Kaiir Elam was drafted into a weird situation.

The biggest reason Cornerback was a need in the 2022 draft was because of Tre White's injury and unknown timeline for a return, along with the idea that we could upgrade on Dane Jackson... who was a solid, but unspectacular player.  Even though it was probably our biggest need that year, CB never really was a huge hole.

The Bills traditionally prefer scheme-fits at Cornerback (Levi Wallace, Jackson), as opposed to project guys with elite physical traits.  Elam was always going to take a little more time than other 1st Round guys to get up to speed.  Especially getting drafted into a zone style system he wasn't used to playing.  And especially on a Super Bowl contender who didn't have the luxury of letting him learn through mistakes on the field.

Making things more complicated, Beane then hit on Christian Benford in the 6th Round.  Less of an overall athlete, but certainly a better scheme fit for the Bills defense and more ready to play.  He won the job Week 1 2022, and has really looked the part ever since.  Benford really is a good CB.  By the time Elam really started getting playing time his rookie season, White was back in the lineup and trying to regain his Pro Bowl form.

Bottom line, I don't think the Bills have the patience to let a CB learn on the job.  And that's what Elam really needs to grow.  Rather than risk allowing big plays, they would rather just go with the safe/solid guys they can trust like Jackson and Benford.  Now that Rasul Douglas is on the team, I really can't see him going anywhere on this roster.

The Bills don’t seem to have an issue with ‘learning on the job’ provided they’re capable of getting the job done. Ironically, the 2 you cited, Jackson and Benford, are perfect examples of prepared to play, getting to start, and learning on the job.

Not trying to be that guy, but the Elam pick still baffles me. Hard to believe he can’t even get on the field. Theres gotta be something more to the story.

The Elam pick was the Bills between a rock and a hard place. They went against the usual ‘best player available’ practice and reached for a need. White was out with ACL, Wallace gone in FA…they were desperate for an affordable CB to start the 2022 season. Why he’s not on the field and is getting beat out by 7th rounders and journeymen is unknown.
I don’t have anything but my overall impression of him, but I suspect he’s not that sharp and doesn’t grasp the defensive concepts necessary to not be a liability.  He’s got physical tools. What else could it be?

Ribeye just has great flavor. I almost never do it - but it's good to freeze it a little so you can cut it as thin as possible.  But yeah, thin is best.

    True.
Back in my teen years working at a local pizza/sub joint, we’d get the whole ribeye frozen from the vendor and put it in the carriage of the Hobart commercial slicer, slice it thin, stack it up proportionately between deli paper, and have it ready to cook and chop on the flat top grill.  Sprinkled with a bit of garlic salt, pepper, onions&bell pepper, chopped, topped with cheese to melt over, and tucked into those great rolls.
I’d put those local Buffalo steak subs on toasted Costanzo sub rolls against anything  Philly could offer.
    Great-just made myself hungry!

  4. I could be wrong, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a generational divide.

Us seniors who’ve endured the ups and downs of the Bills through the years are still enjoying our team, realizing that there’s more to life than winning a Super Bowl, even as much as we want to experience the joy.
With today’s technology and immediate access to nearly everything, I wonder if the pre-Medicare era fans are so spoiled with instant gratification that they’re impatient and quickly hostile when they don’t get what they believe is their birth right.
31 NFL teams finish the season short of their preseason goal. Every year, the odds are low of winning it all.
I look forward to every season, and I’m optimistic that the Bills have the QB to make it happen before his time is done.
If not, I’ve enjoyed the ride.

82 percent of people want the coach who ended a 17 year drought, and has been to the playoffs 5/6 years gone.

which is why I effectively said in the poll thread that 82% of active posters who responded to the poll are clueless. They're all butt hurt because in their minds McDermott dashed their high hopes and ruined their year (even though the final outcome has yet to be determined).

  6. The responses in the poll are a great indicator of the mentality of active posters in this forum.

Firing a coach isn't a solution. Finding a better one is. Got that name handy?

So rather than the knee-jerk 'fire McDermott' cries, who would you gamble on to be the coach to start all over with? Do we hope McDermott gets canned and the next great coach is there, just waiting to come to Buffalo? Let's start over and hope that before Josh turns 35 we can get to the promised land.

Sure, let's, go back to the revolving door of mediocrity when the optimism of the annual draft was our favorite time of the year.

McDermott has the best winning percentage in team history. 5 out of 6 seasons with a winning record - 4 consecutive double digit win seasons. He's had to adjust to devastating injuries to key players, the departure of a top OC, dubious draft choices (Elam). The team is .500. It's not at 2-8! They're within striking distance of the division lead with 7 games remaining.

We didn't make it to the super bowl. Waaahhhhh! Neither did 25 other teams since McDermott came on board. Should all those coaches be fired?

Sure, fire McDermott. Maybe they won't have to if he gets tired of the chronic complainers and decides of his own volition that he's had enough of the whiney mafia fan base.

Be careful what you wish for.

