Bluto Addresses the Bills Draft Strategy
maryland-bills-fan replied to Mickey's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
People who are desperate do crazy things. Let's hope one of the top 4-5 drop to where we can reasonably trade up. And that we can find a trade partner. And some other team doesn't jump us. -
I think you keep trying to get a good QB. Draft one every year or so in a lower round. Wait for an opportunity to get a good one high in the draft. This year, I think we tried to do that but got screwed by being just slightly better than 4-10 other teams and ,,,, made the playoffs. Sometimes plans don't work out, but don't flog a dead horse and try to push something thu that may not make sense any more. If there is somebody there real good at 6,7,8 have a swing at it.

What do you think happens when a team sends away or lets leave 10 or more of their starters and then trades all the draft picks for a QB.... who then is a bust? This is a real possibility for the Bills. I don't think it is worth the risk for the success of the team or of keeping the franchise in Buffalo. You don't bet your company on a whim or emotion. A bad QB decision could lead to some surprises.... Media market ranking (varies by source) Buffalo 53 San Antonio 32 San Diego 29 Sacramento 20 Portland 24 Columbus 31 Oakland/SF 8 Salt Lake 30 plus a bunch of others. There is more going on then testosterone driven excitement.

WOW is our OL ever in shambles
maryland-bills-fan replied to Bakin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
...I don't think so. He gets physicals all the time and probably at the end of the year. He is a bit of a head case. If the Bills wanted to have him, the handled him wrong and now get nothing. -

He is a bit erratic. He reworks his contract to stay here and play with they guys he knows. Gee, he sees his center and his OT go. A lot of other older players (even Darby for a 3rd) get shipped off for any draft pick (Darby was pretty good. Cost a 1st, and was sent out for a 3rd !!). Gee, I've been a fool. They just wanted to lower my cost and I'm off to a new city at my age. Screw it!!! I think that is what happened. -
Yes, he was experienced. My point is that he had immediate success because the groundwork was already in place. If you try to start a rookie QB with a poor and disfunctional team- especially the WR and offensive line, how the hell is he going to learn anything and develop? He learns that it is better to make one read and run with the ball because the linemen wiff on blocks and the wide receivers can't run a 5 yard break to get daylight to catch a pass. You ruin the guy if he has to learn to play in the NFL that way.

I think that here is one of the options that would give us the #1 pick in the draft and could get this team what everyone would agree should be an elite QB. We start the same way as a loud minority of people at 2billsdrive want. Trade up to #2 and get the best bust good-looking QB: 2019 3 win team. No o-line, no LB, no WR, but QB looks good on the sideline 2020 3 win team. Two replacements trickle in with the draft starting in round 2. Retirement of K.Williams. New QB is learning 2021 4 win team They draft DT, WR and two o-linemen. QB recovers from concussion but has happy feet from hearing footsteps Shady retires. 2022 2 win team good looking QB is traded to Pats, team moves up to #1 pick and tries again for a QB. 2023 5 win team we now have 1st and 2nd rounders at o-line and a respected defense. Newer QB holding clipboard 2024 14 win team We are in the playoffs baby !!! the bad thing is the team is now know as the San Diego VAQUEROES There !!! I finally agree with some of those people who post here.

Buffalo needs, not wants in the draft

See! I always thought he was a sensitive guy. -
I am in favor of trying for one of the top 3 with a trade up to #5 to #8. Or seeing what is available at #12. Or rebuilding and taking a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. As to what is around in 2019, lets wait a while and see what happens after the 2019 college season. By the way, have you ever seen Walter football ever say anything good about the Bills? Here is an article you might not like about how well the pundits are at picking QB's. http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/23039883/history-tells-us-nfl-terrible-evaluating-quarterbacks-means-2018-draft-prospects#Part1

I agree that we could and should upgrade the present o-line, lb and wr with FA's if we don't draft those positions. Of course that is what we would do. But these guys are sitting around without jobs for reasons. You don't dominate other teams by using their cast-offs. Let's hope that some 3rd string guard, starting for us, doesn't wiff on a block and get our QB killed.

There was a good article in Buffalo Rumblings (that I can't find now). It looked pretty well thought out and without an agenda. If I remember, he said it was 80% on the #1 pick and 50% on the first round. The second and third were about 30% ?. Because of the way the draft value chart really shoots up in the top 5, the best way would be (if you havent tanked) to draft a QB in the second or third round for 3 years. About 5X more "cost effective". You can only try out/test out one extra QB a year, so there is no way to draft 3-5 in one year. That seems to be what smart teams do- the Pat's just got one with Garo' and traded him away before he hit FA. A good plan when you already have a QB is to draft one in the 2nd or 3rd every other year.
-
Then you didn't gain that much. What you can do is "invest" one of our second round picks to get an extra 1st round pick for next year and have the ammo to move up for a QB next year. Example: (for no good reason) use Arizona who picks at #15 this year. Let's work out what happens if they improve by 5 spots or regress by 5 spots next year. We trade our 2018 #53, worth 340 points for their 2019 pick at either #10 or #20. <<they fall to #20>>>>> #20 is worth 850 points, we gain 510 points. We either use the #20, or gain the equivalent of an extra 7th pick in the second round compared to our original #53. (that means, we we could trade these points for picks we wind up with the #53 AND the #39 picks) <they rise to #10>>>>> #10 is worth 1300 points, we gain 960 points. We either use the #10 or gain the equivalent of the 17th pick in the first round compared to our original #53. ( (that means, we we could trade these points for picks we wind up with the #53 AND the #17 picks) In either case, we have some ammo to use if we want to move up, or we gain the equivalent of another higher pick in the 2019 draft. It is a way to invest our extra draft picks from this year in a QB for next year. (or the year after) That is the sort of stuff the Bellicheck does every year and uses it to add an extra player or two every year. They are always a top pick to get into the SuperBowl, so don't discount how this helps them.
