Bridgewater to Sign with the Jets
Nihilarian replied to MAJBobby's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe not. Perhaps the Eagles have told the Bills he will be available near/around training camp. Or maybe it was the Colts who were interested in Foles and want to trade Luck. -
Veteran QB: It all comes down to FOLES / MCCARRON!
Nihilarian replied to IgotBILLStopay's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It could be that Indy was the AFC that offered the Eagles a #2 pick for Foles. Won't it be a B word for all those teams that signed a warty free agent QB if Andrew Luck becomes available near training camp? -
#1 Cleveland, #2 NY Giants, #3 Indy, #4 Cleveland, #5 Denver, #6 NY Jets. All want a QB and Buffalo may need to go up to #2,#3 to get one of the top three. Buffalo looks to be filling the holes on the team with free agent signings and still might need to sign a bridge QB. Most of the good ones are already gone.

What if the trade up to #12 is just a ruse?
Nihilarian replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why not? Gotta free up cap space to sign a big money free agent QB and still be able to get other free agents. Cousins is still waiting to make visits and some teams might not want to drive up his price if they can help it. Anything the Bills are saying at this point is smoke. Like wanting to draft Josh Rosen or moving up into the top three. I think they move up but the QB they actually draft will surprise. -
Josh Rosen has "Bust" written ALL over him.

PICK 5 Baker Mayfield - QB, Oklahoma PROJECTED TRADE WITH BRONCOS. The Bills are willing to make a big move (giving up their two first-round picks this year plus a 2019 second-rounder) to get a quarterback after Sean McDermott falls in love with Mayfield's fiery demeanor. Denver is a willing trade partner after addressing the QB spot in free agency. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000917695/article/fourround-mock-draft-allen-goes-no-1-bills-cardinals-trade-up -

I don't care for Rosen or Darnold the top two QB's in this year's draft. Rosen with his durability concern with two concussions this past season and past shoulder surgery and if that isn't enough he doesn't have a very powerful arm. -
With the 12th Pick Bills select
Nihilarian replied to USABuffaloFan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Josh Allen played in a pro-style offense and yet he needs time to develop no question. Most draft pundits have been saying that Rosen is ready to start from day one. 2. Which QB is most ready to start right away in the NFL? Kiper: It's Rosen, who has played under former NFL offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch and has elite physical tools. -

