It's the absolute appropriate strategy to have these days.  Now, let me preface this by saying this isn't a judgement on the 2nd amendment, but it is very easy to obtain and carry a firearm.  As a result, you have no idea that the person you are arguing with or fighting with is packing and, as you mentioned, has no real understanding of the consequences of trying to settle an argument with a gun.

I'd bet even money that the shooters in most criminal acts haven't followed protocol by legally obtaining their firearm and carry permit.  The vast majority of people with legally issued carry permits are law-abiding Americans who've been properly trained, and only want to be able to protect their family, themselves, and their property.

Fans have different opinions about the color commentators on NFL broadcasts.  Some like one and dislike another.  Others feel the opposite.

I like Chris Collinsworth.  I like him because he genuinely enjoys watching the games.  He gets excited about plays and about situations.  Does he embellish his excitement sometimes?  I’m sure he does, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t enjoying what he’s seeing.  And he sees the game well.  As soon as a play is done, he often talks about one player who did one particular thing; then the replay comes up and there it is, just as he said.

Sunday night Collinsworth got to call the final game of the 2023 regular season, the game between the Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins to decide which team would win the AFC Eastern Division.  He got a great game to watch, full of interesting plays, important plays, big plays, and big mistakes.  He loved it.

Late in the game, Collinsworth said something that was absolutely correct – the game felt every bit like a playoff game.  It was dramatic from the very first play until the final interception.  Every play mattered, and every fan watching knew it mattered.  Everything about the game was at an emotional level higher than Bills-Cowboys, Bills-Eagles, Bills-Chiefs in previous weeks.  It was great football entertainment, and it was the perfect game on which to end the regular season and move into the playoffs.

And, of course, it was a perfect game for the Bills, because they came from nowhere six weeks ago to the number 2 seed in AFC championship bracket.  I loved it.

One play was one of the great plays in Bills’ history:  Deonte Harty’s 96-yard punt return tied the game and gave the Bills the emotional energy to take the lead on their next possession.  And because the game felt just like a playoff game, I will remember that play together with Taron Johnson’s 101-yard interception return against the Ravens in the 2021 Divisional playoffs.

Emotionally, the plays were so similar.  The Bills were leading the Ravens and were trailing the Dolphins, it’s true, but the Ravens were about to score to tie the game, and the Bills had seemed to be going nowhere.  They certainly seemed to be going nowhere against the Dolphins.  As Johnson started out of the end zone, I thought he should have taken the knee and the touchback.  As Harty caught the punt on the four, I thought he should have taken the fair catch.   Then, in both cases, an absolute explosion!  By the time Johnson hit the 20-yardline, and Harty, too, it was a simple footrace.

Both games turned around after those 80-yard dashes.  I knew the Ravens were dead birds after Johnson’s magic, and when the Dolphins went three and out on their next possession, they were dead fish.  Two role players (Johnson hadn't yet emerged as the stud he's become), two game-changing plays, two phenomenal Bills’ wins.

Mike McDaniel is one of those offensive-geniuses we keep hearing about.  He installed some wrinkles in the Dolphin running attack that absolutely tore up the Bills’ in the first half.  Achane, particularly, was running wild, and Collinsworth appreciated every minute of it.  He understood and explained how McDaniel had taken misdirection to a new level, and how it was confusing the Bills.  Still, the Bills’ defense held the Dolphins to two touchdowns in the first half, and the Bills trailed by only 7.

Then Sean McDermott, the other coaching star in the game, took over.  Having watched only from the sideline, and with the help of his assistants, he developed and installed the antidote during half time.  McDaniel’s magic was neutralized, and the Dolphins didn’t sniff the end zone again.  The defense completely smothered the Dolphins in the second half – the run game fizzled, and the offensive line harassed Tua enough to limit the effectiveness of the Dolphin quick passing game.

Josh Allen had just enough to overcome a series of costly mistakes, including a first-half interception and a second-half sack-fumble-turnover.  Still, he was larger than life.  When he got going, running like a man possessed and making multiple pinpoint throws to receivers finding their way into seams, he was Josh Allen at his best.  He’s just so good, running and passing, that he demoralizes the other team.  His play said, “We are not going to lose,” and the Dolphins heard it.

