Would this regime survive a trade up miss at QB?
Nihilarian replied to Mikie2times's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
So far I really, really like what McD and Beane have done with the team all the way up until Wood, Incognito are both no longer with the team. This draft is going to be so very telling as to what their future holds for them. This franchise has not had an actual franchise QB since Jim Kelly and they haven't had an above-average offensive line since that time too. What to do, what to do? It took a godawful HC in Rex Ryan to finally get a decent starting QB and left offensive guard for the team and now both are gone. Along with the above average center and left tackle. These men are in a very peculiar predicament as to what to do first in drafting a better offensive line or franchise QB. "IF" the new to Buffalo scouts know what they are doing and Beane, McD know what they want in terms of a scheme for this new QB to run. They don't necessarily need to draft a top-five QB this year. Good to great QB's can be found in later picks you just have to know how to evaluate them. Baker Mayfield may just drop out of the top five and allow Buffalo to move up to draft him without giving up the entire farm. Then considering how bad the offensive line looks right now they may want to rethink that run-first scheme and draft Lamar Jackson later on. NEEDS, QB, WR, OT, OC, OG, LB, DT. With all those needs does it make sense to give up all the first, second and third round picks to move up into the top five and to go to #2 it will take the 2018 first round pick too. -
Josh Allen will be the best QB in draft
Nihilarian replied to BuffaloBud420's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I like Allen over Rosen and Darnold but would be happy with Mayfield too. Allen, Darnold, Mayfield were winners in college and Darnold had they very best supporting cast you can have. So while he won a lot of games you have to wonder what he would be like on bad teams like Rosen, Allen were on last year. Allen will just need some time to further develop so he needs to go to a team that already has a starting QB so he can sit and learn. JMO -
I honestly don't dislike the guy for any other reason than he was injured a lot on a bad team. The guy can't escape the pocket and his durability is a huge question mark. Then when he runs his accuracy percentage goes out the window. He played in a WCO style of offense with shorter throws so he put up some really good numbers as he had really good stats but not many wins. My take is the way this current offensive line looks the very last guy this regime should be thinking of drafting is Josh Rosen. All I can do is think of Sam Bradford who at times is as good as they come as a starting NFL QB but can't stay on the field due to injuries. I don't much care for Sam Darnold either if that helps. I also stated I like the kid as a person with the audacity to wear a fu*k Trump hat to one of Trump's golf courses. He is just a kid, a 6'4'' 218 lbs.
-
I look at Josh Allen and see a kid who was also on a bad team but managed to elevate his play enough to win games and win their bowl game. It seems all Rosen could do was get injured a lot. He also had something that Allen didn't have which was a 1264 yard receiver with 9 TDs. Manning 8-4 in his first season and won the Gator Bowl against VT. Second season 11-1, won the Citrus Bowl against Ohio St. The third season 10-2 won Citrus Bowl against Northwestern Fourth season 11-2 lost the Orange Bowl to Nebraska The Vols won a lot of games with Manning as the starting QB. I agree that UCLA was a bad team during Rosen's time there. Wrong choice don't you think?
-
Nobody back then boasted publically of being better than anyone else that I can recall. All QB's think they are the best at what they do... as they should. Kelly was no different from any of them. The difference being is that every player on the team had the guys back and they loved him. That can't be said about Rosen where it's been reported that some of his teammates can't stand him. "Rosen: “He’s the one I know the best—he’s got size, athletic tools, velocity. He’s just a mess off the field and he’s coming off the injury. He needs to grow up, but the talent is off the charts.” And yet Rosen has also showed signs of immaturity—two years ago he and some friends rearranged a neighbor’s lawn ornaments in sexually suggestive positions—and just plain poor judgment. Since arriving at UCLA he has set off a social media firestorm over presidential politics, deleted at least one provocative Instagram post and been forced to apologize to the school. The coach is constantly asking Rosen whom he wants to be: Peyton Manning or Johnny Manziel?" https://thebiglead.com/2017/05/04/nfl-scout-and-executive-on-josh-rosen-tons-of-issues-and-a-mess-off-the-field/

If Tom Brady was an afterthought, then what does that make Rosen? A guy who lost his first bowl game. Didn't even play in the second bowl game for fear of another concussion. The point still remains that Brady won in college and he did that with only two seasons of college ball. Two seasons, two bowl games, both wins. What has Josh Rosen accomplished at UCLA that makes you believe him when he boasts he can be better than Tom Brady? I don't know about you but I've had my fill of false bravado and blowhards spewing bluster and boasting of what they can do before they do it with our big mouth man Rex Ryan.
