I think that is exactly the reason they hired QB guru Pat Shurmur, to find out if Eli is done or not. Looking back at the start of the 2017 season when the roster wasn't decimated by injuries and he had ODB, Brandon Marshall, Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram all healthy receiving. The team still started out 0-5. Eli looked like he has lost a step. Granted at the end of the 2017 season the Giants had 31 players on IR. They sure didn't start out with that many injuries and they stunk it up just the same. Like I said, I do think they are morons should they pass on on a QB with that #2 pick (Rosen) only to find they will need to replace Eli in three years or less. Then perhaps they will need to give up three first-round picks to get a QB who may or may not develop into a franchise QB. Kinda foolish when they are sitting in the catbird's seat this year.
-
THIS! Cousins has done something Tyrod dreams about and that is 11 game winning drives in the 4th quarter since 2015. He is also in the top 5 in completion percentage and passing yards since 2015. Signing Cousins for 30 mill per would limit the free agent deals but this regime has stated they want to build thru the draft and with signing Cousins they could do just that with two firsts, two seconds and a third all on players to make this team better this year! "IF" the Bills are smart enough to sign Cousins it makes them an instant serious division rival for the Patriots and a super bowl contender. Why even think about drafting a "maybe" at QB who may or may not develop into a franchise QB when you have one sitting right there. This is McDs Peyton Manning moment!
-
The NY Giants FO are morons if they trade away that #2 pick and don't take Rosen themselves. So, let's say they wait until next season or the year after to go for a top QB. Then they will need to give up the farm for a player sitting right there for them. I don't see the Giants being this foolish and knowing Eli is so near the end of his career.

Joe Buscaglias take on the QB situation
Nihilarian replied to Seanbillsfan2206's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Please explain the love for another running QB who needs a bunch of developmental time to become an elite NFL pocket passer. I've seen a bunch of draft sites that list him as this years 6th best QB prospect and is some mock drafts he isn't even listed as a first-round pick. RG3 anyone? I'm hoping the Bills get one of the top three or four in this years QB class. -
I doubt that Cousins will hold the ball as long as Tyrod Taylor did in 2017 at 3.01 seconds on average. As for the line, all the Bills need to do is finally upgrade that right tackle position and they will instantly improve the lines entire grade. They could use a new RG and added depth all over the line. Dunno why Bills fans are so enamored with Peterman who was a 5th round pick... anyone else recall Brian Brohm? He was a second-round pick and he did squat.
-
This years draft class is supposedly one of the very best in years for QBs. So why in the world would any of the top10 teams that need a QB or will very shortly need a QB not take one of the top four? The NY Giants? How often can they expect to have a shot at one of the top two QBs in a draft without needing to give up the farm to get one? They would have to be seriously stupid to not select a QB in this year's draft. You can take it to the bank that the Browns, Giants, Jets, Broncos will all take a QB in this year's draft unless of course one of them signs Kirk Cousins. Shoot, both the Colts and Dolphins had serious injuries to their QB and should they want to go in a different direction then they also might go after a QB if one is still there that they like. There are possibly six QB that could be taken in the first round this year. Darnold, Rosen, Allen, Mayfield, Rudolph, Jackson all could go in the first this year. On another note, let's revisit the 2012 NFL draft. The Colts took Andrew Luck #1 overall. For the #2 pick overall, the Redskins gave up three #1s, (a 2012 #1 pick), (a 2013 #1 pick), (a 2014 #1 pick), and a #2 in 2012 all for RG3 to the Rams Miami took Ryan Tannehill with the #8 pick Cleveland took QB Brandon Weeden with the #22 pick Denver took Brock Osweiler with the #57 pick, second round. Seattle took Russell Wilson with the #75 pick, third round. (Buffalo traded up to take TJ Graham under Nix with the 69th pick) Philadelphia took Nick Foles with the 88th pick, third round. Washington took Kirk Cousins with the 102 pick in the fourth round. Arizona took Ryan Lindley with the 185 pick in the sixth round. Green Bay took BJ Coleman with the 243 pick in the seventh round. Indianapolis took Chandler Harnish 253 pick in the seventh round ( Mr. Irrelevant) Washington thought they couldn't go wrong with RG3 with all the hype he had as an even better prospect than Luck by some scouts. That Heisman trophy winning running QB never evolved into an elite pocket franchise QB. This is probably what Buffalo could face in trading up with the 21st, 22nd picks to the #2 spot this year if Darnold isn't taken #1 overall.