The most interesting part was when he was asked how he would defend Josh Allen as a DC. He said that if Josh is not running anymore, you can defend him like you would any other QB.

“If you don’t have to worry about running and making splash plays with his legs then you’re just going to play coverage like teams have been doing,"

Agree. Also thought that was the most interesting statement, confirming what many of us have been saying. The threat of Josh running is one of his greatest assets. Obviously, some genius in the coaching ranks has practically eliminated that facet of Josh’s game, making it easier for defenses to cover the WRs in the Bills’ unimaginative offensive schemes.

$18000.00/seat is the rumored PSL, for lower bowl 50 yd. Line seats.

    Not in this lifetime.

There will still be plenty of customers with $18000 for PSLs. Isn’t it a one time fee that can be financed?
People are paying $50k for new trucks. $18k will be affordable to a lot of fans.
For some, that will be their entertainment or vacation money. Their one big luxury. In a household with an annual income of at least $100k, spending maybe $7500/year for their beloved Bills will be part of their annual entertainment and won’t cripple them financially. The blue collar worker making $45000 probably will be priced out of the season ticket market and have to settle for the occasional single game tickets. That’s the world of pro sports today.

I still say the Bills should pursue the exonerated Matt Araiza. Just because he was a horn-dog at 21 doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to get an NFL job now.  I have news for everyone, all the pro athletes are horn dogs!

If you’re a healthy, fit athlete in your early 20s, plenty of $$, nice wheels, …lots of very attractive women will be available for your pleasure. You’re either a horn dog or just not into chicks. Not too many other choices.

  10. I  recently stumbled upon some comments from Bills fans dating back to 2017. I forget what site it was (a Facebook fan page?) I don't know how I got there, but it was amusing to read the comments. The comments were posted immediately after acquiring Kelvin Benjamin. There was great excitement and anticipation, believing he would bolster the receiving corps and the Bills would have one of the best group of receivers with him and Charles Clay on the field together.

In hindsight, it pretty laughable. But, it's typical of the fan reaction when we pick up some 'has-been' who another team has determined won't contribute much.

Sherfield and Harty are not 'has-beens', more like 'never-weres'. They're typical JAGs. Not bad, not great. Just guys who'll never hear the words pro bowl or hall of fame mentioned in the same sentence as their names.

I can't honestly say those two are an upgrade from Brown and Beasely 2019.  Maybe not even as potent as Brown/Beasely 2022.  We're going backwards. The Bills desperately need a legitimate threat to go along with Digg, Shakir, and Kinkaid.

Buffalo has always had a lot of talent in the area but couldn't always maintain it.. lots of talent flunked out or kicked out etc

McDuffie has done a tremendous job with the young men of buffalo giving them a stable figure and guidance

Bringing the first inner city school in Buffalo to win a state championship and they want another

He is keeping young men in school, making them get HS diplomas and has had many kids played college football including D1

    Good luck in the playoffs

My parents went to Bennett in the 50s. My father got kicked out. I never thought to ask him why.

  12. Yes, but unlikely, especially when the head to head and conference record gives tiebreakers to pretty much any other 10-7.
The Bills best chance to make the playoffs is as division winner. That would mean knocking off some pretty tough teams and hoping Miami goes into a slump and loses to the Bills in Miami.
Right now, unless the Bills ‘figure it out’, they will miss the playoffs. With half their opening day starting defense out and dubious play execution on offense, enjoy the remaining games, but realize there’s probably only 8 more.
Maybe they can get closer to picks between 15 and 20 in the draft to get an impact receiver.

  13. And the Bills get a night game, on the road, the day that the clocks get set back an hour, so by the start of the 4th quarter it’ll feel like it’s going on midnight. There might be some heavy eyelids on the visitor’s side tonight. Hell, I’ll need an afternoon nap to stay awake.

It doesn’t help that I had to get up at 2am to change all my clocks and watches.

I'm 100% convinced people here only watch the bills

Mostly true. Always watch the Bills and occasionally catch other games, but I can’t sit on a sofa all weekend watching movies and sports. Not into fantasy football or gambling. So no, I don’t have much knowledge of second tier players on other teams. For me, there’s more to life than spending hours as a passive observer.

    Tom Landry got fired.

That was a long time ago so I don't recall all of the details, but the situation was vastly different.

The Cowboys were under new ownership, and the new owner (Jerry Jones) had no sentimental ties to the existing regime. And he just happened to be a close acquaintance of a guy (Jimmy Johnson) who he wanted as his coach even before making the deal.

In the case of Belichick, the owner and coach have hoisted the Lombardi trophy together and celebrated the dynasty of the early 2000s as part of the same organization. If Kraft sees it as time to rebuild under a new front office and coaching staff, he's almost certainly going to be diplomatic and cognizant of optics and encourage Belichick to gracefully retire.  The only way I see Belichick getting fired is if he was just plain stubborn and refused Kraft's 'offer' or he were caught up in some controversy that necessitated his dismissal.

I suspect Belichick will realize his best days are behind him and voluntarily walk off into the sunset on his own terms within a year or two.