-
Seriously, Et Tu, Yolo? Dude, the guy was basically a rookie in 98! In 1998 in Brady's first year of starting, Michigan went 10-3, and the Wolverines finished 12th in the AP Poll. WON their bowl game against Arkansas! In 1999 Brady's second year of starting the Wolverines went 10-2 and finished 5th in the final AP Poll. WON their bowl game against Alabama! The entire point was that Brady was a WINNER in college too. I can only think that if he had played a full four seasons of college ball he would have won a National Championship. I happen to think winning does matter and no matter what team you find yourself surrounded by. As for AJ, he has had his time on the bench to develop so he should be ready to carry the team. Although, I don't know if any QB is going to have success this season if the team doesn't upgrade that offensive line. They traded away their elite starting LT, the all-pro LG is retiring and so is that center who was also pretty darn good. Scrubs aren't gonna cut it and particularly so should the team draft Josh Rosen like you want.

***Speculation from Brownsboard.com***
Nihilarian replied to Zerovoltz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
What would be great is if Leroi still worked in Buffalo so we would have some insight into what this FO is thinking and which, if any of these QB's might be worthy of trading up for. -
Brady had only two game starts in 96 and 4 game starts in 97. When Brady played a full season at Michigan during his junior year the Wolverines went 10-3 while WINNING the Citrus Bowl against Arkansas. His senior year at Michigan Brady went 10-2 while WINNING the Orange Bowl against Alabama! Before you say someone is leading with BS you should do a bit of research.
-
The guy wants to win 7 super bowls huh? Then why didn't he win more in college? Tom Brady, he ain't! Although, I happen to like the kid as he wore a Fu*k TRUMP hat while playing golf at one of Trumps courses. Rosen played three years at UCLA, 8-5 the first year he played in all 13 games. Lost to Ariz St, Stanford, Wash St, USC and lost their bowl game to Nebraska. He only played in 6 games his sophomore season as he was running for his life in those 6 games before a shoulder injury shortened his season. UCLA went 4-8 that year. His Junior year he played in 11 games but suffered two concussions too. UCLA finished 6-7 and lost their bowl game to Kansas St. Looking at UCLA during Rosen's time there they did have a bad defense, bad O line, bad run game. Yet one of his receivers had 1264 yards receiving, 9 TDs last year. Now looking at the current state of the Buffalo Bills offensive line without Glenn, Wood and all pro Cogs. The remaining O line players on the roster are very questionable. Drafting a rookie QB with the thinking he needs to start in 2018 would be about the most foolish thing this FO could do this upcoming season. This FO better have a plan to add some quality offensive linemen or those 5 picks in the first half by Peterman might become a weekly issue no matter who is starting at QB.

Will the 2018 Bills be better then the 2017 Bills???
Nihilarian replied to Scorp83's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Not the way the offensive line looks right now. Nevermind the QB -
Another thing that most fans don't get is that the line has to play as one unit and everyone must know everyones elses responsabilitys. Its called continuity and sometimes can take a while to properly develop. On certain plays you can't have free roamers breaking through the line all the time and they must be picked up. In this sense I don't blame Incognito for retiring after they reduced his pay because with some scrub at center his job at LG becomes that much harder. If you have quality players all across the line it becomes so much easier for each player to do his particular job. When you throw scrubs into the mix it becomes a nightmare. The line might not have gotten the greatest grades for last season but that is because of Mills at RT. The left side was pretty solid and now that is gone. Without Incognito at LG I kinda doubt Dawkins looks anywhere near as good as he did last season. The OP got it right when he said "shambles" and nobody on the current roster comes even close to an all pro level. Bills QB's will be running for their lives just like 2010 all over again. Unless that line is upgraded big time I can see another 0-8 start of the 2018 season.
