I don't agree with the bolded at all. The Bills had this last year with Tyrod and Dennison and McD got rid of both.

Brandon Beane deserves to be fired tomorrow
Nihilarian replied to Coach Tuesday's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't agree with firing the HC and GM. However someone does need to be held accountable for this craptastic offense that can't score in a season in which scoring record are being broken. Plus that #1 in the league rush offense the Bills had just 2 short years ago went down the proverbial toilet. Even last year they could at least run the ball. The Bills OC and line coach should be the ones to go. -
Would Manziel be a better qb with this team?

Bills fans love to make excuses. They made them for Jauron and his choices for OCs. they made them for Gailey, they made them for Rex Ryan's defense. For the love of god a blind person could see that Rex was using those stars on the defensive line all wrong and all I did was argue with fans about it...all the way up until they fired him. If this HC/GM don't make a move to correct the offense after this game or by the bye week, then they themselves deserve to be fired. To me 2-6 isn't as bad as the point differential 87-200. What will it be like at the end of the year 174-400? The defense isn't that bad and the offense can't stay on the field so it makes them look bad. This OC can't find a way to make anything work. But then again he was never any good in any of his past offenses either!
-
While someone deserves to be held accountable for this teams current record of 2-6. I think the bigger problem is that the point differential is 87 points for to 200 points against! That's a huge disparity in a league that is currently setting records for scoring. This offense can't score a TD! However, like someone else stated that the FO managed to pull off a Rex Ryan type thing of killing the very best run game in the league. This offensive coaching staff killed that great Bills run game that even last year was #4 in attempts, #6 in rushing yards. This year the 2018 Buffalo Bills are #15 in rush attempts, #23 in rushing yards, #15th in rushing attempts, #26 in rushing TDs, #29 in yards per attempt! In 2016 the Bills were #2 in rushing attempts. #1 in rushing yards, #1 in rushing TDs, #1 rushing in yards per attempt. In 2015 the Bills were #2 in rushing attempts, #1 rushing yards, #1 in rushing TDs, #1 in rushing yards per attempt. I agree that someone NEEDS to be fired over this and it should be both the Bills OC and the line coach/run game coordinator!

Tell that to Patrick Mahomes... Tell that to Aaron Rodgers... Tell that to Phillip Rivers... Tell that to Carson Palmer... Josh Allen was a known project QB who NEEDED to sit for a season. You don't start a rookie QB with this crapfest of a supporting cast around him. This is good news if they will let him sit and learn by watching Anderson. Hopefully he gets a new offensive coaching staff, new line, new WRs.
-
I like Daboll too! Under a train...off a cliff...on a different team...should have not hired him and let the Patriots promote him to their OC...Tom Brady would be held for murder!

McCoy is not the problem when the run game isn't working because they were keying on Shady to stop the run. Opposing teams are focused on stopping the run and forcing the Bills to pass the ball. Currently Buffalo in 13th in rush attempts and 21st in rush yards. If you look at the Buffalo QBs this season you have a very inexperienced second year guy, a rookie and a guy 3 weeks off the street. Yet, this OC calls for a lot of down field throws instead of setting up an offense to help bolster the run game like a short, quick passing scheme. The best way to help a rookie QB, or an inexperienced QB, or a guy just off the street is with a really good run game. Something the Buffalo Bills had just last year.
-
The Bills fielded a QB with three weeks of play time in the NFL this game and he actually did good considering that fact. 22 of 39 for 290 yards, 1 INT, 3 sacks, 2 fumbles. With LeSean McCoy as the leading receiver with 6 receptions for 82 yards. (Zay also had 6 rec) However, rushing McCoy went 12 carries for 13 yards! Now, Ya think the Patriots were keying on stopping the run against Shady? Those stats tell me he is getting hit in the backfield as soon as he touches the ball. At least Anderson is targeting McCoy more often with check downs when he sees nobody open deep. This is the bigger problem with this team in my view as this offensive coaching staff stinks big time. Brian Daboll is still calling for more downfield throws from a QB that has been on the roster, in the NFL for three weeks! Same thing he did for Josh Allen! #10. I whole heartedly agree with as this man isn't setting up an offense for a rookie QB or for someone that has limited prep/practice time. Putting the ball in the hands of the QB and forcing him to carry the offense by himself is downright ridiculous, for a rookie QB, for limited experienced QB in Peterman, for a guy just off the street. The Buffalo Bills defense would be so much better with a better run game that could gain yards, control the clock, move the chains, score and keep the defense off the field and fresh. This team used to have such a dominate run game the last few years and even last season they were #4 in rush attempts, #6 in rushing yards. This year? This year the 2018 Buffalo Bills are #13 in rushing attempts, #21 in rushing yards! I agree, I've seen enough of Brian Daboll as the OC and fire the run game coordinator/line coach in Juan Castillo too!