-
So do I and in a big way. Keenum is the product of Vikes OC Pat Shurmur who also elevated the play of Nick Foles in Philly. This was Keenum's best season and it helped that the Vikings also had the #7 rushing attack, #1 defense in both points, yards allowed. While I don't think he will fall on his face next season if he stays in Minnesota because of that run game, defense and standout receiving corps. The Vikings offense will be getting Eagles QB coach John DeFilippo for their new OC and we don't know if he will be as successful as Shurmur was with Keenum. Anyway, Keenum might just turn out to be a one year wonder. Like Fitz had in 2015.
-
The simple fact that most teams didn't see the difference between Peyton Manning and Ryan Leaf is the one and the only reason to never tank. Andrew Luck is a once in a decade player and might be the only exception. But then Carolina, Buffalo was in perfect position to draft either Cam Newton or Andrew Luck in the 2011 NFL draft and Luck decided to stay in College for his senior year. Neither team tanked that season as it was just the way things go. If you have a quality GM and scouting, staff the team should never tank as you will find talent in every round. Conversely, if you have a bad GM, scouting staff you are Cleveland and have had 26 QBs since the Patriots have had Tom Brady starting. Just think the Browns picked QB Spergon Wynn in the 6th round before Tom Brady...and he never lets them forget it.

Jeez, just take a look at Bowles last two seasons as Jets HC after starting out 10-6 in 2015 with Fitzpatrick at QB who threw for almost four thousand yards and with a defense, a top 10 unit it looked like the guy might do okay as HC in the NFL. Now looking at his last two seasons of 5-11, Fitz went 3-8 and that Jets defense was 28th in points allowed in 2016. This year the Jets changed OCs away from Chan Gailey and went with ex 49er WR coach John Morton who is clearly worse. The 2017 Jets were 28th on offense with McCown who played pretty well on a bad team that had a poor run game. That defense that was so good in his first season was 22nd in points allowed, 25 in yards allowed and 25th overall. Bowels is a defensive minded coach who was the Arizona DC for two years before getting the Jets HCing job. With John Morton as OC, a bad run game, a bad defense...Kirk Cousins isn't going to save his job for him. That is if Cousins is foolish enough to sign there. Musgrave hired by Denver in 2017 to be the QB coach he was elevated to OC after Mike McCoy was fired during the season. Denver won two games with him as OC against the Jets and Colts. My take is Mike McCoy is a much better OC than Musgrave. However, we will see this season. The simple fact is I just don't see your points and you don't see mine. This will be my last post in conversation over this.
-
In regards to Denver, they fired a good OC in Mike McCoy during last season only to replace him with their QB coach who IMO is not an upgrade in OC Bill Musgrave. I've read that it had more to do with who was picking the QBs over who was calling the offensive plays. The QB's on their roster do stink and they even went back to QB Brock Osweiler who went 0-4. Denver HC Vance Joesph was on very thin ice at the end of last season and should the team start out poorly again this season I suspect he will be fired and replaced during the season. My take is the only reason he still has a job is that Elway knows he screwed him with bad QB's. My take is Denver will offer Cousins the most and sign him...and they will still not take that division in 2018. That coaching staff will hold them back unless some things change. I think both Denver, Jets will be replacing their head coaches after this upcoming season no matter who their respective QB is going to be, They both fielded bad 5-11 teams in 2017 and I doubt that will change much. The Jets were also 5-11 in 2016, as they have a bad defense and offense and from what I see a bad coaching staff too. Yes, Buffalo has a lot of work this to do this offseason to improve their roster. The Bills just squeaked by in getting into the playoffs last season with a 9-7 record. They needed help from the Bengals beating the Ravens on a last-second miracle play. Still, they showed well in that Jacksonville playoff game! They showed that they really were only a better QB away from beating the Jags and moving on. I think with an upgrade now at offensive coordinator in Buffalo* and an upgrade at the QB position this team will contend for the AFC East division this season.
