I think it can be instructive too, but I also think it is very scheme based. We took and connected on more deep shots last year thus we had a higher YPA. Another team might have a scheme to do "long handoffs" a lot. That would lower YPA but if that QB hits those 3 main points; TOs, RZ%, 3rd%; are more relevant to winning.

He's not leaving a lot of points from what I see (maybe if you consider stalled drives). The team RD% is not bad (9th in TDs). I do think the 3rd down % could be higher.

I've said it in other threads but ALL I want is top 5 in TO, top 10 in Red Zone TD %, and top 10 3rd down %. I don't care what you do in completion %, YPA, Yards, QBR. If you hit those metrics you are going to win a lot of games. It might be ugly but it will be a lot (I know some of those are team stats).

I want someone who doesn't lose games. Don't turn it over, score TDs in the red zone, stay on the field on 3rd down. As the hoodie said 90% of the games in the NFL are lost not won. I would rather have someone beat us from time to time then to throw away games because of turnovers. Its not exciting but its efficient.

As bandit has said. We needed one; we didnt just want one. Why we needed one is a different story and outrage is understandable. But not taking EJ means starting the year with Tuel or Jackson.

I agree with him. All those things are debateable. The one I want back from TT is the pass to Woods. His non-throw away was so similar to the one to Woods that I'm ok with it. The other points are in a perfect world type of things. Considering our 2 min drill of late I'll take how well it did run.

You're right its not all him but he is very important. He threw 2 and pitched the other on an option this weekend. I will also be interested to see if he can win when the run game gets shut down. But it hasn't been shut down since weve switched OC's. Teams are still stacking the box, and I actually wonder what it'll take to stop the run. When it does happen I sorta expect the passing to be so easy he can't screw it up. It'll be interesting when that happens but so far hes checking most of the boxes for me.

I get that. I would classify Championship quality as low TO, high RZ%, and high 3rd%. He's checking two of three. The yards and other stats are system based in my opinion. If he can get the team to top 10 3rd% while keeping TO top 5 and RZ% top 10 we will win a LOT of games (probably at least one in the playoffs but we WILL be in the playoffs).

I can understand your take, but as I mentioned above. If he continues with an improved RD% and keeps the TO's low, I will be content with his performance. I would like to see his 3rd % a bit higher but that stat for our last 3 games is right in line with last year. We have started games the last two games out very well in on 3rd down but faltered in the second half. I can understand some of the concern because of the poor 3rd % in the 2nd half, but as I said those other two stats together are more important in my opinion. If he regresses in one of these (RD% and TO) while still struggling at 3rd%, then we can talk again. I don't think people understand how difficult game managers are to find. Alex Smith's cap hit is right where TT's would be next year (assuming I understand the contract right).

Hard to make any conclusions with that in the data. However just some general notes He/we have Improved at Turnovers, Red Zone TD %, sacks, QBR. He/we have slightly regressed at completion %, 3rd down %, Passing Yards, Yards per. Considering we have a very weak WR core, and considering that those first two stats (TO, RZ%) are more correlated with success, I am happy with TT. I am slightly concerned with the 3rd down % but I think its related to the WR at the moment (drops and not getting as open). He has definitely missed some opportunities which is slightly concerning. Yards really need not be mentioned with TT. Its opportunities missed (3rd % mostly). Lastly he is soooo cheap this year, but if he continues this trend I pick up the option. I will continue to measure Tyrod by Turnovers, RD %, 3rd %. So far he's 2 for 3.

You didn't say you didn't like his drafting which is fair. So I will concede a bit his big FA signings have not been great. But as you noted there are not a lot on defense. I think I see your point now on that. The two from this year were good gets but its ultimately not as big of a sample size on defense.

Thats is elite company IMO. It was from the offseason but I think its impressive.

But thats not true. We saw his numbers relative to his age. He has performed well for a young player. OBJ is old and now looking like hes becoming a TEAM liability. If were gonna play the guys they could've gotten game were gonna be here all day and every GM is gonna look awful. It was a risky move to get someone who was considered the best in a deep WR class. Barring injuries the kid's gonna be playing for a long time.

Lot to point out that I disagree with. Just to start on you D stat, does whaley not get credit for his good defensive draft picks (Darby and Brown?) and his FA signings look good (Hughes, Brown, Alexander). We havent even seen this years players so we will need wait but I assume at least one will be pretty good. As has been stated before, that list of FA signings looks like an average FA class for a GM. It could be a great one if TT pans out. Arguably TT has already shown great investment and at this point he is developing and is now in the coach's hands. All the Byrd stuff is speculation to me. I think the team's record with Whaley says what he is, an average but trending up GM (I'm starting from his first full offseason).

Our numbers in these categories from 2014 was insane. I think top 3 IIRC for both (might've been higher)

The idea of it from a no huddle/hurry up is interesting. Particularly if you get a favorable defensive set out there like a nickel against 12 personnel.

Retort is who did we lose? Hogan/Felton/Gragg/Karlos? Either way its 10 of 11 starters returning. All the starters have another year in the system; thus should be better.

He did say startling. But I also don't understand how depth will matter that much in Game 1 of the season. I guess that poster extrapolated to the whole season.
