How accurate were the 2017 NFL mock drafts?
maryland-bills-fan replied to PIZ's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Mine was pretty good, but that was because all the teams called me up before sending up their pick to see if I approved. -
Here is an old post comparing a couple of good Bills lines with what we have at the moment. Criteria are just the # of pro bowls and also the draft pick value spent on the line. The present line is pretty poor compared to the past good lines. I think TT hid some of the faults of the line, because he was a threat to scramble for big gains and that retarded the pass rush, lead to containment strategies and he often had a spy watching him. I don't think you can win for long with a rushing QB. How does the Bills o-line stack up against those of previous glory years? I think there were 3 previous periods when the Bills were good. The first was I the old AFL days but that is hard to evaluate since there were two leagues that for many years (until Broadway Joe) not evenly matched. The other two were the “Electric company” years and the K-gun years. There are a range (and I mean a range) of opinions as to how the Bills should proceed in this year's draft and the run from “Trade this and next year's draft for sure-thing QB X” (etc), through, trade up a little maybe, to “work on a foundation and draft QB in the 2nd or 3rd round. You might wonder how much in the way of higher draft picks those good Bills teams spent on their offensive line. Different eras, different styles of play were involved but where the players were drafted and how dominate they were compared to their peers gives an indication. Here is some rough information. ================================================= The Electric Company. Position............player........,,,,,,,....draft pick............pro bowls. OT....................Foley,...................1st (#26)..............1 OG..................McKenzie.............2nd (#27)...............1 C......................Montler.................2nd (#32).............0 OG.................DeLamielleure.........1st (#26)..............6 OT...................Green......................5th (107)............0 TE....................Seymour................1st (#7)...............0 A few comments. The pro bowl is a bit of a popularity contest and some great players were shut out by some of the all time greats. Seymour was drafted as an offensive tackle but played TE and as a 6th O-lineman helped block for OJ. …. Okay, a summary 5of 6 drafted in the first two rounds cost was 3360 total “draft points” 8 pro bowl spots ============================================== 1992 Bills Position............player........,,,,,,,....draft pick............pro bowls. OT...............Wolford …...............1st (#20)..................3 OG..............Richert.......................1st (#16)..................2 C..................Hull........................... ..??.........................3 OG..............Parker........................3rd (#69)..................0 OT …...........Ballard.....................11th (283).................2 TE...............McKeller....................9th (227)..................0 A few comments: Hull came over from the Generals where he signed before the 1983 NFL draft. McKeller only played one year of college football and was a basketball player who was a good receiver in the “K” gun offence. 2 of 6 (more like 3 if Hull included) drafted in the first two rounds cost was 2065 points not including Hull 10 pro bowl spots. ================================================== == 1995 Bills Position............player........,,,,,,,....draft pick............pro bowls. OT.............Fina..........................1st (#27).....................0 OG............Brown......................1st (14th).....................8 pro bowls ! C..................Hull........................... ..??.........................3 OG..............Ostroski.................10th (271)....................0 OT …..........Parker.....................3rd (60)........................0 TE................Johnson.................2nd (61)......................0 3 of 6 ( 4 if Hull included) drafted in the first 2 rounds cost was 2372 not counting Hull 11 pro bowls spots 2018 Bills (as of 4/9/18) Position............player........,,,,,,,....draft pick............pro bowls. OT............Dawkins.......................2nd (#63)...................0 OG............Incognito....................3rd (#81)....................4 C …...........Gray.............................UFA.. ........................0 …..............Boline.........................4th (#111)..................0 OG............Ducasse......................2nd (#61)...................0 OT............Mills............................5th (#163)..................0 TE............Clan............................6th (#174)..................0 2 of 6 in the 1st 2 rounds 412 cost 4 pro bowl spots ========================================= 2018 Bills (as of 4/10/18) If Incognito actually has retired Position............player........,,,,,,,....draft pick............pro bowls. OT............Dawkins.......................2nd (#63)...................0 OG …...........Gray.............................UFA.. ........................0 C...............Boline.........................4th (#111)..................0 OG............Ducasse......................2nd (#61)...................0 OT............Mills............................5th (#163)..................0 TE............Clan............................6th (#174)..................0 2 of 6 in the 1st 2 rounds 227 cost 0 pro bowl spots So if you want to give Ken Hull a rating of middle the 2nd round (420 points)?? these would come out as Electric Company..........3360 1992 Bills.....................2465 1995 Bills.....................2792 2018 Bills......................412 or 227 Okay, you can find o-line gems in the lower rounds. BUT, I really think we have to pay serious attention to the o-line before we are back in the big time

