Chiefs trade Alex Smith to washington
Nihilarian replied to Castellar's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Bills fans are daydreaming over Cousins and when they wake up it will be Bridgewater, Bradford or AJ McCarron. -
So, what teams need QB in 2018? Cleveland, have the #1 overall and Cousins wants to win so he won't go here. Alex Smith? NY Giants, have Eli and might draft a rookie QB. Denver, will draft a rookie QB and sign a vet for a bridge. My guess is Bradford or Cousins. NY Jets, McCown a FA and the will draft a rookie QB in the first. could go after Cousins but he won't go there. Washington, Cousins due 34 mill with Franchise tag - Alex Smith done deal Arizona, Carson Palmer retiring. Will draft a rookie and are looking for a veteran bridge. Keenum? Buffalo, TT is gone. will draft a rookie and are looking for a bridge QB. Minnesota? They have 3 FA QB's on their roster= However, they lost the NFC Championship game due to QB failure of Keenum. They might keep one of their FA QB's Jacksonville? Blake Bortkes was the 11th best QB in 2017 (yardage) They might be looking to upgrade the QB position like Buffalo is doing. Eli Manning? Man O man this offseason should be interesting. Whoa, Alex Smith to Redskins

I seriously doubt the Bills are even thinking about Cousins due to the enormous amount of money he will command. Shoot, you might as well go for Garoppolo or Drew Brees. Even Keenum is going to need a truck to haul his money after this year. I'm thinking more along the lines of AJ McCarron (providing he is a FA), Teddy Bridgewater or Sam Bradford. Perhaps Alex Smith as a bridge for now.

I'd like to point out that I didn't say it was "all his fault" and I think the OC/ play calling had a lot to do with his regression as well as the run game not working very well at the start of the season in some games. This is a run-first offense that needs the run game to be effective so the offense can work properly and the defense can stay off the field as well. When the run game stalls it really hurts the offense because Taylor is not the type of QB that can always carry the offense. If you look back at stats from the loses you would see a trend. Carolina, 23 rushes for 69 yards, Cincy 24 rushes for 82 yards, NY Jets 22 rushes for 63 yards, Saints 15 rushes for 69 yards and so on. In the first half of the season that 2016 #2 in rushing attempts,#1 in rushing yards, #1 in rushing TDs, #1 in YPA was team was around 20th in 2017 midseason. The 2017 Buffalo Bills still finished the season #4 in rushing attempts and #4 in yards mostly because LeSean McCoy can make tacklers miss over the play of the run blocking of the offensive line which was bad most of the year. The only player with a positive run blocking grade was Incognito. That 2016 Bills offense that was #1 in rushing TDs, #1 in rushing yards per attempt went to #15 in TDs and #14 in rushing yards per attempt. I'd say that's a big dropoff and reason as to why TT didn't do as well.

Arm strength has nothing to do with why Tyrod has problems and those are that he needs to see a receiver wide open to throw to him. You seem to forget those deep throws to Watkins that Taylor made in his first season under Greg Roman. Taylor is a starting caliber NFL QB. Although, just not an elite top 10 NFL QB. Taylor regressed this season under Dennison and as I suspect he didn't do much to develop Peterman either or he wouldn't have thrown 5 INTs in the first half of a game. Someone told McD that Peterman was ready to start and clearly he wasn't at all. Then again, I understand that Peterman was nicknamed "nervous Nate" by his teammates in college for some reason. Taylor has probably lost his starting job in Buffalo and it's kinda a shame because I happen to think Bills new OC Brian Daboll could have helped him develop more as he will surly help with Petermen's development.