-
I don't believe I am. I'm just looking at the scenarios and thinking which one would I want to go to as a QB. Fair points on Denver to a degree, although I feel Cousins is going to look at the overall record of last year of the team which was 5-11 which Is something I believe is very, very important. What happened with other coaching staffs in other years won't matter. He will also be looking hard at that current coaching staff. They switched from a west coast scheme which is what Cousins was in, in Washington, and last year went with Erhardt-Perkins scheme. I can tell you that the scheme switch and offensive line tire fire will weigh heavily. What might sell Cousins on Denver is John Elway though.Thinking on it Cousins isn't Peyton Manning who can call his own plays and he needs a solid offense to fit into to feel comfortable. Both Arizona and Minnesota changed coaches too. The only team I would deem more of an interest than Buffalo that might make a play for the guy is Jacksonville and they have stated they are sticking with Bortles. While everyone thinks it's all about the money, Cousins stated he wants to win so Cleveland is not even in the picture. The NY Jets also have enough cap space to sign him and yet again 5-11 with a not so bad QB. That is unless he was lying and is going all in for the money. My take on this entire situation is that the Washington FO/owner has never thought of Cousins as a true franchise QB as he was a lowly 4th round pick. More of an afterthought with RG3 getting all the money and hype.I think he wants to win more than anything to show the Redskins what they missed out on. If this Buffalo FO really wants Cousins I think he will be amenable to sign in Buffalo, unless of course, he wants Garoppolo type money. And yes, JMHO.
-
I think this regime jettisoned some big money contracts to clear space to sign one of the top FA QBs and they still might not be done. (Glenn, Taylor) Meanwhile, I also think that while they will trade up, I don't see them going up for a #1 or #2 because the cost would be more than they want to give up in picks. I kinda even doubt they want to go up to #3 or #4 to get one of the top two should they fall. However, I do think they will trade up to #10 Raiders, #12 Bengals spots to get one of the top four QBs.
-
Denver went 5-11 last year with a new coaching staff and wouldn't be all that enticing as they are more than just a QB away from being a SB contender. As for Arizona new HC Steve Wilks was the Panthers DC for only one season and an assistant coaching DB's the last 11 years. Both regimes haven't proved a thing as to if they can field a winning team. Looking at the NY Jets last season they had a decent QB in Josh McCown that threw for nearly three thousand yards with 18 TDs, 9 INTs. The Jets have bigger problems than just a QB as their coaching staff stinks and I kinda doubt Cousins would even help that team. I would think Cousins might look at Buffalo and see a good coaching staff, good defense that should improve and most importantly a top RB, rushing attack that will help take pressure off him. The thing is I highly doubt Buffalo would want to pay him 34 mill per should Washington franchise him and he signs. Even if things don't go that far Buffalo only has 31.4 in cap space and it would take some creative wrangling to get Cousins under contract with the Bills. They might be more interested in Bradford, Bridgewater or even Foles.