-
Most fans are underestimating the impact of losing an all pro at LG will mean. His play helped both the center and left tackle to look so much better than they were. Anyone recall the last time the Bills had an all-pro OG? It was all the way back in 2003 and Ruben Brown played 9 seasons for Buffalo and then went on to play another 4 for Chicago. The man was an eight-time pro bowler for Buffalo and made the pro bowl one year for the Bears. You wanna know something else? The last time the Bills had a lot of superior players on the offensive line they were a playoff team in the late 80's, the early 90s. Previous to that they won two AFL championships with stars on the offensive line. One all pro player on a five-man line is not going to cut it either like with Jason Peters, Ruben Brown. The weakest player on that line will be exploited continuously all game long. Just like they do with Mills over and over. There is a direct correlation between having a superior offensive line and making the playoffs. Versus having an inferior line and being a perennial losing team thinking you can find quality offensive linemen in the later rounds. Sure, you can find any position in the later rounds. Drafting a top four QB with six or seven early picks looks like a fool's errand unless that line gets upgraded big time. It makes more sense to rebuild the line this year and draft a guy like Mike White and go for the QB once there is a solid team around to protect the guy. IMHO

LA Darnold Workout Speaks Volumes
Nihilarian replied to theRalph's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't get why so many Bills fans are so desperate to trade away so many picks for one of all these flawed QB's to get to #1 or #2. Rosen might be the most polished at this point but then he isn't on the same level as Sam Bradford and yet due to his injury history will most likely have a similar career. Darnold has that loopy delivery that was Okay in college but will telegraph his throw at the NFL level. Not to mention with all his fumble problems he equates to Mr. Butt FumbleTwo. 20 INTs over the last 20 games! Allen needs time on the bench to develop and if given that time he could be the next Aaron Rodgers...or not. Mayfield looks like the only QB that could be the real deal as the next Drew Brees. Jackson already has the "yips" and he hasn't even played an NFL game. None of these QB's grades like a Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford, Andrew Luck. PFF has these QB's graded thus, Mayfield Darnold Rosen Rudolph Jackson Allen I can see the Bills moving up from the #12 spot to get a QB. Perhaps to that #4 spot. -
Trouble in the Talley household?
Nihilarian replied to Kirby Jackson's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Most NFL fans have no understanding of the consequences of what extended playing in the NFL can have on players lives later in life...or what their spouses need to contend with in the aftermath. NFL center Jim Otto comes to mind along with the dedication he gave to the Raider org over his fifteen year NFL career. https://www.sfgate.com/sports/article/Otto-paid-big-price-for-football-glory-3262920.php "It hasn't been easy, though, not even for a man who had endured 15 years of pounding in the NFL and close to 70 surgeries on his knees, shoulders, back, nose, you name it. This summer, a surgeon pried Otto's sternum open and worked on his heart, which had been damaged by all the infections that claimed his right leg." -
Love that it appears we have a strategy...
Nihilarian replied to Hebert19's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Levy, Brandon, Nix, and Whaley all had plans...the best laid plans of mice and men. If this regime trades back in the first round and drafts a QB. Then finds out the QB isn't so good. Yet, later on, uses two first-round picks plus a fourth on a WR who gained all his yards in college in a play this team doesn't utilize that often to help make that QB better. Well, the end result should take place much faster I'd think. What a cluster#### of mismanagement over the years, and years! Just a very brief synopsis. Donte Whitner instead of Haloti Ngata. RB Marshawn Lynch was a good pick. But then the FO refused to properly upgrade the line so the guy was always carrying three defenders on him to make yards. Oh, wait! They did bring in some useless high priced free agents that pissed off the teams pro bowler at LT. So, they need to trade away that pro bowl LT and draft a pass rushing one-year wonder at DE who was the biggest bust of the draft when they could have taken an actual useful DE in Brian Orakpo. Still needing an LT they take a "waterbug" RB who has great difficulty in distinguishing his elbow from his backside. From the new GM stating that "We're not that far away," that whole 2010 draft was bust worthy. The team finished the season 4-12 with the starting QB outright cut after two starts. Again, still needing a quality LT, and a franchise QB the team drafts a stud DT. With so many needs the team stays put and drafts that tackle. The Bills haven't had a decent pass rusher since 2009 after DE Aaron Schobel retired. Since the scouts and GM are so inept that they cannot find a viable pass rusher in the draft the last few years. So they decide to spend 100 million on a free agent pass rushing DE and that really didn't help the team win more games. But, it did help put butts in the seats. * I just wanted to add that it took a washed up, has been of a defensive-minded head coach who destroyed a top-five defense to finally find/bring in a QB who could take the team to the playoffs for the first time since 1999. This bum of a head coach was also smart enough to recognize how a quality offensive guard could improve the team in so many ways. So he personally vouched for this troubled player no other team wanted. This all-pro OG was the first since Ruben Brown and helped raise the play of both players next to him. He also attempted to bring in another quality OG but failed. The importance of superior players on the offensive line was not lost on those Buffalo Bills playoff teams of the late 80's- early 90's or the AFL championship teams of the 1960s. The ineptitude of the management of this team since the late owner fired GM John Butler in December of 2000 has been astounding...but yeah, they all had plans. What point the OP was attempting to convey is this new regime really seems to know what they are doing so far and that is so very comforting compared to previous regimes. . -
Video of Kelly being drafted by bills
Nihilarian replied to Bills4life1924's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Buffalo was a very bad team back then with back to back 2-14 seasons in 84-85 and Kay Stephenson was the HC. With no USFL. First off I highly doubt Kelly plays for Buffalo and he holds out for a trade like Elway did. Second, I kinda doubt Kelly as a rookie wins many games for them by himself even if he did commit to play. Don't forget that first season for Kelly in 86 they went 4-12. It was after the 85 season that Bill Polian came in and things started to turn around. Anyway, HoFer DE Chris Doleman went 4th overall to Minnesota. That 85 draft had 5 HoFers in it and that first round was loaded with talent -
What are your bold predictions for the NFL draft?
