Would you make this trade with the Raiders?
maryland-bills-fan replied to Bakin's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
No. Beane and I want to see impact players from the top of the draft. I would not move down lower than 16. (don't ask why 16). -
Maybe, but he tore his ACL prior to the combine and would not help this year. We are thin at DT and need some contribution this year. I would not take Simmons except in the 3rd round. Even today, recovery from a ACL is not 100%. Too much risk of a partial recovery in my minds. https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/may/11/acl-injuries-sports-athletes-careers

Nope. He is going for superstuds with the first two picks and high ceiling OL, TE, RB WR after that.

Shocker? Not really. Beane has said and shown last year, that he wants to get impact players from the draft. Not nice and good starter but impact players. The Bills can let the draft come to them this year and they are in the position, where moving up gets real expensive. Move up one spot and it cost 50 points but every step up from that costs 100 points. In this scenerio, Oliver, the 3 technique DT is already taken and the Bills build a linebacker corp that is awesome. No weak links, all fast and hard-hitting stars, good in pass coverage and something that will give opposing offensives fits. Let's look at what they have now. Starters: Milano Edmunds L.Alexander quite a good start. L.Alexander is sort of a DE/LB type with 13 years on the clock. Backups; M.Alexander(5)- a sort of safety/LB Deon Lacey(3) Juilus Stanford(6) corey Thompson(2) Really, have you heard of these fellows? Edmunds plays SAM , Milano plays WILL and White plays MIKE. All three are 3 down players. Edmunds and White are threats to rush the passer. Yes, we often played with 2 LB last year on 3rd down. With different players, the scheme can change. Now what about White? ( http://walterfootball.com/draft2019ILB.php) OKAY. we draft 1st round linebackers in two successive years and with Milano have the best LB group in the league. What did so scouts say about Devin White? Here is how one of the National scouts summarized White: (same Walter football piece) " OKAY, he is a difference maker and there will be no weak spots in the linebacker corp. With our good defensive backs the defense should be outstanding. Now, what about defensive tackle? I would want Oliver but if he is gone, we will be down a tier in defensive tackles and there are a lot of high ceiling 3-technique guys with decent floors available later in the draft that we don't have to reach for. For example: (comments copied from walter football) I see no reason why he couldn't move to the interior. :: We could get a short term 1 year rental of a veteran while these DT develop or just go with the Phillips and some rookie DT's. About defensive tackles, please look at who try to but a value on "disruptive value" a.k.a. (sacks + tackles for loss) per game. Oliver, Saunders, and Zack Allen look pretty good there.https://www.bloggingtheboys.com/2019/4/10/18300761/finding-the-superior-athlete-impact-defensive-tackles-in-the-2019-nfl-draft

Can the Bills wait past the 3rd Rd for a RB ?
maryland-bills-fan replied to PUNT750's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
That is true. Running backs and wide receivers do not have to think a great deal- it is mostly instinct and moves that happen immediately. A linebacker or safety has to recognize the offensives options, disguised plays formations and tendancies. -
What do the pre-draft Visits tell us?
maryland-bills-fan replied to Dkollidas's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Good study. They only have 30(?) pre-draft visits and it does take Bills resources to do them. Not really the place for an overall smokescreen. The day2 guys they interviewed likely shows something of the plans. These guys don't have a lot of combine data and probably not a lot of pro-days or film. No reason to hide the interest. -
Heh? I agree that Beane uses the draft to get impact players and trade/FA to get starting players. He did get another RB, 3 wide receivers and two tight ends for Josh. It is not that that cubbard is bare. Where did he clearly indicate that he is going for a impact player for Josh rather than the best impact player?

There are a lot of high ceiling low floor running backs available in the 4th round and later. Running backs are like WR and TE. They don't have to be all-around players, able to do all things well. If you want to specify their skill set as 5 skills, they only have to do 2 or 3 well in order to be a valuable part-time player. You can substitue them in quickly, with a lot of rest and the defense still has to respect their top 2-3 options. They are not fatigued, have fresh legs and can just practice and get near perfect with a very limited set of scripted plays. Bellycheck retreads players this way. You can use a newbie to do the same. -
Allen Sophomore Slump?
maryland-bills-fan replied to Inigo Montoya's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I don't think he will slump this year. I think many of the slumps happen with a rookie QB playing for an established team. The defenses have all year to figure out what he did good in the 2nd half of the rookie season and then they counter that and scheme against his tendencies. The Bills offense will look different this year because of the turn-over in the offensive line. -
The score is 1 point for getting a 1st rounder in the first round and 2 points for getting him with the right team. Really the winner is how well you pick the 24- 32 draft picks. But I haven't seen any other scoring system. I would like to see it approached from a "big board". Something like 3 points for hitting the draft slot, 2 points for being +/-2 slots and 1 point for being +/- 4 slots. Also do that for the first 3 rounds of the actual draft.