    The playoffs began Sunday night.

    GO BILLS!!!

The Rockpile Review is written to share the passion we have for the Buffalo Bills. That passion was born in the Rockpile; its parents were every-day people of western New York who translated their dedication to a full day’s hard work and simple pleasures into love for a pro football team.

I think Collinsworth does a great job. I don’t understand the hate from some. It was like that for Dierdirf too-another guy in the booth I thought did a fair job.

  3. This is so sad. A wonderful road trip to see his Bills beat the Dolphins ends like this. Hope the investigation finds the shooter.

Part of the reason I've learned restraint is because of the number of crazies out there who think they're in an action movie and will just start discharging a firearm with no regard to consequences.

I used to be the guy who would not back down from confrontation, even if there was a fair chance of getting my azz  beat.  Fortunately, I've had a more sensible wife to calm me down, and I sure don't want her in the middle of anything.  I walk away.

  4. Although I know little about him, the name that keeps coming up on the defensive side of the ball is D line coach Eric Washington. Could he be a 'hire from within' candidate?

Maintaining continuity is a plus. At the same time they'd be putting the word out to other prospective hires that McD rewards his coaching staff when they've earned a promotion.

That’s a possibility. The other is retirement.

I seriously doubt Rivera comes to Buffalo. The only reason for my (somewhat tongue in cheek)comment was because of the unending Carolina connection that seems to find it's way to Buffalo.

How much do you want to bet that Ron Rivera winds up on the Bills defensive coaching staff, maybe as D-coordinator/asst head coach?

  7. Beating KC in Buffalo would be redemption for the other playoff losses to Mahomes and Reid, BUT realistically, the Bills' chances for going forward in the playoffs are better against the warm-weather Dolphins whom they've defeated 11 out of the last 13 times.  I voted Dolphins for that reason.

What a wild game. So I went to the NFL site to see how things got to where it all ended up and I honestly couldn’t believe the Team Stats. The Bills literally doubled up the Dolphins in almost every meaningful category (plays, yards, time of possession). Watching the game, it sure as heck didn’t feel that way and we still needed a 96 yard punt return to flip the script.

The red zone fails ended decent drives. That’s how the offensive stats were deceptive.

  9. So, after a 17 year drought, for the 6th time in 7 years, Bills are in the post season, with a chance to take a 4th straight division title.
Yeah, time to fire the head coach with the highest winning percentage in team history . 🙄

  10. Worse case scenario, Bills lose and season over. But, if there’s any silver lining it’s that without making any additional moves they have a draft pick in at least the top 18. With a couple trades maybe move into top 12 and grab a blue chip WR.  Also, slightly easier schedule in 2024, playing 2nd place teams in 2 AFC divisions and NFC.  I believe we’d get Broncos and Browns where Miami gets KC and Ravens in AFC.
Not wishing any of that on the Bills, just looking for some redemption should the worst happen.
That said, I’m usually a bit nervous about the Bills; will they find a way to beat themselves with turnovers, poor execution, dumb penalties, etc.?
Not feeling any of that today. My gut is telling me the Bills will slap the Dolphins silly, winning their 4th consecutive division title.
    Go Bills! Squish those fish!

Excluding this season, if you look at his avg sacks per year since entering the league x.8, we’re looking around 8 sacks next year.

All things considered, I’d take that.

Sack statistics can be misleading unless they're combined with QB pressures.  I wish the stat was commonly displayed as  (e.g.) sacks/pressures: 8/22.

In  my opinion, that would be a better measure of a defenders impact on passing plays. There are a lot of DEs who force QBs into scrambling, throwing INTs, and incompletions. Depending on the mobility of the QBs they face in a given season, the defender may not get a high number of sacks, even if he's contributing to plays that force punts. Sacks are an impressive stat, but only tell part of the story.

  12. My take has always been that if they need help from other games they probably aren’t good enough to win it all anyway.
If they miss out on the playoffs, the Dolphins can get the first place schedule in 2024 and the Bills will jump several picks in the draft.
Hoping they do win and show that they’re championship caliber. I believe they’re good enough. The keys will be not taking stupid drive-killing penalties and executing the way they did in the first matchup.
And….don’t let it be so close that it’s decided by the zebras. It will be a miserable off-season if we have to wait through 8 months of ‘what could have been’ if we feel they got robbed of a win because of bad calls.