I feel the Bills will move up this year. Just not into the top five because I think If they were going to the number two spot they would have used Glenn to trade up with the NY Giants who are in dire need of a quality tackle. However, they might go up to that number four spot if the right guy for them is still there. Both Rosen and Darnold are ready to start from day one...I just don't like either one. I prefer Mayfield and Allen in which Mayfield can start from day one, Allen might need to sit and develop a bit. -
The "We have too many holes" argument
Nihilarian replied to ColdFront_USAF's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sam Darnold is supposedly this year's best QB...with his elongated throwing motion and turnover issues, I just don't see it! Trading up into the top three seems like a fool's errand to me as the cost would be too much, 3000, 2600, 2200 for those 1, 2, 3 spots. Buffalo will only get 1580 for their first two picks and would need to give up possibly all six picks in the first three rounds. Sorry, I just can't see giving up so many draft picks for one maybe QB in Darnold, Rosen who have some major warts. OTOH, I can envision the Bills trading up to the 7th, 8th or 9th spot in front of Miami who might also select a QB. Cleveland, Denver, NY Jets, Arizona, and Buffalo are the teams truly desperate for a QB in the draft this year. One of those teams might sign Kirk Cousins and not the Vikings so things could swing in the Bills favor so they can land one of the top four. Still, I think if they wait until the 20th, 21st picks those top six might all be gone. I think they must trade up... just not into the top five. -
Could 2018 be the 1983 QB Draft
Nihilarian replied to BuffaloButt's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's shaping up to look like that 83 draft class in a sense. Although, this would mean a player like Andrew Luck who was a once in a decade type player would be a positive first overall and nobody else even close and that simply isn't happening this year. Then in 83 if Jim Kelly hadn't injured his shoulder so badly in his senior year that he needed pins in it to hold it together...he was told by the doctors that he would never attain full throwing motion or he might have given Elway a run for that #1 overall spot. Then If Dan Marino wasn't suspected of smoking pot and being a hard party animal he might have gone much earlier in the draft also. The rumors about him really flew that year. There is no question that six QB's could be taken in the first round this year and all of them have warts, unlike Elway who was also signed by the Yankees to be a baseball player. Sam Darnold, with his smallish hands and his turnovers, has the fact that only one of all the hyped QB's over the years out of USC has only produced Carson Palmer. USC QB's must be good enough to keep their jobs from other QB's and are usually surrounded by quality coaching, players and for some reason that hasn't translated to being a top NFL QB. Elongated release is impossible to miss. Ball drops to his waist with forearm pointed towards the ground, pre-delivery. Windup gives defenders early clue to break on the throw. Muscle memory may not allow for release correction. Turnover total is alarming. Finished 2017 with 13 interceptions and nine lost fumbles. Has 20 interceptions over last 20 games. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/sam-darnold?id=2560057 Josh Rosen, at least Rosen has Troy Aikman and Bob Waterfield who are NFL HoFers and the best since the late 80"s-1940s has been Wade Cook, Cade McNown, and Drew Olsen. Still, this kid has durability issues in that he has very little pocket escape ability and once he takes a big hit he is usually injured. "Too casual in pocket set-up. Decision making and post-snap reads are inconsistent. Refuses easy throws at times. Arm talent and strength are below average. May need to make greater effort to drive field and seam throws. Poor career deep ball completion rate. Excess air under ball allows challenges. Lacks gun to challenge safeties with rip throws over the top. Needs better anticipation. Poor mobility. Struggles to elude early pressure. Completed just 42.4 percent of his throws when forced to move." http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/josh-rosen?id=2560059 Josh Allen, highest ceiling and cannon for an arm. Although so many are complaining about his accuracy issues in college and he could also be the biggest bust. If anyone looks like the next Jim Kelly, Big Ben it's this kid at 6'5'' 233 who shakes off tacklers and is a gunslinger. "it's rare to find a quarterback with such a low college completion rate become a successful pro." Although, Matthew Stafford, Jay Cutler and Tyrod Taylor all improved their accuracy in the nFL. Baker Mayfield, who looks like the next Drew Brees, Russell Wilson and has the very best accuracy in this year's draft. This kid can do it all with a great arm. His only issue is that he is not quite 6'1''. A touchdown machine in college. Although, "Spread quarterbacks have had limited success as have small quarterbacks!" Lamar Jackson, "Carries spindly legs and a thin base. Slightly built for punishing hits he takes from pocket and as a runner. Must learn to slide. Lackadaisical in setup. Throws with excessively narrow base and stiff front side. Flips it rather than throws it. Makes targets work too hard. Sails throws that can end up in hands of a safety. At times, hesitates to challenge safeties in the seam. Low release point leads to tipped passes. Typically gets through reads 1 and 2 before halting progressions. Pocket awareness has room for improvement. Move accuracy on rollouts and scrambles is poor. Highly inaccurate with throws on the move throughout the 2017 season. Underthrown deep balls allow cornerbacks to play the ball. Lacks touch over the heads of middle linebackers into intermediate pockets. Turnover total still too high. " http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/lamar-jackson?id=2560053 Very erratic with throws as one looks great and the next a duck. If you like running QB's you will love Jackson! Mason Rudolph, "Over-strides at times. Rarely drives lower body through the throw causing ball to sail and float. May not generate enough velocity to beat ball-hawking corners who strangle passing windows. Field-side outs will be a challenge. Needs throws to stay on schedule. Needs to throw with better timing and placement on comeback and outs. Defaults to off-platform throws when he has time to step and deliver. Ball placement and decision making can run askew when forced to scramble from pocket. Ball will come out wobbly at times. Inexperienced as rollout passer. Benefitted from ball-winning targets downfield. Wasn't asked to get through many progressions in the offense. Has had ball security issues as a starter. " http://www.nfl.com/draft/2018/profiles/mason-rudolph?id=2559942 The Steelers look to be very interested in this kid. Hall of fame QBs? The three I like are Allen, Mayfield, and Rudolph...so those three are cursed. -
Tyrod Taylor Thanks Buffalo
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Thank you, Tyrod for doing your best, taking this team to the playoffs. Let's hope you do the same for the Cleveland Browns. Good Luck. -
I wish the guy the best in that very tough division as they not only have their Patriots type team in the Steelers they also have the Ravens to contend with... Now I only hope the Bills find their guy in the draft, free agency.
-
I loved what the kid had to say at the combine about the level of competition he faced and given his play have to think that given some time to develop he could be really good at some point.

While we are all rejoicing here.........