While I did like what Greg Roman did in 2015 with the Bills having the #1 team in the league in rushing, rushing TDs and YPC average. He did stumble the next year in that first game against the Ravens with 24 rushes for 64 yards, Taylor stunk too. Then in the next game 19 rushes for 86 yards and the run game was bad again. Although, Taylor was 19 of 30 for 294 yards and 3 TDs. Rex Ryan scapegoated Roman for their 0-2 start, I suppose because the run game wasn't helping his craptastic defense enough. RB coach Anthony Lynn, after taking over for Roman did resurrect the run game and again the 2016 Buffalo Bills finishing the season with the #1 team in the NFL in rushing yards, rushing TDs and yards per attempt. Both OCs never did get the passing offense working with Tyrod Taylor though. As far as the 2018 offensive line is concerned, it is underperforming compared to what it was with Woods, Incognito with them. Still, they are not as bad as they looked those first six games with QBs Peterman, Allen starting. Mostly because neither guy knows how to set protections and run an offense like Daboll was calling. Derek Anderson speaking after the game stated that the line held up pretty good and only had one setback in protections that they corrected on the sidelines after that series. Anderson was only sacked 2x in that Indy game and the passing offense started to look better then it had previously under the two inexperience QBs. Especially considering the guy only had two weeks to prepare to start coming off the street. Football outsiders lists the Bills as 22nd in run blocking and 29th in pass blocking and I would think that the latter will get much better the longer Anderson plays as he knows how to read a defense and set protections. Thus, he will take less sacks and make the more downfield throws that Daboll wants. I also think the receiving corps will also look better with Anderson at QB as he gets more in sync with those guys. KB looked better then he has with 4 receptions for 71 yards. Also, I noticed that Anderson targeted the RBs more often then others as he looked for an outlet when the deeper throws weren't there. I'm not expecting that much right now because Anderson has had such a short amount of time to acclimate himself to this offense. I suspect the more he plays the better the passing offense will get. Why do new coaches overhaul rosters?
Nihilarian replied to major's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Exactly! It's all about finding players that fit the scheme you want to run AND that will buy into the vision the HC has for what he wants to do. Pretty sure that Gruden will have extensive talks with whoever he drafts, picks up in free agency. If a HC goes to an already established roster sometimes all the players don't buy into his scheme and those players need to be replaced. -
It's way to early to pass any kind of Judgement on this regime as they were mislead by the offensive coaching staff. (My belief) The thing is, these men interact with each other and get opinions on what is needed to have a successful season and while McD did lean a bit heavy on the second first round pick and third round pick for the defense. They did go after a QB at #7 which cost them plenty. However, I believe that somebody must have told them that Nathaniel Peterman would be a viable starter this season. That the team would be okay with the current offensive line players, receivers. What we fans need to do is suck it up and acknowledge that this year is a wash because of a rookie QB, because of bad offensive coaching (line coach, OC) (My belief) What we also need to do is wait to see how the 2019 free agency works out and the 2019 draft. This offensive coaching staff might be able to turn things around at some point this year and retain their jobs. Although, I highly doubt it. Someone needs to be held accountable for the 32nd pass offense regardless of a rookie QB. Who The F said Peterman was a viable starter while Allen sits? The Bills are around the 20th in rushing with an elite RB that has been hardly utilized even when not injured? Serious questions that need serious answers.

