  3. Another thing to remember is that Cole Beasly is long in the tooth and was pretty broken down by the end of last year. Less wear and tear means better legs in the playoffs.   6. True. One of my points is that the following is probably new. The "new" situation is that there are several good running/good passing QB's playing on the top teas lately. The "new" wrinkle, that I see, is that we are using waves of speedier defensive ends on our D-lines in order to be able to run these guys down (or chase them to give them less time). We play these guys as DE and in the interior and have them bull rush a bit in order to contain the pocket and push in the pocket. This would quickly wear out the DE's but we have a 3 deep set of them.

  10. Would the young man still be as effective in the 4th quarter if he had played 100% of the snaps? Another part of what we are doing is that lighter DE's are lighter but can put forth a maximum of physical effort for a few plays at a time, even in the interior, AND be replaced by a fresh DE to continue the wearing down of the OL. The Bills are using this to have faster defensive linemen available to attack and contain the running QB's.
  11. We all understand that Buffalo drafted Epenesa, Rousseau, Basham and brought in Obama to back up Addison and Hughes. That is 6 DE's who would or could start on many NFL teams. They also kept Zimmer, who is sub-300 pounds and has speed. There was a graphic during the TV broadcast that showed that everybody got at least 20 snaps out of ~ 60 snaps.. It looks like Buffalo is doing two "new" things to attack the recent trend of mobile QB. [1] kicking DE's inside to DT on passing downs, in order to penetrate (rather than gap fill), and to get guys with more speed to run down the QB AND [2] heavily rotating these guys so there is always a fresh player, with good legs to attack & contain the QB. [3] we can send in a fresh guy at DE 3 times in a row and have each one of them bull-rush. It gotta wear out the OL by having them spend a lot of energy and strength on every play- see what happens in the 4th quarter. This allows the DE to push the OL-man directly back into the QB. It allows the DE to see if and where the QB escapes to get away from pressure AND to slip the block to chase the QB.   13. Just gotta have anybody other than a blue-collar type team in the lead. We are not the cool-kids.
  14. Beasley has been a go-to guy for much of the season so far. The Chiefs had to be planning on taking that consistent 4-8 yard catch away from us. Few plays from him meant that they were defending someone who wasn't there for most of the night. Good idea.

Notice that only one was drafted by the Bills. Canny professionals get that way by playing for at least 3-5 years. Speed is not that important today because you seldom see single coverage. Getting separation and knowing how to improvise with the QB is more important. Getting separation in college doesn't automatically translate well to the pros because most of the college DB, never make it to the NFL. For WR's, it is better to take players who have proven they can make it in the pros.
  16. I think we go corner back in the first round I think we go interior offensive line or linebacker in the second round. Running backs are always around and can be done by committee.

  18. I think they were resting him and avoiding injury as well. Remember that it is a 17 game season, and he is young and has less staminia. He did not play last year, and rookies often wear out if they play a lot in their first year. It is also possible that it was a chance to get regular season tape on other DE's who might be traded for mid round draft picks.

  22. We have a lot of people posting here who seem to have limited allowed reasoning. .... I have a lot of tools in my workshop. A few of them are a screwdriver, a hammer and a wrench. Sometimes I need to hammer something down and the hammer works best. Most of the time something else works better. The hammer donesn't work well if I have to tighten a bolt. On some plays, having Star play one of the interior DT is the best thing. Then we win most of those battles. On other plays, having two mobile DT's is the best thing. Sometimes, having Star playing, when it might seem that two mobile DT's would be better, but we put in Star. It confuses the offense and allows us to play games because of that or because they try to exploit that, but we are one jump ahead of them. There are games within games. He allows us to play all of them and the other team makes more mistakes.

  24. Folks, time for a little physics lesson here. The laws of gravity are real but most people, and that includes physics students, do not really comprehend them. Skipping the equations and the simple differential equations, a summary is this. The distance that an object drops depends upon the square of the time that it is in the gravitation field. That is time (sec) X time(sec). .... There is a "free fall calculator" ( https://www.omnicalculator.com/physics/free-fall ) that can do these calculations for you. ... (These are for a small object without wind resistance to forward motion, or the football "sailing" and floating down slower than a little piece of lead). Anyway lets compare how far the object sinks (arcs) if it travels the same forward distance in different times- that is it is thrown faster or slower. 1.5 second to get there ====== drops 36' 1.0 seconds ==============drops 16' 0.75 seconds=============drops 9' The drop is from the highest spot the ball rose to compared to where it was caught. The ball always is thrown upwards to start. Allen throws a fast ball, it doesn't spend much time in the air and doesn't get real high and doesn't have much drop. A good thing is that in windy conditions, a side wind or wind from behind or against, does not have much time to change where the ball is going. That is a good thing. Especially in Buffalo. The fastball is not in the air very long, which does not give much time for the defensive back to react to the ball and knock it down. That is a good thing. If a linebacker is between the QB and WR, they can knock down/catch the pass IF they are not in the right spot. If they are NOT in the right spot, then hey have little time to recover and get in the way. So the QB can sling it fast and "thread" it between DB's OR float it over the LB heads with arc but give the DB more time to break on the ball. On the long balls, a weak arm QB, will throw a rainbow that can drop down over the DB and this is good if the DB is beat by speed and running directly away from the QB. Another way to work is for the WR to be running across the field and then a slow arcing ball is a bad thing because the DB can recover. A fast pass can go to the WR easier. Notice how many passes Allen throws that way. I disagree that Allen will never be a good long ball passer. He has enough "touch" to throw the sideline fade and can throw the rainbow to the WR running directly away from him to a burner WR. For many QB that is their only long ball. He does not do that many of those plays but rather uses deep breaks to achieve the same thing.