If we can't trade up to the top 5 because they are keeping their picks and 4 of th 5 are taking one of the QB that we want, well the plan to trade up, even if it means trading the entire draft doesn't work,,,, as well as the hopes of a more modest move up ( to 6-10) to snag one of the top four......We do need to draft a QB this year (and every year until we think we have a real good one). But #12 is too high to use on Jackson or Rudolph. I suggest that we then try to do two things. {number one} trade down from #12 a few slots and take from the next tier, which is Jackson or Rudolph. Either of these has almost the same ? (40% versus 70%? type numbers) of being a franchise guy. Different people believe that different ones of these are the "90% can't miss" guy" I can't believe that they ALL are 90% franchise quarterback hits. and {number two} trade one of our 2nd round picks this year for some team's number one pick in 2019. This will give us two 1st round picks next year for another swing. Who knows what might develop in college next year? Here is what we could get with a trade-down from the #12 pick. down to gets us the pick on the left and also this overall pick ============================== #14............100th player (4th round) #16.............78th player (3rd round) #18............60th player (2nd round) #20............55th player (2nd round) #22.............48th player (2nd round) #24.............44th player (2nd round) #26.............40th player (2nd round) #28.............36th player (2nd round) #30.............32nd player (2nd round) #32.............30.5th player (1st round) We would have two firsts, two seconds, two thirds (+lower picks) this year AND two firsts next year. Two offensive linemen, a linebacker, a wide receiver and two other BPA would give our QB some good support. Who knows? In 5 years it may be looked at as the smartest move of the last decade.

Why all the hate for Josh Allen?
maryland-bills-fan replied to Buff76ers's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Because he played at the 7th best conference in the NCAA and played only two years after community college ball. Because his QB rating was terrible against top 50 teams and so-so against top 100 teams. (he did smoke Garner-Webb college). -

It is something that Mueller is investigating. Something worked out between Facebook and the NSA. -
I understand that hand size is very important to all those "draft a QB at any cost" people because of their frustrations. (snicker)

Bills Go 7-9 this Season
maryland-bills-fan replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It is pretty clear where the Bills will be. A decent QB will fall to them either at #12 or with a very modest step up in the draft. It may not be the guy from Hollywood or one who can cut down a whole corn field in an afternoon. The new QB for this year doesn't matter very much because AJ will be the QB for the year and the rookie will be holding a clip board and learning but maybe playing a few games late in the year. The Bills will have 4 picks in the first 3 rounds (2 will go for a QB) and will get 2-3 rookies who will contribute this year. The present management has shown the ability to plow over the veteran FA and waiver wire players and they will flesh out the roster with adequate to surprisingly good players. (where did our safeties comer from??) Having cut expensive players will allow them to bring in veteran players with some experience and limited tool-kits- the coaching state will use the good bits from these players to cobble together a viable team. The team will go 9-7 and squeak into the playoffs. .....................People, please remember that coaching teams for poor teams have a 2-3 year window to show results. This is the plan they are going with. -

He will be a great QB to get the Browns into a workmanlike pattern that will allow them to develop all their good draft picks into good players and a team. -

Some people's plan is that the draft will supply us with a rookie QB to hold a clipboard on the sidelines, rather than being thrown to the wolves. -
What is your #1 QB performance metric?
maryland-bills-fan replied to TheFunPolice's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
If I had to pick one it would be total yards. But the ranking of the opponents would be a factor to modify it. -
Yea but. The senior bowl has special rules that keeps the defenses from doing anything strange or that may hurt a QB. We did not see how he handled pressure or disguised defenses. All blocks below the waist are prohibited. Pass rush games are prohibited at all times. Only four rushers allowed, no 5-man pressures or blitzes from secondary permitted. Fronts a. In Base, only an Under front will be permitted in both 4-3/3-4 schemes. 1. 4-3 UNDER, traditional lineup with strong-side linebacker over TE and remaining two linebackers in "box" and off-the-line of scrimmage. 2. 3-4 UNDER, strong-side linebacker (Sam) aligns over TE, with two “box" linebackers off-the-line and weak-side linebacker reduced as the 4th rusher (not allowed to drop into pass coverage). b. Linebackers and defensive ends are not permitted to switch positions. c. In Sub, only an EVEN front with four-down defensive linemen and the Center left uncovered will be permitted. Pass Coverage a. Zone 1. Two-deep or Three-deep zone coverage only. 2. Safety rotation to curl/flat only. In Base, Under/Cover-6 will be a zone call that allows the free safety to rotate to the weak-side of the offensive formation. In Sub, Even/Cover-3 will be a zone call that allows the strong safety to rotate to the strong-side of the offensive formation. No safeties are allowed to insert or switch coverage responsibility with the linebacker assigned to his side (no “buzz” rotation allowed). 3. The deep middle safety must be aligned between the hash-marks when the ball is snapped. b. Man-to-Man 1. Man coverage with a free safety only. Press technique is permitted. Etc etc etc https://www.seniorbowl.com/playing-rules.php The senior bowl did not show how he might react to real pressure or how much instant smarts he has. (They want an entertaining game and don't want players to get hurt). They take a lot of weapons out of the hands of the defense and play into the profile of a big guy with a bit arm. I don't think it shows how he would have done in a big time program, but it is better to have looked good than bad there.
