Why not a Free Agent RB2?
maryland-bills-fan replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
How has he "earned the starting job"?? Is he the league leader in rushing?....... Conference leader in rushing?.... Division leader in rushing?.... Top 8 in rushing yardage?.... Top 16 in rushing yardage?.... Top 24 in rushing yardage? Well he is about there. I guess you are satisfied with finishing about 3/4 down the standings. .... Not to be mean, but do you understand what I am saying? ... (now I expect a whole bunch of excuses) -

....and Singletary is 41 for 194 yards. Kenneth Davis often got that many yards on a single play. -

That 41 catches for 194 yards by Singletary is less than the combination of Gore (16 for 100yards) and Yeldon (15 for 124) = 31 for 224 yards. -

Diggs was included to illustrate how significant McCaffrey's receiving numbers were. Receiving yards IS part of the conversation when you are discussing running backs. There are a lot of running backs who don't earn their keep. As well as other positions. ... and your point is? You get what you pay for. Sometimes you get more and sometimes less. The market pays more for players who are expected to be better. The market does NOT pay more for poorer players. The market expects higher draft picks to perform better than lower draft picks. A rookie RB is on a four year cost-controlled contract. They are cheaper than the same quality veterans, but come with some start-up time and some possibility of being a bust. The bust rate goes way up in later rounds. . . ick Range Total Value Signing Bonus Picks 33-41 $7,650,500 to $7,125,435 $3,584,000 to $3,202,135 Picks 42-48 $6,994,472 to $6,077,737 $3,106,889 to $2,440,173 Picks 49-64 $5,932,210 to $4,578,946 $2,334,334 to $1,350,142 NFL Draft Rookie Contracts: Round 3 Pick Range Total Value Signing Bonus Picks 65-74 $4,278,420 to $4,028,376 $1,138,382 to $1,031,870 Picks 75-92 $3,975,925 to $3,624,290 $1,002,690 to $863,695 Picks 93-102* $3,458,115 to $3,399,480 $793,704 to $761,516 NFL Draft Contracts: Rounds 4 -7 Round Total Value Signing Bonus Round 4 $3,324,499 to $3,006,531* $804,499 to $486,531 Round 5 $2,868,832 to $2,753,988* $348,832 to $233,988 Round 6 $2,728,511 to $2,647,353* $208,511 to $127,353 Round 7 $2,631,885 to $2,594,288* $111,885 to $74,288 https://heavy.com/sports/2019/04/nfl-draft-pick-salaries-contracts-signing-bonuses/

It looks like you think he needs some coaching up but has a high ceiling. What round do you think he would go in? We could get a RB1A in the second or another RB1B to pair with Singletary in the 3rd round. Then this guy could be in the plan for starting 2022. Stash him on the practice squad for as long as you can or keep him as RB 3. ?

Why not a Free Agent RB2?
maryland-bills-fan replied to FireChans's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well I disagree a bit with that. I think the plan is to get the "touchdown maker" type player in the second round. The backup plan is to draft somebody to share the RB with Singletary i the 3rd round. We have a shot at Swift, Taylor, Dobbins and E-T at 54 or a move up. We should be able to draft Akers at 54. There are a lot of 3rd round decent backs if those things fail- enough of them that we could do a number of things, some of which might be surprising. Trade down from 54, move up from 83(?), maybe ever swap this year's 3rd for a 2021 second? -

Singletary was 22nd in yards gained rushing and 44th in yards gained receiving. We can not escape the fact that those numbers are low production. -

Yep. Some teams reject will do just fine (sic). We need to get somebody who other teams are scared of. -

McCaffrey Signs 4 Years 64 Million
maryland-bills-fan replied to aristocrat's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Wouldn't it be nice if the Bills drafted a player, who after a year might even be in a conversation about McCaffrey? Well, who cares, we got a cost effective guy in the 4th round. And missed the playoffs again or were a "one-and-done". -
I think our coaching staff is smart enough to figure out that short circle or spot passes to the RB would be deadly with our two speedy WR and Allen's threat of his running for a chunk. I think they didn't call them because Singletary just didn't catch the ball reliably in practice and if he did, in a game, he was not shifty enough in the open field to break a big gain, nor was he fast enough to squirt out of there for a big gain by outrunning the defensive linemen and LB's. So those plays were not called, because the didn't look like (I;m sure they tried) would work.
-
I didn't make that #31 ranking but lets be honest. You rate people on production and not on emotions. He was 22nd in yards rushing and 44th in yards receiving for a running back. Yes, he missed 4 games. You might expect that for a smaller RB who does most of their work between the tackles. Singletary had only 41 receptions and we needed another weapon there and he was not it and probably will not make great improvements there. With some luck, we can get a top 3 or top 5 RB this year and it is a good year for them. It would be stupid to go cheap and take a 3rd or 4th round player because "it is a bargain and cost effective" or some other excuse. Lets get a guy, who the "experts" feel is a certain 3 down starter, rather than a guy who is expected to be a complementary piece, or a good backup.
-
E-H or Akers are the most likely. Swift, Dobbins and Taylor will be gone too early to even thing about trading up for. E-H is "like" Singletary, except that he is so much faster that he can get around the edge, outrun LB and safeties, and be a threat to go the distance. Also, he is a very good pass natural catcher, has good hands and will be a check-down receiver for Allen AND he can spread out wide as a legit 4th WR. Akers is also fast and brings break away potential and is heavier. He catches well but we haven't seen him run with discipline because his offensive line was bad in college. So he has some down side. IF all 5 of these are gone, the second tier in the 3rd round- maybe with a trade up, will be fine. Sometimes these guys can be a real winner, but the chances are less.

Been there. Parked a good ways away and walked the last half mile. People were selling 6-packs on the street for you to carry into the game. I remember one game where the Bills were backed up near their own goal line and the QB threw a pass that was intercepted for a pick-6. The Bills offensive line tackled the guy in the end zone and then went on a rampage tackling and knocking down the other team's players fro 3-4 minutes. The officials didn't know what to do, it was just like a Bison's hockey game. Fans loved it. I also went to the first game at Rich Field and my wife and I both got a plastic silver dollar sized gold colored token as a keepsake. Damn! have lost or misplaced it years ago.

Any chance Trevon Diggs falls to the Bills?
maryland-bills-fan replied to Lurker's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
A smart GM and team might figure out what really good players would be available at our draft picks and then use free agency to fill the other needs of the team. When your draft pick comes up, you then can draft the BPA, within reason, and also fill a need for the team. You might even move up in the draft, twice a year for three years to get that player you want. The hole right now is starting RB1A /RB 1B. The backup RB did not dress for 10 games last year. -