Trading for a Carson Wentz
Nihilarian replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
QBs Cousins, Brees, Garopplo, Keenum, Bridgewater, Bradford, McCown, Matt Moore and even Fitzy are all free agents. and there are more but not better than TT so they will remain unnamed. The Bills could even trade for a veteran QB like Alex Smith, Eli Manning, AJ McCarron. The Jags might even release Blake Bortles who with a proper OC should be able to straighten out his problems. There is a chance the Bears release Mike Glennon. The Bills will have their choice of bridge QB and possibly a top ten or top four pick at QB should they desire to move up. I would think that Sam Darnold and Josh Rosen will be gone by the four pick but if not they could trade up to four with Cleveland to beat out the Broncos and Jets. OR if they prefer Josh Allen they could wait a bit to move up to 12 with Cincy to get Allen and throw in Cordy Glenn as the Bengals need a LT. We will just need to wait and see what the future holds as McD and Beane will get their man I'm sure. -
You can't take one performance from one game and think that will be what this kid plays like in the NFL. Everything is about projection and scouts need to see every throw, every situation in all their games and not just the highlight film. The senior bowl is just a fragment of what scouts look at to make an evaluation. Consider this, that NFL QB Matt Cassell never started a game in his four years in college at USC and in his entire college career amassed a total of 33 attempts for 20, 192 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT. The 40th rated QB that year. He was a backup QB to Carson Palmer and couldn't beat out Matt Leinart for the starting job. The Patriots drafted Cassell in the 7th round and sat him to develop. The point is that if developed properly even a kid that didn't play much college FB and couldn't even beat out the starting QB/Heisman Trophy winner went on to have a better NFL career than said HT winner.

It's not just NFL networks Daniel Jeremiah's who thinks Allen is a top 15 first round pick. "Kiper's draft ranking: No. 1 QB and No. 4 overall prospect. From Kiper's Mock Draft 1.0: "His numbers aren't impressive, I know. But the NFL is all about projection, and he has a high ceiling. Coaches want to work with Allen because he has all of the tools." "McShay's draft ranking: No. 3 QB and No. 16 overall prospect. From McShay's Top 32: "He has an elite arm and frame and can make every throw. The postseason process will be key for him." http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2018/story/_/id/21836489/2018-nfl-draft-quarterback-class-preview-background-scouting-reports-pro-fits Then there is this, https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2017/12/22/16776200/josh-allen-2018-nfl-draft-wyoming-quarterback

Some of you are way off in saying this kid is a 3rd or 4th round pick. NFL networks Daniel Jeremiah, DJ has Allen at his 14th best player overall. "I came into the week with Mayfield ranked one spot ahead of Allen on my board, and it remains very close between those QBs. I'm not ready to call that race just yet. Allen has some rough edges that he still needs to smooth out, but we got a glimpse on Saturday of what it looks like when it all clicks for him. He makes throws that no one else can make." http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000909727/article/daniel-jeremiahs-top-50-prospects-for-2018-nfl-draft The Bills need that kind of arm in those swirling winds at Rich/Ralph Wilson/New Era stadium. So, perhaps he isn't an instant starter and he will need to sit and develop for a season. At evaluation 13/14 he certainly can be had by Buffalo without giving up the farm. Cincy at 12 needs an OT and the Bills could move Glenn in the process. Perhaps trading TT to Denver for some value too. Also, Bills fans need to remember exactly how EJ's development was mishandled by Buffalo with no QB coach, no veteran QB on the roster and the only guy teaching him the NFL ropes his first year was an OC who had never been an NFL OC previously. EJ stated he learned more from simply watching Kyle Orton prepare for a game then he ever did under Hackett.

This team has far, far to many holes to give up a bunch of draft picks for any one player at this point. Losing center Eric Wood just gave the team another hole to fill. What so many fans seem to forget is that if these new people in the scouting dept, FO know their stuff they can find an elite franchise QB without giving up the farm for him. DeShaun Watson was a #12 pick and a kid like Josh Allen with that cannon arm could fall to 12 and a trade with Cincy with Glenn might be a smart move as they need an OT. So, the Bills might not have to give up so much to move to 12.