-
Cleveland is on a level all to themselves as no player usually ever wants to play there anymore. That team hasn't been relevant since the 1980s and Marty Schottenheimer. In the past under the late owner Ralph Wilson, the FO couldn't even get certain coaches to even interview with the team much less coach in Buffalo. That was as little ago as in this past decade. In the 1970's Buffalo got a national bad rep for bad air, bad weather, no jobs and most of all the love canal. The way Wilson got Chuck Knox to coach in Buffalo was to make him one of the highest paid in the league. Most of that is now forgotten. Most everything bad from the past has changed with new ownership and most of the today's players don't care about a small market as they would rather live in a family atmosphere over a party town. The only thing that players would now think twice about playing in Buffalo is the weather and if you ask any of the 90's Bills players they relished playing in the snow in Nov, Dec, Jan. Right now with this coaching staff, owner this team is more enticing than Bills fans think. I think Cousins would pick Buffalo over the NY Jets, Denver, and Arizona as those coaching staffs didn't have a winning season in 2017.
-
I think you have it all wrong and are possibly thinking about how players used to think of Buffalo with the first owner. This franchise is not even close to what it was with the last owner even though he did sign Mario for 100 million. With Wilson, you needed to overpay to bring some elite players to Buffalo. Making the playoffs this past year will be huge with players thinking of now coming to this city. Yes, it's a small market and so is Green Bay! Buffalo is not Cleveland which has never even been to a super bowl. Think of it, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, and Jacksonville have never been to a super bowl. Cleveland just went 0-16 to tie Detroit for the worst record ever and hasn't had a winning record in 10 years. Head coach Hue Jackson is 1-31 at Cleveland over two seasons and how the guy kept his job this year is beyond me. Going back to the OP post. I might be in the minority here but I feel giving up so many draft picks to get one of the first two QBs might be a fool's errand simply because they all have warts. None of these players are graded to the level of an Andrew Luck. Darnold, with his (11) turnovers it leads to concern about hand size and how well will he play in cold weather! Rosen, his durability with his shoulder, concussions and his personality as teams will really want to spend a lot of time talking to him. Mayfield, with his height issue and it didn't help to see ball batted down at the line in the senior bowl. Plus, he has some character issues. Allen has the highest upside with a rare combination of size, arm strength and athletic ability. BUT, he has some question marks in his poor play against top competition. He did play on a bad team last season and his receivers dropped a lot of balls. His play in the senior bowl really knocked down a lot of the bad marks against him. Now, Mel Kiper has Josh Allen going #1 overall to Cleveland and Todd McShay has Darnold #1, Rosen #2 to the Giants, Mayfield #5 to Denver, Allen #6 to the Jets. Should the NY Giants go QB with that 2nd pick I think it kills this entire discussion. Buffalo might need to trade up with Indy #3 or Cleveland #4 to get Allen or Mayfield.
-
Rosen worries me with his concussions as he needed to sit out the Cactus Bowl because he sustained two so close together in 2017. There are only so many concussions a person can sustain before their NFL career is over. The kid also had shoulder surgery his sophomore season in which he only played five games and missed the rest of the season. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few months and how the scouts evaluate the QBs with so many teams QB needy and so many QBs in this draft that could be picked in the first round. The future for Bills fans could be very bright indeed if this new GM, scouting staff know their stuff. Darnold, Rosen, Mayfield, Allen, Rudolph, and possibly Jackson. While the #1 Browns, #2 Giants, (even the #3 Colts if Luck's shoulder is still in question) #5 Broncos, #6 NY Jets, (#11 Miami if a top QB is still there they like)#15 Arizona, #21 Buffalo. A possible Six first round QBs and six teams or more with a strong need.