Good stuff for both teams and now I only hope the Bills didn't shoot themselves in the foot by drafting the wrong guy or bringing in the wrong guy as a bridge. -
Please Stop With the Watson/Jackson Comparisons
Nihilarian replied to H2o's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
To be honest, I don't like Lamar Jackson due to his erratic throwing with one great pass and the next a duck. Which will cause turnovers in the NFL. (think Geno Smith) Slightly built for the punishment he takes and with the big boys this will only get worse (think RG3) Low release point leads to passes batted down. Stops reads after one or two looks and runs. Move accuracy on rollouts and scrambles is poor and was highly inaccurate while on the move in 2017. He didn't play in a complex offense at Louisville and that transition to an NFL offense will be very difficult. Far, far too many issues to be a first-round pick in my view. The Panthers just fired their OC in an attempt to make Cam Newton more of a pocket passer. Russell Wilson is very mobile and moves around to buy time in the pocket to make throws...him I want. Another running QB I don't want and Buffalo needs a QB to play now and not take a year or more to develop. -

Kirk Cousins (59) Colin Kaepernick (59) Tyrod Taylor (50) http://blogs.ourlads.com/2017/03/16/quarterback-ball-velocity-at-nfl-combine-2008-2015/ In my view, it's not so much velocity or arm strength as it is to be able to spin the ball with a tight spiral to cut through the wind. Although arm strength and velocity both matter as to getting the ball quickly to the receiver. Hence the term "frozen rope" used to describe Aaron Rodgers throws! -
Reasons why we shouldn’t trade off our draft picks.
Nihilarian replied to Tipster19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
While I'm against trading up into the top five as that would be cost prohibitive picks wise. However, I do envision this team trading up into the top 7-10 and in front of Miami if one of the top five QB's is still there. Looking over the combine and senior bowl at this time I see that Darnold and Rosen are falling a bit and Allen, Mayfield are rising a bit. So, if this team loves Darnold, Rosen one of them just might be there at the seven pick. Me personally I'm hoping not and that Mayfield, Allen will be there after Cleveland, Denver, and the Jets make their choices. #1 Cleveland, RB Saquan Barkley #2 NY Giants, OG Quenton Nelson #3 Indy Colts, DE Bradley Chubb #4 Cleveland, QB Sam Darnold #5 Denver, Josh Rosen #6 NY Jets, signed Kirk Cousins- CB Denzel Ward #7 Tampa-trade w/Buffalo to draft either Allen, Mayfield. -
Josh Rosen is a mix between Jay Cutler and Jeff George... Yes, there is this sort of talk about one of the top 5 QB's. Allen with his inaccuracy. Sam Darnold with his small hands and far too many turnovers. Jackson with his one great throw and the next is a bad throw. Mayfield with his lack of prototypical height. Oh, and the real knock on Rosen is durability issues and is compared to Sam Bradford. He has difficulty escaping the pocket which could see him injured again and again. Yet, all five QB's will probably be gone by the tenth pick and Miami, Arizona, Cincy, Baltimore are all rumored to be in the hunt for a QB this year. So, if the Bills really want to spend this year early picks on a QB they had better do it before the 10th pick or they will be left with Taylor, Peterman and a QB out of the top six. The Steelers are rumored to be very interested in Mason Rudolph. Right now as the rumors flow Cleveland will take Barkley number one and a QB with the fourth. The Giants won't take a QB either so that means that Denver and the NY Jets will have their pick of one the top three QB's. That fourth/ fifth QB might still be there at the seventh/tenth spot should the Bills really want to grab one of those top five. This type of move up I can visualize as it wouldn't be that cost prohibitive picks wise. Moving up into the number two spot for one of those "maybe" QB's with issues would be too cost prohibitive in my view. That number two overall pick is worth 2600 and the Bills two first rounders are only worth 800, 780 each, and those two-second rounders are only worth 500, 490. That's only 2570 for both firsts and both seconds unless my math is off somewhere I just don't see a move up to the number two spot. Those two number ones and two number twos could be four viable starters for one "maybe" QB @ #2. If they do that they sure as heck better know what they are doing in terms of QB evaluation.

It's not just my opinion but almost every draft site I look at has this kid as a top 15 pick. Most every QB selected in the first round only has a 33% chance to make it and Allen is no exception. Nobody really knows which one of this years QB's will rise to the top of the class. Josh Allen happens to have an almost unlimited ceiling and if developed properly he could be another Big Ben. I simply think the fans that are down on him have no clue about what's been going on since the season ended. The scouts and draft evaluators certainly know more than the fans. As for EJ, he spent his first season developing in the NFL with no QB coach, no veteran QB on the roster and the only guy he was learning from was his OC who had never been an NFL offensive coordinator previously. EJ would later state that he learned the most from watching Kyle Orton prepare for games. EJ also started behind one of the very worst offensive lines in the league. Nobody ever took the time to help the kid with his mechanics or footwork in Buffalo and so we have a failed first round QB due to stupidity by the team.