Matt Millen https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2810100-2019-nfl-draft-big-board-matt-millers-latest-rankings#slide1 has the following list. We pick #9 and #41. The first 3 picks in his list will not make it to #9. I have in red what my targets would be. The top two QBs are in green and might take up spots before our #9 pick. So 3 gray (gone), two green (QB gone) = 5 gone. One of the red should make it to #9. 1.Nick Bosa, EDGE, Ohio State 2. Quinnen Williams, DL, Alabama 3. Josh Allen, EDGE, Kentucky 4. Devin White, LB, LSU 5. Greedy Williams, CB, LSU 6. Ed Oliver, DL, Houston 7. Rashan Gary, DL, Michigan 8. Trayvon Mullen, CB, Clemson 9. Jeffery Simmons, DL, Mississippi State 10. Williams, OT, Alabama. 11. Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama 12. Noah Fant, TE, Iowa 13. Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia 14. Brian Burns, EDGE, FSU 15. Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State 16. Byron Murphy, CB, Washington 17. Jachai Polite, EDGE, Florida 18. Clelin Ferrell, EDGE, Clemson 19. Dre'Mont Jones, DL, Ohio State 20. Dexter Lawrence, DL, Clemson 21. Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State 22. Daniel Jones, QB, Duke 23. Yodny Cajuste, OT, West Virginia 24. Raekwon Davis, DL, Alabama 25. Chase Winovich, EDGE, Michigan 26. Derrick Brown, DL, Auburn 27. Will Grier, QB, West Virginia 28. N'Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State 29. Devin Bush, LB, Michigan 30. Oshane Ximines, EDGE, Old Dominion 31. Greg Little, OT, Ole Miss 32. D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss 33. Elgton Jenkins, OC, Mississippi State 34. Mack Wilson, LB, Alabama 35. Marquise Brown, WR, Oklahoma 36. Jerry Tillery, DL, Notre Dame 37. A.J. Brown, WR, Ole Miss 38. Jawaan Taylor, OT, Florida 39. Jaylon Ferguson, EDGE, Louisiana Tech 40. Julian Love, CB, Notre Dame 41. Christian Wilkins, DL, Clemson 42. David Edwards, OT, Wisconsin 43. Irv Smith Jr., TE, Alabama 44. Zach Allen, EDGE, Boston College 45. Kaden Smith, TE, Auburn 46. Drew Lock, QB, Missouri 47. Kelvin Harmon, WR, North Carolina State 48. David Montgomery, RB, Iowa State 49. Damien Harris, RB, Alabama 50. Gerald Willis, DL, Miami (Fla.)

Gosh you are so certain that you are perfect. "Best" player is not an absolute definition, regardless of your opinion. "Immediate Need" versus "Potential" versus "Best performance now" versus "we have drafted 6 tight ends and 3 are all-pro and the other 3 could start for 25 nlf teams" are all part of what should be the consideration.
-
Which is better, a plug-and-play, slightly good starter, or a guy who take a year or two to develop and then could be an impact player and all-pro? Think of the stock market and how to build a portfolio. Risk vs, potential gain.

We are at #9. It is very painful to move up from there. Look at the following from Johnson move to cost additional pick in trade (round-pick in round) ============================================ 8 50 4-26 7 150 3-24 6 250 3-4 5 350 2-23 4 450 2-13 Real good players, potential impact players, are available al the way to maybe 12 or 16? No need to give up a 3rd round pick (plus) unless there is really really a reason.
-
Ordinarily I would agree with you. The Bills seem to want to use their first 2 picks to get real studs who are impact players. I think that (listening to the "experts") that the top 3 DT are impact players. We need a 3 technique DT, and an impact one is there. We could also get a decent DT in the 2nd or 3rd round if there is a bigger impact player available. I say go for Oliver.

I don't follow college football very closely, so without looking it up I don't have clue as to who plays those positions for Iowa. I imagine that Iowa played with at least two wide receivers and if you send one of them out on deep patterns every play, the defense would have to have a safety on top. So 3 defensive backs are 15-30 yards downfield. If they play two tight ends, then at worst one is covered by a smaller safety and the other is covered by a usually slower linebacker. If the tight ends are both pretty good, you have some mismatches to exploit. Iowa was 8-5 and 4-5 in the Big Ten. I don't think that they are introducing a new offensive concept that everybody is going to be moving towards. The top 2 TE's caught 88 passes and the top 2 WR caught 54 passes. (looked that up). Are they the lucky benefactors of a gimmic offense? Are they Bills going to use a two TE passing package? I am still leary of drafting either one of them in the first round. We will see how the NFL views it in a week.
-
Here is another angle. I say, NEVER draft a player in the first round IF his teammate at the same position is also a "sure first round pick". If a college team has two good players at the same position, especially if they are often playing at the same time, what happens is that they dominate the opponent. Two good defensive tackles will dominate the oppoent's offensive line because they don't see double teams and there are not enough chip blocks and help-outs to keep them both under control. A DE playing with two great DT's is in a good place- the QB gets pushed out of the pocket and the OT gets no help. Two good linebackers, each look better because colleges can not get a hat on both of them. With two good wide receivers, the #1 CB on the other team can cover one of them but the other is going up against a poorer CB. Clemson's defensive line has Williams, Ferrel and Lawrence pegged for the first round. Would they look as good if they were all playing on a weaker college team and they were the only stud on the d-line? . https://www.si.com/nfl/2019/03/21/clemson-defensive-line-2019-draft-close-friends-top-prospects Somehow Iowa has two first round tight ends this year. What are the odds? Do you remember when the Bills drafted Cousinou and Nelson at LB? How did that work out? Just a caution.