Nihilarian replied to billspro's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Four QB's are selected in the top six picks and seven QB's will be taken in the first round with the seventh being Kyle Lauletta by the Patriots. Darnold Allen Rosen Mayfield Rudolph Jackson Lauletta Four will become NFL starters and only one will go on to have a long, great career. -
Video of Kelly being drafted by bills
Nihilarian replied to Bills4life1924's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A few things to add here. Kelly had severe shoulder separation in his senior season at the U and he needed pins inserted to keep it together. His doctors told him he might not ever have a full throwing motion again and this is a big reason as to why he dropped to #14 otherwise he fights Elway for that #1 spot IMHO. Just think if not for that injury Kansas City might have drafted Kelly instead of Blackledge. On another note, it was rumored that Dan Marino was a party animal at Pitt and he smoked weed. This rumor caused him to fall big time. Otherwise, he doesn't drop to #27 and the Patriots or NY Jets could have drafted Marino. Bills fans need to understand what it was like with Bills owner Ralph Wilson back in the late 1970s, early 1980s with a #1 overall pick in the 1979 NFL draft the Buffalo Bills picked LBer Tom Cousineau and instead he chose to go to Canada rather than play for Buffalo. The thing is, Buffalo had a complete moron for a GM in Stew Barber at that time and he set up a dinner in Buffalo with Cousineau and his agent and then never showed up. This was the start of bad negotiations and the financial difference came down to 100k. Needless to say that Clouseau was so put off by Barber and his antics he went to play for the Montreal Alouettes. Jim Kelly saw all this and knew about the Buffalo Bills owners cantankerous, frugal nature and he didn't want to play in obscurity all his career in Buffalo. Which BTW was entering a mass exodus as the city was losing jobs due to the steel mills closing. Speaking of this the city had this color and stench in the air from the Mills. Don't forget this about the same time the love canal hits the national media. Buffalo was the very last place so many NFL players wanted to play for back then. Bills fans should be so very grateful to Bill Polian who talked Wilson into making Kelly the highest paid QB in the league otherwise he might have held out for a trade. Back then, Raiders owner Al Davis sent Kelly to England with some Raiderettes in hopes of getting Kelly to ask for a trade. Let's not forget that the Buffalo Bills had traded "the fireman" QB Daryl Lamonica to the Raiders back in 1967 and he won some games for the Raiders. -
LaConjecture Says Six QBs in the 1st Round
Nihilarian replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I agree with at least six and perhaps more. Allen, Darnold, Mayfield, Rosen, Jackson, Rudolph. Cleveland, NY Giants, NY Jets, Buffalo, Denver, Arizona all need looking to draft a QB. Then you have teams like the Patriots, Chargers, Seahawks, Ravens, Jaguars, Dolphins who already have a franchise QB and are looking to the future. I think at least four of this years QBs become starters and perhaps one or two future HoFers. Then you have Mike White, Luke Faulk who could also move up into the first round for some of these teams. -
Yes, the arm is amazing. But there is more to Allen than just his arm. Watch him in the senior bowl with much better talent on both sides of the ball then he is used to playing with. The kid shrugs off would be sackers like Big Ben and if given time to throw can put a camel thru a needle. It was at Wyoming when his line broke down usually before 2 1/2 seconds those bad things happened and Allen was forced to make the play work on his own...and that he did. Think about it, as Wyoming went 8-5 last year and won their bowl game. What happened at UCLA last year with a supposed better QB and a better supporting cast as they went 5-6 and lost their bowl game. UCLA had a receiver with 1264 yards, 9 TDs. The biggest thing Bills fans need to understand is Allen has already committed to becoming a more accurate QB since finishing college. Unlike some real bums, Jamarcus Russell, Ryan Leaf. The only way this kid busts is if the team that drafts him gets impatient and starts him right away on a bad team and the NY Jets look like that type of team, Cleveland also looks that bad. I hope the Bills move up to #2 to get him if the Browns don't select him #1 overall.