My thought is this thread gets moved to PPP or gets locked real soon.

I believe you alluded to what for me is the biggest problem with these talkshow nitwits. They can’t just be comedians and schills for promoting showbiz guests’ latest projects – they feel obligated to preach to their audience their own political views.
It’s only my opinion, but I don’t find any of the current hosts particularly funny or interesting.

  14. They still have young receivers developing in Shakir and Shorter. I’m all for using first pick on WR if it’s a stud who can complement Diggs, but we have other needs too.  Use 2nd on DL that will need replenishing after the cap claims a couple linemen.

Spend the $30 a get am over the air antenna.

Not really sure how effective over the air antenna is in this north Atlanta suburb because of the topography.  I believe DIRECTV is actually offering to provide antennas. I’m curious to see if it would work.

Do you have Directv streaming, or dish or both. I am left without NBC, like you, on DTV Streaming. I have not checked the dish to see if NBC is available there. Regardless, I believe it will be available on Peacock.

What NBC is accomplishing is teaching me how to live life….without missing NBC programming.

Assuming the previous responder is correct, it looks like we’ll be able to view the game on Peacock. Thanks to heads up from one of the TSW posters, we purchased the Black Friday special one year subscription for $19.99, so we should be able to view it there.
BTW- we went for first game at the Kennesaw Anchor Bar with friends Had a great time.
    How did you watch? Whitehall?

  16. Really hoping the Bills can find another receiver that could be 1A compliment to Diggs. Love Shakir, and Davis can be a threat- better than Hardy or Sherfileld.

The Ravens and Dolphins are both positioned to win their respective divisions, partly because of their investments in WRs. The Bengals upped their status when having two healthy threats.

Give Josh that added weapon and they’ll be deadly.

  17. Directv is our primary provider for TV.
They’re having one of those semi-regular contract disputes that cable and satellite carriers seem to have nowadays. Because of it, we haven’t had access via Directv to the local Atlanta NBC affiliate for several weeks. No idea how close they are to resolving the dispute.
Can one of you answer this: does Peacock carry the Sunday Night NFL telecasts?
btw- don’t need commentary on Directv. We’re long time subscribers that have an excellent 3-TV HD DVR package with Max and most cable channels for which we’re billed a whopping $60/month.  They’ve been very good about negotiating low fees with us.

  18. Marv is the sort of person who sets an example for goodwill, integrity,,and class. I can’t imagine anyone who’s known or dealt with him ever having a bad word to say about the man. For all the crap we’ve experienced with Buffalo sports, we’ll always have Marv to be proud of-assuming he never murders an ex wife.

That was Michelangelo Buonarroti several centuries before Rembrandt.

Uhh, yeah, no kidding. It also wasn’t called the ‘sistern’ chapel.  It’s humor.
Obviously, Rembrandt was busy with Whistlers Miother.  Or that guy from Depew, Jackson Polack.

Reid is 9-6 with an elite QB.  Inexcusable.

Yeah, I'm being sarcastic.  And, yes, the situation with McD isn't exactly equivalent.  Reid's earned patience with his trophies.  McD doesn't have that cred yet.  Still, they're both 9-6 this season despite having great QBs.

The Head Coach is important and should be held accountable for the performance of his team.  But I like to remember that he's just one piece of a large organization that includes a lot of immature 20-something-year-old kids.  I wouldn't judge Rembrandt on one of his brushstrokes.  Likewise, I don't judge a coach on one season or one game, let alone 13 seconds of a game.

Vince Lombardi, Belichick, Walsh... all the great coaches suffered through disappointing seasons whether it was because of injuries, bad luck, poor player chemistry, a weak roster, or whatever.   Having a good QB doesn't automatically mean a team should appear in the SB.  If only it were that simple.

If Rembrandt takes a knee before finishing the sistern chapel or forgot the wiener on the statue of David they would fire his arse!  😜
