Quiet Indictment of Lee/Roman - Trent Dilfer
Blokestradamus replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I respect his thought process in trying to take a different approach with that stuff, don't get me wrong. I just don't think he'd have the balls to put his reputation on the line and coach grown men out of their habits. Doing it with 17 year olds, there's a multitude of reasons why they don't pan out. With guys in the NFL on merit, a different ball game. -

It's all speculation. I've heard plenty from the Bay Area that was pretty scathing about Roman as well as about Kaepernick. The biggest indictment of Kaepernick is that he was the same player after Roman left. There still exists the issues that someone (Harbaugh/Roman/whoever) didn't adjust to the situation and pretty much kept the player in the situation that made him fail. I'm not trying to suggest that Tyrod isn't coachable. His improvement over the past 5 years says that he is. I have no issue with his work ethic either. It's just that this particular thing might not be fixable for him. It's no damning indictment on his intelligence, some people just can't learn certain things. It's existed in some manifestation under 4 different NFL OC's now so maybe coaching isn't the issue. That's the point I'm trying to make and I take great exception to the likes of Trent Dilfer calling out coaches when he's never been seemingly willing to do the job himself. -

Taylor is a 5th year player. He's not the same QB he was at Virginia Tech so he's developed. He didn't get magically better all by himself, he's been coached up to become who he is. It's become a cute little thing to call him "basically a rookie" but he's really not. This is a long term work-in-progress. 2015 was the fruition of the prior 4 years in Baltimore. Bad habits like his feet and eyes not being in sync is something that either natural (so he's not taken the coaching) or they are learned (he's been taught them). It didn't magically appear in Buffalo if you watch him play for the Ravens. That's why it's a shot at Cameron/Kubiak. They are the guys that actually developed him and either taught him bad habits or didn't coach him out of them. Roman's passing game isn't my favourite thing in the world but you can only work with what you have. At some point, you have to wonder if the player is deficient (in which case, stop giving him plays that show the weakness). It's the coaching flaw that got SF with Kaepernick, putting too much on his plate and then ploughing through with blissful ignorance when it didn't work. I hope it's not going to be a case of history repeating itself. -

Don't forget that Dilfer has his own agenda with all this stuff. He fancies himself as a QB guru and he's a former QB so he's going to hate anything that doesn't make the QB a centrepiece. If he still has bad habits as a 5th year player, maybe it's the player at fault. Maybe the player hasn't taken to the coaching he's received. He's not just having a go at Roman here, he's also taking shots at Cam Cameron and Gary Kubiak, even if he doesn't realise it. -
When Justis talks pass rushers, I tend to listen. On this occasion, I'm not so sure I agree with him. It doesn't sound like he's really accounting for technical/physical growth at all. The recurring theme I've seen with people I follow responding to this is a guy like JJ Watt. Watt was a really good prospect that got kinda lost in the sea of ridiculous talent in that draft but it was his work ethic that made him become what he is today. I think the Mario comparison is pretty good (the 2012-14 version). Even when he's not racking up sacks himself, he's capable of drawing attention and helping to facilitate for teammates. After all, it's a team game. I think me and Justis have a philosophical difference on edge players. I prefer guys that are more balanced (Bosa/Lawson/Fowler) over the speed guys like Vic Beasley. I respect the Force Players work he does but I'm content with a 8-10 sack kind of guy that puts in a shift against the run. If the NFL sees Bosa like he does, I'll take him at 19!

Johnny Manziel (update: waived by Browns)

I saw someone post this on Twitter last night. A history of the Manziel family written a couple years ago. http://m.mysanantonio.com/sports/college_sports/aggies/article/Manziel-family-was-larger-than-life-long-before-4723092.php -

Only so much they can do. It sounds like they've offered help already and he's rejected it. I'm not clued up enough on US mental health to know the more dramatic forms of intervention that might be available to the family. -

He's just lost his biggest professional advocate. He's about to find himself unemployed. Still under investigation by the police. I hope one of these things, maybe the cumulative effect of all three, can help him come to his senses soon. -

Pretty bad when an agent thinks you're a terrible person. -
Link to a really good piece on Joey Bosa - https://twitter.com/JuMosq/status/695578469195915264 Not entirely sure why I can't link direct to Bleacher Report.

I'm going to regret this at some point but I'm warming up to the idea of Cardale Jones. He's such a wildcard given the lack of experience and the fact that he doesn't fit some of the stuff Urban had him doing this year (particularly the option). There's just something fundamentally exciting about him.

Took teenage me a while to work that one out. I probably come across like a prick to some for trying to "save" guys like Johnny but it touches too close to home. -
I'm curious how the NFL views Jordan Howard from Indiana. He's the kind of guy I would love if he finds himself on the board in the later rounds. Chances are that he's taken where he'd have litte-to-no value to the Bills.

Yep. I've lived it first hand with my parents. Spent a long time trying to rationalise it, still not sure. -

Two options are left, right? 1) Payoff. 2) She lied. -
The reason that I love the draft is that I only agree on about half of them. Makes for a great debate if it's done right.

Without trying to sound like I'm saying she deserved it, she put herself in a really bad situation. I'll never understand how someone can keep going back to someone like that. -

I'm interested why she was near Manziel after the prior incident. Whole situation is confusing as hell. -

One of the things that I've wondered about has actually been that the vast majority of CFB players enter the league around the age for the onset of schizophrenia. It's thought to affect about 1.1% of the population and sportsmen aren't immune from it. There's been a few cases over the past 2-3 years where I've seen reports and that was my immediate thought. Not sure it's the case with Manziel, the issues seem to have been there for a while in some way, shape or form. -

Very true. It's looking more and more likely that it'll take something drastic to stop this ending in his demise. With Josh Gordon first and now Manziel, at what point (if at all) does the league start to investigate the vetting protocols the Browns employ? -

Do we even believe TMZ? Historically, accuracy hasn't seemed to bother them much. -

Quite frankly, if this is true, it should be permanent. It doesn't seem like he can sustain living in the bubble that is Johnny Football.