NFN, but the Bills players would steal calls and signals...just not to the extent that BB used to do at times. This is a big reason as to why the Bills defense always seemed to have Miami QBs Dan Marino's number in so many games. They watched enough film and discovered that he would have many tells in his game by his body posture and actions before a play. They also played the Dolphins enough that they learned the play calls. Anyway, the point I was attempting to make for that first SB was that for most of the season the Bills were a run first team and while teams couldn't stop that no-huddle passing offense they also couldn't stop Thurman Thomas's cutbacks. Miami QB Dan Marino used to complain that they didn't have a RB anywhere near the talent of Thomas. Bills QB Jim Kelly called all his own offensive plays and he came out throwing in that first super bowl. I dunno, perhaps he wanted the MVP. Kelly went 18 of 30 for 212 yards while only handing the ball off to Thurman 15 times who went 15 attempts for 135 yards, 1 TD. Gee, whats that average out to be in YPC? Had the Bills ran Thurman Thomas more often from the start I think it would have been an easy win. Lets also not forget that Bill Parcells was a stout believer in having a pounding, wear you out running game and that Giants team had the ball for 40:33 min vs 19:27 for Buffalo. The NY Giants ran the ball 39 times for 172 yards and wore out that Bills speedy, undersized D line. They held the ball by running it down the Bills throat which kept that highest scoring Bills offense on the bench. Let's also not forget that safety by Buffalo in which Bruce Smith had the Giants QB by the wrist and he had the ball in that had in the end zone. Instead of a fumble and TD. Somehow Hostetler managed to curl up around the ball to prevent a turnover. For all their brilliance Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells nearly lost that game as the game was lost on a Buffalo Bills FG miss that went wide right. The final score was 19-20. Bills kicker, Scott Norwood was known for not kicking well on grass or for long field goals. Still, that FG was long enough...just wide right!
-
Big disagree on Tally as he would make all those tackles on the RB's that would run right by Bruce Smith while he was on his way to the QB. The guy was asked to make the tackles on that right side while Smith rushed the QB and he did! The guy was a playmaker doing a mop-up job and he made the pro bowl in 90, 91. 1990, 123 tackles,(which led the team) 4 sacks, 2 INTs, 1 FR 1991, 117 tackles, (only Conlan had more) 4 sacks, 5 INTs, 4 Forced Fumbles, 2 Fumble Recoveries. 1992, 106 tackles, (which led the team)4 sacks, 2 FF 1993, 136 tackles, (which led the team)2 sacks, 3 INTs, 1 TD, 4 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries.

From what I can recall the weakest part of each super bowl loss was all the injuries except perhaps against the NY Giants in that first SB. Against Denver, in that AFC Championship game, the O line was so decimated that the TE Pete Metzalaars needed to play tackle. What a lot of fans forget is that Thurman Thomas was about 70% of the offense in those years in running and catching the ball out of the backfield. Sure they had the highest scoring offense in 1990 but look at the numbers 425 passing attempts vs 479 rushing attempts. The point here is that QB Jim Kelly called his own plays and they came out throwing against the Giants in that first SB. OC Ted Marchibroda set up the old Redskins "counter trey" run scheme and Thomas made his cutbacks brilliantly. Ole Ted used to be the Colts head coach and taught Bert Jones to call his own plays like he did with Kelly. Later on, with the Colts, it was Ted Marchibroda who used Marshall Faulk like he did with Thurman Thomas and the result was another HoF RB. The thing is, that just before the Redskins super bowl the Colts made it known that they were interested in hiring Ted back as head coach and he did indeed depart for Indy right after the game. Looking back, I asked myself if he put 100% in that offensive game plan considering he was going to be a division rival head coach. Yes, back then the Colts, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots, Bills were all in the same division. Back then the Bills had that juggernaut offense that ran the no-huddle/ run and shoot and not many teams could contend with how fast the offense got to the line and ran a play. This limited defensive substitutions and had the opposing defense gassed very quickly. The Bills had an elite S&C coach in Rusty Jones and when they would travel to Miami in 90-degree weather it was the Dolphins who were all gasping for air vs Bills who were superbly conditioned. (I disliked Mularkey for getting rid of Jones) As for the two Cowboy loses 52-17, 13-30 The Boys just had a younger, stronger better team. The Bills defense was 27th in yards given up in 1993 that year and the Bills no longer had OC Ted Marchibroda. Lets also not forget that Bill Owner fired Bills GM Bill Polian after that 1992 season. In 1990 the Giants had just shut down Joe Montana at Candlestick in the NFC championship game and held that HoF QB to 18 of 26 for 190 yards. The Niners also only ran the ball 11 rushes for 39 yards. The Giants had the best defense in the league that year. In 1991 the Redskins finished the year 14-2 and they had the highest scoring offense in the league that year, #1 in PF, #4 in yards and their defense was almost just as good #2 in points allowed, #3 in yards allowed. 1992-1993 the Bills faced a 13-3, 12-4 Cowboy team that was the best of the NFC with several HoF players. On a side note, In 1993 the Bills beat the Cowboys in Texas stadium week two, 10-13. In my view, there were a lot of reasons the Bills failed to win a super bowl. Coaching, injuries, lack of quality depth at certain positions and they faced some really strong NFC teams those years. It seemed to me that after that first SB those Buffalo Bills teams were all beat up just winning the AFC the next three years.