Daboll has something better, the NE Patriots playbook and he has been running with it to a degree calling for the downfield passes like Brady throws. The biggest difference is that Josh McDaniel's calls for more outlet passes to move the chains with RB James White who is seeing a lot of passes. White leads the team in receptions with 45 right now and second is Gronk with 26. What does that tell you about what Daboll isn't doing? Chan Gailey got the HCing job in Buffalo because he told Ralph Wilson he could win without big money stars on offense. (from Peter King SI) So, Gailey who ran a pistol type offense as OC in KC went to a 5 WR spread set in Buffalo. This scheme worked for a while because of Fitz who knew protections and barked them out to set the line and Stevie Johnson who didn't run precise routes but what he did do was he was able to find a way to get separation and get open against even the very best DBs. Gailey ran what was dubbed a "smoke and mirror" offense because he would put 5 WRs on the field and spread the offense out sideline to sideline and yet Stevie Johnson was the guy who saw the most targets. Fitz would throw a very quick, fast out to Steve that was almost unstoppable. After a while most teams realized that if they bumped Stevie on the line and took him out of the equation that pass offense didn't work so well. Gaileys spread offense was a delight to watch because Fitz would gun sling his way to almost 4000 yards. The run game worked out of that shotgun spread formation because the defense was so spread out that the RBs usually only had to beat one guy and it was a race after that. Both Spiller and Fred Jackson had over 5.0 YPC average in 2011. Fun to watch on offense but the best the team ever did under Gailey was 6-10 and the best the offense under Gailey was 14th, Yards, Points. Interesting stat, 27 in rush attempts, 13th in yards. 2011 stats. Stevie Johnson, 134 targets, 76 catches for 1004 yards, 7 TDs. 56.7 catch%. David Nelson, 97 targets, 61 catches for 658 yards, 5 TDs, 62.9 catch% Fred Jackson, 50 targets, 39 catches for 442 yards, 0 TDs, 78.0 catch % CJ Spiller, 54 targets, 39 catches for 269 yards, 2 TDs, 72.2 catch% Scott Chandler, 46 targets, 38 catches for 389, 6 TDs, 82.6 catch%

Gailey had some time as OC with the NY Jets with Fitz as his QB and they went 10-6 in 2015 in HC Todd Bowles first year. Fitz threw for almost 4k yards with 31 TDs, 15 INTs. What happened the next year is what happens with Fitz and Gailey as teams figure out how to beat Gailey's smoke and mirror offense. And Fitz is well, Fitz as he tends to get hot and cold. 2016 saw him throw for 2700 yards with 12 TDs, 17 INTs and go 3-8. The Jets crashed to 5-11.