Not anymore after the Senior Bowl and Combine. Stafford's three-year accuracy percentage in college was 57.1%. Cutler's four-year accuracy percentage in college was 57.2%. Tyrod Taylor's four-year accuracy percentage in college was 57.2%. Taylor's completion percentage in the NFL now is 62.4. Stafford's completion percentage in the NFL is now 62.0. Cutler's completion percentage in the NFL is now 62.0%. There is a real reason as to why so many draft sites have Allen in the top five to fifteen players in this year's draft. Daniel Jeremiah has Allen going #5 to Denver. Bucky Brooks has him going 11th to the Redskins. Charlie Casserly has him at #15 going to Arizona. Charles Davis has him going #12 to the Bengals. Lance Zierlein has him going #6 to the NY Jets. Chad Rueter has him going #1 overall to Cleveland. Mel Kiper has him going #1 overall to Cleveland. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000917695/article/fourround-mock-draft-allen-goes-no-1-bills-cardinals-trade-up

The OP has this whole thing all screwed up. Because if Mark Pike played in the NFL for Buffalo for 12 years and he calls that a miss then Steve Tasker is also a miss. The average lifespan of an NFL player is only three years and it's so special just to even make an NFL roster. Not to mention making the NFL roster of a 12-4 NFL team already loaded with talent. Basically, you can't compare the draft classes of playoff teams vs teams that don't even have a winning record because the chance a draft pick makes it on that bad team is far superior to that of a playoff team. Then, players taken in the first and second round should be automatic starters and if not then it's a miss. Unless that player eventually becomes a starter and plays a few years. Arron Maybin = Miss! Mark Pike Hit! Bottom line is that any player who makes a roster and starts for three years should be a hit. DB Roland Mitchell played 9 years in the NFL and even though he only started a year and a half he should be a hit as he surpassed that three-year average. LB David Brandon played in the NFL 11 years and even though he didn't make the Buffalo Bills roster he did make it with SD, Cleve. FB Jamie Mueller played for Buffalo for four years with 32 starts.
-
Wilson trusted Brandon so much he not only made him CEO right after the team hired Buddy Nix as GM in 2010. Brandon was also named team president on Jan 1st, 2013 giving the man full control over the franchise. He could have hired whomever he wanted at that point and yet things remained the same. Brandon has been actively involved in the football side of operations since Marv retired and was in those cut room meetings as recently with Rex Ryan as head coach. It was noted by Tim Graham that Russ was in the film room breaking down film with scouts. At the combine where he meets with agents about player contracts, in the draft room. It's my opinion that Brandon has a hand in every coach, GM hires since Marv left. Had the team hired a real NFL GM I highly doubt that the marketing guy is on the phone to players in cut room meetings or in the film room. Like I said, I'm just grateful that real football people are now running the football side and the result was a playoff appearance.

While Polian might not have done so great in the drafts during his time in Buffalo. There is no question that he built a playoff team from back to back 2-14 ashes in 84, 85 to a 12-4 playoff team in 1988. Polian was the Buffalo Bills pro personnel director from 1984-1985, then promoted to GM after Bledsoe injured himself in 86. What prompted Ralph Wilson to promote him was the way he was able to get Bruce Smith under contract. One of the first things Polian did as GM was talking the owner into paying top dollar for QB Jim Kelly. What also helped Polian greatly was the USFL folding when it did because Kelly was out of a job and the player talent from the USFL was available to sign. Like all pro center Kent Hull. In that first draft class of 1986, I can tell you have some things very wrong. 1st pick Ronnie Harmon played in the NFL 12 years and the first four with Buffalo. He was a RB/WR/KR and the reason why Buffalo dumped him was that potential end zone dropped TD pass in that Cleveland playoff game with :09 seconds left. Almost as bad as "wide right". and he never lived it down. That second first-round pick in Will Wolford was a future all pro at LT who played in the NFL for thirteen years. The second round pick in Leonard Burton played five years in the NFL and started four years for Buffalo. The Third round pick was a FB Carl Byrum who played three seasons for Buffalo. These men aren't misses as they ended up being making the team and contributing. Mark Pike played for Buffalo for 12 years as a special teamer. Butch Rolle played for Buffalo 6 years and 8 years in the NFL total. You have most these players as misses when they were heavy contributors to the team.
-
Ralph Wilson wasn't an invalid or in a nursing home environment until perhaps his last few years or so. We are talking about a decade here. Russ Brandon joined the Buffalo Bills in 1997 and took over an executive position in 2006 where he was named the director of non-football operations. Then he took over as de facto GM after Levy retired at the end of 2007.