It was obvious to me that this team wanted to see what they had in Tyrod Taylor and see if he could fit what they wanted for a QB as the man does have the wherewithal to be a starter in the NFL, albeit not quite good enough. I think that Saints game clinched what this FO thinks of TT. Some of the offensive coaches stunk and the primary reason as to why former Bills OC Dennison now works for the NY Jets. I'd like to see Juan Castillo as the run game coordinator/line coach follow him to NY because the rush offense really wasn't very good for most of the season with basically the same players. I dunno, perhaps McD feels there is hope for the guy considering what he did for shady in Philly. The biggest dropoff from what I saw was in the run game and that was the primary focus of the offense. If the run game doesn't work for a run first team with a limited QB then the offense will usually fail. Yea, sure McCoy finished 4th in yards which was better than 2016 @ 6th, or 2015, @12th. But I attribute that more to McCoys ability to make tacklers miss over the line blocking. From PFF, Buffalo ranked 22nd. https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pro-ranking-all-32-nfl-offensive-lines-by-average-grade-week-5?utm_source=cj&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=cjaff "However, the issues come with run-blocking, where basically everyone but Incognito has a poor grade so far. The Bills run more outside zone plays than anyone in the league, leading the NFL with 76 attempts, but they rank just 17th in yards before contact, averaging just 1.06 yards on these plays." Like I said, most of the talking heads had this team tanking/rebuilding this season and yet for the first time in 17 years they made the playoffs. I'll reserve my complaining about anyone until next year at this time. Unless of course, it's about Juan Castillo EDIT: on another note Bills fans need to realize that neither Woods nor Watkins would be worth the money they got or will get from the Rams with a QB like Tyrod throwing to them. Even for the Rams with Geoff throwing, Woods was the 38th best receiver in the league this year.
-
Except the current coaches recognized that the players on the roster didn't fit the schemes/system they wanted to run so they traded away some and brought in some they wanted. This was supposedly a tank/rebuilding year after the team traded away certain players/stars and yet because they had the players they needed the team finished 9-7 and made the playoffs. Why can't some people be happy with that?
-
Nobody complains more than me about a bad FO, HC, coach or whatever and this regime after one winning season somehow found a formula for success. The team was exceedingly lucky to even make the playoffs despite this being a supposed "tank" season after trading away some team stars. 17 years man, 17 years and we didn't need to wait more than one season! These men have a vision as to what they want to build and IDGAF how they do it or get it done as long as playoffs and contending for the AFC EAST is in the future for this franchise. What I see when the smoke cleared from this past season is the Bills dumped an often injured crybaby at WR who would have needed to be paid somewhere in the 14 mill per range and that could get to 16 mill per if they need to tag him. The Bills finally found that big, tall red zone target that the team has needed in forever at 6'5'' 243 in KB and all I have is praise for this FO so far. The next step is finding that franchise QB that will actually be in the top 15 in yards, stats instead of the bottom 15 every season.

I think you may have it all wrong as it was Doug Whaley and his scouting staff were the people that failed to recognize quality QB talent. That is a big reason as to why Whaley and that scouting staff were all fired and replaced. Beane wasn't even hired at that point and McD had to rely on Whaley and his scouts. As I understand how things went it was Whaley that set up the draft board and McDermott made the actual selections. I also think we need to wait and see what these new scouts do/say that might actually know what they are doing vs the old crew that didn't even make notes when watching players. Also, new Bills GM Beane explains his process http://www.newyorkupstate.com/buffalo-bills/index.ssf/2018/01/brandon_beane_explains_what_it_would_take_for_buffalo_bills_to_trade_up_in_draft.htmlzxsd Just a thought that if the team does trade up for a QB and misses on that choice it will set the team back a few years. OTOH, the right selection should set the franchise for a decade.