-
Thanks for posting. Listening to Allen talk with Mike Mayock on the NFL network after his combine workout Allen knew his footwork was a mess last year and is working to improve it. Considering he only played two years of college ball my take is there is a good chance he can continue to improve. "And over the next couple of years you're going to see a guy who's going to be deadly accurate. I think he's going to be a superstar." I'm buying into the above statement by Carson Palmer's brother. and http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/03/jordan_palmer_on_browns_candid.html I only hope the Browns, Jets don't draft him as they will likely ruin him.
-
I agree with this! What Bill Connelly at SB Nation and the OP don't realize is that Allen only played two full years of College ball and we are dealing with young men who are growing, developing into full grown adults. Allen started college as a scrawny 198 lb kid and grew into his 237lb frame. Plus, he has already started working with coaches on his footwork and mechanics. This showed in the senior bowl, combine and pro day as his accuracy, touch on the ball has improved. There is no exact science to determine if a player will become the next Ryan Leaf or the next Aaron Rodgers...regardless of stats. Each college QB will develop differently depending on the team they go to and how that team develops them. I can tell you right now that Josh Allen carried his team to an 8-5 record and won a bowl game as he was about the only player who returned for the 2017 season at Wyoming. The article in comparing Josh Allen to Tim Tebow is downright moronic as Tebow always had serious issues with his mechanics and it never did get better. Allen played in a deep passing pro-style offense at Wyoming which is more difficult for a QB than say a WCO scheme in which Josh Rosen played in. Allen doesn't have injury issues like Rosen or a loopy delivery like Darnold. The only other QB I like for Buffalo in this years draft class is Baker Mayfield. Want to compare him to an NFL player? Try Cam Newton, Matthew Stafford, Aaron Rodgers. "When he’s on his game, Allen will deliver the ball into minuscule throwing windows, 50+ yards downfield. Allen has a good foundation for his mechanics, having played in a system that taught him how to take 3- 5- and 7-step drops from under center. He has a compact overhand throwing motion. Allen’s offense used plenty of bootlegs and moving pockets, so he’s comfortable rolling out to pass (arguably, his strongest suit is when he rolls out to the right and throws downfield). On a micro level, Allen has the tools to fit a camel through the eye of a needle. When his feet are lined up, and he’s not pressured, Allen will deliver incredible throws to the perfect point." From another article SB Nation, https://www.buffalorumblings.com/2018/4/5/17201220/josh-allen-scouting-report-2018-nfl-draft-film-analysis-quarterback How Josh Allen develops as an NFL QB will be determined by which team drafts him and if that team allows him to properly develop.
-
Rosen's tape is miles better. But then so was the team he played on with better players, better coaching. His star receiver Lasley had over 1264 yards receiving with 9 TDs. Rosen also played in a pro-style WCO offense with shorter passes...and yet UCLA finished the 2017 season at 5-6. I can't help but think that Rosen is another Sam Bradford who looks and plays brilliantly and yet only managed to play in half of his career games because of injuries. While he can move around in the pocket and set his feet very quickly. He also isn't very good at escaping a pass rush and when he does get hit he tends to get injured.
-
What you have when you over scrutinize a college players tape when said player only has played two years of football all you get is "part" of the analysis. The kid started college as this scrawny 198 lb weakling who grew into his bigger frame. The same can be said about developing as you go and more times than not players improve their play the more they play. You can watch two years of tape forever and it won't tell you the entire story. Josh Allen's first year of college he played with a somewhat veteran team and in his second year, everyone that had touched the ball in his first year was gone. Allen had to deal with an entire rookie class that was learning as they went. Hence the reason he was running for his life nearly every offensive play and when he did throw his receivers had difficulty getting separation and catching the ball. Most QB's when under this kind of duress usually don't win many games and yet this young man managed to carry his team when needed. In the senior bowl, Allen faced some top competition and he did well going 9 of 13 for 158 yards, 2 TDs with a 12.8 avg. He also showed accuracy and touch with his throws in the game. From what has happened since the senior bowl, combine, and pro day is a significant improvement in his footwork, accuracy, and touch. There is a REAL reason as to why so many scouts, draft analysts have this kid as a top-five pick and some the first overall pick. P.S. Where are you getting this poor mental processing stuff? Allen can read the full field and is capable of getting through his progressions at a reasonable pace. He doesn’t anticipate players coming open, but will deliver the ball when he sees a player moving into space. This kid needs some time to on the bench to develop no question and like I said if developed properly he could be another Big Ben, Aaron Rodgers.
