted all-pro LBer Anthony Barr, all-pro OT Taylor Lewan, all-pro WR Odel Beckham Jr, all-pro DT Aaron Donald, all-pro OG Zack Martin, all-pro LBer CJ Mosley, all-pro S Haha Clinton-Dix, all-pro CB Jason Verrett and then traded up in the second round for all-pro QB Derek Carr. After the last four seasons of such ineptitude, I have no idea how or why the guy still has a job as an NFL GM. Although, EJ certainly has been happy that Doug Whaley has kept his job all this time.

Landry Jones available, winning for Pittsburgh
Nihilarian replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What Jones did in OT on that last drive to win the game against Cleveland was impressive! But you also need to take into consideration that the Steelers have a much more talented surrounding cast, coaches, players, scheme. 24 of 37 for 277, 3 TD's, 1 INT. when the Steelers starting RB was only averaging 2.8 YPC against that Cleveland defense that really wanted to win. Another note is that Pittsburgh was playing their backup players. If Buffalo were to go to a mostly passing schemed offense and wanted a solid young pocket passer I'd give Jones a long look over Glennon. Of course, If I had a full choice it would be Kirk Cousins hands down. -