No need as this could be a first. All those teams could be looking for a QB this year and that is nearly half the teams in the league. Count'em up as that's 14/15 teams. I suspect that there could be as many as six or more QB's taken in the first round this year and those six could be in the first fifteen depending on what transpires in free agency. Check out what a writer for the NFL thinks 12 teams with QB needs this year, Cleveland, Giants, Broncos, Jets that's four in the first ten. Four In the next 10, Bengals, Redskins, Cardinals, Chargers and the Miami FO has stated that they will go BPA and should that player be a QB they will take him. It has also been noted that the Ravens are looking at QB's. In the next ten, Bills, Saints, Steelers, Patriots and should the Jags move on from Bortles. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000855915/article/2018-nfl-draft-order-and-team-needs-nos-2132

Same, as he is gone by pick six IMO. #1 Cleveland=NEED, Sam Darnold #2 NY Giants=NEED, Josh Rosen # 3Indy #4 Cleveland #5 Denver=NEED, Josh Allen #6 NY Jets=NEED, Baker Mayfield - #13 Washington- Cousins gone=NEED, Lamar Jackson -#15 Arizona=NEED, Mason Rudolph The Bills will need to trade up to # 3 or 4 to get a QB not named Rosen/ Darnold. The Miami Dolphins FO has even stated that if the BPA @ #11 is a QB they will take one. Besides Miami, the Ravens, Chargers, Steelers, Saints, Jags, Vikings, Patriots could all be looking for a QB. On a side note, just think the Browns offered the Patriots one of their first rounds picks for Garappolo and they turned them down.

Bills analytics department fired/restructured
Nihilarian replied to ricojes's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills FO was so blazingly stupid with stuff like this under Brandon. He probably watched the movie moneyball and decided that would be good for the Buffalo Bills...then the team went out and spent 100 million on super Mario to drive up ticket sales. It wasn't about building a championship team to actually compete against the Patriots as it was more all about selling tickets like a huckster. Looking back it was his own stupidity that did him in, with his contact with HC Doug Marrone. If he hadn't given him that buy out clause then the Bills might still have Marrone, Whaley, Brandon leading this franchise. On another note, now that Andrew Luck will have Josh McDaniels as his HC in Indy and DeShaun Watson is back healthy with the Texans I highly doubt the Jags repeat in getting into the playoffs for 2018. -
Well, considering Darnold will probably be the first QB off the board I doubt the Bills will land him. Anything anyone says from a team standpoint is most likely just smoke because they don't want their real intentions known to anyone. As far as the ZERO interest in Mayfield, Jackson, and Rudolph can't be believed because if one of those guys is there when they pick they will take them. I get the idea they might even trade up for Mayfield.

It certainly didn't help EJ that he had no QB coach in his first NFL season. Nor did he have a veteran QB on the roster to learn from and in fact, the only teacher he had was Nathaniel Hackett as his OC was someone who had never been an NFL OC in the past. Not to mention the offensive line the kid started behind was one of the worst in the NFL. I firmly believe that coaching is everything and EJ was put in a situation that was almost imposable for him to achieve good success. As far as Allen goes it's his lack of top accuracy to around 50% and his low TD to INT ratio that worries me. Some scouts love the guy and think he is a top ten pick because of his physical traits and other say he is a 2nd to 3rd round pick because of his inaccuracy. Gonna be interesting to see what everyone says after the senior bowl and combine.
-
From what I gather this FO is going after another bridge QB who could easily take this team further in the playoffs. Cousins #7 could be a guy who could lead them to the SB next year. Alex Smith #8, Case Keenum #12 and even Blake Bortles was #11 all fit that mold. Perhaps its just me, but I don't see an elite franchise QB from day one either (just yet) in this year's draft class and I also don't see a player worth giving up the farm for to move up to the top five. Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Mason Rudolph, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield, Lamar Jackson, Luke Faulk. The Only guy I think would be worth a move up for is Baker Mayfield due to his 70% accuracy and although he is currently graded as the third/fourth best QB I don't see him getting by the Broncos at 5th or the NY Jets at 6th.

The Time is Now McBeane!
Nihilarian replied to NastyNateSoldiers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well said and what I was attempting to convey. The only rookie QB I would think this team would go after is Mayfield because of his 70% accuracy and I feel the same way about taking a QB later on while using those first picks for quality starters. I trust the process with these men and that is something that I couldn't say over the past decade.