-
To me, it wasn't just what Schwartz did with the Eagles pass defense. Brady has seen it all and usually beats a blitz by making them pay with a big play. In the SB Schwartz didn't blitz and only rushed the front four all game while rotating those D linemen. Most teams the Patriots played against they are owned in the fourth quarter because their defense was gassed trying to get to Brady all game. This didn't appear to be the case with the Eagles and in fact finally got a sack, fumble on Brady at the end. I know Foles did a great job and got the MVP. However, In my view If Brandon Graham doesn't get that strip, sack most likely Brady marches down the field and scores while winning the game and getting that MVP.

Josh McDaniels Withdraws from Colts' HC Job
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This maybe goes back to the hate between the Colts vs Patriots with Manning, Brady vying for the AFC Championship year after year. Robert Kraft stepped in and probably told McDaniels that he would take over as the Patriots HC next year. Thus keeping that high scoring offense with Brady intact this year for continuity. Greedy bastards want more rings and to keep the lock on the AFC EAST going as long as they can. Anyway it shapes up I know I wouldn't want to work for Jim Irsay either -
Bills 2018 Mock Draft Watch
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Yeah, Kiper stinks. Although, McShay also has the kid going early at #6 to the NY Jets (if they don't sign Cousins). I still think the kid doesn't last past #5 with Denver. I think as time moves forward to the combine, pro days and draft Josh Allen will climb those draft charts as scouts really look at what he did this past year and the talent on the team he was on. I can't wait to see the value Mike Mayock puts on the kid. In any event, I don't see Allen getting past the Cards at #15. So, if he is still on the board at #12 when the Bengals pick I'd think the Buffalo Bills would be smart to move up to get him. I also think Miami might start drooling over him with their #11 pick if he is still there. -
Bills 2018 Mock Draft Watch
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Allen scared me too at first glance when seeing the 50% completion percentage vs the 70% for Mayfield. Then I took a closer look at the teams surrounding both players and Allen played on a very bad team this past season with receivers that dropped a ton of balls. The guy was running for his life in games against superior teams. Then I watched him in that second half of the senior bowl and he disproved everything bad the scouts were saying about him. He threw the ball with accuracy and touch and he shed sackers like Big Ben does. I came away thinking that this kid should be a top-five pick in this upcoming draft. Mel Kiper has Allen listed as the first player overall to be selected in his recent mock draft. http://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2018/insider/story/_/id/22134110/nfl-mock-draft-2018-mel-kiper-first-round-pick-rankings-draft-order -
I agree. A lot of Bills fans just don't realize how important offensive coordinators are to a QB. Foles went 1-5 under OC Marty Mornhinweg in his first year in Philly. Foles went 8-2 under OC Pat Shurmur in his second year in Philly. Foles went 8-8 under OC Pat Shurmur in his third year in Philly. ** the offense wasn't the problem as they were #3 in PF, #5 in Yards. The defense, however, was near dead last. Foles went 4-7 under OC's Rob Boras, Frank Cignetti in St Louis. QB Case Keenum was also there that year and went 3-2. Foles went 1-0 under OC Brad Childress with Andy Reid calling plays. Foles is not the type of QB that you can send anywhere and be successful. When he has a quality OC and knows the scheme he plays brilliantly.
