Wallace isnt under contract for next year so I am ok with taking CB2 a little later but I think we need something besides Dane Jackson in the pipeline. Probably best way to state my position is we NEED something for next year and we it would be NICE to upgrade this year (but dont have to). Agree on Phillips; I'm not sure if Star will be gone (dead cap is big but still 4 mil cap savings). I still think we can get a really good player later in the draft. I assume the 1 Tech youre targeting in round 2 is Tyler Shelvin? I would rather move up a bit in round 3 and take him if we had to.

Uggh on a RB in the first and giving up a 4th this year is not possible if we dont move back to get one first. I dont think we need to take 1 tech in the 2nd. I see a lot of them falling to our pick in round 5 (Marvin Wilson, Taderrel Slaton, Bobby Brown III). Your proposal does not address concerns at the following more important positions: CB2 next year (only Tre and Dane Jackson under contract for next year). WR next year (Diggs, Will davis continue to grow?, 1 year older Beasley is all we have) iOL next year (Feliciano is ok, Ford is hope, Morse has injury concerns, Boettger is okish) S this year (Johnson behind Poyer and Hyde inspires no confidence for me) Are you concerned about the relative positional value of RB and 1 tech for where you take them (in the first 2 rounds)? Are you not concerned about these other positions cause I dont think you fill them if you burn the draft capital?

I dont think a trade up is ruled out at 30 (I do think a RB is), and I understand why you do it. However, I would like to articulate the case for trading back a little. Bruce Nolan has made this point most passionately (and every point honestly). With Josh getting a huge contract in the coming years (as well as contracts for Tre, Dawkins, Milano) we are going to have let a lot of our depth/low end starter talent walk (think Taron Johnson, Harrison Phillips, Siran Neal). Since you pay a premium during free agency, the desire would be to get this level player in the draft. More of those picks allows you to hit more and fill more holes long term.

I have heard tape is super hard to find this year which makes some sense. Re: my UNC comments I have heard he thinks that some of his best tape so there could be that. This year will probably have a few more surprises in the draft. However, I think we will see a LOT more late round draft picks be contributors because they werent able to be properly evaluated. So NFL def has All22 for sale. Its how Erik Turner does his breakdowns (he has gotten in trouble for publishing though). College sounds like a black market. Awesome. When they have to start paying players theyll probably figure this out as a revenue generator.

Agree dont just put him with another guy cause same measurables. But while I havent seen much tape; he looked good in the UNC game and ok at senior bowl drills. Where do yall find tape? I am stuck with Youtube cut ups. Sorta surprised with as much business as the draft drives that NCAAF doesnt sell All-22 tape access.

Dean and Okudah are both pretty early in their careers but have been starters at times. I'm not sure you should mark them as misses. I also think Byron Jones has been a lot more than meh (hes made a pro bowl, has a 55% career completion % allowed). So that would be 2 great, 1 good, 1 bad, and 2 incompletes. I would say 3/4 being good and 50% being great is a really good hit rate.

@GunnerBill I see some of your concerns now. I would not ever trust him in a deep zone and I would be a bit worried with him covering a TE through a seam. Hopefully those could be coached a bit. However, him cover hook/curl and flats looked really good. I also think he showed really good run fits when lined up at the LOS. I def see your concerns though cause he gave up some really big plays.

I still need to get to Hamsah's tape but his reps at senior bowl looked good. He did well in press and had the physicality i would want in big nickel (deployed against 2 TE sets). Overall FSU seems to not be coaching talent well lately so he may have more room to grow more than most. Ill get back to you after i watch some of the available youtube tape.

IMO its a small sample size and thats why it changed so suddenly. In those ten games there were many drives where most of hte work was done in the 3rd quarter and then they punched it in at the start of the 4th. We are returning more snaps than like anyone else. Check out Joe Marinos pod today. I think he said 38 reasons why we could get better and 7 we might regress. I think well be ok.

DE is sorely in need of bodies. Hughes, Addison, Epenesa, ... Johnson (ugghhh). I was thinking there would be two additions there at the start of FA (now probably just one through the draft). I think on the O-line Beane pulls the ole draft someone and trade someone else (not necessarily the worst player). Safety and Big Nickel are both in need of capable bodies as well. Thats 4 pretty quick which gets us to our 5th round if we dont trade down. That 5th player is likely not on the team for their stated position and are going to be a teams player only. So I guess I sorta agree with your point cause I think Beane will bring a surplus of O Line players to camp again and then move one for picks near the end of camp.

Start with the chiefs. CEH, thorn hill, and hard man all seem to be pretty near their peak. Compare that to a top 10 player like Ed Or a first round pick like Tremaine. Better counter is to say they are gonna bust but I think we have a good bit (more than most teams) of untapped potential on our team.

It’s not gonna take much to sign draft picks because the rule of 51. The numbers for the contracts are known as well. I assume beane didn’t make that gaffe.

I would also mention a point joe Marino has made. There are several young players that are primed to take a step up and if they do that will material difference to the team because of their position. They include Josh (still has room to hit his ceiling), Ed, Tremaine, Knox, Epenesa. If two of these take a step forward then we will have a much better team.

He also did some jet sweep work. Could replace McKenzie? Also as mentioned he has returned kicks and punts. Could get some versatility out of him other teams could unlock because he’s lower on our depth chart.

Thanks for the link. It was sorta the elite skills I was speaking too. His last season is interesting. About 1/3 of his receding yards and almost 1/5 of the total you gave came in two games against meh competition. He’s okish as a receiver. But i laugh at him getting the same money we’re paying diggs. I think it’s a big overpay.

Was he that good in college? I remember watching miles jack film and he covered him like the whole game and jack ended up with more yards cause he was doubling as an RB for the bruins.

Was talking to @Doc about this. Salary is guaranteed. But team could try to recoup the bonuses. This is tough though cause if star is concerned about the team trying to recoup the bonuses he could just show up and try to get cut (so the team can’t get the bonuses back).

No we dont need that much. The sum of their salaries might make it look like that but in practice its much less. In the offseason your top 51 contracts count against the cap. So when you sign a draft pick you are displacing one of those top 51 and the cap hit is the difference between their contracts. With first round picks this is a actually a material amount of money (like $1 mil or so) but for the later picks its not nearly as much. I think we need 2-3 mIl for draft picks (that might even be high)

No news the discussion was tangential. Someone mentioned hoping they cut Star (really bad idea) and I responded say I just hope he doesnt retire which lead us to this rabbit hole. No news here.

Agree on Lee Smith. I see you can "try" and get the money back. Sounds like the process goes to arbitration. I know (lost the link) you dont get the cap relief until the money is returned. So since its a process and FA is right around the corner I think its best if Star doesnt retire else were gonna be trying to fill a hole and we wont get the money until later. The big assumption in there is that the FO would try to get it back. Appreciate the clarification that we do have some ability to get money back but Star retiring would be pretty awful still.

That might be it either way i still hope he doesnt retire (I'm gonna keep trying to find more info). Trying to get that bonus back sounds like its a bit painful.