Lies, damned lies and statistics. Look at the pass vs the run 201 pass attempts vs 190 rush attempts. Go back and re-watch the games. (1) Ravens 22 rushes vs 33 passes. (2) Chargers 22 rushes vs 33 passes.(4) Packers 16 rushes vs 33 passes.(5) Houston 27 rushes vs 29 passes. (6) Indy 22 rushes vs 31 passes. Now, the only game in which the OC called for more run plays was against (3) Minnesota which was 38 rushes vs 22 passes. This is what Daboll should have been doing each and every week and not just when the team got the lead. Pounding the ball will not only help that rookie QB do his job it also helps the defense. Look at what happened against Indy when they ran the ball on Buffalo. It basically negated that Buffalo Bills 3rd best sacking team in the League. Another thing is McCoy only has 13 receptions so far and he was the Bills leading receiver last year with 59 receptions. Daboll has been calling for more downfield passes.
-
I agree. Yes, the talent is somewhat lacking with the offense as the only real elite player is RB LeSean McCoy. Now, stating that, why hasn't he been used more effectively this season? The team got behind in points the first few games and the rushing attack went right out the window. Still, this doesn't explain why McCoy wasn't used in the passing scheme more often as he is probably the best receiver on the team too. Daboll has been mostly attempting to run a pass first offense with a rookie QB who has great difficulty reading defenses. Simply moronic! Sorry, but Brian Daboll stinks! Great coaches get the best out of their players...you know, kinda like McD has done with the defense. He should have simplified the offense to mostly run plays and screens, short outs, misdirection plays. For most of the season Daboll has been calling plays like he has an experienced veteran QB behind center. The offense is out of control with penalties and stupid drive killing penalties at that. How is it that a pro player doesn't know where to line up? I can see an incidental penalty like an occasional hold or false start. But some of these are ridiculous and make it impossible for any QB to do his job much less a rookie QB. 54 penalties for 428 is downright ludicrous.
-
I can see what McD is attempting to do by hiring Brian Daboll who would have taken over for Pats OC Josh McDaniel's had he gone to Indy. The thing is the Buffalo Bills don't have a top flight QB and it could take a few years to develop one. In the meantime defenses do win championships and having a power run game helps that defense immensely by keeping them on the bench and fresh. It's my take that Daboll was the wrong hire and he doesn't have the knowledge to properly develop a rookie QB as raw as Josh Allen. All that said the only real reason I can see to fire McD is that he needs to fix the penalties! The freaking drive killing, lining up wrong, false start, holding etc. Texans game was lost because of a lack of discipline! 12 penalties for 104 yards. Colts, 7 for 59 yards. Ravens, 10 for 100 yards. Some games it's not so bad and others it's just out of control.

The 5 year (realistic) plan for this team
Nihilarian replied to ShipUPride's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If this team can't stop all the idiotic penalties 7 for 59 this game and 12 for 104 last week., These are drive killing moronic player mental lapses like lining up in the wrong spot, holding, offsides. etc. This is a total lack of discipline and on the coaches. If McD can't fix this penalty problem then he needs to be fired and replaced with someone who will discipline the players and instill some discipline into them. You don't see the Patriots players doing this stuff and if they do they don't stay on that team for very long. -
In case that Bills fans don't remember those two players are AJ Green, Julio Jones. Anyway, one blue chip player isn't going to turn this franchise around unless it's a QB who can do it all on his own regardless of how bad his offensive line is and the only guy I can think of that can do that is Russell Wilson. Even he needed a run game to take pressure off of him to make that offense work. Before yesterdays game Colts QB Andrew Luck begged the HC Frank Reich to please "run the ball", they did just that and the results were more than obvious. That Colts run game took the heat off of Luck and forced the Bills defenders to focus on stopping the run which opened up the Colts passing game and Luck skewered the Bills defense. 4 TDs passing for Andrew Luck Going back to that bolded sentence the Bills could have traded back from that #3 spot and still gotten two or more of the great players from that first round. Then you need to think about that second sentence because this offensive coaching staff can't be relied on to evaluate anyone.
-
Exactly! It blows my mind that all Bills fans can think of are defensive players like they are the magic that will turn this team around. It won't! How soon Bills fans forget that as little as 2014 the Bills had the #4 defense overall, were #1 in sacks, were #3 in passing yards allowed, #1 in passing TDs allowed. That year the team went 9-7 and didn't make the playoffs. 100 million for a DE, DT didn't make that much impact despite being one of the top teams in sacks. This franchise needs to be able to actually compete with the New England Patriots and that team has been a top 5 offensive team since 2005, and their defense has been up and down from a top 5 to a top 15. They have been built their offense around their QB and they protect him like he is the crown jewels. If they lose a WR, RB they find another who is equally as good if not better. This FO had better be upgrading the offensive line first and foremost and then the RBs, the WRs, the TEs. Building a power run offense that no team can stop should be the highest priority. By the same token the line should protect the QB like Brady is protected in NE. Next years draft should all be about the offense. I can't see McD retaining this same offensive coaching staff either. Hire a top OC and allow him to hire his assistants.

You mean that they will be passed out by then?

I feel badly for the guy as he thought all he was going to do was mentor Allen. Not need to start a game with only two weeks to prepare. He might pull a Vonte... -

That drive at last gave the defense some rest even if it was only 3 pts
